Default Fifa 09 PC - fair comparison.

Against a few of the threads on here saying the Fifa 09 isn't good; actually i think it's extremely good. Okay, Online needs to be improved and there are quite a few features in the game which need to be sorted out but overall if you weighed the goods and the bads, the goods would outweigh the bads by quite a bit. I'm going to do a short review of what I like in Fifa 09 and what i don't like.

Graphics

Pro's
  • Certain(well infact, most) stadiums with "Sunny" Weather look absolutely fantastic. The Graphics are amazing!
  • Quite a few "Cut Scenes"(Player preparing to take a throw in, corner etc) , but not all look, truly next gen and it makes the game so much better!
  • Instant Replay graphics look alot better this year then previous.
  • In only a few stadiums - "wembley" and the "azteca" the camera view from "Broadcast" is much better than this view from other stadiums. The players are natural and move well and the graphics respond to that.
Con's
  • Night mode - Too Dark, the lights look terrible in alot of stadiums with the horrible edge of the lights somehow burring, pixelating into the sky. This is definetely something which i think should be worked on.
  • Overcast Weather - Compared to "Sunny", this is definitely not Next-Gen. It looks very dull and the sky is just a grey colour. Maybe if we could see some clouds and a mixture of blue sky with that then that would be great.
  • Too many "Cut Scenes" are not next gen. The ones that are look great but otherwise it doesn't look great (:
  • On a wet day i'd like to see better water physics. Instead of a just a splash i want to see a detailed splash.
  • The Default Nets- There are many topics on this already. Personally i think the nets look good close up but from far away, ugly. Once patched they look alot better.
  • The terrible 2D crowd!! again there is a few stadiums which the crowd looks good, but generally its horrible. At least get some flags to cover it up! Hopefully this will be worked on.

Gameplay

Pro's
  • Wow has this improved. Passing looks real, movement looks real! Thanks EA
  • New Collision System. I will talk more about this in the Cons but it definetely works.
  • Shooting is .. well .. real. They have the movement and momentum from when the player has shot and it works.
  • New Tricks work a treat!!
  • The clone factor from previous generations of FIFA's has finally been reduced to almost zero; I have a hard time finding two players that look alike now. This makes the game SO much more interesting. Every team has it's own charm now, and any player regardless of ranking can become a personal favourite due to his characteristics. (Thanks Daedalus)
  • Legendary Mode - much better. Before Patch #2, none of the other modes were worth playing on.

Con's
  • Collision System does work but it needs to be turned down ALOT. You can just run into a player and there's a free kick. Hopefully this will be sorted out in a Patch.
  • Heading Physics are awful.
  • Again this should be sorted out in a patch, but the invisible bar is a headache.
  • Free Kicks Where the Foul Was Actually From This really needs to be sorted out. One of the minor things which is letting the game down.
  • The Linesmans Flag - Search the forums for threads on this.
  • There are too many goals from free kicks, especially for the CPU and for us players too. Goals from free kicks should happen more seldom. (Thanks Dimimanos and ChemicalRubber)
Miscellaneous
Pro's
  • I think the widget feature is a great idea although you should have the option to turn them off.
  • Be A Pro - Seasons. Great idea and i'm loving it; A few minor bugs such as the replays not stopping though.
  • Adidas Live Season. GREAT!

Con's/Ideas For The Future
  • The option to have different commentators like Xbox 360 and PS3.
  • Online. This year is basically Fifa 09 without online. I'm not going to go on about it because you can quite easily find something on the first page of the PC Forum, but yes, go back to the 07' style!
  • More things to unlock in the fan shop.
  • With the widget i would love to have the option of making one of them about my manager mode. So the ladder/top scorers/cards etc and maybe even injuries could be visible at all times as with the real life widget. I don't play online so it would be far more worthwhile (Crump99)
  • An option to go straight to a two player penalty shoot out!
  • Personally i think they could have spent more time improving the game than on Mouse Control. Its good fun, yes, but its not going to make me win a game.

I love Fifa 09. Its a huge improvement on its predecessors. Online and a few in-game bugs let it down, but high quality graphics and the fun to play its is great.
Thanks for taking the time to read this!

I'd like to add a HUGE pro when it comes to the visual aspect of the game:
  • The clone factor from previous generations of FIFA's has finally been reduced to almost zero; I have a hard time finding two players that look alike now. This makes the game SO much more interesting. Every team has it's own charm now, and any player regardless of ranking can become a personal favourite due to his characteristics.
Well done, EA!

