Default Man Utd 5-2 Benfica

^Rooney celebrates his hat-trick^

Manchester United have booked their place in the semi-finals of the Champions League with a 5-2 win over Benfica. The win never looked in doubt though after a 5-0 win in Portgal

Sir Alex made a few changes in the side coming into this match mainly because of the poor defensive performance against Arsenal, where they conceded 5 goals but still won the match because they scored 7.

Man United started off brightly and had a chance to grab an early goal through Nani but the Benfica keeper managed to push his shot out for a corner. The corner was a good one but Miguel Veloso headed over from it.

The Old Trafford faithful were cheering with only 16 minutes gone in the game. Miguel Veloso slid the ball through the Benfica center-backs to Rooney and he stroked the ball past the goalkeeper. His celebrations were cut short though because the linesman had his flag up and the goal was chalked off.

Even though Man United had the brighter start they hadn't settled down, their passing was poor and could have been behing because of that. Miss placed passes gave Benfica good opportunities but their strikers were poor and couldn't capilitize on the situation.

Man United did take the lead just before half time, despite this, through Rooney. He used his pace to speed past the Benfica defenders and calmly slot the ball past the keeper to give United the lead with only a few minutes remaining in the first half.

But in these few minutes, we got two more goals. Benfica responed in the best way possible, with a goal just under a minute later. Reyes crossed the ball into the box, Aimar got his head to the ball but Lloris kept the shot out. The ball only went as far as Cardoza in the six-yard box and he tapped the ball to give Benfica the equaliser.

The drama wasn't over just yet though as Man United would find a way to get another goal. Man United won a series of corners late on in the dying minutes of the first half which led to the goal. The keeper was equal to all the headers before this but he couldn't keep out Rooneys.

Carrick whipped the ball into the box, from the corner, Rooney rose above his marker and he headed the ball into the bottom corner out of the reach of the keeper.

It took a while for United to get fully into the game but in the end they started to produce some very pretty football that we come to expect from Man United.

Man United started the second half just like they ended the first. Benfica pushed forward early on looking to get some pride but whilst doing this they left a big gap at the back. Tevez received the ball in the middle of the pitch and quickly played the ball into Rooney. He saw Nani unmarked on the other wing and played the ball to him. He dribbled into the box and rolled the ball into the corner to put United 3-1 up.

Tevez sealed the win in the 66th minute. Rooney ran past the defenders and into the box. He was one-on-one with the keeper but he saw Tevez in a better position, passed the ball to him and he had the simple task of tapping the ball into an empty net.

Rooney sealed his hat-trick in the 79th minute to cap off a great performance by him. Veloso slid the ball into the box and Rooney used his pace to get their just before the keeper. He tapped the ball around the keeper and then rolled the ball into an empty net.

Martins got a late consolation goal for Benfica in the 88th minute. Cardoza took a shot and it was saved but Martins was their to follow up and give the Benfica fans something to cheer about.

Hey Shorty great to see you scoring some goals and doing well in the Champions League. I haven't been on the forums due to my computer being absolutely destroyed by a virus that is yet to be removed, so my dad has finally managed to get a loaner laptop from his company for us to use at home. I'm also sorry to say that I won't be returning to our previous agreement of producing updates for your thread, I'm currently weighing up the logistics of making my own thread.
