Default 7 Common FIFA 09 Mistakes to Avoid

I want to share these common FIFA 09 mistakes that I witness all the time while playing online.

1. Failing to Pass the Ball

A typical FIFA newbie move is to sprint with the ball as fast as possible and try to outrun the opponent's defense. This is a common error, but can be fixed with efficient passing and moving. Let the ball do the work, or else you can fatigue your squad and your opponent will have the upper hand.

2. Ignoring All the Controls

FIFA 09 is one of the most comprehensive soccer games ever because FIFA 09 contains a wide array of controls. You must learn all the controls to fully enhance your FIFA skills. Learn all the basic skills, combos, moves, controls, etc. This will give you a much more comfortable feeling with the game, and comfort leads to confidence when playing FIFA online.

3. Playing Loose Defense

The #1 key to winning games in FIFA 09 is defense. A very defensive gamer can shutout multiple opponents in a row even if he only scores 1 goal a game. Improve your defense by tacking while facing up, clearing anything within your 18 yard box, and by challenging each aerial ball with aggressive heading.

4. Ignoring Substitutes and Formations

Your team management skills must improve to increase your chancing of pulling home the victory. Start out by testing different formations until you find a good groove. The 4-4-2 and 4-3-2-1 worked best for me in the past. Also, don't forget about fatigue and substitutions. Bringing on a fresh face during the 2nd half increases momentum, chemistry, and provides that needed spark to bring home the win.

5. Reckless Tackling

Some gamers let out their frustrations by slide tackling from behind when the game is only 0-2. I have come back from 0-4 deficits to win because FIFA 09 is never over until the final referee's whistle. It is better to quit a game than rack up a bunch of yellow and red cards. You can come back from a few goals, but rarely can you after suffering several red card ejections.

6. Lack of Shooting

There is no such thing as the perfect shot in FIFA 09. You need to take any and every shot you get. A telling sign is when a player records less than 5 shots in one match. Work the goalkeeper, and don't be afraid to shoot from long distance.

7. Lack of Consistency

The more you play FIFA 09, the better you become. Too often, gamers play a few games, get frustrated, then take out their frustration on the EA Sports forums. It will take at least 20 games until you start seeing some results. Aim to play the best competition until your skills improve.

What's the biggest FIFA 09 mistake you see?

and a pretty big mistake ive noticed is lack of positioning, some players dont know how to position themselves so that a opportunity on goal can be made (myself included) but the simple wall pass seems to help this.

Speaking of this i always found that my players would never continue their run when passing the ball to make 1-2 plays, untill the other day when i was reading the manual and seen that there was a pass and move button (L1 + X) has helped alot and allowing good free flowing football.

EXACTLY!!! Naturally what I do is bring out my goal keeper for 2 seconds and let him flow back to the post this positions him in the sweet spot, where he is not too far from the goal post and not to close to it, this takes out the tendencies of the chip shot and forces him to use the powered shot which 75% of the time the goalkeeper saves it.

I like wall passes because they create movement and dangerous opportunities. When I play offense, opponents always run at my striker and I use 1-2 passes to send my forward on breakaways. It's best to hang back on defense, and let the striker come to you.

That way, your backline is strong, and we all know strength in numbers counts.

Excellent post. I actually copied it to word and printed it out. I looked at it before I played last night and I think these tips are already starting to help.

Thanks again!

Great post, Topics like this are the one we need here instead of the complains against users using Man U or barca or manual controls lol.

Yeah I never normally make mistakes as my goal conceded per game is 0.27 which is half a goal a game. I made a few mistakes against this guy earlier and he scored 2 which is funny for me because I hardly ever concede. Good post though.

Lol @ # 6 - I lost my last 2 games. In the first, my opponent had 3 shots, 3 goals. I had 16 shots, 3 goals, 2 posts. Lost in pk's. Second game, my opponent had 3 shots again, three goals. I had 11 shots, 2 goals, and hit the crossbar. I think im just unlucky.

What i find is i bring me keeper out when their player hits the semi circle on the edge of the box. normally the keeper collects it.

Try slowing down before you shoot...like he says. People who hold down sprint for the whole game dont even deserve to score, they're not playing football.

I never change formations and tactics as I can't tell which one works. Sometimes I just play good, sometimes I just don't with one formation.

The tactics can make a difference, especially if you are strong or weak offensively. Playing with 1 striker is hell for me, so I avoid 4-5-1, etc.

Great thread, valuable and constructive instead of the usual petty put-downs in this forum!

I find it useful on defense, if you can't make a standing or slide tackle, keep pestering the guy with the ball by pressing "A" repeatedly. If you dog him like that his shot is likely to be off-target. And if another defender is close, say within 10 yards or so, hold down "B" to have two defenders on him, you generally get the ball.

2nd defender really works well. Sometimes I give up pestering the guy when defending. I'm going to try tapping A more often than I usually do to see if I can mess up his shot. THX

When taking long shots I always slow down before shooting but how long do you hold the shoot button down for? My shots either go in row z or dribble to the Goalie.
