Bio -

Gianfranco Zola is more widely known for his playing career then his short managerial career. Zola started his professional career at Italian Serie C2 side Nourese where he spent two before moving to fellow Serie C2 side Torres. After three years at Torres Zola was signed by top Serie A side Napoli where he played alongside the legendary Diego Maradona. Zola won two league titles with Napoli scoring 31 goals in 4 years before signing for Serie A side Parma. Zola won a UEFA Cup and a UEFA Super Cup with Parma and also finished runner up in Serie A. Then manager Carlo Ancelotti couldn't fit Zola into his style of play and he was often played out of position, ultimately making him available for transfer. In November 1996 EPL side Chelsea paid £4.5m for the striker’s services. Zola spent 7 years at Chelsea and quickly became a fan favourite. He made 229 appearances scoring 59 goals for Chelsea in his time there. He was voted Chelsea's player of the year in 1997 and 2003, he was Chelsea's top scorer in 1999 and 2003 and he also won the FWA Footballer of the Year in 1997. Along with that Zola won the FA Cup twice, FA Charity Shield, The Coca Cola Cup, the UEFA Cup and the UEFA Super Cup. After news of an impending takeover at StamfordBridge, Zola left to return to Italy with then Serie B side Cagliari. He guided the club to promotion to Serie A and signed a contract for one more year at the club. He then helped the club to runners up in Serie A, he scored a brace in his final professional match against Juve before announcing his retirement in June 2005. Zola played over 600 games and scored over 150 goals in his playing career, many believe him to be the best ever Chelsea player, a legend. in 2006 Zola started his managerial career as assistant coach for the Italian U21 side, Pierluigi Casiraghi, his former Chelsea teammate, was the head coach. The duo lead the side to the 2008 Beijing Olympics where they reached the quarter finals before eventually losing out to Belgium. In September 2008 Zola signed a 3 year contract to manage EPL side West Ham United after former manager Alan Curbishely resigned due to differences with the board. Zola, despite not having the required UEFA A coaching license, was unveiled as manager of West Ham United on September 11th 2008.
