MANCHESTER CITY SEASON REVIEW: 2008-09 SEASON
AUGUST ![]() [Robinho celebrates his goal vs Wigan] The month of August began with a massive clearout of the Manchester City youngsters, including Shaleum Logan and Adam Clayton, shifting them off to the lower leagues, while Logan got a move to Championship side Preston North End, fairly local to Manchester. This money was used to upgrade facilities within the club, as Mark Hughes brought in new coaches to train his players. The season started with a bang at the City of Manchester Stadium, as City strutted their stuff with a 2-0 win over Wigan Athletic, thanks to goals from Robinho and craig Bellamy. Stoke City were the next opponents for City, facing them at the Brittania Stadium. City held on for the win, after a first half goal by Shaun Wright-Phillips determined the final score. A week later, Middlesbrough travelled to Manchester to face City, but the game was pretty dull, ending up a score draw, at 1-1. Stewart downing's free kick cancelled out Robinho's penalty in the ifrst half, as both teams took a share of the spoils. The final game of City's August was against Liverpool, in Manchester. The game was sprung to life in the 2nd minute, as Dirk Kuyt scored, but Micah Richards eventually equalised in the Second Half for City, leaving Mark Hughes with a pleased smile on his face. He hoped September would be much easier. SEPTEMBER ![]() [Micah Richards scored as City held Chelsea to a 1-1 draw] September was an unbeaten month for Manchester City, and a pleasing month all round for the team. They didn't carve out big results, but they grinded out wins they equally deserved. The first match of the September month was against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, no tougher way to start the month. Craig Bellamy threw City into a shock lead on 13 minutes, but ex-City Striker Nicolas Anelka became the City party pooper with a stunning goal 22 minutes from the end of the game. Things breiflly lightened up in the Carling Cup 2nd round of that Tuesday weekday. Carlisle United visited the City of Manchester Stadium, and almost carved out a shock result, but coty came out on top in the end, winning 3-2 against the Cumbrian side. Benjani and Vincent Kompany scored in the First Half, with Danny Graham equalising for Carlisle in between. Carlisle managed a 2nd equaliser in the Second Half through Michael Bridges, but Daniel Sturridge struck deep into Stoppage Time in the Second Half, as City progressed to the 3rd Round of the Carling Cup. After that big win, City followed it up with 3 Premier League wins in a row, with all the matches ending in a 1-0 scoreline. city beat Portmsouth 1-0 through a Pablo Zabaleta goal, and in Manchester, City also managed a 1-0 win over Fulham, as Benjani Mwaruwari scored a header from point blank range, and Shaun Wright-Phillips netted at the Stadium of Light for City as they took all 3 points over Sunderland. Overall, a stunning month for City, taking 10 points out of a possible 12, and finding themselves in 2nd spot in the table at the end of September, a point behind Blackburn Rovers. Even though it was still early on in the season, City fans believed they could win the Premier League this season. OCTOBER ![]() [City trounced Rovers at Ewood Park, as Robinho got all 4 goals for City] October looked like it was going to be a tough month, with Everton and Tottenham Hotspur to face. City saw off the evertonians easily, by a scoreline of 3-0, as Vincent Kompany, Wayne Bridge and Robinho got on the scoresheet. Tottenham were more of a task to deal with though, and they proved it with a 1-0 win at White Hart Lane, with David Bentley heading in an Aaron Lennon cross. City then got back to winning ways, in the 3rd round of the Carling Cup over Bristol City. Vincent Kompany was on target, and Craig Bellamy scored a brace in this one sided contest. City then played out a boring 0-0 draw with West Ham United, but shocked everyone with a big win over Blackburn Rovers at the end of the month. Morten Gamst Pedersen opened the scoring in just 9 minutes for Rovers, but City turned on an onslaught, led by Brazilian star Robinho. Robinho went on to double his tally for the season, scoring an incredible 4 GOALS past Paul Robinson, who looked a little bemused at the final whistle. City may