Real Madrid C.F. ![]() Founded: 1902 as "Madrid Football Club" Nicknames: Los Blancos (The Whites) Los Galácticos Los Merengues (The Meringues) Ground: Santiago Bernabéu ![]() Started: October 27, 1944 Opened: December 14, 1947 La Historia Real Madrid C.F.(then called Madrid Football Club) after Football Club Sky(1897) split up in the 1900's into the teams New Foot-Ball de Madrid and Club Español de Madrid. Club Español de Madrid then split up on the 6th of March, 1902 to create Madrid Football Club. 3 years into their introduction, Madrid C.F. won the Spanish Cup against Athletic Bilbao . Madrid C.F. then went on to win four consecutive Copa Del Rey titles. Madrid C.F. was one of the founding member of the Royal Spanish Football Federation on the 4th of January, 1909. In 1912, Mardid C.F. settled into the stadium known as the Campo de O'Donnell". 8 years later, Alfonso XIII gave the title of "Real"(Royal) to Madrid C.F., thus changing their name from Madrid C.F. to Real Madrid C.F. 1929 was when the Spanish football league was founded, and had a great run in the first edition, but lost to Athletic Bilbao meant that they would have to settle for runner-up, as F.C. Barcelona was crowned winner of the league. Real Madrid C.F. won its first league title during the 1931-1932 season, and won the league once again the following year. Santiago Bernabéu Yeste became president of Real Madrid in 1945 and rebuilt the the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium and the Ciudad Deportiva during his presidency, after the Spanish Civil War. In 1953, Santiago Bernabéu Yeste decided to sign world-class players from all over the world and became the first multinational squad in the world. In 1955, Santiago Bernabéu Yeste and Gusztáv Sebes created what is now known as the UEFA Champions League. Bernabéu helped Real Madrid C.F. establish themselves as a major force in Spanish and European football, winning the European Cup five times in a row from 1956 to 1960. After the five wins, Real Madrid C.F. were given the original European Cup and earned the right to wear the "UEFA badge of honor". Real Madrid won the European Cup again in 1966, defeating FK Partizan 1-2, with a team that were all Spanish, known as the "Ye-ye". "Ye-ye" derived from the Beatles song "She Loves You" when they sing the chorus "Yeah, Yeah, Yeah" when Real Madrid C.F. posed for Diario Marca (Spanish newspaper) in Beatles wigs. During the 1970's, Real Madrid C.F. won the League Championshup 5 times and also won 3 Spanish Cups. 1971 was when Real Madrid C.F. played the first UEFA Cup Winners' Cup against English side Chelsea F.C. and won the Cup with a score of 2-1. In 1978, Santiago Bernabéu passed away while the World Cup was being staged in Argentina. FIFA then declared 3 days of mourning during the tournament as a sign of repect. The following year Real Madrid C.F. created the Trofeo Santiago Bernabéu in memory of their former president. During the 1980's, Real Madrid C.F. began to lose their grasp in La Liga until the "Quinta del Buitre"(Vulture's Cohort; consisted of Emilio Butragueño, Manuel Sanchís, Martín Vázquez, Míchel and Miguel Pardeza) came and re-emerged Real Madrid C.F. as one of the best teams in Europe during the second half of the 1980's, as they won 2 UEFA Cups, 5 Spanish Leagues in a row, 1 Spanish Cup, and 3 Spanish Super Cups. The early 1990's was somewhat of a disasterous period as the Quinta del Buitre left Real Madrid C.F. and left the team weakened. President Lorenzo Sanz appointed Italian coach Fabio Capello, but only lasted one season. Fabio Capello and Real Madrid C.F. regained the Spanish League that season and brought in the likes of Roberto Carlos, Predrag Mijatović, Davor Šuker and Clarence Seedorf to re-enforce Raúl González, Fernando Morientes, Fernando Hierro and Fernando Redondo in the Real Madrid squad. In 1998, coach Jupp Heynckes lead Real Madrid C.F. to another European title as they defeated Juventus in the final with a single goal from Predrag Mijatović, ending their 32-year wait for a European championship. In July 2000, Real Madrid C.F. appointed Florentino Pérez as presidnet. Florentino Pérez was the one responible for building the famous "Galactico" side, with player like Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo, Luis Figo, and David Beckham. Real Madrid C.F. went on to win the UEFA Champions League in 2002 and the Spanish League in 2003, but failed to win anything for the next 3 seasons. Ramon Calderon was appointed president in the 2nd of July, 2006 and re-appointed Fabio Capello as the coach and Predrag Mijatović as the sporting director. Real Madrid C.F. then won La Liga that year, breaking their 4-year absence, but dismissed Capello as coach at the end of the season. Bernd Schuster came in to replace Capello and won La Liga that same year, during the 2007-2008 season. Records Appearences: Manuel Sanchís Hontiyuelo - 718 (1983-2001) Santillana - 643 (1971-1988) Iker Casillas - 418 (1999-Present) Goals: Alfredo di Stéfano - 307 in 396 (1953-1964) Raul Gonzalez - 301(210 in League) (1994-Present) Attendance: Officially - 83,329 for Copa del Rey. Rivalries El Clásico ![]() Real Madrid C.F. vs F.C. Barcelona El Clasico was set up as a reference to political tensions between the Castillas and the Catalans. F.C. Barcelona became more than a club (més que un club) for Catalonia because of their alleged connection with democratic ideas. There are others that regard Real Madric C.F. as the establishment club, which raised tensions between the two. The signing of Alfredo di Stéfano raised the rivalry once again as both clubs tried signing him, but eventually went to Real Madrid C.F. El Clasico was again reinforced after a controversial signing from Barcelona to Real Madrid came to be, as Luis Figo was the one that decided to leave Barcelona for Real Madrid. The two met during the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League, as Real Madrid won and then went on to win the Champions League. The rivalry is renwed on an annual basis. El Derbi madrileño ![]() Real Madrid C.F. vs Atletico Madrid Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid face off anually, as both teams are from the city of Madrid. Between 1961 and 1989, when Real dominated La Liga, only Atlético offered it any serious challenge, winning Liga titles in 1966, 1970, 1973 and 1977. In 1965, Atlético became the first team to beat Real at the Bernabéu in eight years. One memerable moment was recently in 2002 when Real Madrid won the league as they beat Atletico Madrid 4-0 to win it.
