+AS Roma: A History ![]() __________________________________ +Early Years ![]() AS Roma fans Associazione Sportiva Roma first came into being in 1927. Italo Foschi merged three different clubs from the Italian capital Rome. Interestingly the reasoning behind this was Fascist dictator Benito Mussolini wanted to create a stronger club in the capital to rival the dominant football forces in the north of the country. Roma’s great city rivals Lazio were the only major club in the City that was not part of the merge, as they were very well established in their own right already. The Derby della Capitale (The Rome Derby) quickly became a much anticipated fixture and is considered to be the most hotly contested derby in Italy and one of the greatest worldwide. The club wear the official colours of the Eternal City. The gold represents God in Roman Catholicism, whilst the Maroon represents Imperial Dignity. The club logo portrays the female wolf with the two infant brothers Romulus and Remus, illustrating the myth of the creation of Rome, imposed on a bipartite golden yellow over maroon red shield. The first competitive game Roma took part in was in the 1928/29 season against Livorno, which ended with Roma winning 2-0. Roma made an impression in the Italian top flight early on, finishing as runners up in the 1930/31 season. Juventus went on to win the title that season. In this season, Rodolfo Volk set a record of twenty nine goals for Roma in a season. This record still stands today. ________________________________________ Good times and Bad (1930’s to 1970’s) ![]() Giamoco Losi set an appearance record which lasted for 38 years ![]() The scudetto winning side of the 1941/42 season Roma lost a number of their key players after the heights of the 1930/31 season and were forced to rebuild their squad. They were back in contention by the 1935/36 season and finished a single point behind that season’s champions Bologna. Roma struggled to finds any sort of consistency for the rest of the decade but in the 1941/42 season there was to be success. Football in Italy became disrupted at this time with World War 2 and Roma had to move grounds, but they were able to secure their first ever Scudetto. Roma couldn’t match the form that took them to the Scudetto in the seasons that followed, finishing consistently in the bottom half of Serie A. The worst possible fate came to pass in the 1950/51 season when Roma were relegated to the second tier of Italian football. The club were able to instantly bounce back into Serie A however and looked determined never to suffer that fate again by turning themselves into consistent top half finishers. Despite this limited league success, Roma did experience some cup glory during this time. During the 1960/61 season Roma beat Birmingham City 4-2 to lift the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, now known as the UEFA Cup, soon to be the Europa League. The Coppa Italia followed in the 1963/64 season after they defeated Torino 1-0 in the final. The second Coppa Italia was secured in the 1968/69 season, the cup being contested in a league like system at this time. Giacomo Losi set an appearance record for the club when he played for Roma for the 450th time. This record stood for an incredible thirty eight years. ______________________________________ +A time for renewed optimism (1970’s to 1990’s) ![]() Bruno Conti spent his entire career playing for Roma Roma made a promising start to the 1970’s with a 3-1 cup win over Blackpool in the Anglo-Italian cup in 1972 (the competition was abandoned in 1996). Roma’s league form during this period was average as the best finish they could muster was third. Roma finished the seventies in promising fashion with a penalty shootout win over Torino in the Coppa Italia final of the 1979/80 season. Roma built on this success in the early eighties with a second place finish in the 1980/81 season, once again beaten to the title by Juventus. Talented players such as Bruno Conti and Roberto Pruzzo guided the Roman club to another Scudetto in the 1982/83 season after a wait of forty one years. The following season was also impressive as Roma once again finished second and lifted the Coppa Italia once more. The Italian outfit also finished as runners up in the European Cup (now known as the UEFA Champions League) final of 1984. The score was 1-1 at the end of normal time, but Roma were beaten by Liverpool on penalties. The successful era that was the 1980’s ended with another runners up place in Serie A in the 1985/86 season. Roma defeated Sampdoria of Genoa 3-2 