Great post mate...your input is very useful!

I've only played 1 1/2 20 min. games since I received my copy of the game and I am so impressed w/ the range of detail in it. I am sure EA had a release party when this game dropped on the market for the first. I would have love to have been there to give the toast to an absolutely juicy and gorgeous simulation.

EA Cheers!

This is a really good read. I started my career with Rangers last night. I like you am an average FIFA player not great but not bad. Last year I was playing on World Class so this year I started on professional. After two games 1-1 v. Celtic and 4-0 over Dundee United I decided to go to WC. I am now drawing all my games or losing and getting dominated. One thing I noticed was while playing professional I was on assited for everything. I changed all to semi assist on WC. Would you suggest moving back to professional and using semi? Would this give me a more difficult challenge on professional? I am finding I am out of my depth on WC.

A well written bloody good read, and again commenting on Fifa 09 correctly, it shows your feelings for the game and you manage to get all of my feelings about the game into words, you capture both in your review and tips the excitement the game brings. Its so refreshingly different from the "i cant win easy anymore the game is not as good as 08" brigade

Very nice post...pure class
I play as Arsenal and like to play the Arsenal-way...really
I put free-form and the passing slider at 30
with 80 on pace.
I go to the wing quite a bit not to cross but to widen the game and strech the opposited and always keep the ball until a close range shot or one on one...I find crossing alot is very wasteful of you chances...
Free-form is the key to playing the Arsenal way cause it means there is always a player to pass to(read the in-game info on it it explains a lot)
I am now capable of playing legendary and the only difference between that and world-class is the they close you down from 1 on 1s much better and faster......and they play with much more agressiveness

Default Excellent Post/Thread

Nice! Good points, and thanks for taking the time to write it. I just got the game yesterday, haven't started MM yet. Great to hear how decisive the Tactics are. I can't wait to explore them, that's the kind of stuff I get into, but right now I'm just getting used to how the game feels. Way different.

The crossing is tough. Crosses and corners balloon a bit, but that's probably more realistic, not the straight line of before. Still, it's tough to cross.

09 seems more ergonomic. It's more responsive so I'm not hammering the buttons or clenching the triggers all the time. Way easier on the hands. Has else anyone noticed this?

Bang on! I thought it was only me! Yes, FIFA09 does not ache my fingers. FIFA 08 used to bruise and swell my thumb. The responsiveness in FIFA09 is so good that you don't have to hurt yourself. In FIFA 08, the AI used to hold possession for long periods of time, making run behind it like mad, whereas here in FIFA 09, as I said it's more human! Good point!

Primarily, whether to use assisted or semi or manual is absolutely your choice. Just don't care what people say about assisted controls. You play the game because you want to enjoy. I play on assisted controls and I don't care one bit what people say. As regards difficulty levels, I'd say professional is good and reasonable. It's not too tough or not too easy. You can have a good game.

See this game can play very beautifully if you know how to use it. While there are so many things possible in this game, play in a difficulty level where you can try out all these things and at the same time have fun. If you're finding yourself out of depth in world class, play professional difficulty and enjoy. As I said when you're playing as Rangers, you'd expect that you'd beat most teams in the Scottish league and when you achieve that don't think the game is easy. Start experimenting and play differently. That's my view.

Great post. I have played 60 games on FIFA09 by now; 40 of them as Walsall in MM and i must say that I'm only now starting getting fluent football going (yep it cold be because the guys are actually improving...) - but some games are still a midfield struggle with absolutely nothing that would remind you of beautiful play - still these games are so intense and when you do get that 1-0 decider in the last minutes its absolutely great.

FIFA09 can be ugly, FIFA09 can be beautiful - just like real football.

Wait, wait. We need people's wisdom to tell us how to play with Chelsea on Professional?

When I started playing Fifa 09 I was using default assisted settings and was wondering why I was unable to really score a veriaty of different goals.

I've now moved to some semi and some manual and the game really begins to open up.

If I miss the target, it's my fault, if I pass to strong or to weak it's my fault.

From A PES veteran I'm really loving this game.

Tactics to are awesome, I just wish I could assign different formations to the d-pad too.

i.e. 4-4-2 to 4-3-3 etc.

I'm sure you can do that. Go to 'quick tactics' and assign your customised formations to D-pad.

Guys this is my first post on the forum. I was reading the forums and i saw your writings on this thread and this is a very mature thread. Keep up this exchange of ideas about tactics and ways of playing . It is really educating. This month i am waiting to get a console (probably ps3) just for this game. My first experience was yesterday and i was thrilled.

gd thread

I play as Aston Villa in manager mode and i changed my tactics in the second season because i was loosing some easy goals on World Class difficulty.

I hav my created guy(overall = 99) and Agbonlahor(ovrall = 9 up front and they weren't getting the ball so i put the tactics to short passes, quick build up, wide play and i hav a free form build up for chance creation with most coming from passing. I too suck at crossing but occasionaly try one and hav scored one or two now

I found in my first game with these tactics that i was controlling the play much better and creating a lot better scoring chances . i slowly moved up the league and won it on goal difference. It really does help you the custom tactics so i would also advise you to spend some time working out what works for you.

thanks bluchampblogger

Perhaps we should rename this thread the sensible gamers thread, I think the posts here have been thoughtful and well constructed, no one is moaning because they cant boss 09 like they did with 08. Its a different game totally and it takes practise and threads like this to improve your play. Someone hit the nail on the head i think the percentage of possestion in 09 seems to be 50-50 human vs CPU and it makes it nicer to keep the ball, the one thing for me that sets this game out from the competition is the arial game, the bounces, the jumping up and missing a header, the jostles and collisions, yes it can be ugly but its dependant on the team you play, Blackburn and Bolton in particular can be frsutrating to play against and this is what makes it real.

The long ball teams do play long ball game. If you go to team management and see the tactics set up of these teams, you'll know that the slider for passing would be in the high 80s, which means predominantly long passing. Interestingly, if you check the same for Brazil, it would be 15 or something!
How do you defend the long ball....????
I drew 3-3 vs Sunderland last night...
I was up 3-0 at half (tevez hat trick)
And didn't change formations....
I just tried to keep hold of the ball and pass it about for the second half..
I would take sots but only open ones.....

I conceded 3 second half goals as cisse' and diof ran me ragged...

I was playing as man u ....

The next game I beat everton 8-1

go figure
