I have been looking all over this forum for a good guide to free kicks but have only found the people that are good not sharing their secrets and a whole bunch of people asking. Well I'm here to give my 2 cents about free kicking and hopefully this helps whoever is in search of help or just curious.
Know your player. With Fifa 09 realistic football is much better than previous games. The power of a shot is very very important. The power depends on a few factors: Shot number of player, height and weight, and to a lesser extent wind. When I say shot number of the player I mean the number out of 99 the player has. Obviously every player has a different number, so the best thing to do is to practice with your player in the arena. Sure you do not get a wall but you can still benefit greatly. Look at the markings on the pitch so in a match you can see "oh right by the arch okay that means 35% power from Beckham". Height and Weight. Now I have noticed from creating a player that his weight and height greatly affects the power of shots. So this is kind of a part of getting to know your player. A player who is 6 foot tall 150 pounds vs another player 6 foot tall 190 pounds, obviously the heavier player will need less power to pound the ball. So when getting to know your players just glance at your free kick man's weight and that will help you in deciding your power in matches. Wind in the arena's. I have seen from eafootballworld.com that many people who have crossed the ball into the penalty area, the cross has gone in for a goal. But for the sake of free kick's I do not think wind be be a big factor so you probabley do not have to worry about this one too much. Curve, accuracy, and the other numbers. When you pick your free kick taker obviously you want the player with the best numbers. But you want to keep in mind that the numbers should be in proportion with each other. Now this does not happen at all with the big teams, but with the poorly rated teams this can make a differnce. Anyway the curve requires practice, a lot of practice. Personally I play on Xbox 360, but PS3 works exactly the same way. The left stick's position is key, directly to the left is a greater curve and straight up is the lesser curve. Just play around in the arena and you will figure out what position to put the stick. Also I believe straight up is max top spin or something, that can help the diving of the ball like Juninho. Also the accurarcy and the other numbers you want to be high and in proportion with each other. By the way I think right footers can only curve left and left footers can only curve right. The LB (L1) button is usually the chip button, but for free shots it is the Driven Shot button. Personally I have had success with this. Sometimes if done over the wall it will go right to the top corner for a goal. Defense to a free kick. Other than jumping at the right time, if the kicker curves it and gets the right height there is really nothing you can do but hope your goalkeeper will get a hand on it. But chances are the goalkeeper is on the opposite side of the wall and will not get to the other side on time. If the goalkeeper is bad enough you do not even have to worry about curving it, you could just kick it on his side in the top corner. I have scored a few goals this way, its very risky but may be worth it. Anyway the key is to get the ball in the top corners, anywhere else and you probably wont make it unless your Juninho. This video may help YouTube - Fifa 09 Free Kick Tutorial for Xbox 360 and PS3 Where you originally aim the ball affects the curve as well. Practice, practice, practice is the key to free kicks. What I have given are just tips that have worked for me, and if you disagree no need to get hostile but kindly give your suggestions for we can all improve from them. Here is a video that illustrates my free kick advice http://www.eafootballworld.com/en_GB/video/2779647

I am a little bit outside the post I'm aiming at, hold up-left (or up-right, depending on the corner and what foot I'm shooting with), and put about 1.5 to 2 bars of power. Sometimes it goes in, sometimes it gets blocked or hits the post, but it's usually always on target.

question guys. When the FK is taken and you want to put a top spin on it do you point the left joy stick all the way up? because the camera changes as soon as you take the shot I don't know which way to point the joy stick. If I follow the second camera angle then to put a top spin I should point the joy stick to the right. Please explain.

I have a few secrets to share, but since I can't record video, they may have to wait to be shared. Normally I make goal compilations, but I may have to make a free kick tutorial. Just not sure when I'll have the time...
I'll try to explain it, but without video, I don't think it will help much. If you're shooting from the Left side of the box (ie 18-30 yards out), shoot with a lefty and swing the camera to the left so you miss the wall with the kicker. Then use no more than 1/3 power and AS SOON AS YOU PRESS SHOOT crank the left stick up and to the right to maximize right spin. If done correctly, you'll score 8/10 shots. If you're shooting from the Right side of the box (ie 18-30 yards out), shoot with a righty and swing the camera to the right so you miss the wall with the kicker. Then use no more than 1/3 power and AS SOON AS YOU PRESS SHOOT crank the left stick up and to the left to maximize left spin. This really works well. I've watched the free kick tutorial and the dude who made the video was using C. Ronaldo (He scores like everytime regardless of what you do, lol) and since the patch was released, I FEEL it has affected kick taking. Try my method and see if it helps. I'll try to make a vid, but it won't be for at least a month or so...

Depends on the type of kick. if you're hitting one up and over most of the time them jumping won't help. If its a driven one from range then thats different. My remedy for that is aiming between the heads. There's usually a set of heads that gives me just enough room to hit the corner. So that if they jump it will still get through at the right height. Unless They're really tall. and most of the time the deflection gives me a corner. Which is something i'll take.

Is there really wind in the game? Are you sure those crosses didn't just go in due to curl on the ball? |

doh! why the hell have i been using the right stick for curl and topspin? no wonder its not been working lol!
also, a lot of times the free kick taker isnt the one i have selected in player roles. how can i change them? in PES you can just select the kicker easily. can you in fifa? |

nah, just long and short isnt there?
i quite often find that 30-40 yards out i get some defender trying to take it, and the good midfielder is nowhere... i can sometimes select them on L2 tho... just odd never thought they might be indirect, but how can you really get a good indirect free kick near the box? |

Is there a way to call a second player to the freekick and have him pass it off to the initial freekick taker? I know it was possible in 08 but so far have not been able to complete it in 09 and nothing is in the manual about it.
