------------------------------------------ ![]() [Courtesy: ESPN SOCCERNET] MILAN FALL WITHOUT KAKA AC MILAN 1-2 CLUB AMÉRICA 56' Esqueda 66' Inzaghi 84' Marquez ![]() [Daniel Marquez and his teammates celebrate after he scored the winning goal against AC Milan] :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Mexico's Club America continue to surprise their opponents, as they walk away with another win, defeating AC Milan 2-1 after Kaka, the Rossoneri star, left the San Siro to move to Madrid. ATLANTA, United States - Following their shocking victory over Inter Milan in the opening match of the World Football Challenge, Club America surprised us once again. This time beating AC Milan at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Georgia. After Pipo Inzaghi equalized for the Rossoneri just ten minutes after America grabbed the opener, Daniel Marquez scored his first goal of the tournament with only minutes remaining. The first half of the competition's third match was very slow and uneventful. It appeared as if AC Milan were trying too hard to play solid, attacking football as they attempted to fill the void left by the departure of Ricardo Kaka to the Bernabeu in Madrid. The majority of the first forty-five minutes was bogged down in the middle of the pitch, seeing possession changing hands constantly. The difference in Milan's play without Kaka was apparent. Without the Brazilian superstar, Milan seemingly could not spray the ball around the field as fluently as they had in past years. With Kaka gone, it looked as if the Rossoneri were trying to force the ball to Kaka's countryman Ronaldinho. In spite of Ronaldinho's efforts, he failed to really start anything with the exception of his free kick striking the crossbar in the 33rd minute. After the half time rest period, the excitement really started. Just about ten minutes after the teams came out of the huddle for the second time, we witnessed the opening goal. In the 56th minute, America found the breakthrough, coming courtesy of Enrique Esqueda. Salvador Cabanas played a pefect ball through the AC Milan defense, finding Esqueda in the area. The twenty-one year old Mexican then shot with his left foot, beating Marco Storar by putting the ball into the top left corner from about six yards out. However, Milan came back, scoring on America only ten minutes later. Milan caught America on the counter attack, and Frenchman Mathieu Flamini found Inzaghi with a great through ball. America was caught out of position and had no chance to stop the roaring Milan attack. Inzaghi put it away easily, tucking the ball into the bottom corner. As time ticked away and we neared the final whistle, a draw looked certain. But, in the 86th minute, Las Aguilas were able to shock the crowd inside the Georgia Dome, as they grabbed what would turn out to be the winning goal. Guillermo Cerda used his speed to beat his marker on the flank, then sent a cross into the area. The cross from Cerda was absolutely perfect, as Daniel Marquez rose above his defender and sent the header into the bottom corner, beating Storari easily. Despite AC Milan's late attacking effort in attmepts for an equalizer, the Rossoneri failed to find the back of the net, falling to Club America 1-2. + MATCH EVENTS - GOALS 56' Esqueda 66' Inzaghi 84' Marquez - ASSISTS 56' Cabanas 66' Flamini 84' Cerda - SUBSTITUTIONS 45' Onyewu on for Nesta 61' Abate on for Seedorf 70' Beausejour on for Martinez 70' Marquez on for Cabanas 70' Zambrotta on for Antonini 77' Strasser on for Gattuso 80' Chitiva on for Esqueda 80' Harmony on for Flamini - BOOKINGS 28' Flamini 63' Gattuso 65' Jankulovski 79' Balotelli ::::::::::::::::::: + MATCH FACTS Goals: America 2-1 AC Milan Total Shots: America 13-13 AC Milan Shots On Target: America 5-5 AC Milan Corners: America 1-7 AC Milan Possession: America 52%-48% AC Milan ::::::::::::::::::: NEXT MATCH: Chelsea vs AC Milan, M & T Bank Stadium, July 24th, 2009

![]() || 2009-10 PREMIER LEAGUE PREVIEW || ![]() +OUT OF REACH? + Last Season Finish: 4th (72 pts) ARSENAL FC Once again, Arsenal fans had to suffer through another disappointing campaign, where the Gunners failed to bring home silverware. However, Arsenal did remain in the top four in spite of threats from both Everton and Aston Villa who were at times just a few points behind Arsenal. But, Arsenal did hold onto their spot in the top four, qualifying for the UEFA Champions League playoff rounds once again. After making an immense signing in January, bringing in Russian star Andrei Arshavin from Zenit St.Petersburg, Arsenal have lost a multitude of talent this summer. Both Kolo Toure and Emmanuel Adebayor left the Emirates for the Eastlands where they will sport a Manchester City jersey this season. A top four finish could be out of reach for Arsenal this year, especially with on the bubble teams such as Aston Villa, Manchester City, and Tottenham Hotspur making some lucrative signings this off-season. PREDICTED FINISH: 5th. KEY ARRIVALS: Thomas Vermaelen (Ajax) KEY DEPARTURES: Emmanuel Adebayor (Manchester City), Kolo Toure (Manchester City) PLAYERS TO WATCH ![]() THOMAS VERMAELEN (DEF): Arsenal's newest signing will certainly have his handful can could easily be thrust into the Gunners' starting lineup right away. The twenty-year old will be the replacement for Kolo Toure who recently turned in his Arsenal jersey in favor of a Manchester City one. If Vermaelen struggles in the back line against some of the Premiership's top teams, Arsenal could be in for a long, turbulent season. ![]() ANDREI ARSHAVIN (MF): The Russian superstar was the focal point of Arsenal's attack since joining the Gunners last January. Arshavin really lit up the Premier League including a four goal performance in April against Liverpool at Anfield. If the twenty-eight year old can keep healthy and stay on form, he could be a difference maker in the Premier League this season. THE MANAGER ![]() ARSENE WENGER: The Frenchman is going into his thirteenth year with the Gunners after being appointed manager in 1996. During his time at the helm of the London club, Wenger has been the most successful in the team's history in terms of trophies, including wins in the Premier League, FA Cup, and Community Shield. However, Arsenal are yet to win a Champions League under Wenger's lead, and his time at the head of the club could be coming to an end if a Champions League trophy is not obtained sometime soon. HOME GROUND ![]() EMIRATES STADIUM - LOCATION: London, England. - CAPACITY: 60,355. - PITCH SURFACE: Real and Artificial Grass Mix. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ![]() + BREAKING THROUGH + Last Season Finish: 6th (62 pts) ASTON VILLA FC Entering the 2009/10 Premier League campaign, Aston Villa are on of the country's most promising teams. With the likes of John Carew, Gabriel Agbonlahor, Ashely Young, and others, they surely have the potential to break through and claim a top four spot. Aston Villa were busy during the summer, bringing in a handful of players, most notably English winger Stewart Downing from a relegated Middlesbrough side. However, the Villians did lose their midfield maestro in Gareth Barry who departed for the Eastlands as part of Manchester City's summer spending spree. With a revamped squad of sorts, can The Lions break into the top four and qualify for a spot in the Champions League? Only time will tell as Aston Villa are determined to fight their way to the top. PREDICTED FINISH: 6th. KEY ARRIVALS: Stewart Downing (Middlesbrough), Habib Beye (Newcastle Utd.), Stephen Warnock (Blackburn Rovers), Fabian Delph (Leeds Utd.), Richard Dunne (Manchester City) KEY DEPARTURES: Gareth Barry (Manchester City), Zat Knight (Bolton Wanderers) PLAYERS TO WATCH ![]() ASHLEY YOUNG (MF): Ashley Young is only part of Aston Villa's wealth of young English talent along with Stewart Downing, Gabriel Agbonlahor, James Milner, Fabian Delph, and Nathan Delfouneso. With that sort of speed and attacking prowess, Aston Villa make for a deadly team. Expect Young to be a vital part of Aston Villa's success this season, as he will look to control the wings with Downing and Milner. If Young and his countrymen are successful, teams will have a very difficult time going against the Villians this season. ![]() GABRIEL AGBONLAHOR: Young's counterpart will also be crucial to Aston Villa's success this year. With Agbonlahor, John Carew, or Emile Heskey playing up top, Villa have an amazing strike force, consisting of some of the league's best attackers. Agbonlahor possesses game changing speed which is nearly uncontainable for opposing defenses. Expect Agbonlahor to improve on his goal tally of twelve from last season. THE MANAGER MARTIN O'NEILL: After taking over Aston Villa in 2006, O'Neill has made some radical changes. O'Neill has certainly improved the club and really added some fantastic talent to the squad. After Aston Villa skid to a finish last season, really struggling in the second half of the campaign, O'Neill will be looking to maintain constant form this season as he hunts for Champions League qualification. HOME GROUND ![]() VILLA PARK - LOCATION: Birmingham, England. - CAPACITY: 42,640. - PITCH SURFACE: Grass. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

![]() + SURVIVAL IS NECESSARY + Last Season Finish: 2nd (Championship) BIRMINGHAM CITY FC Birmingham played fantastic football in the Coca-Cola Championship last season, finishing runners up to Wolverhampton who also played spectacular football. Birmingham manager Alex McLeish is confident that his side will stay in the Premier League this season, but do The Brum have any chance of staying alive in the arguably the world's best league? Most likely not, as Birmingham certainly lack a solid defense. They will need to be carried by their vibrant strike force consisting of Cameron Jerome, James McFadden, Kevin Phillips, Marcus Bent, and new signing, Cristian Benitez from Ecuador. If Birmingham can survive this season, it will certainly be a surprising result. PREDICTED FINISH: Relegation - 20th KEY SIGNINGS: Cristian Benitez (Santos Laguna), Joe Hart (Manchester City), Barry Ferguson (Rangers), Roger Johnson (Cardiff City), Lee Bowyer (West Ham United) KEY DEPARTURES: Stephen Kelly (Fulham), Scott Sinclair (Chelsea). PLAYERS TO WATCH ![]() BARRY FERGUSON (MF): After his four year spell in the Scottish Premier League, Ferguson returns to England to reunite with Alex McLeish who coached him with Rangers for three years. McLeish claims that Ferguson has unfinished business in the Premier League following his two seasons with Blackburn Rovers. If Ferguson can keep up with the pace of the Premier League he could be a wonderful buy for Birmingham. But, if he turns out to be too slow, he will most certainly be a flop. ![]() CHRISTIAN BENITEZ (ST): Birmingham were able to purchase Benitez from Santos Laguna for a club record fee, ranging from Ł6 million all the way to Ł9 million as the fee has been undisclosed. Benitez is not the strongest, most physically imposing player out there, so it will be very intriguing to see if the Ecuadorian international can fit into English football. If Benitez's size does pose a problem, he will certainly be a fantastic player for Birmingham this season as they fight to stay in the Premier League. THE MANAGER ![]() ALEX MCLEISH: After a multitude of success with Rangers, McLeish was offered a job at Birmingham City, one he would accept. Although McLeish could not save the club from relegation in his first campaign, he brought them back up immediately for this season. McLeish has also greatly improved the club's backroom staff, improving in critical areas such as scouting. HOME GROUND ![]() ST.ANDREW'S STADIUM - LOCATION: Birmingham, England. - CAPACITY: 30,079. - PITCH SURFACE: Grass. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ![]() + FIGHTING TO STAY UP + Last Season Finish: 15th (41 pts) BLACKBURN ROVERS FC Blackburn suffered through a turbulent year last season, finishing just outside of the relegation zone with forty-one points. However, this season could be the year the Rovers move down to the Championship. Although they have attempted to bolster their squad after the departures of Roque Santa Cruz and Matt Derbyshire, it still may not be enough with the strength of the rest of the league. The main question will be where will Blackburn's goals come from? Benni McCarthy? Franco di Santo? Will Nikola Kalinic be the man? There are also questions on the other side of the pitch. What happens if injury strikes Ryan Nelsen or Christopher Samba? Gael Givet was purchased, but will he be enough to steady this shaky Blackburn defense? If injuries strike a thin Blackburn side, Sam Allardyce could have many headaches as most likely his team will be on the wrong end of the table come May. PREDICTED FINISH: Relegation - 19th KEY SIGNINGS: Franco di Santo (Chelsea), Gael Givet (Marseille), Nikola Kalinic (Hadjuk Split), Michel Salgado (Real Madrid), Pascal Chimbonda (Tottenham Hotspur) KEY DEPARTURES: Roque Santa Cruz (Manchester City), Matt Derbylalalalae (Olympiakos), Andre Ooijer (PSV Eindhoven), Stephen Warnock (Aston Villa) PLAYERS TO WATCH ![]() RYAN NELSEN (DF): Blackburn's captain will surely have to step up his game this season as his side really lack cover in the defensive third of the pitch. Nelsen will have to step up to the plate and play solid defense alongside Christopher Samba if Blackburn want to have a chance of survival. If either Nelsen or Samba go down with an injury or hit a run of poor form, Blackburn could really be in huge trouble this season. ![]() NIKOLA KALINIC (ST): Kalinic will most likely be rotated into the lineup with Franco di Santo and Benni McCarthy this season after joining from Hajduk Split for Ł6 million. The twenty-one year old has been described at "the future of Croatian football," by Slaven Bilic. He has also been tagged as "Croatia's Ibrahimovic." Surely, Blackburn fans will be expecting big things from the Croatian international, but the pressure of Premier League success and a relegation fight could get to Kalinic. THE MANAGER ![]() SAM ALLARDYCE: In December Allardyce was hired as Blackburn's new manager following the firing of Paul Ince who only lasted about a half of the season. Blackburn struggled under Ince, fighting relegation, but Allardyce saved the Rovers from the drop, leading them to a fifteenth place finish in the table. But, this year, Allardyce may not have the talent at his disposal to survive relegation as he will have to pull off all his finest managerial miracles to keep Blackburn in the Premiership. HOME GROUND ![]() EWOOD PARK - LOCATION: Blackburn, England. - CAPACITY: 31,367. - PITCH SURFACE: Grass.

