Transfer Gossip

It has been announced today by Guus Hiddink, the Chelsea manager, that 'at least one more signing needs to be made for him to have his 'perfect squad''. Ricardo Quaresma of Inter Milan and Lionel Messi of Barcelona have both been linked, but the manager said that 'we are not looking for another star player, just back-up. Don't expect a big signing'. So, more likely candidates are Aaron Lennon of Tottenham or Dirk Kuyt of Liverpool. If the player(s) that comes in is not a winger, it is more than likely that he will be a centra midfielder, with Manchester United expecting a bid for Rodrigo Possebon in the next few days. Hiddink also said that Deco has now been transfer-listed, and he is hoping that 'one or two' of the players from the Youth Academy will be coming up to the first team. If they do, it is expected that one or both of them will go out on loan to lower-league clubs.

David Beckham Transfer Bid

In a press conference today Guus Hiddink said that 'a bid has been put in for LA Galaxy midfielder David Beckham. We feel that he would be superb back-up for Joe Cole, and he can also play in the centre of midfield.' The arrival of 'Becks' would surely earn Chelsea more support from America, where for the past three seasons they have been on as pre-season tour.

In other news, Foran and Severin have been brought up from the Youth Team, but both are expected to go out on loan to League 1 or League 2 clubs. Hiddink also said 'Unfortunately we had to reject one of our other youngsters, because we could feel that we would not make it with us. Hopefully he can prove us wrong in the future. Folan is a great centre-back, who's good with his head and likes to get forward, and it's because of this that in the future we will try to turn him into a full-back. Severin is a striker who is also good with his head, and he could be a great partner for Franco di Santo or Salamon Kalou.

We are looking at a few other players from Serie A and La Liga who could be useful to us, but especially some more up-and-coming players. We'll only try and get a couple of younger players in, as we don't want an enormous wage bill. Hopefully we'll be able to lose some deadwood such as Deco and Ivanovic, which will reduce the wage bill by a large amount. We definitely won't be offering either new contracts.'

He had this to say on the upcoming game against rivals Arsenal 'I know how big a game it is, and I know the players will give their all. Hopefully we can get another three points on the board and start to build on our current position in the table.

Transfer Round-Up
At the end of a reasonably busy transfer window for Chelsea, Deco left to join West Ham on the other side of London, while Severin, who recently graduated from Chelsea's Youth Academy, joined Brentford on a season-long loan deal, with both players leaving on deadline day. However, David Beckham was also brought in on deadline day, for a fee of £4.5m, on a one-year deal of around £16,000 per week. Earlier in this week Ferreira and Bridge left for Nantes and Wigan respectively, while Foran moved up to the first team from the Youth Academy.

Manager Guus Hiddink had this to say on the club's dealings during the transfer window 'We're happy with all the transfers we made during the window, especially bringing in David Beckham from LA Galaxy. We've given some of our best youth team players full-time contracts, and we've reduced the wage bill with four players moving out. Paim will hopefully next season have gained enough experience to battle for a place in the team, but for the mean-time Beckham will be hoping to improve his England chances with a few good games. In January we will be trying to sign one or two big names and a few young talents.'

In other news, Beckham said 'he was pleased to be joining a great club' and that he hoped his move would help him improve his fitness.

Chelsea 4-0
Darlington

Chelsea easily beat a dire Darlington team 4-0 on a clear night at Stamford Bridge in West London. Chelsea put out a virtual second team, with Beckham making his debut in the League Cup. Chelsea started the game as the better team, with di Santo unbelievably missing the target when through on goal after three minutes.

David Beckham managed a shot seven minutes later, but the Darlington 'keeper pulled of a great save to deny the midfielder. Three minutes later, and 'Becks' was at it again, this time shooting just over from 30 yards out.

Next, di Santo was unable to score from a rebound from a Ballack shot, poking the ball just wide. A few minutes later it looked like the visitors had taken the lead from a freekick just outside the area, but, with Cudicini stranded, the ball went out off the bar.

Chelsea conceded another free-kick only seconds later, but this time it went horribly wide. From Cech's goal-kick, Chelsea earnt a free-kick, and with Beckham stepping up, he forced a save from the 'keeper. Belletti was unable to score after the goalie punched the corner away, instead shooting over the bar.

Ballack then forced another corner as he shot from a tight angle inside the penalty area, but nothing came of it. Five minutes before half-time, a di Santo shot just curled wide from 20 yards, and it looked like the score would be 0-0 going into the break. But, after, Drogba had come on to replace the injured Franco di Santo, Beckham curled a shot into the bottom corner with his weaker left foot.
http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k232/anmol56/beckham-celebrate-2.jpg

So, at half-time, Chelsea could be pleased with their performance, but not with the score.

Ten minutes after the restart, Chelsea had their first chance of the second half, with Kalou shooting just wide from close-range. The same player forced the 'keeper to make his first save of the half a few minutes later.

Chelsea, with fifteen minutes let, then let rip, with Malouda controlling a corner on his chest before sending the ball into the back of the net with a sizzling volley.

Kalou then grabbed a late brace lalala a shot into the bottom corner then firing a shot in off the post from 25 yards in stoppage time.

Manager Press Conference:
'We played extremely well, but, like ate Arsenal, we were unable to convert our chances. We could, and should, have won by 10 or 11 goals. It was great to get our first clean sheet of the season. Hopefully we can build on this.'

Man of the match:
Salamon Kalou
