Wigan athletic F.C. was formed in 1932, just after the end of Wigan Borough the year before. Wigan Athletic had tried a total of five times to establish a football club in the town of Wigan, such teams were; Wigan County, Wigan United, Wigan town and the previously stated Wigan Borough. Athletic bought the previous home of Wigan Borough known as Springfield Park, they were then elected into the Cheshire County League.

Wigan had a notable record which was mentioned in their Honours & Records section a bit above the History. During the year of 1995 Wigan were elected to the League known as, Lancashire Combination, unfortunately in 1950 Wigan came close to election to the Football League, With Slalalalahorpe Unite beating them in the vote by a close margin. In 1961, the club moved back to their old Cheshire County League.

Then in 1968, Wigan Athletic were founder members of the Northern Premier League, although in recent years it has been known as the UniBond League. After 34 shocking failures of election attempts, including one controversial but headline-making application during 1972 to join the Scottish League Second Division, Wigan were finally elected to the Football League in 1978.

Wigan Athletic had finished in second place in the Northern Premier League in the 1977-1978 Season, whith the winners being Boston United. But luckily Boston's ground and facilites did not meet the Football League criteria for a League club, whereas Springfield Park did, Wigan Athletic were put forward for election to the League. It toolalalalail 1987 to be promoted to the Football league as there was no automatic promotion, before when, a club had to be 'voted out' of the League to allow a non-league team to be promoted in their place. At the end of the 1977-1978 season, Aouthport finished second last of the old Fourth Division, they then faced off with Wigan Athletic for their place in the league. The first round of voting saw each of the clubs recieving 26 votes and ending in a tie, but after a tense re-vote Southport controversially lost out 20-29 and lost their place in the Fourth Division. Wigan Athletic became and English League Club on the 2nd of June in 1978

During the first season of League Football, Wigan Athletic had finished in sixth place, only six points off promotion in their first league season and in front of an average crowd of 6,701. The next two seasons featured two more top-half finishes. Finally the Latics gained their first Football league promotion under the management of former Liverpool player, Larry Lloyd in 1981-1982, with 91 points seeing to their promotion to join the old Division Three, beginning a 10 year spell in the third tier of English Football. During their first season in their newly appointed Division Three, they struggled quite a bit and Lloyd was acked in early 1983 only to be replaced by Harry McNally. McNally's management seemed to be beter with a few mid-table finishes. Although the 1984-1985 season was dreadful and he was replaced by Bryan Hamilton the Tranmere manager. Hamilton proved to be the right choice as they won their first lot of silverware as a League Club winning the Freight Rover Trophy in the same season. They were then defeated by Bolton Wanderers in the Northern Final of the same competition the next season. Hamilton secured Division Three survival, which had been looking an impossible task earlier that season.

The Latics played a brilliant season in 1985-1986. Finishing in fourth, unfortunately they were 1 point off promotion and it was the last season before the play-offs were introduced for promotion and relegation. During the summer of 1986, First Division team Leicester City had attracted his attention and he left for them. His assistant, Ray Mathias, who had followed him from Tranmere, took up the managerial role. During the 1986-1987 season Ray got them into 4th place and the play-offs. But during the two-legged semi final stage they lost too Swindon who went on to win the final promotion place.

During the next five years, they had finished in mid-table, even coming close to relegation in 1988-1989 and 1989-1990 (during which Mathias was sacked and previous manager Bryan Hamilton returned). Then finally in 1992-1993 they were relegated for the first time. The following season Wigan finished 4th from Bottom to complete their worst-ever league season.

During February of 1995, local millionaire and owner of JJB sports Dave Whelan purchased the club, which was then playing in the Third Division (fourth tier), and stated his ambition to reach the Premier League, a statement that was widely ridiculed at the time. Ten years later Wigan Athletic were playing Premier League football.

At the end of Whelan's first season as chairman, the Latics finished in 14th place. Whelan's business connections in Spain helped him attract three Spaniards to the club, Roberto Matinez, Isidro Diaz, and Jesus Seba, they became known as 'The Three Amigos'.