![]() + STEADILY IMPROVING + Last Season Finish: 13th (41 pts) BOLTON WANDERERS FC Since finishing in seventh in the 2006/07 campaign, Bolton have really moved down. Following their seventh place finish, they just missed out on relegation finishing in sixteenth. But, since that bottom of the table finish in 07/08, Bolton have been improving. Last season The Trotters finished in thirteenth and were only nine points away from a top ten finish. Gary Megson may be on the hotseat this season, but will certainly be looking for an improvement this year, and he proved that with his off-season purchases. Bolton have a mediocre squad this year, one that could allow them to move up a few spots in the Premiership table. We all know they are not one of the Premier League's "glamour" teams, but this season could see Bolton make some strides towards the right side of the table. PREDICTED FINISH: 13th. KEY ARRIVALS: Sean Davis (Portsmouth), Paul Robinson (West Brom), Zat Knight (Aston Villa), Ivan Klasnic (Nantes), Lee Chung Yong (FC Seoul) KEY DEPARTURES: None. PLAYERS TO WATCH ![]() GARY CAHILL (DF): Over the off-season, Bolton seriously reinforced their backline, already adding to the talent they have with Gary Cahill and Gretar Steinsson. Also with Zat Knight coming in, Bolton will be difficult to score on. If Cahill, the twenty-year old, can stay fit and in form, Bolton will surely be able to hold off some of the better attacks in the Premiership. ![]() KEVIN DAVIES (ST): The Bolton skipper will be the leader of the attack this season and will have more to work with Johan Elmander, Ivan Klasnic, and other around him. Davies is a good Premiership player who can really be a force at times and with a good attack, we could a see goal coming at anytime from this Bolton squad. THE MANAGER ![]() GARY MEGSON: Although Gary Megson may not be every Bolton fans' cup of tea, but he has done a decent and steady job since joining the club in 2007. Since arriving at the Reebok Stadium, Megson has made many more additions to his squad than his mid-table rivals and proved this season that he is aiming for a top ten finish. HOME GROUND ![]() REEBOK STADIUM - LOCATION: Bolton, England. - CAPACITY: 28,723. - PITCH SURFACE: Grass. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ![]() + NO PUSHOVERS + Last Season Finish: 5th (Championship Playoff Winner) BURNLEY FC Burnley were the surprise package of last season's Championship, making their way through the playoff to earn promotion to the Premier League. Burnley showed enough quality in their countless clashes with Premiership opposition last season to prove that they will not be this year's pushover side. Owen Coyle has engineered a good side, one which combines both creativity, a bit of flair, and grit and determination. Coyle brought in Steven Fletcher from Hibs, a striker that will definitely score goals if he is presented with the opportunity. The squad may lack recognized Premiership talent across all areas of the pitch, but if the Clarets can keep the unrivalled team ethic and determination that propelled them to last season’s success, they should find themselves just safe from danger at the end of the campaign. PREDICTED FINISH: 16th. KEY ARRIVALS: Steven Fletcher (Hibernian), Tyrone Mears (Derby County), David Nugent (Portsmouth), David Edgar (Newcastle Utd.) KEY DEPARTURES: None. PLAYERS TO WATCH ![]() STEVEN CALDWELL (DF): After joining Burnley in 2007, Steven Caldwell is already the club's captain and the focal point of the Clarets's defense. Caldwell will be a crucial part of Burnley's success this season. Burnley did not really bolster their defense during the transfer window so Caldwell's performance will be vital the club as they fight to stay in the Premiership. ![]() STEVEN FLETCHER (ST): The Scottish striker came over from Hibernian this summer for Ł3 million, being Burley's big signing of the market. Fletcher will be one of Burnley's main men in the attack this season. Fletcher brings a big reputation with him over from Scotland after netting over forty goals for Hibs in his five year stint. THE MANAGER ![]() OWEN COYLE: The Irishman took over the managerial post at Burnley in 2007 and after only a season in charge brought the Clarets to the Premier League by winning last season's Championship playoff. Coyle made some hefty additions to the squad and will be looking to keep his side in the top tier of English football this year. HOME GROUND ![]() TURF MOOR - LOCATION: Burnley, England. - CAPACITY: 22,546. - PITCH SURFACE: Grass.

