UEFA Champions League Group Stage Draw Michel Platini has stuck to his promise and the UEFA Champions League is now set to return to action for the 2009/10 season. At an official meeting, Platini announced the return of Europe’s most prestigious club competition, and also launched the draw for this season’s tournament.![]() ''On behalf of everyone at UEFA, I am delighted to announce that the 2009/10 UEFA Champions League will take place as promised. Everyone is looking forward to seeing Europe’s top footballers in action and that will indeed happen.'' Platini told representatives at the meeting. After his speech, UEFA president, Platini, drew the groups for the group stages of the competition. There was much anticipation around the World as clubs and supporters waited to see who they would face in the 2009/10 group stages. As Platini drew the groups, there were some notable fixtures such as Roma were drawn in the same group as Liverpool. Meanwhile, Juventus and Lyon were both drawn into Group A. Internazionale were drawn in Group F alongside Sporting Lisbon, Deportivo La Coruna and Ajax. Although none of the other teams are recognised as World class clubs, it will still be a tough group for Nerazzurri, as they will need to avoid complacency if they are to advance as group winners. Ajax and Sporting will bring back memories for certain Inter players. Joao Moutinho, a new signing for Internazionale, will return to Portugal to face his former club, while Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Cristian Chivu and Maxwell, who all spent time at Ajax prior to arriving at Stadio Giuseppe Meazza. ''It’s definitely going to be a tricky group, for sure.'', Inter assistant manager, Giuseppe Baresi told Sky Italia, after the draw. ''Ajax, Sporting and Deportivo are all very tough teams to beat but we have top quality players at Internazionale so I’m quite confident we can progress.'' According to the fixture list, Inter will play host to Deportivo on match day 1. The Nerazzurri will then travel to Sporting and Ajax. Match day 4 will see Mourinho’s side take on Ajax at Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, before going to Deportivo and finally returning to Italy to face Sporting Lisbon in the final group match. Group F 1. Sporting Lisbon 2. Deportivo La Coruna 3. Ajax 4. Internazionale |

![]() ![]() In a transfer deal worth approximately £2.3 million, Internazionale centre-back Nelson Rivas has joined La Liga outfit, Espanyol. The Colombian defender agreed personal terms with his new club, and the transfer was officially confirmed by both clubs earlier today. ''This is a new beginning for me. Joining Espanyol is a great choice for me because I wasn't getting much regular first team football at Inter and when my new club came bidding for me, I negotiated terms with them very easily and quickly.'' Rivas commented. Mourinho is believed to be trimming the squad size at Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, with Nelson Rivas being the first player to be shown the door this summer. The funds generated by Rivas' sale are believed to be given to the Internazionale head coach for him to spend on another player. ------------------------------ Dacourt Leaves For Sunderland ![]() The second player to leave Stadio Giuseppe Meazza this summer transfer window is Olivier Dacourt, who spent the latter half of last season on loan at Fulham. It has been confirmed by Internazionale that Dacourt has now joined Sunderland in a deal worth just over £500,000. Dacourt was told by Internazionale manager, José Mourinho, that he would be playing a small role in the club's forthcoming season. This news prompted the midfielder to search for a new club and, this morning, Olivier Dacourt was unveiled to the media at a brief press conference at Sunderland. ''I am happy to be joining up with Sunderland and I hope to raise the standard here.'' Dacourt said to the media. ''I wasn't getting the amount of matches I'd liked at Internazionale so a move to Sunderland seems a good deal for me and my former club.'' Internazionale wish both player all the best in their footballing careers. The departure of Rivas and Dacourt could mean José Mourinho is ready to spend more money in the transfer market but the Portuguese boss will only do so if he feels the need to expand the squad. |
