// History :

In the year 1900, the Saints reached the FA Cup final, however they suffered a 4-0 defeat against Bury. Two years later they reached the final for a second time, suffering a 2-1 defeat against Sheffield United. After the Second World War, a succession of managers took charge at the Dell, but the Saints were relegated in 1953. Ted Bates led Southampton to promotion four years later. The Saints reached the semi finals of the FA cup in the years 1925 and 1927 however could not find their way in to the final of the competition. Between 1954 and 1958, they played their football in the Southern league division three and found promotion in to the third division in 1958. They won the third division at the end of the 1959 – 1960 season as they finished off in top position of the division. Their pre - 1960 managers included, Arthur Dominy, Bill Dodgin, Sid Cann, George Roughton and Ted Bates.

Southampton were playing second division football once again at the start of the 1960 – 1961 league season and enjoyed a decent season back in the second division as they finished off the campaign in resounding eighth place. They reached the quarter finals of the league cup only suffering a 4-2 defeat against Burnley in the last eight of the cup competition. The 1961 – 1962 season saw Southampton improve their league standing even further as they enjoyed a sixth place finish in the second division. Derek Reeves was in prolific form for the club and Terry Paine was beginning to establish himself in English football. An eleventh position finish at the end of the 1962 – 63 season was followed up the following campaign by a convincing fifth place finish. The Saints enjoyed a fine run in the 1963 FA Cup as they reached the semi finals of the competition, narrowly suffering a 1-0 defeat against Manchester unite din a match played at Villa Park. Southampton became a really strong side during the 1964 – 1965 campaign as they finished the season off in fourth position as they narrowly missed out on promotion in to the top flight as Martin Chivers was in prolific form for the club.

Southampton enjoyed their finest ever season in their history during the 1965 – 1966 season as they finished off the campaign ins second place in the second division, which in turn resulted in the club gaining promotion in to the top flight for the first time in the clubs history. They crashed out of the league cup and FA cup in the third round as they suffered defeats against Hull City and Burnley in the cup competitions.
The Saints struggled in the first division in their debut season there as they narrowly avoided relegation finishing the campaign off in 19th place. They reached the fourth round of the FA cup; however they suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat against Bristol city in the competition. Their finest season during the 1960’s would have to be regarded as the 1969 – 1969 campaign as they Saints recorded a seventh position finish at the end of the season in the first division under the guidance of Ted Bates. They also reached the quarter finals of the league cup, however suffered a 1-0 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur in the last eight losing the match 1-0. Mike Channon and Terry Paine were outstanding for the club during the 1969 – 1970 season; however they only managed to finish the season off in 19th position, narrowly escaping relegation.

The 1970 – 1971 first division campaign proved to be a great one for the Saints as they swept to a delightful seventh position finish at the end of the season. The enjoyed a fine run in the FA Cup as they reached the fifth round of the cup competition, suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat against Liverpool. Southampton were most fortunate to escape relegation the following season out of the top flight as they finished the campaign off in a dismal 19th position. The 1972 – 1973 league season proved to be the last one that saw Ted Bates in charge at the club and it was not a disappointing one by no means for the Saints as they finished the campaign off in 13th place. They were knocked out in the cup competitions in the third round as they lost to Crystal palace in the FA Cup and they were defeated against Notts County in the league cup.
Lawrie McMenemy took charge at Southampton in 1973 and his first year in charge at the club saw the saints plummet in to 20th position in the league which in turn resulted in relegation in to the second division. Their first year back in the second tier of English football was not a great one as the Saints stumbled to a disappointing 13th place finish, way off the mark of a promotion place back in to the top flight. They reached the last sixteen of the league cup however suffering defeat against Colchester United in the fourth round of the cup competition

