![]() Grimsby Town Football Club: A History ![]() Grimsby Town Fc were founded in 1878, after a meeting held at the Wellington Arms public house. The local Worsley Cricket Club were in attendance, as they wanted to create a football team to occupy the winter evenings once the Cricket season came to an end. The clubs original name, Grimsby Pelham, was taken from the family name of a prominent local land owner, the Earl Of Yardborough. The club purchased land at Clee Park in 1880, which was to become the clubs ground up until 1889 when they relocated to Abbey Park. The club made the move to Blundell Park in 1899, where they have remained ever since. The club joined the newly formed "Combination" in 1888, where they would play there first league football. The league however, quickly collapsed, and the club applied to join the Football League. There application was denied, and in 1889 the club joined the Football Alliance. The club was finally granted entry to the Football League in 1892 when it was split into two divisions, and the club won its first match, a 2-1 victory over Northwich Victoria. Grimsby achieved promotion to the first division in 1901/1902, however there venture did not last long and two seasons later they were relegated. A decade later, Grimsby's fall continued as they became a non-league side. They failed to be re-elected in 1910, and they were forced down into the Midland League. The trip to the Midland League would not last long however, as Grimsby became champions in there first season, and went on to replace local rivals Lincoln City in the Football League. Dues to the demands of the fish trade in the area, Grimsby Town F.C. and Hull City A.F.C. held the unique distinction of being the only teams in the Football League allowed to play fixtures on Christmas day. The first full season after the great war saw the club relegated once again, this time to the new Third Division North. By 1929 the clubs fortunes would change once again, as they achieved promotion back to the First Division, where they would stay and achieve there highest ever league finish, coming fifth in the 1934/1935 season. 1936 would see the club achieve its highest ever finish in the F.A. Cup when they reached the semi final against Arsenal. The game however was not a good one, and ended in a 1-0 loss. In 1939, the club again reached the semi final of the F.A. Cup, the match to be played against Wolverhampton Wanderers. The game which was held at Old Trafford, saw a massive attendance of 76,962, which remains the Theater Of Dreams' largest attendance. Sadly for the Mariners, the game was lost 5-0 after second choice goalkeeper George Moulson was injured at an early stage of the match. With the rules of the day not allowing substitutions, Grimsby were forced to play on with 10 men and an outfield player in goal. The match was also the first time numbers were worn on the back of players kits, three months before it became official policy. At the end of the second world war, the club were relegated from the first division at the end of the 1947/1948 season, never to return to the English top division again. The majority of the 1950's and 1960's was spent bouncing between the Second Division and the Third Division North, and later the Third Division. The club hit a massive low point in 1968, when they were relegated for the first time to the Fourth Division. The 1970's began a revival for the Mariners, as they were promoted to the Third Division in 1971 as Fourth Division champions. The club stayed up until 1977, when they were again relegated to the Fourth Division. The trip down was to be a short one however, and they were promoted yet again in 1979. 1980 was to see the Mariners return to the second division after 16 years, achieving promotion as Third Division champions. Ther first season back in the second tier saw the club achieve a credible 7th place finish. That year, work began on a new stand at Blundell Park, originally names the Findus Stand, and now known as the Carlsberg Stand, after the former Barrets Stand was deemed unsafe. The club achieved its highest league finish since 1947/1948 in the 1983/1984 season, finishing fifth in the Second Division. Grimsby's fortunes were to turn sour however, and in 1987 the were relegated after loosing 8 of there last 10 games and falling from 8th to 21st. In 1988 the club were back in the fourth division, and in financial turmoil. Alan Buckley was appointed in 1991, and turned to fortunes of the club around, earning two consecutive promotions. The team established themselves in the First Division, with the squad containing many Grimsby cult hero's such as Shaun Cunnington, Mark Lever, Dave Gilbert, and Clive Mendonca. In 1995, Alan Buckley parted ways with the club to join West Bromwich Albion, and his replacement was Brian Laws. During his time in charge, Laws achieved fame after an altercation in the changing room with fan-favorite Italian striker Ivano Bonetti, leaving the