++TEAM HISTORY
Werder Bremen seems to owe its foundation to a bit of luck. Just before the turn of the 20th century in 1898, a group of vocational high school students in Bremen accepted some sporting equipment as a prize for winning a competition. One of the items they received was a football. Something that was still virtually unknown in Germany. The students then tried to play the game of football, and much to their surprise, they discovered that the game was full of action and fun.

After figuring out that it was indeed a great sport, the group of students wanted to make something more of the game. So, on February 4th, 1899, they formed "Football Club Werder Bremen of 1899," on the verander of a local restaurant. Although other football clubs had been formed prior to Werder Bremen, football was still in its founding years, so the club had to wait a few months untill competitive football was an option.

In 1903, Werder captured their first Bremen Championship, along with other two other titles in the other existing leagues. Two years later in 1905, the club became the first team in Bremen to charge spectators an admission price. They were also the first team in the region to fence in the pitch. 1912 saw Werder Bremen become the sole participant in the newly establish North German Football League.

Despite war raging throughout Europe in the early 1900's, Bremen continued to maintain their sporting activities. They would capture the Bremen Championship once again in 1916 despite many difficulties. Even after the end of the First World War, Werder Bremen continued to endure, after many clubs disbanded after the war.

Hans Jarburg was the main contributer to the club's survival after the war, and was the first manager of Werder Bremen after the fighting. However, there were still many setbacks. Many of the founding members of the club perished in World War I and the construction of a new stadium sent Bremen plunging into severe debts. As the years moved on, the club became more popular, proving to be one of Germany's best teams. Looking at the club's standing in cup competition, as well as the National Championship, the war year of 1942 proved to be one of Bremen's most successful.

Bremen survived the Second World War, and despite all the troubles they faced in the aftermath, they were able to reconstruct the club in only a year. Many people met secretly among the rubbles of a destroyed Bremen in attempts to reform the sporting activities in the club. However they were not allowed to engage in such actions because the post-war governing power structure forbid the resumption of clubs, which existed and operated under fascist Germany during the period of National Socialism.

After the war, football was played in a divided upper league. Bremen competed against teams such as Hannover 96, St-Pauli, and Oldenberg. There was one match that always guarenteed a packed stadium, and that was a game between Bremen and Hamburger SV. The teams began to form a rivalry, one that still lasts to this day.

Although Bremen competed against the better teams in the Upper League, their performance was rather unpredictable. They often prevailed over the stronger teams, but would then be vanquished by the smaller, less talented sides in the league. But despite their unpredictable play, Werder Bremen remained to be a strong candidate to compete in a newly implemented league called the "Bundesliga."

For the first time in their history, Bremen took home the DFB-Pokal in 1961. This was the club's first major victory, as they beat 1.FC Kaiserslauten 2-0 in the competitions finale. Having gained the cup title, Werder Bremen made their debut in Europe, but were then eliminated in the third round by Spanish side, Atletico Madrid.

In the inaugaral playing of the Bundesliga in 1963, Bremen, the second best team in the Upper League, placed in 10th out of sixteen other sides from around Germany. Following that season, the club brought in a handful of talented players. Bremen improved greatly and the new players induced an immediate sensation. In the 1964/65 season, the Bundesliga's second in existance, Bremen won the league, becoming the second club to do so.

Willi Multhaupt, Bremen's championship manager, left after the season to take the reigns of Borussia Dortmund. With Multhaupt's departure, it looked as if he took Bremen's future wins with him, as Werder Bremen dropped to 16th in the league during the first few months of the season. However, a new manager led Bremen back up through the ranks of table, and Bremen closed out the season in 2nd.

After falling down into the second division, Bremen were in need of a revival. That revival came in the form of managerOtto Rehhagel. Rehhagel led the club back up into the Bundesliga and welcomed the arrival of many young players in 1982/83. Under Rehhagel's leadership, Bremen soared back up the Bundesliga, finishing in second once again.