The 1975 – 1976 campaign was arguably the finest in the history of Southampton FC despite only being a second division club. They reached the final of the FA cup, meeting Manchester united in the final and Lawrie McMenemy guided the club to a fine victory over the mighty Reds. It was a single goal scored by Bobby Stokes that defeated Manchester United in the final. The Saints also enjoyed a fine league campaign finishing the season off in sixth position.
The Saints enjoyed another decent FA cup run in 1977, reaching the fifth round of the competition, this time Manchester United gaining revenge on the club as the Saints were defeated 2-1. They also managed a respectable ninth position finish in the league.
The 1977 – 1978 campaign was another fine one for the Saints as they enjoyed a great season in the second division that ultimately resulted in as second place finish at the end of the year, in turn resulting in promotion in to the top flight.
Their first season back in the first division was a great one; they reached the league cup final for the first time, meeting Nottingham Forest in the final of the cup competition, suffering a 3-2 defeat in a thrilling encounter. They enjoyed a fine run in the FA Cup and a decent 14th position finish in the league.
They were outstanding in the first division during the 1979 – 1980 season as they finished the campaign off in eighth position. Chris Nicholl and Alan Ball both played for Southampton in the late 1970’s period.

Lawrie McMenemy had now established the Saints as one of the biggest teams in England by the start of the 1980 – 1985 league campaign and the season proved to be a mighty success for the Saints as they embarked on their finest ever league campaign, finishing it off in sixth position. They also managed to reach the fifth round of the FA Cup however they suffered defeat against Everton after extra time in what was a great performance by the Saints. Southampton enjoyed another fine campaign during the 1981 – 1982 season as they finished it off in seventh position. It was a campaign that was notable for the emergence of future England player; Mark Wright coming in to the Southampton side. The Saints put on another decent display during the 1982 -83 season in a 12th place finish. The 1983 - 1984 season has proven to be their finest ever league campaign to date as they were involved in the title race through out the season and went on to finish in second place in the top flight. In what was a great season, they also reached the semi finals of the FA Cup, however suffered a 1-0 defeat against Everton in the last four. The 1984 – 1985 season proved to be the last one that saw Lawrie McMenemy in charge at the club as the Saints finished it off strongly in an impressive fifth place. Steve Moran was emerging himself as a fine player in football. Chris Nicholl took charge at Southampton at the end of the campaign.

The 1985 – 1986 season was the first year which saw Chris Nicholl in charge at the club as the Saints endured on a decent 14th position finish in the top flight by the end of the season. The pleasure from their season came from their fine run in the FA cup that saw the club reach the semi finals of the cup competition as they suffered a 3-0 defeat against Liverpool in a match played at White Hart lane. The Saints reached a semi final in a cup competition again the following season as they met Liverpool once again, this time in the league cup as they suffered a 3-0 defeat against the mighty Liverpool. For much of the late 1980’s the Saints hovered around the top end of the bottom half of the table, however they enjoyed a fine run during the 1989 – 1990 season as they finished the campaign off in an impressive seventh position finish. They also reached the quarter finals of the league cup, suffering a 2-0 defeat against Oldham Athletic in the last eight of the cup competition. The 1989 – 1990 Southampton side included players like, Tim Flowers, Jason Dodd, Francis Benali, Jimmy Case, Neil Ruddock, Rodney Wallace, Glenn Cockerill, Paul Rideout, Barry Horne and Matthew Le Tissier

The Saints came in to the 1990 – 1991 campaign with a fairly strong side and had Matthew le Tissier at their disposal who was emerging as one of the finest player in England. However for much of the early 1990’s the Saints struggled for league form. They finished the 1990 – 1991 season in a respectable 14th position and reached the quarter finals of the league cup, suffering a 3-2 defeat against eventual finalists Manchester unite din the last eight. However the saints failed to find form during the following three seasons in the top flight. A 16th position finish at the end of the 1991 – 1992 season was not bettered in any way whatsoever by the end of the 1992 – 1993 premiership season as they were involved in a relegation battle that saw them avoid the drop, finishing off in 18th place, many blaming the departure of Alan Shearer as a factor in their down turn. The 1993 – 1994 campaign saw the Saints once again struggle for form and only managed a repeat of the previous year, an 18th place finish to ensure their premier league status. After reaching the quarter finals of the 1992 FA cup, suffering a narrow 2-1 defeat against Norwich City, the Saints failed to surge past the third round of either the league cup or FA cup during the following two season as the club were looking to strengthen in time for the 1994 – 1995 league campaign.

