Tottenham Hotspur A New Era Has Begun Check footnote at bottom please. ![]() Full name: Tottenham Hotspur Football Club Nicknames: Spurs, Lilywhites Founded in: 1882 known as Hotspur F.C. Ground: White Hart Lane with the capacity of 36,310 Chairman: Daniel Levy (English) Manager: Harry Redknapp (English) League: Premier League Last season finishing spot: 11th History: Founded inauspiciously under a North London streetlight by a group of local grammar school boys in 1882, Tottenham Hotspur have went on to build a worldwide reputation as one of European football's most romantic clubs in the 125 years since. Having moved to White Hart Lane in 1899 and not content with winning the Southern League in 1900, Tottenham Hotspur became the first and only non-league club to win the FA Cup in 1901 and again followed up a league win with an FA Cup victory twenty years later in 1921, only a year after winning the Second Division. It wasn't until 30 years later, under the fluid "Push and Run" style of manager Arthur Rowe, that Tottenham Hotspur finally announced their intentions in the grandest of styles by winning the Football League Championship for the first time. Rowe's successful modern style tactics were expertly executed by Spurs legends such as Ron Burgess, Len Duquemin and a man who would go down in Spurs folklore when he himself ascended to the manager's role in 1958, Bill Nicholson. Having joined the club as an apprentice in 1936, Bill Nicholson became it's most celebrated manager by guiding one of European football's greatest ever club sides to the domestic Double in 1960/61, another FA Cup win in 1962 and English football's first victory on European soil with the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1963, another FA Cup in 1967 and the early '70s brought two League Cups and the UEFA Cup in 1972 to complete Nicholson's legacy. Having marshalled Tottenham legends such as Greaves, Mackay, Blanchflower, Jones, White, Jennings, Mullery, Chivers, Peters and England to glory during his time, Bill Nicholson will always be regarded as Mr. Tottenham Hotspur. The late 1970s saw a decline arrested only by the ostentatious signings of Argentinean World Cup heroes Osier Audiles and Ricky Villa in 1978 and the emergence of midfield hero Glenn Hoddle and FA Cup wins in 1981 and 1982 and another UEFA Cup in 1984 saw a return to glory, glory days at White Hart Lane under Keith Burkinshaw. His departure led to a couple of "nearly" years under Peter Shreeves and David Pleat and it wasn't until 1991 that the FA Cup made it's way back to Tottenham. Financial problems and lack of success on the pitch beset the club during the 1990s but under the guidance of owners ENIC the club have finished fifth two seasons running in 2006 and 2007 and a brighter future now looks both possible and probable. Footnote: Opening post credit goes to my friend who is a Tottenham fan. He was more than happy to write some information for me.
