History
NASL

The Timbers were formed in 1974 and played their first season in the NASL in 1975. They lost in the Championship game 2-0 to Tampa Bay. portland became known as Soccer City USA during the season because of the fantastic support they recieved with a average attendance of 14,503. The Timbers did not enjoy the same success in their second season finishing 8-16 and mssing out on the playoffs.The 77' season saw them finish 4th in their confrence and miss the playoffs the second consecutive year. The 78' season saw them bow out of the playoffs at the semifinal stage to the New York Cosmos who had the help of several superstars such as Carlos Alberto and Franz Beckenbaur. The 1981 season saw the Portland Timbers reach the Playoffs for a final time and first time since 78'. They were eliminated by San Diego as Chicago won the chapionship. The NASL folded in 1982.

FC Portland

FC Portland was founded in 1985 as an amaetuer club that competed in the Round Robin competition with F.C. Seattle, San Jose, and the Victoria Riptide. A year later the newly formed F.C. Portland joined the newly formed WSA. The Timbers first year in 1986 was okay as they finished 6-6-2. THe 87' and 88' years were much worse as Portland finished Bottom both years. In 88' with a 1-12 record. The 89' season finshed with them losing out on the playoffs via goal diffrence. The last year in 90' saw them finish 10-10. Over the time of F.C. Portland they had some famous names play for them such as Kasey Keller, Billy Crook, Joey Leonetti, and Scott Bendetti who all earned caps for the U.S.

Portland Timbers USL

The Timbers were back in 2001 qualyfing for the playoffs 2 out of the first 3 seasons. The Portland Timbers made it to the Quarterfinals of the 2005 playoffs but were knocked out by fierce rivals Seattle. 2008 remains the worse year in the USL franchise of the portland Timbers tying for last place on just 27 points.
The next year was a outstanding year for Portland winning all their friendlies against International competition that included Preston North End, Club Nexaca, Toronto FC, and AC Milan Primaveras'(on PK's) They finshed 2nd and lost in the playoff semifinals. The 2008 year wll be remebered as one of the most disappionting as the Timbers finished last on 31 points. They were holding down the last playoff spot until late in the season where they fell apart and lost several games in a row and that put them in last place. After that season Do Garber announced the Expansion team that will be in Portland for the 2011 season.

The Portland Timbers got the call after several catastrophic things happened in MLS. Seattle and FC Dallas went Bankrupt forcing them to pull out of the league. The Philidelphia Union decided to pull out after not being able to use a adaquate stadium as they did not have the funds to continue to build Chester Stadium. It was announced that the coaching staff and Players will remain the same.

Portland Timbers Coming To MLS!

Today Don Garber announced the replacement team for Seattle and FC Dallas. He declared the Philadelphia Union unfit last week after they had no stadium to play in and this week he named Merritt Paulsen's Timbers as the replacing team. He said it wasn't hard as they have very good fan support and are due to be coming in 2 more years. The Timbers MLS franchise has decided to keep the same coaching staff and Players for the upcoming Inagural Season in 2009. Merritt Paulsen said" I Have plans to make PGE a soccer specific stadium after moving the Portland Beavers to a new Ball Park on the outskirts of town in Beaverton. The Timbers will get all the facilities to themselves now that the Beavers are gone.

MLS Announce League Style Change.

Details for 2009 Season
No more College Draft. Teams will scout there own players.

League will merge into 1 table with top 8 teams getting into the playoffs.

There will be Regional Cups played outside the league.(Tourney mode)

The U.S. Open Cup has become only open for MLS teams. USL teams are excluded.

No more Salary Cap or Developmental contracts.

Timbers Announce They will take 3 U-23 Players With Them to MLS

The portland Timbers have announced the 3 players expected to travel with the team up to MLS.
The club announced that Jordan Craaslineck, Ryan Youngblood and Patrick McLain.

Jordan Craaslineck was a high profile player thst was expected to play for the senior team but tinstead they signed him to a PDL contract.

Ryan Younblood was searching for a team before The Timbers U-23s gave him a chance to shine last year where he earned all confrence striker.

Patrick McLain was the PDL Keeper for the last 2 ggames of the season. He was added to give depth to the Keeper's spot on the Roster. He will sit 3rd on the depth chart behind Steve Cronin and Brian Visser.
