I haven't looked this up or anything but I think the only way you can change the button numbers is to use a different driver for the controller that numbers them differently (if one exists).

Alternatively in the game set the 10 buttons you can and convert the rest to keyboard hits with something like joytokey.

Can you? - Yes.
Do I know what it's called? - No.

When I was playing Battlefield 2, I would sometimes use my Xbox 360 controller to fly and stuff (RARELY - NOT EFFECTIVE ). There was a program I would use, where you could change the keys (For example, Joystick-Left = Mouse movement left). I would sometimes get really bored and just move my joystick around, and my mouse would go across the screen. But that's a different story for another time. - Excuse me, I'm extremely tired.

Mm.. if it was an Xbox controller, Microsoft's Sidewinder software might've helped, i remember the old joysticks came with calibration software that allowed to you to assign joystick operations to keyboard keys, then in game, you would set the options t the keyboard keys.
PS3 Controllers im not sure.

But, hang on a second, if you have 16 buttons, and only want to use 10.. why dont you just NOT assign the other 6 buttons to anything?

I found these two links, not sure if they're helpful or not:

Here and here..

Though I think I misread your question, but at least I'm somewhat helpful
