Default FIFA Ultimate Team Help and FAQ

Common Issues:

I buy cards but they don't seem to arrive?
Some people have reported that after purchasing a pack you will see the game sit on a loading screen for 20 - 30 seconds and/or you will be given an error message.

To claim your pack after this has happened:
  • Back out of the current screen.
  • Re-enter Marketplace or PS Store menu.
  • Select to purchase the card pack you previously just had trouble receiving.
  • Confirm ‘Yes’.
  • Now, instead of seeing the 360 Guide or PS Store come up you will receive the cards you have previously purchased (without getting charged).


I start UT and then it is stuck on a black screen, buttons don't work but the camera is moving
  • This means the servers are up but the database is down, so UT is unplayable. This usually because we are updating or fixing things in the game.
  • We're looking for a more graceful way of handling this in the future.
No Ultimate Team option on the main menu of FIFA
  • If the servers are down, you will not see Ultimate Team on the FIFA main menu. The option only appears if the EA servers are operational.
PS3 only:

Where do I buy Ultimate Team?
For PS3 users unsure of where to get the correct and compatible DLC

  • FIFA UT compatible with BLUS30176 will be in the NA store
  • FIFA UT compatible with BLES00314 and BLES00315 will be in the EU store
  • FIFA UT compatible with BLlalala0071 will be in the Asia store.
X360 only:

My UT download stays as pending.
  • Don't stay in FIFA when downloading, go out to the dashboard.
  • The 360 XDK we're on will suspend downloads if it detects network activity, which in FIFA is the ticker news.
Day 1 - Marketplace Mistake
  • The premium unlock key was not supposed to be visible to buy on Marketplace. It is now hidden but was not for some hours yesterday.
  • So if you bought this key from Marketplace and your game does not unlock, please delete all your UT content including this key and get the UT DLC again, then run FIFA and play the mode.
UT Installation Steps:

If you can't run UT and it's not due to the servers being down, see latest status in the first part of this post, then take a look at these instructions to see if they help.

PS3 - UT Installation Steps:

1.Boot FIFA09
2.User is prompted to download the patch (Version 1.02)
3.Press <X> to download the patch. Patch will install automatically once downloaded.
4.Wait for FIFA09 to boot.
5.Advance to FIFA09 Main Menu.
6.Select ‘Ultimate Team’.
7.User is prompted to choose a language to download. Select any language and press <X>. NOTE: The text informs the user that FUT will be available the next time FIFA09 is restarted.
8.User is taken to the PSN Store where the DLC is available for zero cost.
9.Start the download.
10.When download finishes user receives a message informing that the download has completed – please install.
11.Press the <PS> button and choose ‘Quit Game’.
12.Return to the XMB --> Game.
13.Scroll down to “FIFA09 Ultimate Team – English’ and press <X> to install.
14.Wait for the DLC to install.
15.Reboot FIFA09.
16.Advance to FIFA09 Main Menu.
17.Select ‘Ultimate Team’.
18.User is shown the Intro video and then taken to the FUT Main Menu.
19.Follow Main Menu à Buy, Trade, Collect à PlayStation®Store
20.User is prompted to purchase the game or cancel. Select ‘Purchase’.
21.Advance past PSN legal screens to enter the PSN Store overlay.
22.User is prompted with the option to download the FIFA09 Ultimate Team Premium Unlock for a fee (price dependent on region).
23.Start the download.
24.When download finishes user receives a message informing that the download has completed.
25.Press <Circle> to back out to the FUT Main Menu.
26.Follow Main Menu --> Buy, Trade, Collect --> PlayStation®Store.
27.This time the user is not prompted to purchase the game. Instead they can see the card packs available to purchase via the PSN Store.
28.Press <Circle> to return to the FUT Main Menu.
29.Follow Main Menu --> Buy, Trade, Collect --> Trading.
30.User is able to access the Search, Trade Pile & View Trade Status features of the game now.
31.Game is now unlocked and all features are available to the user.

Troubleshooting Steps

Slow Download Speeds:

1.XMB --> Network --> Download Management.
2.User will see all active downloads.
3.There should only be one for FIFA09 Ultimate Team in the language you selected.
4.Any more than one is drastically slowing the download speed for all active downloads.
5.Canceling multiple downloads will reduce the time to download.


Some DLC Languages Aren’t Available:

1.This is because the game has detected that the language has been downloaded before and believes the user wants to download a different language.
2.The user is either currently downloading or has already downloaded the language that is missing.
3.Follow XMB --> Network --> Download Management to see if there are any downloads still active.
·If still active, wait for download to complete and follow steps 12 to 31 above.
·If the download had completed the XMB option ‘Download Management’ will not be seen.
o Follow XMB --> PlayStation®Network --> Account Management --> Transaction Management --> Download List.
o The user should see 1 or 2 items in this screen:
1.FIFA09 Ultimate Team – English (or other) 1370MB, and/or
2.FIFA09 Ultimate Team Premium Unlock 685KB.
o Select ‘FIFA09 Ultimate Team – English’ and press <X> to restart download.
o When download completes user receives a message informing that the download has completed – please install.
o Follow steps 12 to 31 above.