Thanks for the good comment for Fifa09. But do beware of some PES2009 cronies coming in to this thread to bring the game down.

I have to add 2 more negatives to the gameplay:

- The ball hits the bar way too many times. It is most probably intentional in order to increase the adrenaline - "oh it was so close" and all that - but when it happens so many times it is so obvious that it was intentional that it just becomes dull as in "oh another shot of mine going to the bar...lame". In general there is a lot of room for improvememnts in shooting.

- There are too many goals from free kicks, especially for the CPU and for us players too. Goals from free kicks should happen more seldom.

And 1 more on the graphics:

- Scrolling is awful. The image gets way too blurred when the screen is scrolling left or right. They should definitely fix this. If someone knows a way to fix this through editing the files of the game please let me know. Nutunited you had posted on some earlier thread some settings for the graphics in some file of the game, but I can't recall in which thread, can you direct me to that please or copy them here?

AI Free kicks, even if the ball is like so far away from the goal the taker will definitely shoot, and almost every time it's a goal. And seconded for the guy up there, I scored 2 free kicks with the same player using Recreativo against Man U. Free kicks way to predictable.

Get an editor and put -15 to free kick to all, give a chance guys to the game, i was years in PES community and without edited stats the game wasnt playable. Ok it has flaws but believe me... FIFA09 is in the correct destination.

I agree with there is a lot of room for improvements in shooting, but at the moment i'm not finding any problems with hitting the bar too often.

I definitely agree with this one, basically apart from the acute angles, i know how to score easily from each position. I'll add this; thanks for the contribution!

I remember something about this actually, just not which thread. At the moment its not too bad for me so i won't add it but if i do find any problems with it i will add.

I have some criticisms on this game :

1.The players do not react when they should react. The opponents are not very much reacting in tricks, the turns and the fakes too. If this is shorted it would be more fun to play. There should be slipping of players or players try hard to get to the ball. Also when you shoot and the ball again comes to you by means of rebound or anything like that then the player who shot it do not react quick. The same is with the goalkeepers. The player becomes inactive.

2.Why do EA add few tricks? They should add more tricks like in NEXT gen and make them easier to perform. Add bicycling, ball going through the legs of the opponent(like one in EURO 2004) and also the goalkeepers. Give more grass balls shots. Give a new type of shot in which ball bounces off the ground when shooting.

3.EA should import all the animations that are available on the next gen versions.

4.Get 3d crowds....at least in the cinematic. Add flags.

No. If you time it correctly, you can often mess up the AI's free kick attempt by charging out a player or making the wall jump. Since 2nd patch, it seems a lot better. There are no longer any true gamebreakers in Fifa 09, and I don't think you can say that about PES.

It's going in the right direction.

@OP: You're spot on. Some of the cons can be fixed by patches/mods, such as the night and overcast lighting.

Yeah i also think the same but according to Mr. Paul and some forum gurus importing everything from nextgen is rather impossible. What i say is if EA think football game is what they make then make FIFA like CODs, MOHs and every next gen game out there for PCs even though if they have to make new engine.

Give us NEXT GEN.

That's right. All other games released look (and in many cases, play) better on PC. Only Fifa 09 has to be different. I mean, it's a sports game for God's sake, there are other far more complex games out there, like the Total War series, and that runs on PC. How does it run on consoles.....hold on a minute, silly me!!!! It isn't out on consoles. Why? Because they couldn't handle it, nothing to do with no mouse, etc. You can buy them for consoles now.

1) At the moment i am having no problems with this at all.
2) Yes; i totally agree, there aren't enough tricks in the game whereas nextgen has loads!
3)Maybe.
4)YES YES YES. The crowds are terrible at the moment and something needs to be done about it.

Definitely. COD has amazing graphics and so why can't fifa do this?
Fair enough some of the scenes in fifa are pretty good but not all of it.

@07patty: Check this out:

[aCap] New Crowd and Old trafford!! - Soccer Gaming Forums

It's only for Man Utd (so far), but it makes a massive difference in game. Now, the crowd don't look like the alien crowd from 'Attack of the Clones'.

EA really need to do something about the crowds. In a few stadiums they need to do nothing .. in other stadiums i'd prefer not to have a crowd because it looks so rubbish.
