Default Manchester United - Title Challengers

Name: Manchester United
Nickname: The Red devils
Founded: 1878 as Newton Heath
Owner: Malcolm Glazer
Co-Chairman: Joel and Avram Glazer
Manager: Alex Ferguson
Captain: Gary Neville
League: Barclays Premier League
Stadium: Old Trafford

History

Manchester United have had rich success since they were founded. In 1945 Matt Busby took over as manager, and years later, he created the Busby Babes. They had an average age of only 22, when they won the league in the 1955-56 season. But on the 6th of February, disaster struck, for the whole of Manchester. Manchester United were playing Red Star Belgrade in Belgrade, in the UEFA Champions League, in a return leg. They drew the match 3-3. The take off from Belgrade was delayed as United outside right, Johnny Berry lost his Passport. After that, the plane had to make a scheduled stop at Munich for refuelling. when it had done, the plane took off, but it skidded off the end of the runway, and crshed into a fence surrounding the airport. It also hit a tree, a house and a Nissen hut. 21 people on board died instantly, and Duncan Edwards died a few days later in hospital.

United hit the top in the 60's with players such as Dennis Law, Bobby Charlton and George Best. United won the UEFA Champions League in 1968. they faced Benfica at Wembley in the final. United's defence faced the task of keeping Eusebio quiet, and they succeeded. Bobby Charlton opened the scoring for United before Jamie Graca equalised for the Portugese side. The game went to extra-time, and scored 3 goals in the last 30 minutes. Goals from George Best, Brian Kidd and another goal from Bobby Charlton gave The Red Devils the championship.

Alex Ferguson became manager in 1986, only a few hours after former manager Ron Atkinson was sacked. He became one of English Football's greatest and most succesful managers. His greatest season though, was the 1998-99 season, in which United won the treble. They won the Premier League, The FA Cup and The UEFA Champions League, and from December to the end of the season, they were unbeaten. They had a reputation of scoring late goals and turning reults around late on. In the 4th round of the FA Cup, they were behind to Liverpool, from the 3rd to the 85th minute. Dwight Yorke and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer scored in the final 4 minutes to give United the win. They got to the final, and they played Newcastle United. Goals from Teddy Sheringham and Paul Scholes gave them the Cup and a 2-0 win. In the Premiership, United edged out Arsenal by a single point to win the title. But the Champions League was the biggest feat, and the Final was unbelieveable. The scene was the nou Camp, and it was only fitting for the 2 best club teams in the world to play at the best stadium in the world. Bayern took the lead in the 6th minute, when Mario Basler swept in a low free-kick, which curled into the bottom corner. In Injury Time, as the fourth official held up his board for 3 minutes of stoppage time, Beckham flighted in a corner, and yorke flicked the ball on with his head, and Thorsten Fink cleared the ball, but only to Ryan Giggs, but his shot from the edge of the box was poorly struck and it just trickled into the box, but Teddy Sheringham knocked the ball into the net to equalise in injury time, not for the first time that season. 30 seconds after the kick-off, United won another corner, and Beckham hit it in, and Sheringham nodded it down, and Solskjaer toepoked it into the roof of the Bayern net. Nobody could believe it, but it was reality, and United had just won the Champions League

Over recent years, United have become a dominant force over the past few years, winning the Premiership for the past 2 years, and defeating Chelsea in Moscow on penalties to win their 3rd Champions League trophy. Dominance has certainly helped by good signings, including Cristianio Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand and Carlos Tevez. Ferguson may retire at the end of the season, as some newspapers are reporting, but Ferguson will never be forgotten.

FERGIE TO RETIRE AT END OF SEASON

Earlier today, Sir Alex Ferguson told us that he will retire at the end of the season. It will mark the end of a 23 year glittering career at Old Trafford, since taking over in 1986 from Ron Atkinson. Ferguson is an icon to English Football. He won the Premier League 10 times, the FA Cup 5 times and won the Champions League twice. He also had a successful playing career, making 327 appearances, playing as striker scoring 167 goals for clubs like, Queens Park, St Johnstone, Dunfermiline Athletic, Rangers, Falkirk and Ayr United

He told us earlier today.

"Manchester United are a great club, but i feel now is the right time to retire. I would love to manage them forever. They gave me everything that I needed, but now, as I reach my 70's, I have given up on managing. I now need to settle down and let the season roll ahead and hopefully, we can match the treble I won in 1999. We, the team have the capability to beat anyone, but the players can't feel down about this. There is lots of other managers out there better than me, so they just need to get on with the season"

SUPERSTARS ADLER AND RAMOS JOIN UNITED

Today, Manchester United brought 2 big money signings to the club. The first, was young goalkeeper Rene Adler. Adler had been on the transfer list at Bayer Leverkusen for a month, but several clubs wouldn't pay the £11,000,000 asking price. United however came in with that offer, and he arrived at Old Trafford yesterday to finalise terms. the other signing was Sergio Ramos. The right-back was unsettled at Real Madrid, an asked for a move away. His wish was granted, and he joined for £16,500,000.