'The Three Amigos' were joined at the club by John Deehan, lalalalalaplaced Graham Barrow as manager during the 1995-1996 season. Deehan had coached Norwich City to an unexpected 3rd place finish in the inaugural Premier League season. The following year saw the first steps towards Whelan's dream when Wigan Athletic became Divison Three champions on the last day of the season. During a mid-table season in Division Two, Deehan quit to become Steve Bruce's assistant at Sheffield United. Ray Mathias retured for his third stint as Wigan Athletic manager. During the next few seasons, Mathias took Wigan to win the AutoWindscreens Shield at wembley in April 1999. He then took Wigan to the Division Two play-offs in the same year, losing 2-1 on aggregate to neighbours Manchester City. Whelan's Premier League obsession saw Mathias being fired.

John Benson became the new manager and took the team to a commanding position at the top of Division Two in his first six months, nly to collapse in the second half of the season. The 1999-2000 season was failure when Wigan lost 3-2 at the last ever Division Two play-off final to be played at the old Wembley Stadium.

Benson moved to his new post of Director of Football in the 2000 summer. When former Arsenal manager Bruce Rioch took the Manager's job. Rioch left the club in February 2001 after many sever injuries and an unimpressive first half of season. He was replaced by stalwart Colin Greenall, before the surprise appointment of Steve Bruce for the final eight games of the season. Bruce took Wigan too a brilliant season but once again they lost in the play-offs. Steve Bruce then left for Crystal Palace even after repeatedly pledging his future to Wigan.

Paul Jewell a previous Wigan Forward took over as manager. His first season was a complete failure but the following season was a lot more successful with Wigan getting tooo the Quarter Finals of the League Cup, beating 3 Premier League opponents en route. Athletic won the Division Two championship in 2002-03 with a points total of 100. The club won 10 consecutive matches. During that season they had only lost 4 games. They were promoted to the second tier of English league Football.

After losing the opening match they then went on to go unbeaten for the next 17 matches. A weak fnish saw Wigan win only three of their last ten games to finish Seventh. A Last minute goal saw the Latics drop out of the play-offs.

During their new season they did one better and went unbeaten for the first 17 games. The latics remained in the hunt for promotion all season, they didn't win the title but they were promoted with a 3-1 victory against Reading, placing them in the top division of the English football league system after their 73-year history.

Their first match was against Chelsea when they lost to a 94th minute goal. Then after a successful run, by November Wigan were second in the league. They reached the Football League Cup after defeating Arsenal on Away goals in the Semi-Final. But in the final they were defeated 4-0 by neighbours Manchester United. They finished the season in 10th place. Their Right Back Pascal Chimbonda was included in the PFA team of the season. Wigan failed in their bid for European football and opted not to take part in the UEFA Intertoto Cup. Wigan soon sold many of their players that had been with them in their first Premier League season. But they soon bought in new and better replacements. By mid-December they had eight consecutive losses. They were 15th by early March and were moving away from the relegation Zone. But a series of defeats meant Wigan faced the serious threat for relegation. On their last Premier League match a 2-1 victory secured them to stay in the Premiership. Paul Jewell resigned as manager and assistant Chris Hutchings became his replacement.

During their third and second season they had made a lot of transfers but there is not much too name about these two uneventful seasons. Other than changing their kits around ready for the 2007-2008 season.

The next season began well topping the Premier League after three games. Emile Heskey became the first Wigan player to represent England whilst a full member of the squad. Unfortunately Heskey broke his foot immediately after his Enflan call-up. Wigan soon plummeted into the Relegation Zone and Whelan fired Hutchings after only 12 games in charge.

Former Manchester United Defender Steve Bruce had just resigned as Birmingham City manager and signed a 2million pound a year deal to try to keep Wigan in the Premier League as their new manager. Wigan even managed a draw against Liverpool, one of the supposed 'big four'.

During the summer of 2008 their kits were altered for the new season. Mainly because of their new contract with Champion (sportswear). A few new but Major transfers happened and Steve Bruce left Wigan Athletic (for the second time) on the 3rd of June 2009 after finishing 11th with 45 points (their second best finish ever in the Premier League). He left to take over the vacant Manager Position at Sunderland.

When then Appointed Roberto Martinez as manager, he had played for Wigan from 1995-2001 as 1/3rd of the 'Three Amigos'.
