Why is it hard to defend long balls? When the ball is in the air, you should be able to see the yellow spot on the pitch which shows you where the ball's gonna pitch. Select the player closest to the yellow spot and get the ball with your timing.

If you find it too difficult, have a sweeper. Forget long balls. In general, you should be winning headers (the 50/50 aerial balls). If you don't, then you should practice that first.

thanks. these are great tips. can i ask you a question tho, how do u attempt to outdribble the opposition. In FIFA08, you could use the right directional button to knock on the ball and then hit the sprint button to zoom past, but it does not work as well in FIFA09.

The same thing works in FIFA 09 too. As I said, the timing's gotta be different because of FIFA 09's improved responsiveness.

Thanks a lot for your appreciation. I also own and run a Chelsea fan blog - BlueChampions - just an information.

I have to chime in as well and say thanks to the OP for these tips!

I was having a tough time on Professional but then went back to Semi-Pro to try out these tips and ended up destroying the competition 8-0 and 10-0. And now that I've got my tactics sorted I've been able to achieve that sweet spot on Professional where I win or draw most of the time (1-0, 2-1, 1-1) and lose occasionally to the top tier teams. I just finished at the top of the table in Serie A with Inter by barely beating out AC Milan 68 points to 65.

Definitely loving 09 more than 08!

So the AI does make sensible subs and also takes risks in attacking tactics!
Bravo....playing on profesional level. How about you challenge yourself a little more, profesional level is for 5 year old and under.

Wow.Fifa10 defending is sooooo much better than 09. I downloaded the demo a few days ago and, wow. Almost every long ball the opponent kicked, was quickly sweeped out of reach from the attacker. I was impressed.

Wow, mate, you recycled a post that was a year old just to insult someone? That's pretty low.

He plays PES now anyway.
