Club History
Bolton was Founded in 1874 as Christ Church FC by Reverend John Farrall Wright. The club was one of the original twelve members of the English Football League, and during their first 75 years they won the FA Cup 4 times.

However, the club has not won a major trophy since their last FA Cup victory in 1958, and the FA Charity Shield that same year.

The team has spent more of their time in the top tier of English football than any other. They have spent the majority of their time since the creation of the English Premiership in the mid 1990’s as a member of the top flight.

The most recent success of the club came during the reign of Sam Allardyce. Allardyce lead the Wanderers to the 2004 League Cup but they would fall just short in a loss to Middlesbrough.

The teams 6th place finish in 2005 secured them a place in the UEFA Cup. The following year the team would make the last 32 but were eliminated by French side Marseille. Allardyce led the team to four consecutive top half finishes in his last four years before his resignation.

Sammy Lee, former assistant to Allardyce took the helm and helped the Wanderers secure a spot in the 2007-2008 UEFA Cup.

Lee would however fail to live up to the standards of his predecessor Allardyce and after only one win in eleven matches of the 2007 season he was replaced by Gary Megson who led the Wanderers to a 16th place finish narrowly escaping relegation after several years of consistently top half finishes.

Megson just recently broke the club transfer record with the £8.2 million purchase of Johan Elmander from Toulouse on June 27, 2008.

Front Office

Chairman

Phil Gartside is an English Businessman and prominent Football Association member who has been on the board at Bolton since 1989. He was elected chairman in 1999 and immediately appointed Sam Allagyce as the manager. Under his reign as Chairman Gartside has seen Bolton have the best success it has experienced since the glory days under Charles Foweraker in the 1920’s.

Gartside has seen the club consolidate its holding as a mid to top table club in the premiership and has seen the club enter in the UEFA Cup for the first time in its history.

Manager

Gary Megson has been a manager in the English leagues since 1995. He has spent time at the helms of NorwichCity, Blackpool, StockportCounty, StokeCity, West Bromwich Albion, NottinghamForest, LeicesterCity, and now Bolton Wanderers.

Megson was not first choice for the job, but he was able to keep the club in the premiership and avoid relegation of a team under his control for the first time in his personal history.

His victory over Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Cup last 16 in 2008 was squandered when he played a reserve side against Sporting Lisbon in the following match missing the team’s best chance at a major trophy since 1958.

The effort to save strength for a Premiership relegation match against Wigan also was a waste as the 10-man Latics defeated the starting 11 on the weekend after the Wanderers were ousted from the UEFA Cup.
The sale of Nicolas Anelka to Chelsea in January of 2008 for £15 Million Pounds has yet to bear fruit for the new boss as no replacement was purchased at the time. The success of Anelka at Chelsea in Partnership with Didier Drogba has left many Bolton fans in wanting after the sale. The June purchase of Johan Elmander from Toulouse will be seen if it has any bearing on the coming season.

Default Sit down with Megson and Gartside

Manager Gary Megson and Chairman Phil Gartside sit down with ESPN Soccernet’s Richard Jolly

Bolton, Greater Manchester - August 1, 2008

Rich: Hello to both of you and thank you for taking the time to sit and talk with me this afternoon.

Phil: Your welcome Richard.

Gary: Thank you for having us.

Rich: Now down to business fellows shall we?

Phil: Of course

Rich: After last seasons relegation battle and 16th place survival finish, where do you look to go from here.

Phil: Hopefully up Rich, that would be the best course I would believe, I cant say Mr. Davies(Club Owner Eddie Davies) would like to see us do worse.

Gary: It was a tough year, and it was a fight to the finish, but I believe we showed our resiliency by being able to pull it together at the end.

Rich: Gary this was the first time you were able to keep a squad up after a relegation fight. How has it helped your conscience to know that the board is behind you.

Gary: It is a great thing to have the board behind you even after tough times. Phil and the rest of the board members at the club have been really good to me, and I believe there is a bright future for the club.

Rich: Phil, what are your current expectations for the club this year?

Phil: I believe we have to make a push to get back into the top half. Sammy (Allardyce) proved that it was possible for us to compete in the top half even though we are a lower budget club.

We are going to have to take it one step at a time. I know we have made around £6,000,000 available for the rest of the transfer period, and we will see where it goes from there.Gary and I have had multiple conversations this last month, and it looks like we are going to try and make a few more moves, and send some youngsters out on loan.

Rich: With transfers in mind Gary, do you have any prospects in mind currently?

Gary: We are looking at several players and having conversations with several other premiership clubs. We are trying to bring in probably three more players. We are going to have to do a little more to the defense and the midfield, and Kevin Davies needs a true strike partner to help make the addition of Johan Elmander as our new right winger, truly effective.

We are looking at some out of favor players from several English clubs and some new youthful acquisitions from other clubs around the continent. It is up to me to bring in the new players under budget, and if I want anything to use in January I am going to have to bring in the players to earn the boards support to request transfer funds in the next window.

Rich: It certainly seems that you two have a plan, and it looks like we should be seeing and hearing good things from Bolton Wanderers this season. Good luck to you both and to the club on the upcoming season.

Phil: Thank you Rich

Gary: Always a pleasure Rich, and thanks.