to win the Coppa Italia for a sixth time. The Eternal City based club then finished third in the 1987/88 season. ____________________________________ +The Modern Era (1990’s to 2009) ![]() Aldair was a key player for Roma in the 90’s and had his no. 6 shirt retired ![]() A murial in the City of Rome of Francesco Totti in honour of the Scudetto win in the 2000/01 season Roma began the 1990’s with a defeat in the UEFA Cup final, losing to fellow Italian club Internazionale 2-1 in 1991. Roma did win the Coppa Italia in this season however. Roma also lost the Supercoppa Italiana. Roma struggled in the league during the nineties, the highest finish being fourth in the 1997/98 season. Roma also lost a Coppa Italia final to Torino during this period. The big success in this time however was Francesco Totti breaking into the Roma first team. The Rome born and bred man would go on to become not only club captain but the record goal scorer and appearance holder. Roma managed to seal a third scudetto in the new millennium. Roma beat Juventus by two points in the 2000/01 season thanks to key players such as Francesco Totti, Cafu and Vincenzo Montella. Brazilian defender Aldair was also a key man in this period and Roma had the number six shirt retired in his honour. Roma have since been able to finish runners up in Serie A numerous times, mainly due to Juventus and Internazionale. Roma were beaten 4-2 to the Coppa Italia by AC Milan in the 2003 cup final. The cup final of the 2005/06 season brought further heartache, this time Internazionale beat the Romans at the final hurdle. Roma finished second in this season following the Serie A scandal that saw Juventus relegated for match fixing. Roma have struggled in the Champions League of late, falling before the might of English Champions Manchester United and were on receiving end of a 7-1 thrashing at Old Trafford during the 2006/07 season. Rome born midfielder Daniele De Rossi scored the only Roma goal on that night but was guilty of missing a penalty at the same ground the following season. Roma won the Coppa Italia in two successive seasons this century, with wins in the 2006/07 and the 2007/08 season. Roma have had numerous big name managers over the years, including Fabio Capello and Sven Goran Eriksson (both of whom have managed the England national team). _____________________________________ +2009- Spalletti’s Moment? The Roma faithful will be hoping that Luciano Spalletti can rediscover the form that saw Roma win three Scudettos. Roma have had recent success in the Coppa Italia and have consistently qualified for the Champions League, often reaching the last sixteen. The fans will now be optimistic that the club can push on and use the incredible loyalty shown by Totti, De Rossi and Mexes to take Italy by storm. The question still remains if Spalletti can achieve cult status in his country’s Capital, or will he slip at the final hurdle?

+The Manager
________________________________ ![]() Name: Luciano Spalletti DOB: 07/03/1959 Place of Birth: Certaldo, Italy Teams Managed: Empoli, Sampdoria, Venezia, Ancona, Udinese, Roma Spalletti had a forgettable playing career as he was restricted to playing Serie C football with the likes of Empoli and Spezia. Shortly after retiring from Football Spalletti had his first taste of management when former club Empoli looked to him to reverse their fortunes. He was initially taken on as a caretaker manager but soon secured the job on a permanent basis. He led Empoli first of all to Serie B and then managed to take them to the promised land of Serie A. Spalletti’s greatest achievements came at Udinese however. Spalletti had a hugely successful campaign in the 2004/05 season which saw Udinese finish fourth and he was able to negotiate the qualifying round the following season to take the club into the Champions League group stage. Udinese were a club that traditionally had very limited resources and were unspectacular in their performances, this therefore put Spalletti very much in the shop window for a larger club to make their move at the start of the 2005/06 season. Roma were the club to make that move after they had swapped managers four times in the season prior to the appointment of Spalletti. The former Sampdoria coach set the record for the longest winning run after winning eleven consecutive games in Serie A. Spalletti has tasted success in the Coppa Italia, with Roma winning it twice under his leadership and twice having to overcome Inter Milan to do so. He has also consistently taken Roma into the Champions League group stage.

