Hamburger Sport-Verein e.V. ![]() Established in: 1887 Current division: Bundesliga 2008/2009 season finish: 5th place (Bundesliga) Premier division titles: 6 (1923, 1928, 1960, 1979, 1982 and 1983) Home ground: Volksparkstadion, 57 000 Club History Hamburger SV pre-Bundesliga HSV, like many other German clubs, was formed through a merge of several clubs. SC Germania, established in 1887, was merged with Hamburger FC and FC Falke in 1919. The name of this new club was Hamburg 88-Germania-Falke, and the club colours were those of the city of Hamburg, red and white. The badge, Die Raute, wore the colours of the old SC Germania badge, blue and black. In 1922 HSV should have become German champions for the first time, but a scandalous final stopped them from it. In the final, Nürnberg had two players sent off and another two injured, and in those days there were no substitutions which meant Nürnberg had too few players to play. Accordingly, HSV were awarded the win, but after protests from the opposition they were practically forced to refrain from the title. Because of this, there was no official champion that year. The year after, in 1923, HSV became official champions of Germany after beating Union Oberschöneweide. In 1928 Hamburger SV took their next national title. In that team was Tull Harder, who scored 56 goals in 22 matches. From 1946 to 1963, HSV dominated the Oberliga Nord regional league. They won the regional title every year except in 1949 and 1954. In 1954 Uwe Seller made his national team debut, and for the next twenty years the striker was the star of HSV and a key player in the West Germany national team. In 1960 Hamburger SV became official German champions for the second time, and Uwe Seller scored 49 goals in 33 matches. Hamburger SV in the Bundesliga and Europe In 1963 the Bundesliga is formed. Hamburger SV were one of 16 clubs to be invited to join in the first season, and they accepted. Since then, they are the only team never to have been relegated. Actually, since the merge in 1919, the club has never experienced relegation. They won the German Cup in 1963 but the league title proved to hard. In 1973 HSV won the league cup, and among the players brought to build on that success was Manfred Kaltz. With reinforcements made, HSV became a regular figure in the top of the Bundesliga. Hamburger SV had their most successful period between 1976 and 1987. They dominated the domestic competitions and were among the best clubs in Europe. A 1976 German Cup win was followed in 1977 with a win in the Cup Winner's Cup, HSV beating RSC Anderlecht 2-0 in the final. In 1979 HSV once again became German champions, with Kevin Keegan scoring 17 goals. HSV had become a very good team and they invested heavily to become even better. Two HSV players, Manfred Kaltz and Horst Hrubesch, helped West Germany win the 1980 European Championship. Kevin Keegan had been bought from Liverpool FC. Franz Beckenbauer returned to Germany from his sejour in the USA and joined HSV. Other great footballers followed his example, players like Felix Magath, Wolfgang Rolff and Uli Stein. Hamburger SV played in the European Cup final for the first time in 1980, losing against Nottingham Forest. In 1982 they played IFK Göteborg in the Cup Winner's Cup final and somehow lost. But they couldn't be stopped in 1983, as they went all the way and beat Juventus in the European Cup final. The 1990's were a disappointment for the club, as they sunk to the middle of the Bundesliga and looked to stay there. It wasn't until the end of the decade, with the appointment of Frank Pagelsdorf as manager, that they returned to the top of the league. They came in third place in 2000 and qualified for the Champions League. They played Juventus in Hamburg and the score was 4-4. Hamburger SV were back. Volksparkstadion ![]() Official name: HSH Nordbank Arena Capacity: 57 000 Built in: 1998 Pitch dimensions: 105 m x 68 m UEFA Elite stadium: Yes (Eligible to host Europa League and Champions League finals) Stadium History Volksparkstadion was opened in 1953 and at that time it could hold up to 75 000 spectators. Because of its age it became hard to adhere to modern safety demands, and so in 1998 the board decided it was best to demolilalalala and build a new stadium. In 2000 Volksparkstadion re-opened as a state of the art stadium with a 57000 spectator capacity. The naming rights to the stadium are owned by HSH Nordbank, and as such the official name is HSH Nordbank Arena. It is one of UEFA's 5 star stadiums which means it is eligible to host UEFA Europa League and UEFA Champions League finals, and it will host the 2010 Europa League final. Something rather unique with the stadium is that hardcore fans of the team can get buried in the club's official area of an adjacent graveyard. Last edited by Dampanka; 19-10-2009 at 02:59 PM. |

![]() The current Hamburger SV home kit (left in the picture above) is red and white. Those are the colours of the city of Hamburg, and that is why they are used in the home kit. The Hamburger SV away kit (center in the picture above) is black and blue. The colours are used because they are the colours of the oldest of the clubs that formed the merge to create Hamburger SV. The third kit (right in the picture above) is red because of the Hanseatic history of the city of Hamburg. The Hanseatic colour was red. Last edited by Dampanka; 19-10-2009 at 03:00 PM. |

Thanks everybody.
I'm sorry for leaving this in this kind of state, but I've slept a total of 20 hours this week and woke up at 5.30 this morning. It will be fixed tomorrow as soon as I wake up. Feedback is welcome. Does the text hurt your eyes? Do you think it would be better with more graphics and less text (does anyone read all that? I hope so, it took a lot of time and effort)? And keep in mind, English is my third language. |

