Team Changes: The Football world was shocked when Sir Alex Ferguson announced his team before the match against Charlton and if it had gone wrong many might have been calling for his job. Ronaldo started in goal and Welbeck, Ferdinand, Lennon and Fletcher made up the defence. Vidic started on the on the Left-Wing and Nani started on the Right-Wing. Van Der Sar and Gary Neville started the match in the middle of the park. Rooney and Foster started upfront. Foster was making his 3rd appearance as a forward.

The first 30 minutes in the match was a very scrappy 30 minutes with the Man United players trying to adapt to their new positions. In the 39th minute, United took the lead. Neville picked the ball up on the half way line and dribbled past the right side of Charlton’s defence before smashing the ball across the goal into the net off the post. Charlton nearly equalised in just before half-time when McLeod cut in from the wing. He faked a shot and Ronaldo went down, he then tried to place the ball into the far corner but Ronaldo managed to scamper across the goal and get a touch to it and it went out for a corner.

Man United went into the break with a surprising 1-0 lead. They had played badly in the first 30 minutes but then grabbed a hold of the game and were quite comfortable for the last 15 minutes. Van Der Sar had done well in the middle of the park spreading the ball around the pitch like Michael Carrick or Paul Scholes and Ronaldo has played well in goal but only had to make one really good save.

Man United got more into the game the longer it went on and it was really frustrating Charlton who were expecting to win when they saw the team sheet. Gary Neville nearly gave Man United a 2-0 lead in the 55th minute when he controlled the ball with his chest, on the edge of the box before volleying it towards the bottom corner but Weaver managed to pull of a terrific save.

Ronaldo made another wonderful save in the 58th minute. Charlton played a through ball into Gray and fired a shot straight at Ronaldo but the ball fell to McLeod in the box. He took one touch but Lennon managed to tackle him but the ball ricocheted off McLeod’s knee and Ronaldo had to pull off a wonderful reflex save to keep United ahead. United quickly broke and Rooney got the ball on the half way line and used his pace to get past the defenders. He got to the edge of the box and then smashed the ball into the bottom right corner.

United had a few chances to extend their lead but couldn’t capitalise on them and the game finished 2-0. This was a risky move for Sir Alex but it paid off and United still maintain their 100% record. Inter Milan are United’s next opponents in the opening game of the Champions League