I have been charged for downloading the game but cannot play Ultimate Team:

1. The most important thing is that the Premium Unlock Key is assigned to user’s Online ID. Deleting it from your console will not mean you have to pay for it again.
2. Follow XMB --> Game --> Game Data Utility.
3. Press <X>.
4. Highlight the ‘FIFA09’ option and press <Triangle>.
5. Highlight ‘Information’ and press <X>.
6. Check the Size of this file:

If it is 33MB you have just the patch.
o Press <Circle> twice to back out to the XMB.
o Follow steps 12 to 31 above.

If it is ~1400MB you have the patch and the DLC.
o Press <Circle> once.
o Press <Triangle> once.
o Highlight ‘Delete’ and press <X>.
o Select ‘Yes’ to delete both the patch and the DLC.

o Boot FIFA09
o User is prompted to download the patch (Version 1.02)
o Press <X> to download the patch. Patch will install automatically once downloaded.
o Wait for FIFA09 to boot.
o Advance to FIFA09 Main Menu.
o Select ‘Ultimate Team’.

o User is prompted to choose a language to download.
o NOTE: User will not see the language of the DLC they originally downloaded. This is because the game has detected that the language has been downloaded before and believes the user wants to download a different language.

o If user wants original language they must press the <PS> button and quit to the XMB.
o Follow XMB --> PlayStation®Network --> Account Management --> Transaction Management --> Download List

o The user should see 2 items in this screen:
1. FIFA09 Ultimate Team – English (or other) 1370MB.
2. FIFA09 Ultimate Team Premium Unlock 685KB.

o Select ‘FIFA09 Ultimate Team – English’ and press <X> to restart download.
o When download completes user receives a message informing that the download has completed – please install.
o Return to the XMB à Game.
o Scroll down to “FIFA09 Ultimate Team – English’ and press <X> to install.
o Wait for the DLC to install.
o Follow XMB --> PlayStation®Network --> Account Management --> Transaction Management --> Download List
o Select ‘FIFA09 Ultimate Team Premium Unlock’ and press <X> to restart download.
o When downloaded, follow steps 15 to 31 above.



X360 UT Installation Steps:

Congrats to Besty__1 for doing this and getting it to work!
  • Ensure user has a Xbox LIVE Gold membership.
  • Ensure account has purchased the Premium Unlock key with MS points (to mimic real world users).
1. The most important thing is that the Premium Unlock Key is assigned to user’s Online ID. Deleting it from your console will not mean you have to pay for it again.
2. Enter the Xbox 360 Dashboard
3. Select ‘My Xbox’
4. Scroll right to ‘System Settings’
5. Select ‘Memory’
6. Select ‘Hard Drive’
7. Select ‘Games’
8. Select ‘FIFA09’
9. NOTE: DO NOT DELETE ANY FIFA09 SETTINGS – Personal Settings, Squads, Online Squads, Be A Pro etc etc
10. Highlight ‘FIFA09 Ultimate Team (1.5GB) and press <A>
11. Select ‘Delete’ and confirm ‘Yes, delete’
12. Highlight ‘FIFA09 Ultimate Team – Purchase’ (56KB) and press <A>
13. Select ‘Delete’ and confirm ‘Yes, delete’
14. Press <GUIDE> to bring up the 360 Guide
15. Go to ‘Settings’ tab
16. Select ‘Account Management’
17. Select ‘Yes’ to exit game
18. Select ‘Download History’
19. User should see two FIFA entries:
19.1 FIFA09 Ultimate Team Premium Unlock (108KB)
19.2. FIFA09 Ultimate Team – English (or other) (154GB)
20. Select ‘FIFA09 Ultimate Team – English (or other)’ and press <A>
21. User receives the message “You’ve already purchased this item & may have downloaded it before. Would you like to download this item now?”
22. Select ‘Download again’ and press <A>
23. Wait for download to complete
24. Press <B> once
25. Select ‘FIFA09 Ultimate Team Premium Unlock’ and press <A>
26. User receives the message “You’ve already purchased this item & may have downloaded it before. Would you like to download this item now?”
27. Select ‘Download again’ and press <A>
28. Wait for download to complete
29. Press <B> three times to return to Xbox Dashboard
30. Boot FIFA09
31. Enter ‘Ultimate Team’
32. Head straight to ‘Buy, Trade, Collect’ à ‘Xbox Marketplace’
33. User will be taken to the card pack purchase flow
34. User now has full access to the features of the mode for no additional cost

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q. I have more than one account on my console, can they all play the full version if the unlock key has already been purchased?

A. Xbox 360: Any account (Gamertag) on the console can play, regardless of which account purchased the unlock key.

PS3: Any account on the console can play, regardless of which account purchased the unlock key.

Q. I've already bought Ultimate Team and played it a ton, but now I'm getting prompted to purchase again?

A. Your gamertag or persona must be signed in and using the first controller port on your console to play the game. If you are using another controller port you will receive this message.

