![]() ![]() CLUB NEWS Adams: ‘I don’t want top job.’ Tony Adams has stated that he is not ready to be Pompey manager, after mentor Harry Redknapp left the club last week to join North Londoners, Tottenham Hotspur. Adams hopes to continue on as assistant manager at Fratton Park but has played down any suggestions of taking the top job at the club. ‘Any talk of me taking the managers job at Portsmouth is just pure speculation’ Adams said ‘I’m happy with the assistants role and will be hoping to hold on to that when the new manager is announced. Peter Storrie and I have discussed the managers position and he knows where I stand. For me to stand here and say I’m ready to take over as manager, would be an insult to the long list of great manager’s Portsmouth has had over the years and that is something I will not do.’ Adams has also belittled the rumours suggesting he will join Harry Redknapp at Tottenham, saying doing so would go against the club where his heart lies, that being Arsenal. Adams played out his whole career at the North London Club and is rumoured to be on a long list of potential future managers, when Arsene Wenger finally parts ways with the club. For the time being it would seem Adams future at Portsmouth is secure with Chairman Peter Storrie adamant the former defender will remain on the coaching staff as assistant manager, no matter who the top job goes to. Portsmouth will now have the arduous task of finding a suitable manager before the start of the Premier League season in 6 weeks. For the interim Tony Adams will have control of the squad in its warm up to the season ahead, including a pre-season a tour of Holland, where the team will come up against fierce competition in AZ Alkmaar, Feyenoord, PSV Eindhoven and Ajax. ![]() ![]() WHO WILL BE POMPEY’S NEW MAIN MAN??? With just over a month to go before Portsmouth get their 2008-09 season underway with the Charity Shield match against Man Utd, the question many are asking is who will be Portsmouth’s new manager? With Tony Adams ruling himself out of the running for the top job, a number of suitable replacements have been linked to take over Harry Redknapp’s former post. Amongst the names linked with the club are former Inter boss Roberto Mancini, former Pompey forward Guy Whittingham, Celitc boss Gordon Strachan and the man Redknapp replaced at Tottenham, Juande Ramos. Roberto Mancini was linked with Championship club Queens Park Rangers, before his representative played down the talk with a harsh statement for QPR fans, stating he had no intention of coaching a side not involved in top flight football. This could be a good sign for Portsmouth who have come off a relatively good season finishing 8th in the league and claiming the FA Cup, for the second time in club history, the first coming in 1939. Mancini would be a huge boost for Portsmouth who will be looking to continue on from their form from last season. A proven professional, Mancini can claim the title of Inter’s best manager of the last 30 years, claiming 3 Serie A titles, two Coppa Italia and two Supercoppa Italiana trophies. Unfortunately his failure to perform in the UEFA Champions League resulted in his eventual sacking, with Jose Mourinho taking over at Inter. Mancini has been very public about his desire to manage a team in the Premier League and was also linked with the vacant manager’s position at West Ham earlier this year, the role eventually going to Giafranco Zola. Portsmouth owner Alexandre Gadamak will have to tap into his back pocket if he hopes to sign Mancini, his performance over the past seasons will guarantee him a hefty salary, one that may be out of the reach of Pompey. Whilst lacking the same class of coaching ability as the other names linked with the club, Guy Whittingham is a club hero and will be a favourite with Pompey fans. A late start to his career as a player saw Whittingham take the field at the age of 24 for Yeovil Town before joining Portsmouth in 1989, playing 160 games in his first of 3 stints at the club managing to score 88 goals in the process. Playing for a number of other clubs during his career Whittingham managed to notch up 401 appearances scoring 156 goals. As a manager Whittingham has had the misfortune of seeing two clubs run into financial trouble, he is currently a coach at Eastleigh FC. The step up to Portsmouth will be a huge leap back into the footballing limelight for the man known at Fratton Park as ‘Corporal Punishment’ and with the other names linked with the club it would seem the only way Whittingham will find himself in the manager’s seat will be if Alexandre Gadamak and Peter Storrie have lost their minds. Celtic manager, Gordon Strachan has played down any talk about him leaving Celtic, but the Scotsman is yet to extend his contract with the Scottish club and many believe he is considering a move to the Premier League, to challenge long time rival Sir Alex Ferguson, in a league he has ruled for the majority of twenty years. Strachan has led his beloved Celtics to three consecutive Scottish championships and is said to be looking for a new challenge, despite his constant statements suggesting otherwise. Having played and managed for teams in England including Portsmouth’s rivals in Southampton, Strachan would be more than capable of taking on the role at Portsmouth. A pure Scottish fighter, Strachan will bring his aggressive attacking style to Pompey, and his rivalry with Sir Alex could work well to Pompey’s advantage. Having knocked back an offer to manage Portsmouth in the past, which many believed to be solely based on the fact he managed Southampton previously, sees Strachan as an outsider in the race for Pompeys top job. The unlucky Juande Ramos, who felt the wrath of a poor season with Tottenham was quick to express his desire to remain in England after being sacked by Daniel Levy. Despite his poor season with Tottenham, many still believe Ramos has what it takes to be a force in the Premier League, with his supporters suggesting other factors at Tottenham were to blame for the clubs poor performances. Having claimed 2 UEFA Cup Titles with Sevilla, Ramos displays the experience that Peter Storrie will be looking for in a leader to take Pompey on to the European football stage. Ramos is held in high regard by many footballers, with many wanting to play under him. A factor that Pompey’s board members will surely take into consideration. The ability to draw big name players to the club will be a huge benefit for Portsmouth who showed last year they are on the verge of becoming a team capable of challenging for the Premier League title. |

