Everton stroll to 3rd Round

Marouane Fellaini lead Everton to another easy victory as they beat Southend 4-1 in a tactical battle. The first half saw many good chances for both sides but neither could finish them off. Louis Saha had Everton's best chance when he was played in by Marouane Fellaini but his chip shot was tipped wide by Mildenhall. Dan Gosling provided a looping cross for Steven Pienaar, whose shot just went the wrong side of the right-hand post. Andy Van Der Mayde found the break-though after 43 minutes when he spun Andrew Barrett and hit the ball hard and low past Mildenhall. The lead lasted 2 minutes however because after Joseph Yobo and Jack Rodwell failed to clear, Lee Barnet crossed one in for James Walker to head home from 4 yards, Marco Amelia was dissapointed he didn't save it. Half Time and nothing seperated the Premier League side from the League One side. Early in the second half however, Louis Saha went down in the area and many players turned to look at the referee, Andrew Barrett cleared the ball, straight into Saha, the ball then bounced to Fellaini who tucked home under the keeper. Southend were desperate to get and equaliser and in their attemp to score a goal, they actually conceded. Leon Osman intercepted the short pass corner and ran 30 yards before unleashing a lofted through-ball which Saha controlled using his head and volled just over the keeper from the edge of the box. Leon Osman rounded off a superb victory by chipping the keeper from around 16 yards. Marco Amelia was dissapointed to concede a sloppy goal but possibly made the save of the season from a shot from Lee Barnet, he picked his spot and gave it 100% of his power, however, Amelia just managed to tip it onto the bar and out for a corner

Goals: Andy Van Der Mayde 43', Marouane Fellaini 50', Louis Saha 60', Leon Osman 67' ; James Walker 45'
Man of the Match : Marouane Fellaini

Cahill wraps up convincing win

Tim Cahill scored twice as Everton beat Middlesbrough 3-1 at Goodison Park. David Moyes was pleased at the win but thought it could have been a lot better. Everton started well with a series of attacks leading to some quality saves by Australian goalkeeper, Brad Jones. Yakubu's curling shot managed to sneek round Andrew Taylor, but it hit the post, it bounced across the line and hit the other post and Cahill followed up and tapped it it, but it was offside, Cahill did score after 27 minutes when Van der Meyde crossed it to the Aussie midfielder who headed it past Dave Wheater, on the line, and Brad Jones to make it 1-0. Dan Gosling was trying his best to stop Stewart Downing on the left hand side and was often catching up to him in pace and tackling him. Marouane Fellaini's shot from distance almost had David Moyes gasping for breath as it went wide from 36 yards. Middlesbrough's final attack of the half saw Afonso Alves break free, but a superb save from Marco Amelia denied the Brazilian. Soon after the break, Mikel Arteta burst through Dave Wheater and dummied a cross to fool Robert Huth, instead he pulled the ball back for Tim Cahill who slotted under Australian teammate Brad Jones. The game looked dead and burried, however when Tuncay's shot was tipped on to post and wide by Amelia, Everton started to worry and almost conceded an own goal as Neville headed the ball just past his back post from a Downing corner. Everton seccured victory with Mikel Arteta's diving header after a cross from Louis Saha. Everton were sitting back for the last minute of added time, when Joseph Yobo passed an unconvincing backpass to Amelia, however the pass wasn't strong enough and Mido got to the ball first and rolled it in for a Boro conselation goal

Goals: Tim Cahill 27' and 57', Mikel Arteta 88' ; Mido 90'
Man of the Match: Tim Cahill
