Default Real Madrid C.F.

Real Madrid C.F.

Founded: 1902 as "Madrid Football Club"
Nicknames: Los Blancos (The Whites)
Los Galácticos
Los Merengues (The Meringues)

Ground: Santiago Bernabéu

Started: October 27, 1944
Opened: December 14, 1947

La Historia

Real Madrid C.F.(then called Madrid Football Club) after Football Club Sky(1897) split up in the 1900's into the teams New Foot-Ball de Madrid and Club Español de Madrid. Club Español de Madrid then split up on the 6th of March, 1902 to create Madrid Football Club. 3 years into their introduction, Madrid C.F. won the Spanish Cup against Athletic Bilbao . Madrid C.F. then went on to win four consecutive Copa Del Rey titles. Madrid C.F. was one of the founding member of the Royal Spanish Football Federation on the 4th of January, 1909. In 1912, Mardid C.F. settled into the stadium known as the Campo de O'Donnell". 8 years later, Alfonso XIII gave the title of "Real"(Royal) to Madrid C.F., thus changing their name from Madrid C.F. to Real Madrid C.F.

1929 was when the Spanish football league was founded, and had a great run in the first edition, but lost to Athletic Bilbao meant that they would have to settle for runner-up, as F.C. Barcelona was crowned winner of the league. Real Madrid C.F. won its first league title during the 1931-1932 season, and won the league once again the following year.

Santiago Bernabéu Yeste became president of Real Madrid in 1945 and rebuilt the the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium and the Ciudad Deportiva during his presidency, after the Spanish Civil War. In 1953, Santiago Bernabéu Yeste decided to sign world-class players from all over the world and became the first multinational squad in the world.

In 1955, Santiago Bernabéu Yeste and Gusztáv Sebes created what is now known as the UEFA Champions League. Bernabéu helped Real Madrid C.F. establish themselves as a major force in Spanish and European football, winning the European Cup five times in a row from 1956 to 1960. After the five wins, Real Madrid C.F. were given the original European Cup and earned the right to wear the "UEFA badge of honor". Real Madrid won the European Cup again in 1966, defeating FK Partizan 1-2, with a team that were all Spanish, known as the "Ye-ye". "Ye-ye" derived from the Beatles song "She Loves You" when they sing the chorus "Yeah, Yeah, Yeah" when Real Madrid C.F. posed for Diario Marca (Spanish newspaper) in Beatles wigs.

During the 1970's, Real Madrid C.F. won the League Championshup 5 times and also won 3 Spanish Cups. 1971 was when Real Madrid C.F. played the first UEFA Cup Winners' Cup against English side Chelsea F.C. and won the Cup with a score of 2-1. In 1978, Santiago Bernabéu passed away while the World Cup was being staged in Argentina. FIFA then declared 3 days of mourning during the tournament as a sign of repect. The following year Real Madrid C.F. created the Trofeo Santiago Bernabéu in memory of their former president.

During the 1980's, Real Madrid C.F. began to lose their grasp in La Liga until the "Quinta del Buitre"(Vulture's Cohort; consisted of Emilio Butragueño, Manuel Sanchís, Martín Vázquez, Míchel and Miguel Pardeza) came and re-emerged Real Madrid C.F. as one of the best teams in Europe during the second half of the 1980's, as they won 2 UEFA Cups, 5 Spanish Leagues in a row, 1 Spanish Cup, and 3 Spanish Super Cups.

The early 1990's was somewhat of a disasterous period as the Quinta del Buitre left Real Madrid C.F. and left the team weakened. President Lorenzo Sanz appointed Italian coach Fabio Capello, but only lasted one season. Fabio Capello and Real Madrid C.F. regained the Spanish League that season and brought in the likes of Roberto Carlos, Predrag Mijatović, Davor Šuker and Clarence Seedorf to re-enforce Raúl González, Fernando Morientes, Fernando Hierro and Fernando Redondo in the Real Madrid squad. In 1998, coach Jupp Heynckes lead Real Madrid C.F. to another European title as they defeated Juventus in the final with a single goal from Predrag Mijatović, ending their 32-year wait for a European championship.

In July 2000, Real Madrid C.F. appointed Florentino Pérez as presidnet. Florentino Pérez was the one responible for building the famous "Galactico" side, with player like Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo, Luis Figo, and David Beckham. Real Madrid C.F. went on to win the UEFA Champions League in 2002 and the Spanish League in 2003, but failed to win anything for the next 3 seasons.

Ramon Calderon was appointed president in the 2nd of July, 2006 and re-appointed Fabio Capello as the coach and Predrag Mijatović as the sporting director. Real Madrid C.F. then won La Liga that year, breaking their 4-year absence, but dismissed Capello as coach at the end of the season. Bernd Schuster came in to replace Capello and won La Liga that same year, during the 2007-2008 season.

