Barca target Fabregas 19th July 2008 ![]() An unknown Barcelona source has revealed that Arsenal captain Francesc Fabregas is being lined up as the next signing for the Catalan club. Fabregas, 21, was a product of Barcelona’s cantera youth system, before leaving to join Premier League team Arsenal at the age of 16. He has since progressed into a world class midfielder, captained the Arsenal team, and established himself in the Spain national team. And the Barcelona source revealed that Fabregas would be Barcelona’s big summer arrival, “He is a very good player, and we have targeted him as our major arrival to the club, he is a talented player, and we feel he would be perfect for the side, and want to bring him to the Nou Camp.” The stumbling block for any deal could be Arsenal’s reluctance to sell, with Arsene Wenger possibly looking for over €25 million for the midfielder. “As a club, we would prefer not to spend a lot of money on just one player, and Pep (Guardiola) thinks that we need to strengthen the team, rather than just spending money on big names.” There has been no word officially from Barcelona, Arsenal or Fabregas, who has revealed in the past that he would consider a move to the Nou Camp. |

Guardiola: No interest in Fabregas 20th July 2008 ![]() Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola has denied that Barcelona have interest in Arsenal midfielder Francesc Fabregas. The Spanish star has spoken in the past about playing for Barcelona, and a Barcelona source revealed that the club were interested in bringing him to the Nou Camp. However, Guardiola told press today that there will be no move for Fabregas, “He is definitely a fantastic player, but Cesc is not our player, and we think that he is not right for us, as we have a strong midfield already. We are interested in David Silva, and we are hoping that he will be our main signing this summer, but we are not going to try and bring Fabregas to the club.” Silva himself was speaking about a move to Barca, and expressed his delight at being linked with the club. “I would love to play for Barcelona, but I am a Valencia player and unless the club want to sell, or agree to sell, then I will be staying at the Mestalla. I would like to play for Barcelona at some point in my career, but if Valencia does decide to sell me, I have offers from Liverpool, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid too, so I will have to think about my future, as it is not certain. I am thrilled to be linked with these clubs, as it means that I am doing something good on the pitch.” The interest in David Silva has been met in a positive manor with the Barca fans, and with the club also being linked with young Spanish goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo, they are looking forward to the club having more Spanish players to choose from. However, Francisco Ochoa is also rumoured to be on Guardiola’s shortlist, as it appears that he has lost confidence in current number 1 Victor Valdes. “Victor is a great goalkeeper, but we are looking to bring in another, to build up more competition in that area of the field.” |

Great start I will be sure to keep up with this.
Just a thought for RB have you looked at a French player called Michael Chretien from AS Nancy, he was fantastic for my Athletico Madrid private MM. Another great player was a LB who played for Toulousse called Jeremy Mathieu. (IRL Valencia have just signed him). Link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J%C3%A9r%C3%A9my_Mathieu Just a thought

Barca withdraw from Champions League 22nd July ![]() Barcelona has announced that the club has withdrawn from the 2008/09 Champions League, after UEFA President Michel Platini told the club that manager Pep Guardiola could not manage in UEFA competition. By Spanish FA rules, Guardiola has the correct coaching qualifications to lead the club domestically, but UEFA guidelines don not allow him too. This would have left the club without Guardiola in UEFA competition until he managed to reach the required coaching qualifications which could take him until March. The Barcelona board decided that it would be better for the club for them to withdraw, rather than see the team led without their manager. Club President Joan Laporta said, “He is an integral part of the club, and it would not be right to see the team lead out by him in domestic competition, but when it comes to Europe we would be without him. That does not make sense to me, but we have to accept that, and we have decided not to play in the Champions League for this season.” Laporta was speaking from Valencia, where he and Guardiola are currently negotiating a deal to bring midfielder David Silva to the club. In other Barcelona news, goalkeeper Albert Jorquera has left the club, and joined Real Betis for €875,000. He has signed a three year contract with the La Liga club. |

Ustari flies into Barcelona 23rd July 2008 ![]() Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola has been looking for a new goalkeeper, and it looks like Oscar Ustari will be that man. Ustari, is currently the number 1 choice at Getafe was spotted arriving at the Nou Camp, with rumours that the Argentine will be the replacement for the apparent unfavoured Victor Valdes. Ustari has been fairly impressive for Getafe since he joined from Independiente, and has now attracted the attention of the Catalan Giants, as Guardiola seems to have lost confidence in the current Barce ‘keeper Valdes. Francisco Ochoa was expected to be the first target, but the Mexican has said his preferred choice would be Valencia. Guardiola, it seems has turned his attention to Ustari, and Getafe have confirmed that they have accepted a €9 million bid from Barcelona, and it looks like Ustari will join Fernando Llorente as a new signing at the Nou Camp. A deal for David Silva is also expected to be close, with Eidur Gudjohnsen revealing that he has accepted an offer from Valencia as part of the deal, just the transfer fee of Silva remains. Meanwhile, Barcelona have announced they will play New York Red Bulls on the 30th July, before playing LA Galaxy in the 4th August, as part of their pre-season tour to America. |