Finishing in second provided Bremen with international appearences. Aside from success in the Bundesliga and the DFB-Pokal, European competition showed how much Bremen had improved over the years. In Bremen's first few international competition matches, they were ousted in the preliminary rounds. Then, came matches that were referred to as "Wonder of the Weser." These matches were fantastic games, that proved Bremen triumphs in Europe.

The groundwork for this international acclaim had been laid-out in the Bundesliga and the DFB-Pokal where Werder had displayed sensational performances that earned them a series of championship titles. In 1988 Werder celebrated the championship title for only the second time, only two years after the infamous failed Kutzop-penalty kick, which decided whether Werder would come out as champion or just vice-champion of 1986.

Three years in a row, Werder competed as finalists in DFB-Pokals of 1989, 1990, and 1991. In 1991 they succeeded in bringing home the title when they defeated 1.FC Koln in penalties. Another DFB-Pokal trophy was added to Bremen's growing list of honors when Werder defeated Rot Weiß Essen in 1994. In between cup titles, Werder clinched the Bundesliga Championship honours for the third time when they finished triumphantly from a tight duel against Bayern Munich in 1993.

This record of amazing achievement showed tha SV Werder Bremen without Otto Rehhagel is unimaginable. But, although Otto Rehhagel was the only head coach in the Bundesliga who was granted a permanent and indefinite contract by a club, he decided to part with club after 14 years. Rehhagel's departure wasn't easy, neither for Werder nor for Rehhagel himself. For many fans, it was hard to understand why of all places in the Bundesliga had he chosen to join that Bremen's rivals, Bayern Munich.

Bremen struggled after Rehhagel's departure, as they were quickly relegated after a few years without the German manager. It was the arrival of another successor, Wolfgang Sidka that brought back the taste of the glory and victory from the Rehhagel Era. In the 1997/98 season he moved Werder up the table, as they were once again European contenders, as they compteted in the UEFA Cup.

However, that glory was shortly lived, as Bremen experienced their worst season in history, and Sidka was sacked. Felix Magath took the reigns, and was seen responsible to bring success back to Werder Bremen. Under his command came a mere replay of a previous disappointment that had never ever been experienced in the team's existence. Although Felix Magath remained coach, the search for a Rehhagel successor had not reached its end.

Success was ruled-out altogether so in 1999, so a transitional solution was made to hire a successor internally. Thomas Schaaf, a football player who had played during Otto Rehhagel's time and lived through all its great spectacles, was promoted as head coach. This arrangement allowed the club to have the time it needed to find the right coach. However, under Schaaf, Bremen were surprisingly back on their feet, as they reached the DFB-Pokal final, where they would defeat Bayern Munich on penalty kicks.

Thomas Schaaf has continued his job as the club's manager, and looking back on those days when he was hired as a temporary coach, it is remarkable how he has brought the team back to brilliance and how he has emerged in the Bundesliga as a highly recognized and successful coach. His list of achievements does not only include the DFB-Pokal title in 1999, but also Werder's return as finalist in the following season where Bayern Munich won and Werder settled for the vice-campion title.

Moreover, Werder made its comeback in the UEFA Cup reaching the quarterfinals, the best result that has been attained after a long spell of absences. This season, Bremen will look to advance through the stages of the UEFA Champions League after their trumphant Bundesliga Takeover, defeating Bayern Munich by a slim three point margin to obtain their fifth Bundesliga title. This year, Schaaf's priority will certainly be a European Takeover, as Bremen look to shock the world by overthrowing Europe's kings such as FC Barcelona, Manchester United, and AC Milan.

After over a hundred years of history, where does the club stand now and what lies ahead for SV Werder Bremen? The present has etched the hallmarks of radical changes that will bring forward reasonable optimism for the future. The club's management structure has been professionalized, the Weserstadion will be renovated, and Thomas Schaaf's squad consists of the youngest players in Germany. Certainly, a European Takeover is in the works.
