Carling Cup Semi Final - 2nd Leg Preview: Manchester United vs Arsenal

Form Guide: Manchester United turned it on in front their own fans at Old Trafford in the previous leg, a Giussepe Rossi hat-trick proving the difference as United ran out 5-2 winners. They then continued in their rich vein of form with a resounding 3-1 victory over eighth placed Liverpool, despite Rossi not featuring for the Red Devils. Arsenal have struggled of late, their humiliation at Old Trafford being compounded by a loss to fierce rivals Tottenham Hotspur in their most recent Premier League game. However a 5-3 victory over Fulham in the FA Cup will hopefully give them the confidence needed to overturn the 3-goal deficit to progress.

Arsenal Starting XI
Almunia
Sagna----Toure----Gallas----Taylor
Rosicky--Fabregas--Denilson--Diaby
Van Persie---Adebayor

The Gunners will have to prepare for a continual wave of attacks down the left flank which is significantly weaker without the pace of Clichy after he was sold to Guus Hiddink’s Chelsea to wipe away the clubs incurred debt from the failure of the Highbury redevelopment. However striker Robin van Persie has been in excellent form this season; putting the ball in the net 17 times so far this season. If anyone can get them out of trouble, it will be the Flying Dutchman.

Manchester United Starting XI:
Foster
Ramos----Evans---Vidic----O'Shea
Nani--Hargreaves--Anderson--Park
Rossi-----Berbatov

Despite fielding a ‘second string’ side, United showcase the incredible depth in their squad, naming Sergio Ramos, Dimitar Berbatov and Giuseppe Rossi as starters. Wingers Luis Nani and Ji-Sung Park will be expected to give trouble down the flanks whilst Hargreaves and Anderson will share the role of midfield anchor. Berbatov will use his strength up front to hopefully grab a goal or two from crosses, a tactic that proved effective in the previous leg. Rossi will be hoping to build on his hat-trick from the previous leg in his second game for the Red Devils since returning from Villareal.

Prediction: Arsene Wenger’s side have the home ground advantage, the raw brilliance of Manchester United should be enough to see them through. 3-0 United.

For last pagers

Default Arsenal 2-4 Man Utd

A Bit of R and R

^Ronaldo celebrates after scoring his penalty^

Many expected Man United to come to the Emirates and play Arsenal off the pitch like they did in the first leg. That wasn't to be the case though as Arsenal would give Man United a real run for their money.

The first half was a bit dull with Man United not really playing to their full ability. Arsenal were probaly the better team in the first half as they had the better chances, the best of them falling to Diaby and Van Persie.

Arsenal made this pressure pay just before the half-time whistle. Rosicky crossed the ball into the box for Adebayor to get on the end of it but he missed the ball. Arsenal were fortunate though because Diaby was unmarked at the back post and he volleyed the ball in from only 2 yards

Sir Alex wasn't going to watch his team play so badly any longer and with only 15 minutes gone in the second half he brought on Rooney, Ronaldo and Tevez for Berbatov, Rossi and Nani.

The change had nearly an immeadite effect on the team because only 2 minutes after he had come on, Ronaldo was brought down in the penalty area by Gallas. He got up and brushed him self down before smashing the ball into the top corner. Almunia went the right way but couldn't get his hands to it.

Man United should have took the lead in the 66th minute after a howler from Almunia. Rooney was running down the wing with the ball, he then tried his luck from around 30 yards. Almunia must not of been expecting it because all he could do was knock it down for Tevez but he managed to put the ball wide from 6 yards. There was a few defenders around him but a striker of his quality should be putting those chances away.

Man United did take the lead in the 75th minute. Rooney got his first goal since being named FIFA World Player of the Year. Almunia who was having trouble holding his shots today again could only parry Ronaldo's shot into the path of a United player and this time they made no mistake tapping the ball into the tap net from about a yard.

Just when Man United thought that they had the game won, Vidic brought down Mutu in the box. Van Persie did the honours of slotting the ball past Ben Foster.

The game wasn't over yet though and Man United managed to go ahead again. Tevez got the ball from the kick-off and, just like he has done so many times this season , he ran past the defenders into the box. The angle was against him though but somehow he managed to squeez the ball in between the front post and Almunia.

Evans added another late on in the game from a corner. Park took a short corner to Evans and many expected him to keep the ball in the corner but no, he turned his marker and ran into the box. He used some quick feet, that many people wouldn't expect from a centre-back, to get past the defenders before knocking the ball past Alumnia.

This was a good result for United but they showed some tired legs throughout that match and will need the whole squad to pitch in, in these final months of the season. Man United will play Middlesborough in the final at Wembley on the 29th of January

It wasn't just him, they were all terrible. I remember a moment where he didn't clear the ball and VdS had to make a pretty good save to keep them out. Paul Scholes made a better one though
