Gianfranco Zola (born 5th July 1966 in Oliena, Sardinia) is probably most noticeably famed for his successful career as Striker at Chelsea Football Club where he was voted "Football Writers' Player of The Year" in 1997 and Chelsea's Greatest Ever Player in 2004. Zola was also awarded an OBE - Honarary Member of the Order of the British Empire in a special ceremony in Rome.

In 2003 Zola joined Cagliari (the biggest club in native Sardinia) for the last run of his professional footballing career. He consequently led them to Serie A success and ended his footballing career with a double against Italian giants Juventus in June 2005.

On September 8th 2008 Gianfranco Zola agreed to manage West Ham United Football Club and signed a three year contract with the club. After taking West Ham to 9th place in the Premier Leauge in the 08/09 season, and only 2 points from qualifying for European Football for the coming season; in April 2009 Gianfranco Zola signed a contract that will keep him at West Ham until 2013. Zola's career at West Ham seems set to be a successful and fruitful management regime which may propell West Ham United into the forefront of successful English football teams.

Hammers Set to Iron out Squad
Gianfranco Zola on hunt for new talent as big names and ageing strikers are set to leave West Ham United FC.

With the departure of former West Ham United captain Lucas Neill imminent, Gianfranco Zola is intent to cut the rankings of his squad and bring in some new names. Ageing strikers David Di Michele and Diego Tristán are first on Zola's list. "I have a lot of respect for these men, Michele came in at a crucial point for us and put in a decent performance, however we feel it's necessary to introduce some younger talent to the club in order for us to progress and reach our goal of European football."

When questioned on who he was targetting Zola's main interests were aimed towards Chilean international Luis Antonio Jimenez (Inter Milan) and co-partner; Brazilian forward Amantino Mancini (Inter Milan). "I have had my eye on these players for a very long time, we need a strong playmaker and Jimenez has proven he is more than capable of that at Internazionale.

Mancini would be an ideal replacement for Di Michele, he is fast, dynamic and a wonderful player to watch, he is well respected at Internazionale as a Striker and would prove extremely beneficial for West Ham United's current forwards to learn from and gel with," Zola explained. It is understood that Liverpool FC are also in talks with Mancini but Zola appears adamant on adding the Inter partnership to his squad. Rumours are circulating and various names coming into question in regards to who will replace defender Lucas Neill at West Ham, Rod Fanni (Stade Rennais FC) and Matthew Bates (Middlesborough FC) looking like the most probable options.
