The Poms Finally Win It!
![]() ZURICH, SWITZERLAND: Manchester United's Wayne Rooney has been crowned the Fifa World Player of the Year in Zurich, becoming the first Englishman to do so in the Award’s history. Rooney, 25, has had a formidable year for his club, winning the Premier League and the Champions League, scoring 54 goals in the process. This trophy also completes a long-awaited coming of age for the former Everton striker, who is looking to lead his side to back-to-back Champions League titles this season. "This is an incredible moment for me, a very treasured moment," he said in his emotional acceptance speech at Zurich's Opera House. "I would like to thank my friends, my family and my team-mates. This is one of the most important moments in my life. I hope I can play well enough in the next twelve months to be back here next year." This trophy completes a clean sweep of the major individual awards for Rooney, having already won the Football Writers’ Player of the Year award, the PFA Player of the Year award, the Golden Boot, the Ballon d’Or and the FifPro World Player of the Year award; emulating teammate Cristiano Ronaldo’s efforts of 2008. The award was decided by the votes of international captains and coaches, with Rooney beating Fernando Torres (who came second), Lionel Messi of Barcelona (last year’s winner), and teammates Rio Ferdinand and Cristiano Ronaldo (third place), to the title. No Englishman has won the award since its inception in 1991, when Lothar Matthaus, of Germany and Internazionale, won the trophy. In the 21 years it has been running Gary Lineker (1991), Alan Shearer (1996), David Beckham (1999 and 2001) and Frank Lampard (2005) have all finished in either second or third. Rooney’s win is not only a recognition of his individual skill but further confirmation that the Premier League is the most powerful domestic competition in Europe, becoming the fourth Premier League player in a row to win the award, succeeding Fernando Torres, Francesc Fabregas and Cristiano Ronaldo. Rooney dedicated the award to his family but was eager to acknowledge the influence Sir Alex Ferguson has had on him. “Sir Alex has had an important role to play in my life,” he said. “Last season was an excellent one for me, my club, and the boss was important for me because I learned a lot from him. "His immense experience, after so many years, is of paramount importance and for me it’s a privilege to be able to be a part of the history of such a big club as United. Without Sir Alex I wouldn’t be here today.” Rooney also claims that United are perfectly poised to repeat their double success of last season. “We are in a great position to win the Premier League and the Champions League again. We are one of the best clubs in the world and if we play to our very best, like we did against Arsenal, we will have no trouble winning everything again.” |

Liverwho?? ![]() ^Nani seals the win for Man United^ Man United came into this game with a 28 point gap between them and Liverpool. Man United hadn't lost to Liverpool since the 5th round of the FA Cup in 2006 and since then Man United have overtaken Liverpool on league titles and are on course to equal their record of 5 European Cups. Man United started very brighlty, and took the lead inside 2 minutes. Man United took the kick-off and Tevez got the ball. He used his pace to run past the Liverpool defenders on the wing and pulled the ball back into the path of Cristiano Ronaldo. He took one touch before smashing the ball into the net from 19 yards. Liverpool were shellshocked, they hadn't even got a touch of the ball yet! Man United didn't let up and continued to push forward for a second just as they had done against Arsenal in mid-week. Scholes had a great chance to double United's lead with 15 minuts gone. Tevez pulled the ball back for him but his low drive from the edge of the box was well saved. He didn't give up though because he stood in front of Reina and blocked his kick-out before tapping the ball into an empty net. Man United were 2-0 up after 16 minutes. It nearly went from bad to worse for Liverpool in the 30th minute. Reina rolled the ball out to Carragher but Agger tried to get the ball aswell and they knocked each other over. Rooney came in but his shot came back into play off the bar. Liverpool hadn't got started yet and were in their own half for much of the first half. Gerrard lifted Liverpool's hopes with 20 minutes left when he managed to grab a goal back with Liverpool's first shot on target. The ball was whipped into the box by Reira, Evra managed to get his head to it but the ball fell to Gerrard and he placed the ball into the bottom corner. With only 5 minutes left on the clock, Sir Alex Ferguson brought on Nani and Hargreaves for Giggs and Scholes. This turned out to be a very good move indeed. Liverpool continued to push forward to try and get the equaliser in the 90th minute but in doing this left no one in defence to mind the goal. Vidic managed to head the ball out of the box and United broke with both pace and numbers. The ball eventually found it's way to Nani and he passed the ball into an empty, Liverpool net. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Team Van Der Sar(4) Neville(6), Ferdinand(8, Vidic(4), Evra(6) Ronaldo(7), Carrick(8, Scholes(6), Giggs(6) Tevez(7), Rooney(9) Subs Nani(7) Hargreaves(6) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Match Facts MU-LIV 18 - Shots - 3 16 - On Target - 1 53% - Possesion - 47% 10 - Tackles - 6 0 - Fouls - 1 0 - Yellows - 0 0 - Reds - 0 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- MOTM ![]() Rooney - 9 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Other Results Fulham 4-3 Charlton

Carling Cup Semi Final - 2nd Leg Preview: Manchester United vs Arsenal
Form Guide: Manchester United turned it on in front their own fans at Old Trafford in the previous leg, a Giussepe Rossi hat-trick proving the difference as United ran out 5-2 winners. They then continued in their rich vein of form with a resounding 3-1 victory over eighth placed Liverpool, despite Rossi not featuring for the Red Devils. Arsenal have struggled of late, their humiliation at Old Trafford being compounded by a loss to fierce rivals Tottenham Hotspur in their most recent Premier League game. However a 5-3 victory over Fulham in the FA Cup will hopefully give them the confidence needed to overturn the 3-goal deficit to progress. Arsenal Starting XI Almunia Sagna----Toure----Gallas----Taylor Rosicky--Fabregas--Denilson--Diaby Van Persie---Adebayor The Gunners will have to prepare for a continual wave of attacks down the left flank which is significantly weaker without the pace of Clichy after he was sold to Guus Hiddink’s Chelsea to wipe away the clubs incurred debt from the failure of the Highbury redevelopment. However striker Robin van Persie has been in excellent form this season; putting the ball in the net 17 times so far this season. If anyone can get them out of trouble, it will be the Flying Dutchman. Manchester United Starting XI: Foster Ramos----Evans---Vidic----O'Shea Nani--Hargreaves--Anderson--Park Rossi-----Berbatov Despite fielding a ‘second string’ side, United showcase the incredible depth in their squad, naming Sergio Ramos, Dimitar Berbatov and Giuseppe Rossi as starters. Wingers Luis Nani and Ji-Sung Park will be expected to give trouble down the flanks whilst Hargreaves and Anderson will share the role of midfield anchor. Berbatov will use his strength up front to hopefully grab a goal or two from crosses, a tactic that proved effective in the previous leg. Rossi will be hoping to build on his hat-trick from the previous leg in his second game for the Red Devils since returning from Villareal. Prediction: Arsene Wenger’s side have the home ground advantage, the raw brilliance of Manchester United should be enough to see them through. 3-0 United.