![]() + IT'S THE TIME + Last Season Finish: 3rd (83 pts) CHELSEA FC This season, Chelsea are the Premier League's projected favorites. It seems impossible that Chelsea won't win the league, with their squad as strong as ever with the additions of Yuri Zhirkov and highly talented striker, Daniel Sturridge, as well as their rivals getting weaker. With the implement of Carlo Ancelotti's new diamond formation, Frank Lampard will have the opportunity to dominate the midfield and score a lot of goals, as opposing defenses will also struggle to contain the partnership of Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka. John Terry also pledged his future to Stamford Bridge, signing a new contact, leaving the Chelsea backline unchanged, a backline which conceded only twenty-four goals last year, the lowest total in the Premier League. Although The Blues have a similar amount of star power as their rivals, it will be their unprecedented depth that will see them through to their third Premier League title of the decade in May. PREDICTED FINISH: 1st KEY ARRIVALS: Yuri Zhirkov (CSKA Moscow), Daniel Sturridge (Manchester City), Nemanja Matic (MFK Kosice), Ross Turnbull (Middlesbrough) KEY DEPARTURES: Franco di Santo (Blackburn Rovers), Ben Sahar (Espanyol), Michael Mancienne (Wolverhampton), Andriy Shevchenko (Dynamo Kyiv). PLAYERS TO WATCH ![]() FLORENT MALOUDA (MF): Malouda began to settle in as a Chelsea player towards the end of last season, really displaying some of his best performances. This year, Malouda will start on the left wing, opposite of Michael Essien, or Joe Cole once the Englishman returns from injury. Malouda has terrific speed as well as fabulous crossing ability. But, if needed, Malouda could rotate into the center, playing at the top of Carlo Ancelotti's diamond formation, tucked behind the strikers. ![]() FRANK LAMPARD (MF): With the change of formation under Ancelotti, Frank Lampard will be slotted behind Drogba and Anelka where will be given the chance to score a number of goals as well as tally a solid number of assists. Expect the English international to have one of his best seasons to date and dominate the Premiership under his new boss. THE MANAGER ![]() CARLO ANCELOTTI: After multitudes of success at the San Siro, including two Champions League trophies, Carlo Ancelotti comes to London searching for a new challenge. After a heartbreaking in 2008's Champions League final against Manchester United, and last season's depressing semi-final fall against Barcelona, Ancelotti is looking to take Chelsea over the hill and give them their first piece of Champions League silverware. Implementing his new formation, expect to see an entirely new Chelsea style of play, one that could really dominate the league, as well as Europe. HOME GROUND ![]() STAMFORD BRIDGE - LOCATION: London, England. - CAPACITY: 42,055. - PITCH SURFACE: Grass. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ![]() + STAYING IN EUROPE + Last Season Finish: 5th (63 pts) EVERTON FC Once again, Everton were fairly quiet on the transfer market much to the dismay of their supporters. However, Everton's lack of summer signings has not stopped them in the past, and will surely not hinder them this year. John Heitinga and Sylvain Distin have been brought to the Merseyside as replacements for Manchester City bound defender, Joleon Lescott. The Everton defense should stay fairly similar to last year's, that is considering Phil Jagielka returns to full fitness as scheduled. If Jo, Louis Saha, and Yakubu can all stay fit for the majority of the year, The Toffees will be in good shape. Everton are one of the more stable clubs in England’s top flight, and despite a a typically low-key summer will surely canter home to Europa league football for another year. PREDICTED FINISH: 8th. KEY ARRIVALS: Sylvain Distin (Portsmouth), John Heitinga (Atletico Madrid). KEY DEPARTURES: Joleon Lescott (Manchester City), Lars Jacobsen (Blackburn Rovers) PLAYERS TO WATCH ![]() PHIL JAGIELKA (DF): Assuming Phil Jagielka successfully recovers from last year's season-ending injury, he will be Everton's key man in the back line. With Joleon Lescott gone to the Eastlands to play for Manchester City, Jagielka will certainly have to step up to the plate and help compensate for the gaping hole left by Lescott's departure. ![]() JO: Everton certainly possess a solid array of attacking players, consisting of Yakubu, Louis Saha, and youngster James Vaughan, but loan signing, Jo, may be the most important. The Brazilian had a splendid loan spell with The Toffees after disappointing in Manchester. After scoring twice in his Everton debut and going to score three more goals before the season's conclusion, Everton made it a priority to bring him back, and did so on a season-long loan. If the Everton strikers can stay healthy, expect David Moyes's side to have a very formidable attack. THE MANAGER ![]() DAVID MOYES: The Scotsman is renowned as one of the Premier League's best managers and has been with Everton since 2002. During his time with The Toffees, Moyes has made some of the most crucual signings to the club's success, purchasing players such as Tim Howard, Joleon Lescott, Phil Jagielka, Tim Cahill, and Mikel Arteta, among many others. Moyes will be looking to bring his side back into the Champions League after just missing out last season. HOME GROUND ![]() GOODISON PARK - LOCATION: Liverpool, England - CAPACITY: 40,158 - PITCH SURFACE: Grass

|| 2009-10 PREMIER LEAGUE PREVIEW ||
![]() +DESTINATION: EUROPE+ Last Season Finish: 7th (53 pts) FULHAM FC After pulling off the miraculous great escape in 2007/08, Fulham have been steadily improving under Roy Hodgson, where failure does not appear to be an option. After a tenth place finish last season, Hodgson and his Fulham side will be aiming for a guaranteed spot in Europe. However, Hodgson has failed to make any notable changes to squad. Then again, Fulham do possess players such as Clint Dempsey and Andrew Johnson as constant goal scoring threats, Brede Hangelend in the back, and Marc Schwarzer performing miracles in the net, which could make them one of the Premier League's better sides. PREDICTED FINISH: 10th. KEY ARRIVALS: Stephen Kelley (Birmingham City), Bjřrn Helge Riise (Lillestrřm), Damien Duff (Newcastle) KEY DEPARTURES: N/A PLAYERS TO WATCH ![]() BREDE HANGELAND (DF): The Norwegian defender elected to stay with Roy Hodgson's Cottagers, for now at least. Hodgson will certainly do all he can to keep his pivotal central defender for at least the entire Premier League campaign. If Hangeland does stick around, Fulham could form one of the league's top defenses, especially with Marc Schwarzer inbetween the pipes. ![]() ANDREW JOHNSON (ST): Granted that Johnson can keep healthy for a good amount of time, he could be in a very formidable Fulham attack, also consisting of Clint Dempsey and newcomer, Damien Duff. Johnson possesses great pace, as well as good finishing ability which makes the Englishman a consistant scoring threat. THE MANAGER ![]() ROY HODGSON: After masterminding the "great escape" during the 2007/08 relegation fight, Hodgson's team has greatly improved ever since. After finishing in tenth last season, Hodgson will certainly have a lot of pressure on his shoulders, but we have seen his Fulham squads surprise us