LYON WIN TROPHEE DES CHAMPIONS IN THRILLER

JUNINHO CELEBRATES HIS 6TH MINUTE GOAL WITH THE LYON BENCH.

Lille 2-2 Lyon
Juninho 6'
Cabaye 55'
Gomis 67'
Obraniak 76'

Lyon opened their season with a tie with Lillie, for the Trophee des Champions. It sees Lyon boss Claude Puel face his former club, and he gives debuts to Lisandro Lopez, Michel Bastos and Bafetimbi Gomis, but Aly Cissokho only makes the bench.

Early tactics showed that Puel liked to play down the wings with pacey players Delgado and Bastos, but the opening goal was all centre-revolved. 6 minutes into the match, Juninho was controlling possession in the middle of the park. He strided forward, with no men challenging him, and he played a neat 1-2 with Lisandro Lopez, beat Mavuba, and smashed the ball into the top corner, past Malicki in goal.

Despite the brilliant start Lyon made, it turned sour on 16 minutes, Mavuba went through on goal, after Obraniak played him through, but Fabio Grosso intervened, bodychecking Mavuba to the ground. The Italian was given his marching orders, and deservedly so. Lyon were down to 10 men, and had an extrodanary challenge to beat Lille with one less man. Aly Cissokho made his debut, replacing Jerémy Toulalan.

Lloris perhaps made the save of the match from the resulting free-kick. Obraniak curled the free-kick over the wall, it dipped and curled, but Lloris dived across the goalmouth, and palmed it away from goal. Quite possibly a contender for save of the season already, as the French 'keeper was congratulated by his team-mates.

Just before half-time, Lisandro Lopez, the new multi-million euro signing from FC Porto, was kept out by the Lille 'keeper with a fantastic stop. The Argentinian was in acres of space to shoot, and when he did, Malicka tipped it away from the bottom corner, and put it behind for a corner. Nothing resulted from it, however, and Lyon were ahead at the interval.

In the second half, Lyon started defending slackly, and it made them pay 10 minutes in. Cissokho cleared the cross from Obraniak, but Balmont got into the box, and squared the ball for Yohan Cabaye, who easily tucked it away past Lloris. It was 1-1 now, and it was anyone's game for the taking.

Lyon restored their lead though on 67 minutes, and it was another new signing who netted. Cesar Delgado played Bafetimbi Gomis down the right flank, and he outran Adil Rama for a whole 40 yards, finishing the move off with a side-footed shot into the corner of the net. It was a brilliant solo effort by Gomis, who wasn't taking any prisoners there, he simply had to score, and he delivered.

Needless to say though, Lille were always going to fight back, and 14 minutes from the end, their dominant winger, Obraniak struck. A poor throw by Lloris was headed back towards goal by Mavuba, Obraniak took on the centre-back, Cris, and smashed the ball into the roof of the net. It was a breathtaking goal by the skillful winger, who was the star of the show today, always being in the right place, at the right time. It was 2-2 at the final whistle, and the game went straight to penalties. Here are how the events unfolded in the penalty shootout.

----------------------

Lille: Frau - GOAL! Straight into the bottom corner from the French striker, sending Lloris the wrong way.
Lyon: Bastos - GOAL! Powered straight into the top corner.
Lille: Obraniak - MISS! The winger who had a fine 90 minutes, skies his penalty into the stands.
Lyon: Delgado - GOAL! Malicki goes the right way, but is unable to stop the penalty from Delgado. 2-1 to Lyon.
Lille: Debuchy - MISS! A shocking penalty from the right-back, as he weakly strikes it to the right of Lloris, who easily saves it.
Lyon: Gomis - GOAL! The forward calmly slots the ball in the bottom corner. Lyon surely have this in the bag now, 3-1.
Lille: Rami - MISS! a shocking miss by the defender, and that miss proved costly, as Lyon are the new holders of the Trophee des Champions!

----------------------

So, Lyon walked away with the trophy, after a short penalty shootout. The team looks in good shape for the season, but their is also some news out of the Stade de Gerland tonight, concerning transfers. 3 players have left Lyon to join other clubs. Midfielder Fabio Santos has joined Caen for Ł1,100,000, Sidney Govou has moved to Le Havre for a hefty fee of Ł7,700,000, and the final move is Anthony Revelliere to Strasbourg for Ł1,700,000. We wish all these players the best at their new clubs, and for the future.

LYON HELD TO DRAW BY MINNOWS LORIENT

JUNINHO CURLS IN THE OPENING GOAL.

Lorient 1-1 Lyon
Juninho 17'
Vahirua 28'

It was practically the same team starting for Lyon as they did against Lille, with just one change, Aly Cissokho was in for the suspended Fabian Grosso. Lyon go 4-3-3 for this away tie with Lorient, in the first league game of the season. Claude Puel is expecting big things of his players this season, and the Ligue 1 trophy is expected to come home to the Stade de Gerland this season.

The game started slowly for Lyon, but as expected, they eventually took the lead, on 17 minutes, through their main man in midfield. A corner was nodded around the box by Lorient defenders, and Gomis nodded the ball down to Juninho. He took on Marchal, and curled the ball into the top corner, 6 yeards out from goal. 1-0 to the French giants, and surely Lorient were going to be on the back-foot form now on, and for the rest of the game.

Lyon could of had a second goal just a few minutes after breaking the deadlock. Lorient defender Genton made a stupid error in trying to pass the ball back towards 'keeper Audard, and Gomis intervened. He tried to dink the ball over Audard, but he saved it well, and Jerémy Toulalan skied the rebound. These signs were good for Lyon, but not for the home support, who were going to slaughter the players if they carried on performing sloppily.

It was Lyon though who made the worst error of the match, leading to an equaliser. Morel played a ball over the top, but Boumsong reached it before Gameiro. He tried to hook the ball over his shoulder, but he ended up kicking it towards his own goal. Lloris and Cris collided in the six yard box, and Vahirua smashed the ball into the empty Lyon goal. A disasterous error by the 'keeper/defensive duo, and they needed to move on from that mistake, and grab a win for their team.

And Lorient could of been ahead before half time. Their was a goalmouth scramble in the six yard area, and the ball fell to Gameiro. His shot was saved by Lloris, and the rebound by Le Pen hit the post. The ball bounced back to Le Pen, and he converted from a tight angle. The linesman spotted something though, and called for offside from Le Pen's initial effort. Lorient were clearly furious by this decision, and they had a chance to drain off that anger during half time, in which it was 1-1 between the two sides.

The beginning of the second half was all Lyon. They were attacking frequently, and Lisandro Lopez almost smashed the ball into the back of the net, but the ball curled wide in a split second from going in. Gomis should of headed Lyon into the lead following a Delgado cross, but his header from just six yards out landed on the roof of the net.

And it was Lyon fans who went home more frustrated. Thier side drew 1-1 with a side predircted to be relegated this season. It must of been embarrasing, as their stars like Juninho, Gomis and Lopez failed to beat the minnows of Lorient. Maybe in their next game, Lyon will pick up a win, and they should do with the calibre of players they have in their squad.
