Default Tutorial: Players In A Different Shirt - Manager Mode

Hello everyone and thanks for clicking on this Tutorial that will provide an insight into how to make a Player in a different shirt (also known as a PIADS), this will show an example which is Valencia star David Villa being transformed into a Liverpool player kicking it out against Preston North End in the FA Cup. For those who know how to make these then i would love to hear your tips so I too can improve with PIADS.

David Villa is a player that is amazing and real quality. He is also a player linked to the equally great team Liverpool. In this tutorial I will be turning David Villa into a full fleged Liverpool player, complete with action shot and signature. Hopefully this will teach you something about PIADS.

Finding a Picture:
This is the most important part of making a good PIADS. There are several criteria that one must adhere to if he wants to make a realistic player.
  • Size of Picture [Small pictures will not have good pixel dimensions and makes it harder to use for a PIADS.
  • Body Player. Making Ryan Babel in a Real Madrid shirt is pointless if you choose to put his head on Arjen Robben.
  • Facial Expression. Hardly realistic to add a celebrating Macheda head onto a solemn James Beattie. It looks stupid.
  • Jersey. No matter how good the image is, it will be silly if the kit is from 1999 instead of 2009.
  • Background. It's so much easier when the background is blurred crowd, when it's something important it becames way harder.
Well anyway once you have the pictures you're set to go. Mine were:
David Villa
Fernando Torres

Now open up Photoshop or whatever you're planning on using [I'm on Photoshop CS4 Extended] and open the future head and body in two separate files. First off we'll be fixing up the body image, ready for the head that will be rendered soonish.

Set a feather of around 3 to 4 and with the Polygonal Lasso Tool go around the head, and once you [hopefully] reach the crowd part be less disciplined. When this has been selected, use the Patch Tool and simply move his head into the nice blurred crowd. As you can see above I did this quickly, and after the first patch, maybe a few more attempts could be done so none of the hair, etc can be found.

Now we're going to go into the David Villa image [head] and do a simple render job on his head. I use the Polygonal Lasso Tool for everything so unless you don't have this option or use something else, it's the way to go. Maybe also add on a LIGHT feather of 1 for this render. Slowly go around the head and try to get as much of the neck as possible. Once this is done simply cut and paste into the same document.

If you want the render of his head it can be found here:
His super duper render head

Now copy that layer from that image, and paste into the body image [Torres]. This is either the best or the worst part, depending on how well you selected the images. As this was a tutorial with any players I had endless choices, but some others can be harder.

Anyway get that image and place it on the body so that it looks good, however DON'T worry about certain problems like skin differences, there is one good solution...

Get the neck which as seen on the left side is... bad. Choose the Smudge Tool and smudge the HEAD's neck over the bad patch until it goes over the jersey. Make sure it does as we'll be able to fix that later.

Close off the head layer [eye on Photoshop] and go into the body layer. Now using any selection tool you want run it along the edge of the jersey, making sure you don't also cut off any heads/ears.

Now with that selection on, make the head layer reappear, select that layer and make the deletion. It should then look something like this....

Don't worry if it doesn't look totally realistic, when it's in a longer view out no one can tell the difference. So there you have it, done and dusted. The final image looked like this.

Some things that may look a little weird include the skin colour of the rest of the body. This can be easily fixed up by hue/saturation editting or even leaving it as is.

This can also make for some great signatures, such as this little one I just made to show off the PIADS which I think has gone well.

Thanks for reading this tutorial and please ask me any questions you have, for those who make these please also show any helpful hints and other information in making PIADS.

Finally there will also be a competition on this thread, and it will give you all the chance to make these. The rules will be released at a later date.

Also guys ripping will make me destroy you. Please ask me for use of these images and especially the signature

Cheers and thanks for reading
Hales.

also, adding a slight burn to the legs would help, as the legs of the player are lighter than the players face

My first attempt Marc Pugh in a Hereford United shirt.

I used Microsoft Paint.

This is why I am glad Brosque14 said he would make me some.
