I've only played a bit with the Assited controls on (PES style), so Manual may feel a bit different.
The two wordsI hoped I'd never hear in a FIFA09 review.

I can't quite remember what PES5 was like in terms of gameplay. How similar is FIFA09 to Euro2008?

I don't think it's bad news. Reaction to controls and dribbles have been good in all PES games, just because it's in PES 2008 doesn't mean it's bad.

You know sometimes in FIFA when you want your player to trap the ball and dribble, but it takes way too long and the opponent steals it easily? I think that's what they mean when they say dribble reaction has improved.

Honestly, I think the intitial poster is just complaining and has no idea what he is talking about. How much time have you gotten logged into playing fifa 08, like 5 hours? I play my friends who know almost nothing about football and beat them like 10-2. I watch football, live football, and play football. I think it's easy to tell by watching a game of fifa who knows the game.

I agree!!!

Good, good. I think that almost every other poster on here who actually plays fifa would support my point too.

Sorry but what exactly is your point, and what does it have to do with the thread? You seem to think I'm moaning about losing or something!?!

Just to clarify my initial point is about EA spending too much time on gimmicks than on gameplay which has resulted in a good-looking game full of glitches.

Sos i'm being judgmental but I've been fooled by EA several times before.
That game has barely come out of my disc tray since I got it on release date.

I think what JC83 is trying to point out (sorry if I'm wrong JC ), is that the gameplay development is being slightly neglected (in favour of new modes & gimmicks) which is resulting in holes in the gameplay.

This allows people that know nout about football to use the same tactic over & over, winning games in the process.

If EA work their arses off to create truly realistic gameplay, then the knowledgable football fans will always triumph over players who try cheap tactics.

So you like it then? lol. Are you saying there's nothing wrong with it? I'm not saying there is, just that it would be quite likely considering it's part of the Fifa series.

If it had more than just national teams it'd still be in my disc tray.

There's certainly problems with Euro. Infact it's got a whole list of bugs (thanks again EA)... but it's an evolution in the FIFA series, and if EA fixed the bugs & added the clubs/modes for 09, I'f be happy.

Luckily for us they're doing more than that. I just hope they don't forget the gameplay in favour of these new gimmicks, no matter how great & inventive they look. It's all very well having Custom Tactics for 09, but there's no point if they screw the gameplay up.

There's always exploits but a true master will win 90% of the time. I mean anyone can be beaten, but a person who knows football and is very good at FIFA will win much more consistently...

Don't worry, I even thought EURO 2008 felt a bit like PES, so it's not that big a deal.

As for JC83's question. I've been playing PES since ISS Pro 98 on the PlayStation, PES 2008 was the first one I didn't buy, got FIFA 08 instead.

sorry to single you out man but can you guys not read or something!!?

This thread is not about winning or losing, it's about EA and the fact that they favour gimmicks over gameplay, cutbacks are just the easiest way to refer to the useless AI. geez

Oh no, I like PES. I played PES2 and owned PES3-6. Great games.

I just thought PES2008 was an utter shambles, really didn't like it at all.

Euro2008 was a good mix between FIFA & PES in my opinion, which is what I'd been waiting for for years. That's why I like it so much, just couldn't justify paying £40 for national teams.

Take it you've not been following FIFA 09's progress then?

I'd wait before you play it before criticising the team as much as you have been.

Nah, and from what I've heard about PES2009, don't think I'll bother playing another PES til PES 2010.

@JC83 - I beg to differ. I've seen major improvement in FIFA gameplay over the past few releases. But, like I said in previous posts, there's no way to fix everything to everyone's liking. There will always be someone who disagrees with something about the gameplay.

That being said, FIFA is light years ahead of all other football releases. Euro alone smacks around anything Konami has released in the past few years. And there aren't unstoppable exploits in EURO (that I know of anyway, lol)...

Before I try to defend cutbacks, what is the exact scenario you are referring to? A cutback like Blanco's goal in the MLS All Stars vs. West Ham?

I know I have been criticising, I was hoping it would be more constructive than it's turned out, I have been following the progress, EA look like they have done a fantastic job so far, I realise that it's only third edition on next-gen etc and if they make as much of an improvement from 08-09 as they did last time it'll be a great game. I'm just trying to be realistic and this year has been the first Fifa in years to impress me, i just don't want to be let down as I have in the past.

It's evolving in the right direction.

Even if the developers can't implement it all into FIFA 09 atleast after 15 years they're finally on the right track!

wepeeler, it's not just cutbacks I'm talking about, but since you ask, It's stupid that if a player cuts the ball back across goal and manage to get past my 'cutback defender' there are times that my teammates have had the ball actually bounce off them (and they don't even react to that lol) into the path of a striker.

I think fifa08 is a good game but for me it's a little overated, that happens becouse of the fact that PES still doesn't have a good next-gen version. I played a lot Fifa08 and Euro2008 and i think the main problem, like many of you pointed here, is in the gameplay. It becomes too repetitive and predictable, not only the AI but even the goals we score seems very similar even after only 10 or 20 matches. I agree that they MUST make a better gameplay in Fifa 09, make an AI less predictable, and more variations on the way CPU plays, make it create plays and not only circle in the wing to cross to the box.

I think they should follow the exemple of NHL 08. Last year they put ALL the efford on a GREAT GAMEPLAY, and even the game having very few options of game modes it is the sports game that i play most on my xbox360. They result is that they won a lot of prizes of sports game of the year and this year they could implement the larger number of game modes with the great gameplay that they already worked on last year.

I really hope that Fifa 09 don't become only another good game, with good game modes but still limited gameplay. I still think thay it will be the best football game for the next-gen, but if the gameplay is not improved it won't be enought, specially becouse someday will be a GOOD PES for the next-gen...

Yes - didn't know about that NHL game, all the prizes etc, sounds quality, which is exactly the point lol it's quality not quantity that want.