+The Stadium
![]() ![]() ![]() ____________________________ Name: Stadio Olimpico Capacity: 72,700 Pitch Dimensions: 105m × 68 m Surface: Grass Opened: 1937 Architect: Annibale Vitellozzi Tenants: Lazio, Roma The Stadio Olimpico is the largest stadium in the City of Rome and accommodates fierce rivals Lazio and Roma, as well as the Italian national team. It is located on the Foro Italico, a sports complex in Rome. The Stadium first opened in 1937 and has been renovated numerous times since its original construction. The Stadium has played host to a number of finals. The European Championship of 1968 was by Italy on this ground by beating the former Yugoslavia 2-0. Similarly Germany beat Belgium 2-1 in the 1980 European Championship in this venue. West Germany defeated Argentina 1-0 in another international final, this time the 1990 World Cup final. The Stadium has also accommodated a number of European club finals, with Liverpool beating Borussia Mönchengladbach 3-1 in the 1977 final. Liverpool also won here in 1984 when they beat the City’s native team Roma in a shootout. Juventus also beat Ajax of Amsterdam in a shootout in the 1996 Champions League final. The ground has also hosted other sports events including the 1960 Olympic Games and the World Athletics Championships of 1987. The ground also features a running track around the pitch, which as a result leaves the fans some way from the action on the pitch. Statistics have shown that Roma consistently draw larger crowds to the Stadio Olimpico than local rivals Lazio.

+2008/09 Season Review _________________________________ +Overview Roma made sure they qualified for the Champions League by finishing in second place, giving them an automatic place in the group stage of 2009/10 tournament. Fine campaigns were had by Simone Perrotta and Daniele De Rossi in particular. ![]() De Rossi finished the season as Roma’s top scorer with 19 goals +August Roma faced Siena at the Stadio Olimpico in the opening game of the season and hammered the Tuscan club 6-0, much to the delight of the Roma fans. Club captain Francesco Totti grabbed a brace, whilst Taddei, Pizarro, Aquilani and De Rossi scored the other goals. Roma 6 Siena 0 ______________________________ +September Roma’s fine form continued into the start of September as they beat Juventus 3-1 in Turin. Juventus legend Alessandro Del Piero scored Juventus’ only goal, whilst Riise, Aquilani and De Rossi got the vital goals for the Capital club. Roma then started to stutter as they were held at home by Genoa and then lost in Naples to Napoli. They finished the month on a high however after overcoming Chievo Verona on home soil. Juventus 1 Roma 3 Roma 0 Genoa 0 Napoli 2 Roma 1 Roma 2 Chievo 0 __________________________ +October Roma got off to a good start in October with an away win at newly promoted side Bologna. The Romans then suffered a shock defeat after Sampdoria recorded an away win in Rome. The Rome City derby was up next, but neither side lost their pride as the result was a draw. Roma had gone two goals in front thanks to Riise and Perrotta, but Rocchi and Rozehnal completed the Lazio comeback. Roma bounced back instantly from this setback by comprehensively beating Sardinian side Cagliari. Roma suffered a setback in the Coppa Italia first leg when Siena managed to hold them 2-2 in Rome. Okaka and Virga took their opportunities, whilst a Massimo Maccarone double made sure the tie was perfectly poised. Bologna 0 Roma 3 Roma 0 Sampdoria 1 Lazio 2 Roma 2 Roma 3 Cagliari 0 Roma 2 Siena 2 (Coppa Italia) ____________________________ +November The start of November was marked by Roma’s early exit from the Coppa Italia. Roma lost 2-1 in Tuscany to crash out of the competition in which they were cup holders. They also started the month slowly in the league, only taking a point away at Torino. Upon returning to Rome the club picked up form by demolishing Atalanta 6-0 thanks to braces from Pizarro and Perrotta, as well as goals from Mexes and De Rossi. Siena 2 Roma 1 (Coppa Italia) Torino 1 Roma 1 Roma 6 Atalanta 0 __________________________ +December Roma made it a second consecutive win by edging out Udinese, whilst they were involved in a seven goal thriller with AC Milan. Milan ran out 5-2 winners thanks to goals from Shevchenko, Zambrotta, Ronaldinho, Pirlo and Flamini. Vucinic and Totti scored the consolation goals for the home side. Roma were quick to return to winning ways as they overcame Reggina 4-2 and beat Catania 3-1. Champions League hopefuls Palermo were able to hold Roma in Sicily. Brighi had opened the scoring before Lanzfame