not have played the prettiest games in October, but they have every right to be up there at this time, but they had a VERY tough start to the November campaign. NOVEMBER ![]() [City go 2-0 up at Old Trafford through Benjani] The big game at the start of Novermber was the Manchester Derby! Many people thought United and their superstars would come out on top, but it wasn't to be, as City were victorious, winning by 3 goals to 1. Benjani started the scoring off on just 3 minutes, and Stephen Ireland added a 2nd goal on 35 minutes. Anderson got a consolation goal for United in the Second Half, but it wasn't needed, as robinho grabbed a 3rd goal for City from a brilliant counter attack. Scenes of jubilous joy aroused over the Blue half of Manchester, while the Red half wasn't so pleased at their team. However, City;s joy was short-lived, as they were knocked out of the Carling cup at Round 4, as Niko Kranjcar scored in Extra Time to drive the nail through City's coffin. city then played a bore draw with West Bromwich Albion, before playing another no-score draw against Bolton Wanderers. The City strikers were misfiring, and nothing could be done to help the scoring crisis. Their defence seemed to worsen as well, as Newcastle United trod over them at St James' Park, as Martins, Owen and Nolan got the goals to dent City's hope of the title. The other team in the early race for the title, Aston Villa, faced them next, but City managed to repeat their famous 3-1 victory over United by the same scoreline here, and it was the same scorers as the United game, Ireland, Benjani and Robinho. The month of November ended on a high for Mark Hughes' men, but the rest of the month wasn't so good, yet City were still tying for 1st place with both Aston Villa and Liverpool, all on 33 points. It was beginning to tighten up at the top of the pack. DECEMBER ![]() [A late Cousin goal grabbed Hull a last gasp point] The start of December saw city travel to the Emirates Stadium to face Arsenal, an in-form team still in with a shot of winnng the title. City, however trampled on them that day, winning 3-1, a great scoreline for them that season. Bellamy, Zabaleta and sturridge all scored for City, Arshavin scored for Arsenal. Hull City were next to feel the scoring wrath of City, but not in a winning way, as Hull came from behind to sntach a late goal from Daniel Cousin. Alarm bells were ringing for City, and they needed to change something, and fast, but nothing happened. City's next opponents were Stoke City, and like so many others teams this season, they bowed down at City's feet, as City ran out 2-0 winners, thanks to goals from Vincent Kompany and Banjani Mwaruwari. The City team were getting very much back into shape, but Tottenham Hotspur wasn't an easy task for their next game. City ended the month of December on a high-note, as Spurs succumbed to the class of City, as Robinho and a Benjani brace sealed a 3-0 win in Manchester. JANUARY ![]() [Hamann left City to join Middlesbrough] Mark Hughes insisted in not buying anyone till the Summer, and said he would stick to his word and only sell players he didn't need, therefore, he placed Dietmar Hamann, Felipe Caicedo and Darius Vassell on the transfer list. There first match of January was against Middlesbrough, which was won very easily at the Riverside Stadium, as Robinho and Nigel de Jong got the goals in a 2-0 win. West Ham were next in the firing line for the Citizens, as forgotten Striker Valeri Bojinov got the winning goal 6 minutes from time in a 2-1 win at Upton Park. After the game, Mark Hughes announced Hamann had left the club to play for 1 more season beforer retiring, and he joined Middlesbrough. City then had to face Exeter City in the FA Cup 3rd Round, and Manchester City emerged victorious, as Wayne Bridge was one of the players on target. Chelsea were waiting in Manchester to face an in-form City team, but City crossed Chelsea's line at a bad moment, losing their force on the game, and Nicolas Anelka scored a stunning counter attack goal in the Second Half, forcing a 2-1 win in Chelsea's favour. Darius Vassell joined Portsmouth for £566,000, and Felipe Caicedo was taken off the transfer list. City's last league game in January was against Portsmouth at Fratton Park, and Robinho hit the back of the net in the 86th