The 1994 – 1995 seasons saw Southampton finish off the campaign in 10th position, their highest league finish since 1990. Matt le Tissier was in fine form for the club and scored probably the goal of the season for the Saints. The 1995 – 1996 campaign saw the Saints struggle once again in the premiership, once again avoiding relegation narrowly as they finished off the campaign in 17th place. They enjoyed a fine run in the FA cup as they surged in to the quarter finals only to meet Manchester United, a club who would go on to win the double that season. The Saints lost the encounter 2-0. Southampton enjoyed a fine run in the 1996 – 1997 league cup as they reached the last eight, however surprisingly lost against Stockport County in the quarter finals of the cup competition. They struggled in the premiership once against they could only manage to finish the season off in a disappointing sixth position. Jason Dodd and Francis Benali had been in fine form for the Saints through out the season. Southampton made a resounding improvement during the 1997 – 1998 campaign in the premiership as they enjoyed a decent 12th place finish. They marginally crashed out of the league cup in the fourth round as they suffered a 2-1 defeat against Chelsea after extra time being played in the match

The Saints finished the 1998 – 1999 season in a disappointing 17th position and could not drastically improve it the following year as they finished it off in 16th place. The Saints met Aston Villa in the fourth round of the FA Cup and league during the 1999 – 2000 campaign; however they lost on both occasions against the Midlands club.Southampton made a decent improvement in the premiership during the 2000 – 2000 campaign as they finished off the season in a top half finish of tenth position. Chris Marsden and Marain Pahars were in fine form for the Saints through out the campaign. The Saints reached the fifth round of the FA cup, meeting Tranmere Rovers and after the match finished all square in the first match, the replay proved to be a thriller as the score line ended 4-3; however Tranmere Rovers was the team who scored the four goals in the match. The Saints enjoyed a decent campaign during the 2001 – 2002 league season as they finished of the campaign in eleventh position in the premiership. They were knocked out of the FA cup in third round as they suffered defeat against Rotherham united in the cup competition.

The 2002 – 2003 campaign proved to be a fantastic one for Southampton. They were outstanding in the league as they finished off in a very respectable eighth place, their highest finish since 1990. It was a year that saw James Beattie finish off as the top English goal scorer in the premiership. The Saints reached the final of the FA cup for the second time in the clubs history and met Arsenal in the final of the competition, suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat against the Gunners at the Millennium Stadium. Wayne Bridge was in outstanding form for the Saints and left the club at the end of the season for Chelsea. Southampton reached the quarter finals of the league cup the following year as they suffered a defeat against future finalists Bolton Wanderers in the competition. The Saints also enjoyed a fine 12th position finish. However the 2004 – 2005 campaign was a disappointing one for the Saints as they suffered relegation in to the second tier of English football for the first time in 27 years as they were involved in a relegation battle that consisted of West Brom, Crystal palace and Norwich City. Despite Peter Crouch playing well for the Saints they finished the season off in the bottom three. Harry Redknapp remained as manager for few months during the 2005 – 2006 season as the Saints could only manage a 12th place finish at the end of the campaign. It was a season also notable for the emergence of Theo Walcott, a player who moved to Arsenal in January 2006

WOTTE COUNTING ON YOUNGSTERS TO HIT BIG TIME

(Could these be the youngsters who take Southampton up to the promised land?)

SOUTHAMPTON, ENGLAND - Each season in the Coca Cola Championship, all 24 teams dream of shining in the Premier League, but for the players at Southampton Football Club, it's more than a dream. Dutch manager Mark Wotte knows most of his players want to have a shot at he big time, but he says they may have to wait a few years.

This season, Southampton have blended in youth with expierience, hoping it will pay off, sending the up to the Premier League, but Wotte is confident 3 superstars will give them the edge in the Coca Coca Championship

He still is ages away from his peak, so we are hoping to get the best out of Olly before he hits his peak.

However, they aren't the only youngsters who may shine this season. Romain Gasmi, Ryan Smith, Lee Holmes, Lee Molyneux, David McGoldrick, Anthony Pulis, Adam Lallana, Zoltan Liptak, Lloyd James, Matthew Paterson, Kyle Davies, Tommy Forecast, Jamie Hatch, Jamie White, Kayne McLaggon, Jeffrey Imudia, Oscar Gobern and Joseph Mills are all part of the new generation coming through at Southampton, and if they are going to be anything like other talent they brought through, like Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott and Wayne Bridge, they are going to have a happy season down South.