Rivalries

El Clásico

Real Madrid C.F. vs F.C. Barcelona

El Clasico was set up as a reference to political tensions between the Castillas and the Catalans. F.C. Barcelona became more than a club (més que un club) for Catalonia because of their alleged connection with democratic ideas. There are others that regard Real Madric C.F. as the establishment club, which raised tensions between the two.

The signing of Alfredo di Stéfano raised the rivalry once again as both clubs tried signing him, but eventually went to Real Madrid C.F. El Clasico was again reinforced after a controversial signing from Barcelona to Real Madrid came to be, as Luis Figo was the one that decided to leave Barcelona for Real Madrid. The two met during the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League, as Real Madrid won and then went on to win the Champions League. The rivalry is renwed on an annual basis.

El Derbi madrileño

Real Madrid C.F. vs Atletico Madrid

Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid face off anually, as both teams are from the city of Madrid. Between 1961 and 1989, when Real dominated La Liga, only Atlético offered it any serious challenge, winning Liga titles in 1966, 1970, 1973 and 1977. In 1965, Atlético became the first team to beat Real at the Bernabéu in eight years. One memerable moment was recently in 2002 when Real Madrid won the league as they beat Atletico Madrid 4-0 to win it.

Height:5’7” / 1,74 cm
Nationality: Spanish
Previous Club: Celta Vigo

Michel Salgado has been key in his early years with Real Madrid that was successful in caputuring the UEFA Champions League in 2000 and 2002. Although great then, at 33, Salgado must feel that he still a key part of Real Madrid, since his introduction in 1999

The Sevilla-born Madridsta is back at Real Madrid after a successful Euro 2008 where Spain captured the trophy and the "Best Team" in Europe. Since signing for Real Madrid, he has won Gold twice. Can Sergio Ramos complete the hat-trick?

Fabio Cannavaro

Kit Number: 5
Date of Birth:13/09/1973
Weight:165 lbs / 75 kg
Height:5’7” / 176 cm
Nationality:Italian
Previous Club: Juventus F.C.

The 2006 FIFA World Player of the Year returns to Madrid after Italy was knocked out of the Euro 2008 by none other than the same country he plays at club level, Spain. Probably one of the best defenders in the world, Cannavaro, at 35 years old, will have no trouble helping Real Madrid to a third title, if he can avoid injury.

Marcelo

Date of Birth:12/05/1988
Weight:160 lbs / 73 kg
Height:5’7” / 174 cm
Nationality:Brazilian
Previous Club: Fluminense F.C

The highly-rated 20-year old Brazilian defender is in his second year in Madrid and has already tasted glory. Now Marcelo will have to fight for a starting place in the 1st team against Heinze. The left-winger will prove decisive as his speed and trickery can be useful in tight spots.

Date of Birth:18/05/1981
Weight:167 lbs / 76 kg
Height:6’0” / 183 cm
Nationality:Malian
Previous Club: Olyimpique Lyonnais

2 seasons at Madrid and dwindling appearences might hint Diarra away from Real Madrid. Diarra will have to prove his worth the season if he is to stay. The anchor midfielder will surley not dissapoint Madrid this season.

Roysten Ricky Drenthe

Kit Number: 15
Date of Birth:08/04/1987
Weight:147 lbs. / 67 kg.
Height:5’7” / 1.67 m.
Nationality: Dutch
Previous Club: Feyenoord Rotterdam

The 21-year old Dutch international came in last year, and like Marcelo, has already tasted glory. Now after an unsuccessful Olympic Games at China, Drenthe will have to clear his mind of the loss and help Madrid win their 3rd title in a row.

Javi Garcia

Kit Number: 24
Date of Birth:28/01/1986
Weight:172 lbs / 78 kg Height:6'1" / 186 cms
Nationality:Spanish
Previous Club: CA Osasuna

Javi Garcia comes to Real Madrid with big expectations as he re-signed from Osasuna. The second chance could be what Garcia will be looking for if he is to impress Madrid, surely he caught their eye if Real Madrid decided to re-sign the Spanish midfielder.

Fernando Gago

Kit Number: 8
Date of Birth:14/04/1986
Weight:152 lbs / 69 kg
Height:5’8” / 178 cm
Nationality: Argentine
Previous Club: Boca Juniors

Fernando Gago gave an impressive performance last season as he replaced Diarra at the heart of the defence. Now Returning from achieving the Gold Medal at the Olyimpic Games in Beijing, Gago will surley be 100% at winning La Liga once again with Madrid.

Arjen Robben

Kit Number: 11
Date of Birth:23/01/1984
Weight:165 lbs / 75 kg
Height:5’9” / 181 cm
Nationality: Dutch
Previous Club: Chelsea F.C.