before, and to them, this season will be no different. HOME GROUND ![]() CRAVEN COTTAGE - LOCATION: London, England - CAPACITY: 25,678 - PITCH SURFACE: Grass ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ![]() + OPERATION SURVIVAL + Last Season Finish: 17th (35 pts) HULL CITY AFC Hull City, led by Phil Brown, narrowly escaped the drop last season, and even more pressure will be thrown unto them in their sophomore year. However, Hull City did make a few signings, most notably bringing American superstar Jozy Altidore to the KC Stadium on a loan deal. Also, Brown was able to purchase Seyi Olofinjana from Stoke City to add depth in a weak, thin midfield that could cost the Tigers some games this season as they could struggle to keep up with deeper, more talented, and creative midfields. But, with solid players, including new signings Altidore, Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, and Stephen Hunt, Hull have indeed improved their squad, further boosting their chance to survive relegation. PREDICTED FINISH: 15th. KEY ARRIVALS: Jozy Altidore (Villarreal), Seyi Olofinjana (Stoke City), Stephen Hunt (Reading), Kamel Ghilas (RC Celta Vigo), Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink (Free Agent). KEY DEPARTURES: Michael Turner (Sunderland) PLAYERS TO WATCH ![]() GEOVANNI (MF): The Brazilian has seemingly had a tradition of struggling in his second season with a new club, so Geovanni will have to buck this tradition, if not, Hull willl certainly have some more trouble. But, they do have the Premier League talent and quality to fill in for Geovanni. If Geovanni is in top form for the Tigers, they could have a very dangerous attack this season. ![]() JOZY ALTIDORE (ST): Hull City were able to pick up the American teenager on loan, simply to boost their attack. If Altidore can get time in the Hull outfit, he can really prove to be a difference maker, as he has proved to be with the American national team. It will be interesting to see how Altidore can adapt to the English style of play, but he certainly does have the talent to make the change. THE MANAGER ![]() PHIL BROWN: Many observers may have gotten tired of Phil Brown's antics towards the tail end of last season, but it is hard to deny that he got The Tigers off to wonderful start in their first Premier League season. Brown even led his side over Arsenal at the Emirates, with the Hull media claiming it to be the best win in Hull City's history. However, if Brown's antics get to be too much and really distract the players, he could be looking for a new job elsewhere. HOME GROUND ![]() KC STADIUM - LOCATION: Hull, England - CAPACITY: 25,404 - SURFACE: Grass and Astroturf

![]() + REPEATING LAST SEASON + Last Season Finish: 2nd (86 pts) LIVERPOOL FC The Rafa-lution made some big strides last season, and with some fine-tuning, Liverpool could certainly be considered title contenders this season. However, Xabi Alonso left, and will be questionably be replaced by Alberto Aquilani. If Rafa Benitez is given the proper funds to lure in a few more players such as defensive cover, a creative midfielder, and a striker, the Reds could certainly be in the hunt for title. But, the odds that Benitez is going to receive those funds is very low, and without a few more big names, Liverpool's squad does not match that of their rivals. Liverpool took fourteen out of a possible eighteen points against top four teams last season, and only the most hopeful fan can believe Liverpool can repeat that feat. With creativity in the midfield likely to be a problem, Liverpool will probably fall agonisingly short of that title triumph once again this season, maybe even out of the top four. PREDICTED FINISH: 3rd. KEY ARRIVALS: Glen Johnson (Portsmouth), Alberto Aquilani (Roma), Sotiris Kyrgiakos (AEK Athens) KEY DEPARTURES: Xabi Alonso (Real Madrid), Alvaro Arbeloa (Real Madrid), Jermaine Pennant (Real Zaragoza), Sami Hyppia (Bayer Leverkusen) PLAYERS TO WATCH ![]() ALBERTO AQUILANI (MF): Following Xabi Alonso's departure, Rafael Benitez made the decision to bring Italian international Alberto Aquilani to Anfield as a replacement for the Spaniard. Aquilani has been injury prone in the past and if he remains unfit this season, Liverpool could really be in a world of trouble. Some also question if Aquilani will be able to replace Alonso because of Aquilani's attacking mentality. ![]() STEVEN GERRARD (MF): When speaking about Liverpool, Steven Gerrard is almost always mentioned as well. The English playmaker's form will be crucial for The Reds this season, as he will have even more pressure on him this season with the departure of Xabi Alonso. Gerrard had a wonderful season last year, tallying sixteen goals, and leading Liverpool to a second place finish. THE MANAGER ![]() RAFAEL BENITEZ: The Rafa-Lution began in 2004 when Benitez led Liverpool a Champions League title. But after a Champions League final loss to AC Milan in Athens, Liverpool have not been the same. Benitez has been on the hotseat lately, and if Liverpool struggle this season and get off to a slow start, the Liverpool supporters will certainly be calling for Rafa's head. HOME GROUND ![]() ANFIELD - LOCATION: Liverpool, England - CAPACITY: 45,276 - PITCH SURFACE: Grass ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ![]() + CAN MONEY BUY SUCCESS? + Last Season Finish: 10th (50 pts) MANCHESTER CITY FC Mark Hughes has spent big this summer, bringing in a vast number of superstars. With these new signings, anything outside of a top four finish would be a disappointment for the club. With Kolo Toure and Joleon Lescott added to the defense, Manchester City will surely have one of the most consistent and solid back line's in the league. Toure's former Arsenal teammate, Emmanuel Adebayor, will be expected to score the goals, but with so much quality cover behind him, there should'nt be any panic if the Togolese striker does not hit the ground running. The midfield is where the battle for the top four will be won or lost. Stephen Ireland and Gareth Barry will have the pressure to provide the link from defense to attack. Although it may be difficult for Hughes to blend all of these stars into one cohesive unit, talent and the desire to win could certainly lead City to a top four finish. PREDICTED FINISH: 4th. KEY ARRIVALS: Gareth Barry (Aston Villa), Roque Santa Cruz (Blackburn Rovers), Carlos Tevez (Manchester United), Emmanuel Adebayor (Arsenal), Kolo Toure (Arsenal), Sylvinho (Barcelona), Joleon Lescott (Everton) KEY DEPARTURES: Daniel Sturrdige (Chelsea), Joe Hart (Birmingham City), Elano (Galatasaray) , Jo (Everton), Richard Dunne (Aston Villa) PLAYERS TO WATCH ![]() GARETH BARRY (MF): As stated before, the midfield is where the battle for the Champions League will be won or lost for Manchester City. The Citizens will be relying on Gareth Barry to be the leader in the midfielder and make plays behind this ever-so-powerful attack consisting of some of the Premier League's best strikers. ![]() EMMANUEL ADEBAYOR (ST): Manchester City spent Ł25 million on the African striker who had a great career with the Gunners at the Emirates. Surely, Adebayor will have the pressure to score goals for The Citizens and with wealth of talent around him, City could prove to have one of the most prolific attacks in the Premier League. THE MANAGER ![]() MARK HUGHES: The Welshman spent big on transfers this summer, bringing the likes of Adebayor, Barry, Santa Cruz, Tevez, and others to the Eastlands for whopping fees. In Hughes's first season in charge, City reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup, but this season Manchester City will be hungry for more as they are hungry for a Champions League birth. ![]() +OVERCOMING LOSSES+ Last Season Finish: 1st (90 pts) MANCHESTER UNITED FC Despite what Manchester United supporters say, they are still reeling the loss of Cristiano Ronaldo during the summer, as well as the loss of Carlos Tevez to their arch rivals. With these two losses, Antonio Valencia, Wayne Rooney, and others will have to excel in the attacking third if United are to keep the rest of the top four at bay this season. Although Rooney, Michael Owen, and Dimitar Berbatov will score goals, but Ronaldo is one of a kind. Nevertheless, United's squad possesses great depth as always, and the formidable defense that led the way much of last season returns untouched. United will inevitably be challenging for the title again as the season comes to an end, but ultimately they will not be able to match the firepower possessed by some of their rivals. PREDICTED FINISH: 2nd. KEY ARRIVALS: Antonio Valencia (Wigan), Michael Owen (Newcaslte Utd.), Gabriel Obertan (Bordeaux) KEY DEPARTURES: Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid), Carlos Tevez (Manchester City) PLAYERS TO WATCH ![]() LUIS ANTONIO VALENCIA (MF): Sir Alex Ferguson brought Valencia to Old Trafford during the summer as a "replacement" for Cristiano Ronaldo, but we all know Ronaldo is one of those few irreplaceable players. With Ronaldo now at the Bernabeu, Valencia will have to step up as he will be Ferguson's number one choice on the right flank this season. If Valencia can prove to be a constant threat on the wings, Manchester United will certainly have a much easier time as they attempt to hold onto their Premier League title. ![]() WAYNE ROONEY (ST): This will be Wayne Rooney's standout season. With Ronaldo gone, Rooney will be the main source of goals for United, as the offense will mostly run through him. We all know that the England international possesses talents unmatched by strikers around the world, and this year will really be his time to shine. Expect Rooney to have a phenomenal season this year as he is partnered up with either Dimitar Berbatov or Michael Owen up top. THE MANAGER ![]() SIR ALEX FERGUSON: Arguably the greatest manager in the world, Sir Alex Ferguson is looking to lead his Manchester United squad to their seventh Premier League title since the turn of the decade. But, with the departures of two of his biggest stars, Manchester United could struggle a bit more this season than in year's past. However, Ferguson's teams always seem to find a way win to win, and this season should not be much different. HOME GROUND ![]() OLD TRAFFORD - LOCATION: Manchester, England. - CAPACITY: 76, 212. - PITCH SURFACE: Grass. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ![]() +AVOIDING THE DROP+ Last Season Finish: 14th (41 pts) PORTSMOUTH FC With the club almost in suspended animation since Sulaiman Al-Fahim launched his takeover, a lot of players have slipped out the Fratton Park exit door, with very few coming in to replace them. Glen Johnson may be the most high-profile departure, but the exit of Peter Crouch, Sean Davis and a host of other squad players will be felt equally acutely. With little time for manager Paul Hart to make signings before the end of the summer transfer window, expect the club to struggle terribly during the first half of the season. January will see some reinforcements and a boost in form, but it might well prove too little, too late. Portsmouth will certainly have a very difficult time avoiding a relegation year. PREDICTED FINISH: Relegation - 18th. KEY ARRIVALS: Steve Finnan (Espanyol), Anthony Vanden Borre (Genoa), Kevin-Prince Boateng (Tottenham), Jamie O'Hara (Tottenham), Tal Ben Haim (Manchester City), Aaron Mokoena (Blackburn) KEY DEPARTURES: Glen Johnson (Liverpool), Sean Davis (Bolton), Peter Croch (Tottenham), Sylvain Distin (Everton), Niko Kranjcar (Tottenham), David Nugent (Burnley) PLAYERS TO WATCH ![]() DAVID JAMES (GK): With the World Cup quickly approaching David James in the fight to gain the spot as England's number one. This season, James will be looking to put on some of the best performances of his career to impress Fabio Capello and gain his spot on the national team for the 2010 World Cup. ![]() JAMIE O'HARA (MF): The English youngster, on loan from Tottenham Hotspur, will also be looking to impress Capello, as he looks to better his chances to gain a spot in England's 2010 World Cup squad. O'Hara will be looking to be the playmaker in the midfield for Portsmouth this season, possibly filling in for recently sold Niko Kranjcar. The twenty-two year old will be a key contributer to Portsmouth this year, and may stay until the end of the season if successful. THE MANAGER ![]() PAUL HART: Paul Hart will be at the helm of Portsmouth after being made the permanent manager in July. Hart was put in a very difficult situation though, as he had little to no time whatsoever to make transfers following the takeover, leaving his squad very weak after the departure of many of Portsmouth's best players. By January, we could see a new manager in charge if Pompey get off to the woeful start that is predicted. HOME GROUND ![]() FRATTON PARK - LOCATION: Portsmouth, England - CAPACITY: 20,224 - PITCH SURFACE: Grass.

![]() +AVOIDING THE SOPHOMORE SLUMP+ Last Season Finish: 12th (45 pts) STOKE CITY FC It was apparent that home form at the Britannia was what saved Stoke City last season and they will need more of that again this year if they wish to avoid the sophomore slump. Stoke manager Tony Pulis was fairly quiet on the transfer market this season with the exception of signing Turkish striker Tuncay Sanli, as well as Dean Whitehead. While the top ten is likely to be untouched by the Potters, they will most certainly be safe from relegation again, as they do have a Premier League quality squad. Pulis will no doubt ensure both the players and the fans do not rest on their laurels, and with the Britannia Stadium a fortress once again, another season in the Premiership will undoubtedly be greeted by arguably the Premiership’s most vociferous fans. PREDICTED FINISH: 14th. KEY ARRIVALS: Tuncay Sanli (Middlesbrough), Dean Whitehead (Sunderland), Robert Huth (Middlesbrough), Diego Arismendi (Club Nacional) KEY DEPARTURES: Seyi Olofinjana (Hull City) PLAYERS TO WATCH ![]() DEAN WHITEHEAD (MF): Whitehead will be one of Stoke City's crucial signings this season, as he will looking to be a force in the Stoke midfield. Known as a tough tackler and a solid passer, ever since his days with Oxford United, Whitehead will anchor the center of Stoke midfield, as well as rotating in at the right back position to provide some depth in the defense. ![]() TUNCAY ŞANLI (ST): Like Whitehead, Tuncay will be a very crucial signing for The Potters. Ricardo Fuller was Stoke's main contributer in terms of offensive productivity, and this year being paired with one of the Premiership's top strikers will only add to how dangerous this Stoke strike force will be, Expect