Benayoun Stops Chelsea From the Spot Reina Makes Terrible Mistake ![]() vs ![]() During pre-game warm-ups Jesus Navas suffered a pulled hamstring resulting in Deco replacing him as a starter. The game started off well for Chelsea. They soon pushed Liverpool into the backside of their own half pressing them. In the 7th minute Dossena gave a back pass to Reina, a fine pass with nothing wrong. Reina took a big touch the other way towards the penalty mark. As Drogba came at Reina—Reina tried clearing the ball Drogba tackled him taking the ball past Reina and taps the ball into an empty receiving boos from the crowd as he ran away celebrating. Rafa Benitez stood in awe as it sunk it that Reina had just made a grave mistake causing his team a goal so early in the match. Eight minutes later Torres dribbled past defenders and slotted the ball at the corner of the goal! Fernando Torres had missed by inches and shown that he was a great threat to the Chelsea defense as he dribbled past players proving he was not to be underestimated. As the half continued it seemed as Chelsea and Liverpool were evenly matched with neither team being able to break down the other’s defense to create any decent chances. Halftime came with the Blues boss Big Phil going into the half happy with his sides first half performance. The second half started as the first half ended with midfield play. Just past the hour mark Nicolas Anelka took down Robbie Keane in the box!!! Anelka received a red card and sulked off the field as players argued in the penalty area. Robbie Keane was taken off for Dirk Kuyt due to injury. Benayoun stepped up to take the penalty kick setting the ball down. The referee blew his whistle allowing Benayoun to take his penalty. Yossi hit the ball to the right side and Petr Cech didn’t move tying the game up 1-1! With 26 minutes left could either team take advantage and grab 3 points? As the last 10 minutes clicked by both teams desperately tried to score a goal. Kuyt ripped a cracker low at the corner and Petr Cech just reached it punching the ball away with his hand for a corner! The corner was taken and wasted by Liverpool and Chelsea regained possession. In the stoppage time now Deco took the ball down the wing. A cross went awry and found its way out to Bosingwa nearly 30 yards out. Jose Bosingwa hit a shot first time with zipped towards goal a remarkable speed! The ball missed the goal frame by centimeters! Bosingwa looked crestfallen as Reina took the last kick of the game as the referee blew for the end of the match. The two English giants had stalemated. MATCH FACTS CHELSEA—LIVERPOOL 1-Goals-1 0-Assists-0 6-Shots-7 2-On Target-4 6-Fouls-1 1-Bookings-0 1-Corners-1 58%-Possession-42% 76%-Passing-72% Goals: 7'-Didier Drogba 64'- Yossi Benayoun (PK) Man of the Match Michael Essien Scolari Comments: Today I award Michael Essien with the Man of the Match award for quite a number of reasons. The first being that Michael did terrifically for us in the central midfield he kept play fluid and helped us greatly when switch plays were needed. Michael also held back Liverpool plays when he went into a defensive position holding back Benayoun, Torres, Keane and then Kuyt. I am very happy with his play today. ![]() Deco and Essien warm-up.