Q. The game didn’t charge me to download Ultimate Team, I thought it was $10?

A. The content downloaded is the “trial version” of the game, in which you get 5 free trial games in Ultimate Team. The $10 is referring to the Unlock Key which grants you access to the full version of Ultimate Team.


Q. Do I have to wait for the 5 free game trial to end before purchasing the unlock key?

A. No, there are two ways to get the unlock key with having to play through 5 matches:
1. When attempting to purchase card packs from Xbox Live Marketplace/ Sony PSN Store.
2. When attempting to use the card trading feature.

Both of these options are only available with the full version of the game.


Q. Why can’t I buy Silver and Gold card packs right away?

A. Only Bronze packs are available at the beginning, a certain amount of matches need to be played to unlock the other two:
Silver: 6 matches
Gold: 12 matches


Q. Why am I prompted to buy the unlock key when I try to purchase card packs from Xbox Live Marketplace/Sony PSN Store or trade cards online?

A. These options are only available with the full version of the game.


Q. Do I need to purchase the unlock key to play in the tournaments?

A. No, the tournaments are based on skill points, if enough skill points are earned playing club matches to meet the requirements you can play in the tournaments.


Q. Is there a difference in the cards I get when buying them from Xbox Live Marketplace/Sony PSN Store, as opposed to buying them in the Shop with Coins?

A. No, you will receive the same types of cards using both methods, there is no advantage to using one or the other when getting card packs


Q. I completed an Ultimate Team Achievement/Trophy, why didn’t it unlock?

A. Ultimate Team Achievements/Trophies only unlock if you have the full version (unlock key purchased).


Q. Can I earn FIFA 09 Achievements/Trophies in Ultimate Team?

A. Yes, for example some Achievements/Trophies are based on gameplay requirements. These can be earned when meeting the requirements in Ultimate Team.


Q. Are online matches played in Ultimate Team tracked as ranked or unranked?

A. All online matches played in Ultimate Team are tracked as ranked matches. These are tracked separately from FIFA09 ranked matches.


Q. I put a card in the trade pile/collection book by mistake, can I get it back?

A. Cards placed in the trade pile or collection book cannot be returned to you, they are locked out once the options are selected.


Q. What is the maximum number of cards I can have in my trade pile?

A. The maximum number of cards is 28. This includes all cards either in a live auction or waiting for action in your Trade Pile.


Q. I can see the same card twice in my View Trade Status screen.

A. When one of your auctions expires it is displayed in your View Trade Status with an ‘expired’ icon beside it. This remains there for information only for approx. a week. At the same time, this card is also returned to your Trade Pile for you to either discard or re-post for auction. If you re-post the card it can be seen in your View Trade Status screen twice – once as a live auction and once as an expired auction.


Q. Do games I play in Ultimate Team get tracked to my EASW account?

A. Yes, all matches played in Ultimate Team are treated similarly to FIFA 09 matches, they track EASW stats and award credits/accomplishments.


Q. Can I get rid of my created player in Ultimate Team?

A. No, once created, the player is treated as your team captain and cannot be removed from your squads. You can edit the player in any way from changing the name and appearance, but the player cannot be created from scratch (edit player is just like creating a new player, you have all of the options available for full customization).


Q. Where can I see if my card trades were a success?

A. The View Trade Status screen displays status for all trades that you are currently involved in. To get to this screen from the Ultimate Team Main Menu, proceed to Buy, Trade, Collect  Trading  View Trade Status.


Q. Can I play against my friends in Ultimate Team?

A. As all online matches in Ultimate Team are tracked as ranked matches, you cannot play against your friends using game invites.


Q. If I play a bad game, can I lose skill points or coins?

A. Skill points and Coins can only increase when playing matches, they do not decrease.


Q. I quit out of a match and one or more of my players are missing, why is this?

A. If one or more of your players have only one game remaining on their contract they will expire once a game is started. Quitting a match counts as a match played.


Q. There is no save option, how do I save my progress?

A. All progress is saved to the server in real time so you don’t have to worry about saving. Any time you re-enter Ultimate Team all of you progress will be saved and you can continue playing.


Q. My players are disappearing!

A. Each match you enter will lose 1 match from the starting 11’s contracts. Any subs used in game will also lose 1 match. When a player is approaching their last match a flashing yellow exclamation mark will display besides that card in the Line Up screen. Putting this player into your starting 11 or Subs and proceeding to gameplay will result in that player being removed then next time you enter your Squad Line Up screen. Placing him into the Reserves will preserve him until you can get a contract card to extend him.

Note: Of the 4 match options in FUT, only Online League matches do not take the user to their Line Up screen as part of the screen flow. As a result, users might not be seeing this flashing icon warning and therefore lose players. It is therefore important to always keep an eye on contracts.



Q. I purchased a pack but didn’t receive my cards!
A. Any time you purchase a pack from 1st party, this transaction is saved. Therefore, if you do not receive cards it is probably due to a lost connection between FUT server and the FUT database. However, if the user re-enters the purchase pack flow when connection has been reestablished, they will receive then cards without the purchasing steps.
