I'm fairly new to football games, having only played FIFA 06 before this one's demo, and whilst I do enjoy a lot of this this has to be the most frustrating game I've ever played. I realise the full game's been released but some c&c never hurts.
Some of this frustration stems from a lack of practice, some of this frustration from the way I play - my playing style is sort of like Barcelona: 4-3-3, keeping lots of possession, probing the penalty area, playing down or back into the centre often, vulnerable when they break on me. But playing this way renders my 3 forwards useless as they're constantly offsides. I've been playing with Milan and Madrid in the demo, but most of my goals are coming from midfielders and fullbacks. It's not uncommon for me to get 5-6 offsides against me in a 2 min half, as my forward just can't stay behind that line. I try to counter this by asking my players to make a run back into an onside position, but they're fairly casual about this - taking their time and getting me tackled before I can make the pass. Which is not to say I haven't clicked to pass - my player just waits long enough before passing to be tackled. Or he's unable to just get the ball past a lone defender in time. If the ball is passed as soon as the mouse button is released, then this won't be an issues I'm sure. I also find it annoying that many of my passes are fairly high even though I just tap the mouse, and that my strikes either hug the ground or fly into the top stands. Why no in-betweens? Ideally I'd want my passes either low or high and more control over my shots. These annoying high passes seems to make the ball travel slower and allow for easier interceptions from the other team. Speaking of interceptions, why is it that my own players have the uncanny ability to run into passes intended for other players? To make things worse, they don't get the ball, they just fumble it, hand over possession and unwittingly set a lone striker clean through on goal. I've don't recall ever seeing this specifically in a football game. They're also able to run into each other and spill the ball - probably due to a bad AI understanding of the formation. My players also have the annoying habit of turning around as soon as they receive a pass - in front of my goal they get tackled and my opponent grabs a lucky goal, and in front of their goal they get robbed of a goal on a silver platter. No fun at all. Opposition AI aren't terribly smart either: monotonous attacks, scoring only on the break, and some really weird keeper behaviour: for instance, I'll be running with a right-back along the goal line trying to get into their box. As I approach the goal the keeper suddenly comes at my player, even though my shooting angle is about 3 degrees and I'm obviously looking for a cross. Just a quick lob over are a step inside and a shot to the far post and the deal is done. Awful and persistent mistake. They also too frequently try to play the ball out of their penalty area in sticky situations - allowing me to quickly intercept and counter attack. edit: I also have to mention that it seems the issue with players running along a track when receiving a pass hasn't been fixed - my players still stand around motionless, refusing my commands, just to have a player from the other team rush in and make a ridiculous interception. With all that said, I do think the game is doing some good things. Better dynamics to team movement, better play dynamic. The mouse and keyboard setup is also really great though I need some practice. I do like the menus but I really want the in-game menu to appear instantly and regardless of what's happening in the game, i.e. cutscenes disallow any user input. A frustrating game is not made less so by forcing the player to wait before quitting. Other cool things are the widgets and some improvement on the production values. /rant Last edited by BrendanMN; 04-10-2008 at 04:34 PM.. |

My comments on the full game
What i liked : -Really like the collision (But f**k its annoying when two of your players you arent controlling randomly decide to collide and thus leave the cpu with 2 free players) -Adidas Live System -Graphics are on the right track. -Menus What I dislike: -Defending. Defenders are all over the place, especially on World Class. They dont pick up men at all, cant follow runs, cant do jack all a lot of the time. The amount of goals Ive conceded because my defenders are simply useless is ridiculous. - Make it so when a cpu player gets tackled (Standing tackle) they cant miraculously recover almost every time to beat the defender to the ball. It drives me mad! -Fatigue is just overkill to say the least. Especially in manager mode, takes players far too long between matches to recover. (Ie I have given one player 3 matches off in a row and he still is very fatigued and Im only 10 games into the season) - Fix up the 1st touch. Just bounces off your players and you have little if any control of it. - Crowd sucks - Still very few actual grounds overall. How about spending the time one year to get a lot of licences and produce the game with a lot more stadiums (Ie how about some of the other grounds in the Prem League, COMS would be a nice start!) -Goalkeepers suck! |

I am very disapointed with fifa, where i in fifa always had games like 0-0, 0-1, 1-0, 1-1 it is now always like 6-5, 7-2, 5-0, 7-8. not only offline, but also online.
IE forgot some importend thing, They forgot the defending, somethimes the players just walk across the players, and do nothing. They also forgot the keeper, it is much to easy to score, when you have no defender close to you, and you shot, it's goal, the keeper is nothing. And the most anoying things are the long shots, now they alsmoste go all time in to the nets, not realistic, i think in real live only 10% go in. I hope the gameplay of fifa 2010 will be like it was on fifa08 or maybe like it was in fifa06 (there the long shots where fair) conclusion, fifa09 is like chooting game, just press the D, and you will score. For me fifa 09 will score 40/100, where i gave fifa08 WC a score of 78/100 EA lost the way to succes. greetings |

You need legendary mode/keepers, try scoring all the time then! Check out this thread for what you need to make the game lots of fun (offline, that is). Online is...well, you know.
Must have patches/mods for Fifa 09

I've got really impressed by the animation in FIFA09. Collisions, passes, movements, everything gives you a sense of watching a real football match. But when it comes to shot mechanism, I get frustrated. I play against people who can't make a complete and organized attack but when they reach out of the box with the ball they shoot and have a 90% chance of success to score. In my point of view, most users still prefer PES because they don't want such a level of "difficulty", although it has not improved since PES6 version. About the online, I can't understand why so many people are disappointed. Except for a few games with spikes, most of them have no problems. If you have experienced PES08 online mode, FIFA09 online looks like paradise to me... |

Hi,
I've downloaded and installed the fifa 09 pc demo, checking my cpu has all the system requirements (it has), only to find I'm restricted to playing scarecrow football. All the players (and referee) are in a crucifix like position with no emotions. Why is this and how can I fix it? |

NVIDIA Geforce FX 5900. I got that around 4 years ago so especially with this huge jump in graphics that could be the reason, but I really don't want to go out and buy a new card. Mind you, better than 12 months with the wii version...

[QUOTE=paul4chelsea;6026606]don't take it hard..which is best fifa09 or PES 09?????????????/[/QUOTE
You have to try it for yourself, really. I played PES for many years (after switching from Fifa '04, I found that PES gameplay was far more enjoyable), but I got bored with the Master League (same every year) and only having six leagues to choose from. Now, after all the fixes have been applied, I think Fifa 09 is a better game in all areas other than the heading physics which still need a lot of work. However, online is 100% FUBAR. Edit: Fifa 09 out of the box is far too easy, you need Legendary mode to get a good challenge. If you don't like having to use mods/fixes, then PES 09 is your man, otherwise I'd go for Fifa 09.

Well, after playing the full game I feel I have to revise my initial assessment. FIFA 09 has to be one of the worst games I've ever played. As I mentioned, I played FIFA 06 for a while, and what I see here does simply not constitute three years of iterative work on a franchise. Paul Hossack, sir, you've come close to engineering an abortion. I can't remember that I've ever been this frustrated with anything...
Installing those patches makes it better for sure, but simply not good enough - especially not when looking at what's happening on the consoles. If the AI could be fixed this poor excuse for the beautiful game of soccer might still be rescued. Until then I'll just be kicking around tennis balls for the dumber of my two dogs. At least she doesn't run into other people when chasing the ball. |