![]() ![]() REDKKNAPP TRIGGERS PLAYER EXODUS AT POMPEY. Harry Redknapp’s defection to North Londoners Tottenham Hotspur, has seen a number of big names at Portsmouth apply for a transfer away from last seasons FA Cup winners. Sol Campbell is the biggest name to make the list, he has seen interest from a number of clubs including struggling Spanish giants Valencia and the promoted Hull City. Other squad members that should find new clubs before the start of the Premier League season include Hermann Hreidarsson, David Nugent, Jamie Ashdown, Glen Little, Martin Cranie and Noe Paramot. Redknapp has urged these players to reconsider their prospective moves, stating he hoped that his decision to leave Pompey would not affect the club in such a dramatic way. Caretaker manager, Tony Adams and Portsmouth Chairman Peter Storrie have both been quoted as saying the number of players that have applied for a transfer will help them make crucial decisions on the starting eleven a lot easier, with a number of players able to fill in the positions that will be left by the departing players. Both men agreeing they will not stand in the way of any one wanting to leave the club. Adams has also not ruled out making a move of his own on the transfer market, with Chairman Storrie throwing his full support behind the caretaker manager. With veteran defenders Sol Campbell and Noe Paramot on the list of players leaving the club, Adams will definitely look to strengthen his defence. While remaining tight lipped about possible transfer targets, rumours surrounding a number of big players linked to the club have surfaced including a possible move for Roma’s Phillepe Mexes, with Portsmouth owner Alexandre Gadamak confirming he will inject another £30 million into the club’s transfer budget. On the topic of appointing their new manager, Portsmouth Chairman Peter Storrie has released a statement saying a decision will be made after Portsmouth’s pre-season tour of Holland, with the man to succeed Harry Redknapp to be unveiled 2 weeks before Portsmouth meet last season’s Premier and Champions League title holders, Manchester United in the Community Shield final. |

![]() PORTSMOUTH 4, HOLLAND 0. Portsmouth have returned from a successful tour of Holland, coming away with a whitewash of the best Holland has to offer with convincing wins in their four matches agianst AZ Alkmaar, Feyenoord, PSV Eindhoven and Ajax. With Tony Adams in charge of the boys, Portsmouth got off to a good start with a 4-1 win over AZ Alkmaar. Peter Crouch and Jermaine Defoe looking fantastic in their first match as strike partners both amongst the goals. With Sol Campbell now almost certain to leave the club, being left out of the travelling squad David James was given the captain’s armband and played a vital role in the three matches he took part in, making some fantastic saves and rallying his troops to a run of great wins. The second match against Feyenoord saw Armand Traore and Jean Francois Cristophe score on debut for the club sealing a 2-0 win for Pompey and going into the 2 final matches with PSV and Ajax with a boost of confidence. The match against PSV saw Peter Crouch score his first hat trick for the club, a feat he accomplished with some great solo play, his height and strength to much for the PSV defence to handle. Not to be outdone Jermaine Defoe would put three past Ajax keeper Maarten Stekelenburg to finish with 6 goals in the pre-season tour, looking in great form just weeks out from the kick off of the Premier League season. CLUB NEWS
![]() AND THEN THERE WERE 2. Portsmouth’s hunt for a new manager has become a two horse race, with Juande Ramos and Guy Whittingham dropping out of contention for the top job. Ramos who was replaced by Harry Redknapp at Tottenham stated that while he was still interested in remaining in England, he believed Portsmouth was not the right club for him to become part of and will return to Spain where it is rumoured he will rejoin Sevilla as a technical director. Whittingham never considered himself in the race for Pompey’s top job and was not shocked by the news his application for the role was turned down. While not reaching his ultimate goal, Whittingham may find himself a role within the coaching team at Portsmouth with Chairman Peter Storrie suggesting it would be a shame if Whittingham was to go elsewhere in search of a management position and that he would enter talks with the former striker in hopes of keeping him at the club. The two men left, who will battle it out for Portsmouth’s top job, Gordon Strachan and Roberto Mancini are both capable counterparts. Both have led their respective clubs to three consecutive league titles, and both can boast experience in Europe’s number one football competition, The Champion’s League. They both have similar win percentage rates with Mancini sitting on 61.67% while at Inter and Strachan hitting the slightly higher rate of 67.62%. Although some would say Strachan has had the easier competition in the Scottish League with Rangers being the only team to push Celtic over the past seasons. With Portsmouth set to take on Manchester United in just over two weeks, it would be a dream start for Strachan to come up against his old rival in Sir Alex Ferguson. The two are well known for their verbal attacks on one another over the years, and their off field battles could see a new rivalry form in the Premier League, one of David vs Goliath proportions. ![]() CAMPBELL SIGNS DEAL WITH VALENCIA Sol Campbell has left the club, signing a 4 year deal with Valencia that will certainly see him finish his career in Spain. Portsmouth caretaker manager, Tony Adams has said the loss of Campbell amongst other players also to leave the club is a huge blow, but one the club is ready to deal with. Adams will look to new signing, Younes Kaboul to fill the position left by Campbell, a role he has shown he is ready for with a great performances in Holland. Other transfers that have been confirmed by the club include: Hermann Hreidarsson to Siena Noe Paramot to Rennes Martin Cranie to Charlton Athletic Glen Little to Leicester City While the on-loan Jerome Thomas has been recalled by Charlton Athletic after injuries in the club’s hectic pre-season schedule. Everyone at Portsmouth wishes all these players the best of luck in their future with their prospective clubs. |