Returning from the Euro 2008, Robben is 100% fit and ready to help Madrid to another league title. An impressive performance, especially against France, could continue to flow in the this season's title race, which is what Real Madrid need.

Guti Hernandez

Kit Number: 14
Date of Birth:31/10/1976
Weight:168 lbs / 76 kg
Height:6’1” / 185 cm
Nationality:Spanish
Previous Club: N/A

The Real Madrid vice-captain if finding his years are catching up to him. Although 32, Guti can still pack a punch in the midfield. 12 years at Madrid, and Guti still has a lot to give, but can he survive against the younger generation of Madristas?

Ruben De la Red

Kit Number: 18
Date of Birth:28/01/1986
Weight:174 lbs / 79 kg
Height:6'1" / 186 cms
Nationality:Spanish
Previous Club: Getafe C.F.

Ruben De la Red returns to Real Madrid after an impressive season with Getafe C.F. De la Red also won the Euro 2008 as he was picked for the team and even scored a goal against Greece on the final day of the group stage, which Spain won 2-1. Now De la Red is surley ready for a new season, and will fight to stay at Madrid for a longer time this time around.

Wesley Sneijder

Kit Number 10
Date of Birth:09/06/1984
Weight:148 lbs / 67 kg
Height:5'6" / 170 cm
Nationality: Dutch
Previous Club: AFC Ajax

An impressive performance in the Euro 2008 that ended against Russia was enough for Sneijder to get ready for the new season. Starting this season with the number 10, after Robinho's departure to Manchester City, might give Sneijder confidence to give his best performance yet.

Rafael Van der Vaart

Kit Number: 23
Date of Birth:28/01/1986
Weight:63 lbs / 74 kg
Height:5'9" / 175 cm
Nationality: Dutch
Previous Club: Hamburg SV

Came from Hamburg SV to re-enforce the midfield and replace Robinho, who left Real Madrid for Manchester City. A €13 million price-tag is alot for Van der Vaart to live up to, but the Dutch midfielder will surley impress.

Real Madrid Squad

Forwards

Raúl González

Kit Number: 7
Date of Birth: 27/06/1977
Weight: 149 lbs / 68 kg
Height: 5’11” / 180 cm
Nationality: Spain
Previous Club: N/A

14 years at Real Madrid and Raúl still has the power to change games. Recently won the first edition of the Trofeo Alfredo Di Stéfano,
in which he was named the player in the Spanish League. Raúl now has his eyes set on winning La Liga three times in a row, and making history with Real Madrid. The 'Angel of Madrid' still has the power.

Javier Saviola

Kit Number: 9
Date of Birth: 11/12/1981
Weight: 134 lbs / 61 kg
Height: 5'5" / 168 cm
Nationality: Argentine
Previous Club: F.C. Barcelona

A lack of appearences last season could have hinted that he would move away from Real Madrid, but Saviola has stayed in search for a 1st team place. Saviola has had a summer to think about his future, and will have to act fast.

Ruud Van Nistelrooy

Kit Number: 17
Date of Birth: 01/07/1976
Weight: 176 lbs / 80 kg
Height: 6’2” / 188 cm
Nationality: Dutch
Previous Club: Manchester United F.C.

Returning from his last game with the Netherlands National team, Van Nistelrooy will proved desicive for Real Madrid in the attack. Van Nistelrooy will no doubt go for the Pichichi trophey this year once again, as he earned it in his first year at Madrid.

Gonzalo Higuaín

Kit Number: 20
Date of Birth: 10/12/1987
Weight: 165 lbs / 75 kg
Height: 6’0” / 184 cm
Nationality: Argentine/French
Previous Club: Club Atletico River Plate

Higuaín has been crucial for Real Madrid's success in capturing La Liga last year, and will be no different this season. As he gears up for the new season, many might believe he could replace Van Nistelrooy this season and could be the top goal scorer, as his form last year could be surpassed this year.

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar

Kit Number: 19
Date of Birth: 12/08/1983
Weight: 176 lbs / 80 kg
Height: 6'1" / 186 cm
Nationality: Dutch
Previous Club: AFC Ajax

The Ajax goal machine comes to Real Madrid to re-enforce the attack. Huntelaar is the chosen replacement if Van Nistelrooy departs. A lot of pressure will be on the Dutch forward, but Huntelaar is sure to score with Madrid.

Nice picture of the stadium, but I had better not go on Wikipedia and see all of that information waiting for me....

Thank for the warning FCB. I was aware many people failed at the attempt, but I will try to make it realistic and INTERESTING as I have tried with my Hoffenheim thread.

And as for Hoffenheim thread, I will do both, but will concentrate more on Madrid in the comming Months. Hoffenheim will still be up!

GK updated.
There seems to be something wrong with the pictures. I'll go back and replace them.