Stoke to form one of the Premier League's most prolific attacks this season. THE MANAGER ![]() TONY PULIS: After taking charge of The Potters for the second time in 2006, Tony Pulis led the club to their first Premier League appearence in twenty-three years, thanks in large part to his success in the transfer market in previous years, bringing in the likes of Ricardo Fuller, Danny Higginbotham, Dave Kitson and Rory Delap. With more key signings this year, Pulis has really strenghtened his squad, making his intentions of staying up vividly clear. HOME GROUND ![]() BRITANNIA STADIUM - LOCATION: Stoke-On-Trent, England - CAPACITY: 28,323 - PITCH SURFACE: Grass ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ![]() +SEEING THE LIGHT+ Last Season Finish: 16th (36 pts) SUNDERlAND AFC Last season, Sunderland were nearly dragged down to the Championship with two of their rivals, but barely hung onto life in the Premiership. It was clear that under the management of Roy Keane, the Black Cats were under-performing, in spite of their talent. Now things are looking brighter this season at the Stadium of Light with Steve Bruce in charge. Goal scorers were really was Bruce focused on this off-season, bringing in ex-Spurs man Darrent Bent and Manchester United youth product, Fraizer Campbell. Certainly, Bruce will have confidence in his attackers to produce goals, as the defense looks to improve on last season's flaws, and Lorik Cana and Lee Cattermole anchor the midfield. Ultimately, Bruce left Wigan because he believed Sunderland had more potential, and we'll see if Bruce can lead The Black Cats to an improved finish this year. PREDICTED FINISH: 11th. KEY ARRIVALS: Fraizer Campbell (Manchester United), Lorik Cana (Marseille), Darrent Bent (Tottenham), Lee Cattermole (Wigan Athletic), John Mensah (Olympique Lyonnais) KEY DEPARTURES: Djibril Cisse (Marseille), Dean Whitehead (Stoke City), Michael Chopra (Cardiff City). PLAYERS TO WATCH ![]() LORIK CANA (MF): Steve Bruce made signing Cana a priority this season and was successful, bringing the Albanian to Sunderland from Marseille. Cana will surely be a intrical part of the Sunderland starting eleven this season, as he, along with Lee Cattermole, will be the stopping forces in the Black Cat midfield. Cana is a strong, aggressive tackler, something Sunderland were really lacking in the middle of the pitch last year. ![]() DARRENT BENT (ST): Obviously, Steve Bruce was most concerned with his team's ability to score goals, and may have fixed that with the addition of Darrent Bent. Playing alongside Kenwyne Jones, the two could form a dangerous attack, with a solid mix of speed, power, size, finesse, and strength. Bent and Jones could be one of the most dynamic striking duos in the Premier League this campaign if they can work well together and learn to further bring out the other's best striking qualities. THE MANAGER ![]() STEVE BRUCE: After some forms of success with Wigan Athletic, Steve Bruce stepped down as the manager to take charge of underachieving Sunderland because of his belief that the Black Cats possessed more talent. Bruce made some big time signings this summer, bringing the likes of Cana, Bent, Cattermole, and Campbell. It will be interesting to see if he can lead Sunderland to the top half of the table this year, after a disappointing sixteenth place finish under Roy Keane in 2008/09. HOME GROUND ![]() STADIUM OF LIGHT - LOCATION: Sunderland, England - CAPACITY: 49,000 - PITCH SURFACE: Grass

![]() +ENDING DISAPPOINTMENT+ Last Season Finish: 8th (51 pts) TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR FC Harry Redknapp hasn’t been able to wheel and deal as much as he would like in the transfer market, but that shouldn’t prevent him from leading his side to a marked improvement on last season’s disappointing campaign. With players of the quality of Peter Crouch, Jermaine Defoe, and Robbie Keane leading the attacking line, much will rely on Luka Modric to create chances. The loss of Didier Zokora is not a massive one, with Wilson Palacios, his replacement, one of the best defensive midfielders currently playing in England. The center of defense may be a problem area for Tottenham, but Jonathan Woodgate and Ledley King should be solid enough in the back. Michael Dawson will doubtless be called upon frequently due to injury, but with Vedran Corluka able to play all around the defense, they have a bit more depth than others suggest. PREDICTED FINISH: 7th. KEY ARRIVALS: Peter Crouch (Portsmouth), Niko Kranjcar (Portsmouth), Kyle Naughton (Sheffield United), Sebastian Bassong (Newcaslte United) KEY DEPARTURES: Didier Zokora (Sevilla), Jamie O'Hara (Portsmouth), Darrent Bent (Sunderland), Pascal Chimbonda (Blackburn Rovers), Kevin-Prince Boateng (Portsmouth) PLAYERS TO WATCH ![]() LEDLY KING (DF): Now in his tenth season with Tottenham, the central defender will be looking to create a formidable partnership in the back line with Jonathan Woodgate once again this season, but health will be a key factor. Both King and Woodgate have been plagued with injuries over the past few seasons, but the Spurs captain is determined to keep fit and be part of a solid defense. ![]() LUKA MODRIC (MF): After signing from Dinamo Zagreb last season, Luka Modric has been crucial in the midfield for Tottenham Hotspur. Modric is a very hard worker with wonderful creative ability, and can beat a player with either a trick or a pass. Expect Modric to play behind the strikers in a playmakers spot, where he will have the opportunity to make things happen. THE MANAGER ![]() HARRY REDKNAPP: Redknapp has been busy this off-season, looking to bring in some missing pieces as he attempts to bring Tottenham to the next level. The ex-Pompey manager brought in Peter Crouch and Niko Kranjcar from Portsmouth, as well as Sebastian Bassong from relegated Newcastle United. After taking over last season, Redknapp led Spurs to an eigth place finish, just narrowly missing out on a European spot. Expect Tottenham to get close once again, but ultimately fall just short. HOME GROUND ![]() WHITE HART LANE - LOCATION: London, England - CAPACITY: 36,310 - PITCH SURFACE: Grass. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ![]() +RAISED EXPECTATIONS+ Last Season Finish: 9th (51 pts) WEST HAM UNITED FC Gianfranco Zola performed something of a miracle last season, leading many to name him one of the finest young managers in the world. With raised expectations, this season should prove tough, but the Italian should have the weapons to cope. With signings noticeable in their absence, much will rely on the continuing good form of Carlton Cole. Luis Jimenez’s arrival from Inter Milan will lend the squad a bit of creativity, and the Chilean should prosper under Zola. With Mark Noble and Scott Parker in the heart of midfield, the Hammers will rarely struggle to match their opponents for intensity. Nonetheless, the squad does look a little thin, and a string of injuries could case real problems. The form and fitness of Matthew Upson will be key to the club’s hopes, and Zola will be hoping to keep hold of the former Arsenal man as he leads the club to the top ten once more. PREDICTED FINISH: 9th. KEY ARRIVALS: Luis Jiminez (Inter Milan), Radoslav Kovac (Spartak Moscow), Alessandro Diamanit (Livorno) KEY DEPARTURES: Lucas Neill (Released), James Collins (Aston Villa), Savio Nsereko (Fiorentina) PLAYERS TO WATCH ![]() MATTHEW UPSON (DF): With Lucas Neill's depature, Upson has been named as West Ham's captain, in his third year with the Hammers. Upson will be the core of Gianfranco Zola's defense this season, and will surely have to stay fit because of the lack of depth West Ham possess in the back line, especially after the horrendous incident occuring to Calum Davenport. Upson will have to be the leader on and off the pitch this year if West Ham really wish to remain in the top ten. ![]() CARLTON COLE (ST): With Dean Ashton set to head out the door, Zola may be questioning his team's ability to score goals. West Ham will have to rely on Carlton Cole to be a presence in the opposing penalty area. Last season Cole proved his worth to The Irons and will have to be even better this season, as West Ham may not be able to afford a lot of missed opportunites in front of goal. THE MANAGER ![]() GIANFRANCO ZOLA: Despite being so closely connected with rivals Chelsea, Zola quickly gained the approval of the West Ham faithful. After a relatively shaky start to his managerial career with West Ham, they rebounded and Zola eventually led the Hammers to a top ten finish and brought a certain spark to West Ham hthat had not been seen at Upton Park for some time. HOME GROUND ![]() UPTON PARK (BOLEYN GROUND) - LOCATION: London, England - CAPACITY: 35,303 - PITCH SURFACE: Grass

![]() +PUSH TO THE TOP HALF+ Last Season Finish: 11th (45 pts) WIGAN ATHLETIC FC Every year it seems a lower league manager is given a chance at the highest level. Roberto Martinez will be hoping his reign is more successful than last season’s managerial newcomer, Paul Ince, who left Blackburn before the season even reached the halfway mark. Unfortunately, the Spaniard hasn’t exactly been helped by Wigan’s off-season action. Antonio Valencia and Lee Cattermole will be key losses, and while Amr Zaki’s attitude won’t be missed his goals certainly will be. A lot of responsibility will fall upon Titus Bramble and Chris Kirkland to steady what could be an unstable ship. Fans will want to see the Martinez do well, but it will be no easy task and the club looks destined to play some part in the season’s relegation battle. Nevertheless, Wigan should have enough ability and experience about them to avoid the drop, and could even push on towards the top half if things really go their way. PREDICTED FINISH: 12th. KEY ARRIVALS: Jordi Gomez (Espanyol), Hendry Thomas (Deportivo Olimpia), Jason Scotland (Swansea City). James McCarthy (Hamilton), Scott Sinclair (Chelsea) KEY DEPARTURES: Luis Antonio Valencia (Manchester United), Lee Cattermole (Sunderland) PLAYERS TO WATCH ![]() TITUS BRAMBLE (DF): With a shaky team and a questionable defense in particular, a lot of responsibility will be on the shoulders of Titus Bramble. Although Bramble have a bit of a reputation to make crucial errors, Wigan supporters rate him very highly. Bramble will have to step up to the plate and be the leader of the Wigan defense. Expect Bramble to be one of Wigan's most important players as they attempt to stay out of the relegation battle. ![]() HUGO RODALLEGA (ST): The Colombian international joined during last season's winter transfer window. Rodallega will certainly see a lot more time on the pitch this season under Roberto Martinez, especially with the departure of Amr Zaki. Rodallega certainly has the talent to be Wigan's main targetman this season, and at only twenty-four years of age, has plenty of time to do so. THE MANAGER ![]() ROBERTO MARTINEZ: At only thirty-six years old Martinez is currently the youngest manager in the Barclays Premier League. After spending two seasons with Swansea City, Martinez was able to lead them to promotion in his first season, the first time Swansea had played in the Championship in twenty-four years. Following the 2008/09 campaign, Martinez drew offers from both Celtic and Wigan, and eventually chose to join the Latics. Martinez will not have an easy task this year, as Wigan will probably fight for their lives to remain in the Premier League, but ultimately, they have the talent to survive under Martinez. HOME GROUND ![]() DW STADIUM - LOCATION: Wigan, England - CAPACITY: 25,138 - PITCH SURFACE: Grass ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ![]() +THE HUNT FOR SUCCESS+ Last Season Finish: 1st (Championship) WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS FC Mick McCarthy, the former Ireland international did a good job this off-season adding to his squad well with the additions of Kevin Doyle and Serbian midfielder Nenad Milijas. With one of the most entertaining squads in the Championship last season, Molineux should host some thrilling games this campaign, although whether that will be enough to stay up is questionable. A lot will depend of the goal threat of star striker Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, and whether the likes of Michael Kightly and Andy Keogh can translate their Championship threat to the bigger stage. Defensively, how will they cope with the threat of strikers like Crouch, Bent and Saha, nonetheless Drogba, Rooney, and Torres, week-in and week-out? Unfortunately, McCarthy has an abysmal record in the top flight, and will have to overcome the odds to erase that this season. Ultimately, Wolves have some Premier League talent, and maybe just enough to stay up this year. PREDICTED FINISH: 17th KEY ARRIVALS: Nenad Milijas (Red Star Belgrade), Kevin Doyle (Reading), Marcus Hahnemann (Reading), Andrew Surman (Southampton), Michael Mancienne (Chelsea) KEY DEPARTURES: N/A PLAYERS TO WATCH ![]() JODY CRADDOCK: After breaking a bone in his foot last season, Jody Craddock is back and ready to face the challenges that the upcoming Premier League campaign will hold. Now after months of rehabilitation, Craddock is the Wolves captain, as well as maybe the most important part of the Wolverhampton defense. It will be intriguing to see how Craddock and rest of the defense can stand up to Premier League level strikers. ![]() SYLVAN EBANKS-BLAKE (ST): The twenty-three year old striker was critical to Wolverhampton's promotion run last season, being the main goal scoring threat. Now, with Irish international Kevin Doyle at his side, Ebanks-Blake will be even more of an threat. Wolves do not have the strongest defense, so the pressure will be on Doyle and Ebanks-Blake to provide the goals as survival will be Wolves only objective. THE MANAGER ![]() MICK MCCARTHY: In his first season as Wolverhampton manager in 2006, McCarthy overcame all odds and brought his side to the promotion playoffs where they would eventually fall to West Bromwich Albion over two legs. In his second season, they narrowly missed out on the coveted sixth place spot which would earn them a playoff spot, but it would be in McCarthy's third season, last year, that everything would come together. Wolverhampton put on a show, dominating the Championship, running away with the league, leading the table for an unprecedented forty-two out of forty-six games. Now, McCarthy will have a real challenge ahead of him as he looks to keep his side in the top tier and proving doubters wrong. HOME GROUND ![]() MOLINEUX STADIUM - LOCATION: Wolverhampton, England - CAPACITY: 28,525 - PITCH SURFACE: Grass.