"Wake up. WAKE UP!"
Bruno Labbadia felt a firm slap across his cheek coming quick after those words were whispered in his ear. Reluctantly he sat up in his bed and rubbed his eyes. What was that at the side of his bed? An intruder? "Hi there. Don't pass out, you have a fairly big decision to make." Bruno blinked and squinted his eyes. There was some kind of small figure with an orange beard and a green hat stood in front of him. "Am I dreaming, or have I gone mad?" he wondered. He figured a joke would be good to try the tension of the situation. "Eh.. I haven't rubbed any lamp or anything." he said and smiled. "Well I'm not a bloody genie. I'm a leprechaun, me." the midget declared. A leprechaun? Bruno had heard of those. Naughty little creatures that exist only in Irish fairytales, and in his bedroom apparently. "So what brings you to Germany, Mr.?" Bruno asked. "I've come here because about 14 years ago, you somehow managed to find the end of a rainbow and thus I'm supposed to grant you a wish." "Well that one is easy. I'd like my friends and family to stay healthy and happy for all their lives, and let that apply to their offspring and their offspring's offspring and so on as well." Labbadia said. "You know what? That's very considerate of you. So I won't be my usual self and pretend it's Opposite Day. But you actually don't get to decide what your wish is. I give you two options and you choose one. Oh, and me name is Patrick Aodán" "Scheize. What are my options then?" asked Bruno. "You either fall back to sleep and forget I was ever here. Kind of like in Men in Black, only I don't have any cool gizmo thingy. Or.. you could have a completely different start to your season at Hamburger SV. Sure you're in joint top now, but with the amount of injuries to key players you've had, and with the old arses in your squad, it doesn't look like lasting. What I'm offering you is not just the chance to go back in time, to the start of July this year, but a different world when you get there. Only the world of football will change, mind. Everything else will automatically be exactly like it has been these last two months. So what do you say?" "I.. I.. Can.. Erm.." Labbadia stuttered. "Yeah I know, it's nothing like what you'd imagined but for Pete's sake, be grateful! Now, make your choice." Patrick hissed. "Can I think about it?" "No!" "I'll do it. I choose to go back and have another try. Will I remember this?" *Poof* Last edited by Dampanka; 17-10-2009 at 09:17 PM. |

Bruno woke up with a banging headache and a body wet of sweat. He threw his cover on the floor and went for the shower when his cellphone rang. Upon answering it, he noticed the clock on the display. 10.42 am.
"Bruno Labbadia." "Late on your first day in the job. That won't do the boss' confidence in you any favours. Now get your bum down to the training pitch, the players are eager to meet you. Your tour around the complex and the paper work can be done later." said a voice at the other end of the call. God, he had forgotten. He had been offered the position of Head Coach at Hamburger SV and today was his first day. "I'm very sorry, really sorry. I'll be there in an instant." Bruno said. He would have to skip his shower. Breakfast wasn't to think of. He got dressed in a tracksuit, rushed out to the car on his driveway and drove of in a hurry, almost running over a man walking his dog on the pavement. He got to the gates of the training facilities and was immediatly recognized by the guard and let in. The players were stood fifty yards away, restlessly juggling with balls. He parked his car by the entrance and jogged over to the players. "Hallo. Ich bin Ihr neuer Head Coach. Is there anyone who doesn't speak German?" Bruno said. Half the squad raised their hands. "What I said was: Hi, I'm your new manager." Three men in suits exited the main building where Bruno's car was parked and headed for the training pitch. "Ah, there they are." Bruno said to his players when he identified the three men as the president of the club Bernd Hoffman, the assistant manager Ricardo Moniz and Bruno's own agent. "Come on guys, ten laps around the pitch. And no cutting corners." he said to his players, sending them away so that he could speak to the three approaching men in private. When they arrived he shook their hands and apologised for being late. Then he showed his attention for detail and asked "Where is Jarolim? And Petric? And where is Frank Rost?" "With the appointment of you, Bruno, we are heading in a new direction. Jarolim, Petric and Rost as well as Guerrero, Pitroipa, Mathijsen, Jansen, Ze Roberto, Elia, Benjamin, Rozehnal and Reinhardt have all been sold on." explained Mr Hoffman. "WHAT?!? You've decimated my team to a bunch of youngsters behind my back?!" Bruno shouted so loud that the players jogging around the pitch turned their heads. His agent tried to calm him down. "Chill, Bruno. The players sold, although among the best in the squad, were also the oldest in the squad. And their sales brought in a decent sum of money, a hundred percent of which will go to your transfer kitty." "And you still have Trochowski, Boateng and Silva left." added Ricardo Moniz. "This transfer 'kitty', is it big enough to rebuild an entire team? And don't forget about wages as well." Bruno said. "I assure you, you have all the backing of the board you need." said Mr Hoffman. "I better get to work then. Moniz, go get the physiotherapeuts. We need to do a fitness test. And Mr Hoffman, how will signings work? Am I warranted to approve signings, does it go through you or is there a middle hand?" "You do what you think necessary to improve the team and get results. As I said, you have the backing of the board." answered Mr Hoffman. The three suits left and Bruno shouted to his players, coming in for their last lap "That's enough boys! Be in the gym in 10 minutes!" He smiled at the prospect of rebuilding an entire team and headed for the gym. |