latter with a broken cheekbone and forcing the player to leave the club. Grimsby's up and down fortunes continued, and in 1997 the team was once again relegated. The following season saw former manager Alan Buckley, after an unsuccessful spell at West Bromwich Albion. Buckley turned the club around as the Mariners experienced there most successful post war period. The club made a winning trip to Wembley in the 1998 Football League Trophy, and went on to gain promotion to the First Division four weeks later. The following two seasons saw respectable mid table finishes, and in 2001 after a boardroom shake up, Alan Buckley was replaced as manager by Lennie Lawrence. New manager Lawrence brought in several expensive loan players, such as Zhang Enhua, Menno Willems and David Nielsen. The new signings did not amount to much though, as the Mariners only narrowly avoided relegation after a last day win over Fulham. The 2002/2002 season was to see one of Grimsby Towns most famous victory's. After knocking out local rivals Lincoln City and Sheffield United in the league cup, the club were drawn to meet Liverpool at Anfield. Grimsby held the premier league leaders to a 0-0 draw, forcing the game into extra time, and despite letting in an early goal, the club scored two goals to give Grimsby an historic victory. The club slipped down the table again, and narrowly avoided relegation. The following season was to see the collapse of ITV Digital, putting a massive strain on the clubs finances, and the Mariners were relegated at the end of the 2002/2003 season. The following season the clubs financial crisis hampered there team, and the club were forced to release several key players, notably Danny Coyne and George Santos. The club would face yet another relegation fight with Sheffield Wednesday, just as had been the case the previous season. On the last day of the season, Grimsby lost there fight to stay up and were yet again relegated. The clubs first season back in the basement division saw a relatively mediocre mid table finish. The 3005/2006 season started well for the Mariner, and the club began rising up through the league two ranks. The year would also see victory's in the league cup against Derby County Tottenham Hotspur. Sadly for the team, they failed to gain promotion after conceding a last minute goal in there final game of the season, and they were forced into a playoff match against derby rivals Lincoln City, defeating them in the playoff semi finals 3-1 on aggregate. The club had the chance to earn promotion in the playoff final against Cheltenham Town, but they lost the match 1-0 . The club began the next season with several star players departing, along with manager Russell Slade. Graham Rodger was promoted from assistant manager to manager, a move that was scorned on by the fans as it appeared the club were simply taking a cheap option. The clubs season began with high expectations after the signing of several star players, however they began poorly. The club found itself at the foot of the table early on, and the poor start had virtually destroyed any chance of promotion. In November of 2006, Graham Rodger was sacked, and the unthinkable happened when Alan Buckley returned for his third stint in charge of the club. He did not immediately kick start a revival, and the club slipped to 22nd, but with the support of the board and the supporters, the club headed up the table and achieved a mid table finish. The 2007/2008 season was relatively uneventful, however the club had a strong run in the Football League Trophy and made there way to the final at Wembley. The final however would not see any silverware, and the Mariners were beaten 2-0 by MK Dons. The league season turned rather sour for the club, and they slipped down the table at a fast rate. After a winless streak of 13 games in a row for the club, Alan Buckley was sacked in September of 2008. Former Luton Tow manager Mike Newell was signed, and helped the club avoid relegation with a 16th place finish. The clubs History is one of rises and falls, and no one knows were they are headed. With the continued support of the fans, the club has an expectation to achieve, and the Mariners must dare to dream if they are to achieve.

![]() A Message From The Editor After beginning my latest Chelsea manager mode and getting little response, i have decided that i need a change in MM writing. Big teams have a load of money, and can get boring fast. If you are bored with big team then there is no point continuing, the amount of effort required for a successful MM means that you need to be having fun whilst playing. So i have decided to make a change in direction, and take on a team with little money, no famous players, a little stadium, a team that will have to fight to become a force. Welcome To Grimsby Town FC: Dare To Dream You may now post, i sincerely hope you enjoy the thread Another Big Thanks To hales, Who Has Helped Massively To Make The Thread Possible .