United also dealt with other clubs for their players. Tomasz Kuszczak has offloaded to Auxerre for £1,400,000. Kuszczak was unhappy when he was told he would be 4th choice keeper, behind Rene Adler, Edwin van der Sar and Ben Foster. John O'Shea was also offloaded to cash-strapped Watford for £2,000,000. Another player who was told they would hardly get any playing time this season, O'Shea acted quickly to make his move, and Watford was the best option

AGUERO SHOCKS EVERYONE AND SIGNS FOR UNITED

Sergio Aguero shocked almost all of the world last night on Deadline Day, as he opted for a move away from Spain. Athletico Madrid's Spokesperson said last night. "We had multiple offers for Sergio on deadline day. He had offers from, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Sevilla, Inter Milan, AC Milan, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchetser United, Manchester City, Lyon and Bayern Munich. Last week, Sergio said he wanted to stay in Spain, but changed his mind when he saw all of the offers. When his agent got back to him with the contracts, he cut the list down to 4, Manchester United, Barcelona, Manchester City and AC Milan. Then, in the afternoon, he made the decision he would join Manchester United. He flew over to England to have a medical, and signed just before the window shut, for £30,000,000."

Shockwaves were spread around England, but more in Spain. Madrid's fans made a gathering outside the Vincente Calderon, and started shouting insults about Aguero, saying he was a money grabbing *******! Manchester United fans though, were suprised and overjoyed that one of the most promising players in the world had joined them. Word spread about the move, and a bundle of fans were waiting outside Old Trafford, waiting for the move to be confirmed. When it was, Aguero went outside, and started signing autographs, which will infuriate Athletico's fans even more.

United have also sent a few players on loan, and sold a midfielder. Scottish midfielder Darren Fletcher has moved form the Red Devils to Rangers for £2,900,000. Fletcher didn't get many run ins for the first-team, as he mainly made subsitute appearances. United have also sent youngsters Federico Macheda and Tom Cleverley to Hibernian and Chesterfield respectively

I don't kniw. I just had a lot of money left, and wanted to grip the readers so I should buy a world class superstar. was thinking of selling berbatov but that would be unrealistic and Tevez I tried to sell, but nobody came in for him

That's odd. Any player you put up for sale is supposed to have a bid by the end of the transfer window. I mean, I even sold Quashie!

Why would you sell Neville? This thread is unrealistic already. Ramos and Aguero in one window, and Neville leaving....

MAN UNITED SCRAPE A DRAW IN A 6 GOAL THRILLER

GK: Adler
RB: Ramos
CB: Ferdinand
CB: Vidic
LB: Evra
RM: Ronaldo
CM: Carrick
CM: Anderson
LM: Giggs
ST: Rooney
ST: Aguero

Manchester United escaped Old Trafford with a 3-3 draw against Newcastle United. Many confident United fans thought it would be another routine victory for them, but Newcastle took the game to them.

Newcastle opened the scoring on 8 minutes. Michael Carrick tried a pass back to goalkeeper Rene Adler, but it was too short, and before Rio Ferdinand could get to it, Obafemi Martins took the ball away from him and chipped it over Adler to mae it 1-0. It was the worst possible start for United. Anderson made United fans wait even longer for a goal. Wayne Rooney did all of the hard work, and layed it off to Anderson, who strode a few yards into the box with the ball, but the shot was miles off target. On 28 minutes, United equalised from a counter attack. Damien Duff whipped in a corner for Newcastle, and Sergio Ramos volleyed it away. Sergio Aguero was just before the half-way line when he recieved the ball, and he made a mad dash towards goal. He beat Habib Beye and Fabricio Coloccini before striking the ball with his left-foot from the edge of the box to send United fans wild. A goal on his debut certainly made United fans feel proud of him. The level scoreline only lasted for 7 minutes, as Martins capitalised on another Carrick error, and nutmegged Vidic before curling it around Adler to make it 2-1.

The start of the second half was lively, as 4 minutes in and United were back on level terms. Aguero beat Coloccini on the left, and crossed the ball in for Wayne Rooney, and the Scouser hit a half-volley on the byline. No-one in the world could score an effort from that angle, but Rooney curled it round Given, leaving everyone in the United stands gasping for air. 2-2. Straight from kick-off, however, and United were down to 10 men. Martins made another jinking run forward, but Ferdinand blocked his path towards goal, but, the small hitman somehow got the ball back, but Carrick, in all of his stupidity, stuck out a leg. He was the last man, so he knew he was off. Damien Duff hit the free-kick from 20 yards, which dipped over the wall, leaving Adler stranded in the middle of his net. United pegged the game back for the 3rd time 8 minutes later. Rio Ferdinand jogged forward, 40 yards out from goal. He played a through ball for Cristiano Ronaldo, and he broke the offside trap to make it 3-3. United had 2 chances to win the game in the end. One coming from Aguero, but he hit his shot miles over the bar, and Rooney's header from Fabio's cross was well saved by Given.

"We deserved more out of the game." Sir Alex Ferguson told us after the game. "we created the chances, but couldn't finish them. We have lots of world-class players who can score all day, but there luck just turned on it's head today. Newcastle played well though, and Martins was lethal."
