HISTORY
Portsmouth Football Club was founded in April 1898 by a group of business and sportsmen including the club’s first chairman John Brickwood. The club was founded as Portsmouth Football and Athletic Company Limited with the other founding members being George Oliver, Alfred Bone, John Peters and William Wigginton. Formed from the ashes of the disbanded Royal Artillery team, Portsmouth’s first manager was the experienced Frank Brettell. Pompey joined the Southern League and played its first match on the 2nd of December 1899 away at Chatham resulting in a 1-0 win. The club would play its first home match at Fratton Park three days later meeting rivals Southhampton in a friendly.

In their first season Portsmouth won 20 of its 28 league matches finishing as runners up in the league. The club would claim its first Southern League Title in the 1901-02 season with club captain Bob Blyth acting as player manager. In 1906-07 a visit from Manchester United in the English Cup set a new record attendance at Fratton Park with 24,329 fans watching Pompey play a 2-2 draw with the much favoured Manchester squad. The draw meant a replay at Manchester, where Portsmouth managed a 2-1 win.Two seasons later a record attendance of 27,825 was set when Sheffield Wednesday visited Fratton Park in the new FA Cup.

The 1910-11 season saw Pompey relegated to the second division of the Southern League and Robert Brown from Sheffield Wednesday appointed as manager. Although the club were immediately re-promoted the following season, Portsmouth were facing a financial crisis with numerous debts beginning to pile up. The solution was to cease the original club’s business and reform under ‘Portsmouth City Football Club Limited’ formed in 1911. This was just what the club needed with ‘the Father of Pompey’ Mr G L Oliver putting his own personal fortune on the line acting as guarantor ensuring the bank Portsmouth were on the road to recovery.

Due to the first World War, football was suspended, when the Southern League recommenced Portsmouth won their second league title, around this time the club looked to secure a position in the National Football League. In 1920 the club were elected into the newly formed 3rd division of the National Football League. Under new manager John McCartney, Pompey finished 12th in its first season in the 3rd division, this was not good enough for McCartney who had his eyes set on the 2nd division. In the 1923-24 season his dreams were realised when Portsmouth finished top of the 3rd division table.

The 1926-27 season saw Portsmouth promoted to the elite first division after claiming the spot on the last day of the season. Portsmouth become the first southern team to make it into the top division and the first club to make the climb from the 3rd division. The 1928-29 season saw Pompey struggle with relegation in the league but a exceptional run in the FA Cup ended in a historic first final appearance for the club. The final was won by Bolton coming away with a 2-0 win.
The 1930’s saw Pompey establish themselves in the First Division and in the 1930-31 season finshed in fourth place. Another FA Cup finals appearance in 1933-34 saw Pompey face Manchester City at Wembley, again it wasn’t to be Portsmouth’s day losing 2-1. In the 1938-39 season, Portsmouth would finally hold the FA Cup triumphantly after beating a highly regarded Wolves team to claim the cup on their third attempt. The Second World War interrupted football once again and Pompey took the dubious record of holding the FA Cup for the longest period.

The war disrupted football for several years with the 1946-47 season being the first season of truly competitive football. Bob Jackson was appointed as manager guiding Portsmouth to a respectable 8th place finish in his first season in charge. The 1948-49 season was the club’s jubilee birthday and club Chairman Mr R Vernon Stokes called for the anniversary to be marked by winning the League Championship. Pompey made a superb start to the season winning 6 of their 7 opening matches. A cup match against Derby County broke the attendance record at Fratton Park with 51,385 fans seeing Portsmouth defeat Derby 2-1. On the brink of claiming the league and cup double Portsmouth faltered in the cup final losing to Leicester City 3-1. Pompey made up for this disappointment by claiming their first, First Division League Title, a feat they repeated the next season, winning the championship on goal average on the last day of the season.

Portsmouth solidified their place in the 1st Division in the early 50’s but slowly slid down the ladder as the players who won the title two years running began to age. Pompey were relegated after a poor 1958-59 season, losing 20 out of their last 24 matches finishing on 21 points for the season.

Portsmouth’s bad fortune continued in the 60’s with the club returning to Division 3 of the National Football League after 37 years. George Smith was appointed manager and stabilised the club gaining promotion back to the 2nd division on his first attempt. The 60’s also saw the the retirement of club legend Jimmy ****inson, the faithful ****inson played 764 matches for Pompey with Swindon Town’s John Trollope the only man to have played more games for a single club playing 770 matches from 1960-1980. Portsmouth fans had to settle for mid table finishes during most of the 60’s and in ****inson’s final season at the club were a match away from relegation, drawing with Northampton on the final day of the season, the point from the match enough to keep them in the second division and allowing the club to send ****inson off on a semi-successful note. ****inson would go on to work at the club in various capacities right up to his untimely death in 1982.

The 70’s did not improve for Portsmouth with the club relegated twice to find themselves in the 4th division, despite Southampton businessman John Deacon purchasing the club and promising to get Pompey back into the First Division within three years. Big signings failed to impact on the squad and a number of managers failed in their attempts to lead the club out of the doldrums. Club legend Jimmy ****inson who had served as Club Secretary and Public Relations Officer since retiring as a player was given the task of reviving the hopes of the once formidable club. A run that saw Pompey once again push for promotion ended in tragedy when Jimmy ****inson suffered a massive heart attack and could not return as manager. The shock of the incident taking its toll on the squad who finished 7th.

The 80’s saw a resurgence in Pompey’s fortunes, the club fighting it’s way back into the first division firstly under the control of Frank Burrows who managed to get the club back in the third division. Secondly with Bobby Campbell at the helm and finally Alan Ball who endured three roller-coaster seasons to finally give Chairman John Deacon his dream and take Portsmouth back to the first division. Unfortunately this success was short lived as Portsmouth were relegated straight back to the second division that season. Former Queens Park Ranger’s manager Jim Gregory would have a bid for the club accepted by John Deacon in 1988.

The 90’s saw Portsmouth evade relegation on more than one occasion, as the club faced the prospect of going into receivership before Milan Mandaric saved the club with a last minute take over bid. A self made millionaire Mandaric promised to take the club back to top of English football. Harry Redknapp took over as manager in 2002 and took Portsmouth back to the first division. Alexandre ***damak would become sole owner of the club in July 2006 after buying a stake of the club 6 months earlier.

In 2008 Portsmouth reached the FA Cup Final for the first time since 1939, going on to win 1-0 against Cardiff City.

I only got to see highlights so can't really comment Belhadj is usually a left back but can play on the wing.