minute, providing ecstacy around the ground. There was one more match to be played in January, in the FA Cup 4th Round, where City hosted Fulham. City sailed through, beating the London based side 4-0, as Nigel de Jong scored 2 goals in this riot. City progressed into Round 5, and they were also at the top of the Premier League table, with Newcastle just a point behind. The race was on. FEBRUARY ![]() [Ireland scored a hat-trick as Everton crushed at Goodison] Coincidently, City played Fulham, who they played in their last game in the FA Cup. City won, but by a goal less by their last game. A Benjani brace and a stunning Robinho free kick got the win they most thouroughly deserved. City were now 2 points ahead of their nearest rivals, Newcastle, and went even further ahead with a -0 win over the "Magpies" rivals, Sunderland. FA Cup Round 5 day approached, and Portsmouth were the opposition. City coasted through to the Quarter-Finals, after a 2-0 win, thanks to goals from Robinho and Zabaleta. The month was capped off with a 4-1 win at Goodison Park over Everton, as the Toffees got chewed up by City, with Stephen Ireland scoring a hat-trick. Hughes rounded off the month with the Manager of the Month award, beating any other competitors by a long shot. March was sure to be a busy month. MARCH ![]() [Wright-Phillips got on the scoresheet as City did the double over United] March started with the 2nd Manchester derby of the season. It was held at Old Trafford, and all United fans had erased City's 3-1 win earlier in the season out of their head. However, United just didn't turn up, and at the end of the match, their players were booed off, as City did the double over them, thanks to goals from Shaun Wright-Phillips and Stephen Ireland. Chelsea followed in the FA Cup Quarter-Finals, and City hoped their nemisis, Nicolas Anelka wouldn't score against them, just this one game. It was ineveitable though, as City crahsed out by a 2-0 scoreline, as Ballack and Anelka got the goals. They got back to winning ways a week later with a 2-1 win over West Brom, with Robinho scoring 2 goals for the Citizens. A Greater Manchester derby was in store here as Bolton took on Man City, and it ended up at 1-1, as Shaun Wright-Phillips cancelled out an earlier Bolton goal by Johan Elmander. City were now 4 points clear of nearest rival Newcastle, but it could even go up till the final day till we have descovered the winner. APRIL ![]() [Bendtner and Kompany battle for the ball] The big game approached at the beginning of April. It was 1st vs 2nd, Man City vs Newcastle Utd, and the Geordies came out on top, cutting the gap down to just one point. Michael Owen got the goal on 11 minutes, leaving City anxious about their position in the table. Another title challenger, Aston Villa, were next to face Man City. Nothing but a win would send City back to the top of the table, and they did it the hard way, after a lone goal from Benjani settled the outcome. City had 3 games in hand on Newcastle now, and City stayed at the top of the table with a 3-0 win over Arsenal, as Petrov, Robinho and Ireland scored the goals. Wigan Athletic were the final opponents of the Citiznes in April, and City took one of their games in hand with a stroming 3-0 win at the JJB Stadium. Still with 2 games in hand over Newcastle, City stood proudly at the top of the Barclays Premier League, nothing would stand in their way. MAY ![]() [City players are dejected as Newcastle win the title on goal difference] And so came the final 3 fixtures of the season, Liverpool, Blackburn Rovers and Hull City. The Liverpool-City game was a bore 0-0 draw at Anfield. Next game was against Blackburn, but they so narrowly lost 1-0 over the Lancashire side thanks to a Roque Santa Cruz goal. It was now game on for the title. If Newcastle won and City lost, Newcastle would win the title on goal difference. That....is exactly what happened. Newcastle beat Wigan 3-1, and City could only watch in dissaray as they went down by 2 goals to 1 at the KC Stadium, meaning they were condemded to 2nd place, a tough task seen as they were in 1st place for a long way of the season. The result was hard to take, but the fact they lost out on goal difference said it all. Roll on the 2009-10 season. Last edited by PNE-Adz; 13-06-2009 at 12:03 PM.. |
