Just finished another frustrating FIFA 09 match. The player [Removed - no naming and shaming please] (who is now on my blocked list!!!) began the game with a perfect connection. I hit the upright, just before he scored a lucky opening goal. But as happens way too often, on the resumption, guess what?...the connection is extremely laggy and unplayable. He's cheating using a lag switch to frustrate players to quit out of games. I didn't quit, i played, i fought back, to a 2 all scoreline, but lost on penalties! Guess what, he can lag you so that you can't time the meter to hit the penalty and over power them...another loss, another cheater escapes!
MY IDEA/ SOLUTION: Implement some kind of Lag Threshold. By that I mean, a new way for the servers to track the match connection quality, all throughout the game to catch these kind of cheaters. Let's say the server pings each player, EA can determine a threshold like 300ms, if the connection falls below that on either side for 3 consecutive pings, the match should be abandoned due to low connectivity. Downside: If players realise they are losing, they can turn on their lag switch, or put something to download on their computer (which shares the same connection) and slow the game to get out of it. Fix: let the player whose connection has the higher ping get the loss, and award the other player the win! of course, by higher ping, it must also be the higher ping 3 consecutive times, over the threshold. Now, I'm not sure how feasible this all is, and the cost of the server running a ping every game minute or so might be too much for the game to handle. But really, something has to be done about these kind of cheat mechanisms. Anyone with bettter suggestions or improvements to mine? I hope some developers read this and get something into FIFA 10 before shipping. Last edited by ayrshirelass; 26-07-2009 at 09:23 PM. |

The servers already ping our machines, during matches, to confirm a connection.
Unfortunately EA would never implement this. The reason is because the don't want to discriminate against people that don't have good broadband service. A compromise would be, rather than having a set threshold, there is a speed discrepancy switch. I proposed a long time ago that a connection status indicator should be shown on the team select screen, so we can see how bad the connection will be (Connection Status Indicator). EA said they would be looking to do something like this. After starting the game, if one of the players connection speed drops drastically the game is aborted. If the player whose connection drops was losing at the time the game is awarded 3-0 against them. If they were winning at the time, then the game isn't recorded. That way, the person with the connection problem will get punnished if they are losing, and should make the use of lag switches pointless.

yeah, this part is the best:
"After starting the game, if one of the players connection speed drops drastically the game is aborted. If the player whose connection drops was losing at the time the game is awarded 3-0 against them. If they were winning at the time, then the game isn't recorded." |

Personally I don't know why we keep having to put up with green, orange or red bars rather than cold hard ping figures. I've just played yet another horribly laggy game that quick match set up for me. The weird thing was that the first game between us wasn't that bad, but it dipped suddenly in the rematch. I want to be able to see in advance if conditions change, and I'd far rather do that using pings than patronizing, often incorrect bars.

How about haveing dedicated servers so that way if someone trys to lag switch or anything else then the player with the lag switch lags and the other person doesnt. And if that can't be set why not have a connection filter for example if you have a good connection and have the option to play with people who have the same connection as you or better.

Should really be a filter or some sort of search option that helps you find with the best connection, rather then finding the first available opponent.
Amount of times I've been drawn against Mexicans, Americans, Spanish etc, only to find the game is laggy & is too late to quit.