replied for the home side. Totti thought he had struck the winner before the Croatian Budan secured a point for his side. Udinese 0 Roma 1 Roma 2 AC Milan 5 Reggina 2 Roma 4 Roma 3 Catania 1 Palermo 2 Roma 2 ________________________ +January ![]() Spalletti’s preferred starting XI during the 2008/09 campaign Roma secured an extremely important three points in the first week of January after overcoming league leaders Fiorentina 4-2 in Rome. The Florence based club had at one point been runaway leaders but their now stuttering form opened up the race for the Scudetto once more. Totti, Perrotta, Mexes and Vucinic scored the important goals, whilst Italian internationals Gamberini and Gilardino responded for the Viola. Roma had another big game straight away as the following weekend they visited the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza. Inter Milan ran out 2-1 winners in a close fought game. Quaresma and former Roma man Mancini scored for Inter, whilst Vucinic pulled a goal back late on. Roma recovered quickly and recorded wins over Lecce and Siena to stay in the Champions League places during the winter months. Spalletti also organised some summer deals in the January transfer window. Marco Cassetti and Julio Sergio agreed exit deals, the players joining Reggina and Genoa respectively. Youngsters Andrea Poli and Marco Motta will join Roma in the summer, from US Sassuolo Calcio and Udinese; A clear sign that Spalletti is looking to build for the future. Roma 4 Fiorentina 2 Inter Milan 2 Roma 1 Roma 3 Lecce 0 Siena 1 Roma 3 ____________________ +February Roma demolished Fiorentina 4-0 thanks to goals from De Rossi, Totti, Aquilani and Brighi to start the month in superb fashion. This was followed up with an impressive 4-1 win over Palermo. Roma then stuttered as they were held at Catania, although they bounced back to crush lowly Reggina at the Stadio Olimpico. Fiorentina 0 Roma 4 Roma 4 Palermo 1 Catania 2 Roma 2 Roma 4 Reggina 1 ________________________ +March Former Roma forward Antonio Cassano helped his Sampdoria side defeat Roma in Genoa as both fought for European places. This was not the start to March that Roma would have been hoping for. Roma stunned Lazio in the Rome derby by crushing their nearest neighbours 4-0. The month ended with a disappointing draw with Cagliari as Roma continued to put pressure on Fiorentina and Juventus at the top. Sampdoria 2 Roma 0 Roma 4 Lazio 0 Cagliari 2 Roma 2 _____________________ +April April proved to be a good month for Roma as they went unbeaten. They recorded victories over Torino, Atalanta and Udinese before gaining a credible point against AC Milan in the San Siro. Roma 3 Torino 1 Atalanta 0 Roma 1 Roma 0 Udinese 1 AC Milan 1 Roma 1 __________________________ +May Roma looked to build on the success of April and push up the league table and were able to do so thanks to victories over Bologna, Napoli and Genoa. Roma did suffer a surprise 4-2 defeat in Verona as Chievo battled for survival. Roma 2 Bologna 1 Chievo 4 Roma 2 Roma 2 Napoli 1 Genoa 0 Roma 2 _____________________________ +June ![]() Roma completed a double over Juventus but the Turin club ultimately lifted the Scudetto June looked to be a tough month for Roma on paper as two of the three games were against fellow title contenders Juventus and Inter Milan. Roma had home advantage and made it count in both games. Giovinco opened the scoring in Rome but a superb comeback fuelled by goals from Vucinic and the captain Totti saw Roma defeat the first of the big teams. This was followed up by a win over Inter Milan which sealed second place for the Capital side. Roma ultimately conceded the title on the final day of season when they were held to a goalless draw by Lecce, whilst Juventus won to take the scudetto to Turin once again. Fantastic start.Roma are great, I have a private MM with them, and Totti is ace, leading the Serie A in goals I'd look at another CAM/CF though, I bought Gio Dos Santos, Joao Moutinho, and Gonzalo Higuain and they're working wonders for me

Thanks everyone.
I've simmed the first season to be in the CL straight away. Also I don't like Roma fans Spekz but Roma won the poll and the squad isn't too bad ![]() In terms of transfers I'm looking at Italians really, but I would consider signing from the South American Leagues or France as well, just because that's generally where Roma sign people from. Make some suggestions if you like Anyway I'll finish the OP now (the last couple of reserves are just in case) I can do a live Champions League draw tonight possibly if people are online and up for it
