2007/08 Season Review

The Champions League was a glorious one for the English Neutrals, as Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United all marched on to the Champions League Semi's. Manchester United started in Group F, Liverpool in A and Chelsea in B.

Liverpool's huge +13 goal difference helped them on their way to the Knock-Out stages with Wins over Beskitas (8-0) and Porto (4-1), and a single loss to Marseille (1-0). Eventual Winners Manchester United went unbeaten in the Group stages with wins over Sporting Lisbon(2-1), Roma(1-0) and Dynamo Kiev(4-0). Runners-Up Chelsea started in Group B and beat Shalke 04 on their way to the Knock-Out Stages.

Liverpool went onto beat Inter Milen and Arsenal en Route to the Semi's. In the first knockout round, United were drawn against Olympique Lyonnais, against whom they drew the away leg 1–1, thanks to a late equaliser from Carlos Tévez. The Red Devils then won the second leg 1–0, Cristiano Ronaldo scoring the only goal, to ensure a 2–1 aggregate win and a place in the quarter-finals, where they were again drawn against Roma. The quarter-final matches represented the fifth and sixth times these two clubs had met in Europe in just over 12 months. Manchester United beat Roma 2-0 in the Away Leg in Rome and went onto secure their semi-final place in the next leg with a 1-0 win (Aggregate 3-0).
Chelsea faced Olympiacos in the first knockout round. The first leg in Athens ended in a 0–0 draw. The second leg saw Chelsea run out 3-0 winners with goals from Michael Ballack, Frank Lampard and Salomon Kalou to send Chelsea into the quarter-finals. A Quarter-Final match against Fenerbahce proved alot tougher. The first Leg went in Fenerbace's faavour as they went ahead 2-1 with the final leg to play. But Chelsea should their determiantion to pull-off a 3-2 aggregate win, and hence move into the Semi's
The first Semi-Final and perhaps the least interesting, pitted ManchesterUnited against Spainsh Giants Barcelona. The first leg ended in stalemate, 1-1 draw at Camp Nou, after Ronaldo missed a Penalty but Ferguson's boys shined at Old Trafford as they Proceeded to the final in a narrow 1-0 win. The second semi-final was an all-English one, where Liverpool Faced Chelsea. The first leg was 1-1 but Chelsea squeezed a 3-2 win in the second leg to set-up a Manchester United vs Chelsea final to be held on the 21st May 2008.

Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring after 26 minutes. An interchange of passes between Paul Scholes and Wes Brown after a throw-in on the right flank gave Brown time to pick out a cross for Ronaldo, who directed his header past Petr Čech. Chelsea almost equalised in the 33rd minute when Frank Lampard's cross was headed back into the six-yard box by Didier Drogba. But Chelsea equalised on the eve of Half Time, Lampard the scorer. The score didn't budge as the Whistle approached and they went to Extra Time. Both teams had chances to score a vital second goal, with a Lampard left-footer hitting the underside of the crossbar and Ryan Giggs having a shot headed off the line by Terry. Manchester United's Ferdinand won the coin toss, and opted fo United to start procedings. Several Penalties later it was 5-5, Giggs scored his penalty to give United a narrow 6-5 lead, and it proved to be crucial for them as Van De Sar saved Anelka's Penalty to help win the Champions League.

The Barclays Premier League started, and Arsenal's month With League wins over Fulham and Man City, and a 1-1 Draw with blackburn sandwhiched in between. Manchester United where hanging around the relegation zone after picking 2 points against Reading, Portsmouth and Mancheser City. But it was Nani who helped see off Tottenham in a close encounter. They then went onto win 1-0 4 consecutive times. Chelsea were next for the reds and if they were going to make an impact on the League Table now was the time to do it. Man Utd showed there class in a 2-0 win overChelsea. Another 4 1-0 wins followed and a pattern erupting.

Elsewhere Arsenal's September month started with 3-1 ins over both Portsmouth and Rivals Tottenham, a 5-0 win over Derby and 1-0 win over the Hammers followed, as they contineud their unbeaten League run that season, and looked a strong contender for the title.

But 9 motnhs later the crown was decided, Liverpool and Arsenal had fallen short and it was down to Chelsea or Manchester United to take the title on the final day of the season. Manchester United beat Wigan Athletic 2–0 while Chelsea drew 1–1 with Bolton Wanderers, thus crowning Manchester United with their tenth Premier League title, and 17th championship overall, just one behind Liverpools total of 18. Meanwhile, despite Birmingham beating Blackburn Rovers 4-1 and Reading beating Derby 4-0, both Birmingham and Reading were relegated due to Fulham's 1-0 win over Portsmouth. This meant that Fulham avoided relegation by a goal difference of -22, compared to Reading's -25. On the same day, Middlesbrough beat Manchester City 8–1 to claim the biggest win of the season.

The Carling Cup was the 48th in its history last year, a competition for 92's top English Clubs, and this time it was Tottenham Hotspurs who went all the way, beating Chelsea in the Final.

Tottenham started at White Hart Lane beating Middlesborough 2-0, again they won 2-0, this time over Blackpool. Runners-Up Chelsea had a tough task against Leicster city in the 4th Round but ran out 4-3 winners in the end, and denied an upset. It was Manchester United who were embarssed by a 2-0 home defeat to Coventry City, who went onto lose in the next round 2-1 to West Ham.

By the Quarter-FInal stage only Premier Leageu Teasm Remained and the draws read as follows. West Ham vs Everton; Manchester City vs Tottenham; Chelsea vs Liverpool; Blackburn vs Arsenal.

The first Quarter final found West Ham United hosting Everton, Carlton Cole scored early to give the Hammers the lead before Osman equalised on the 40th minute. But Yakabu scored late on in the 2nd Half and avoid Extra Time to find themselves in the Semi's. The Second Semi was Man City vs Tottenham, Eventual Winners Tottenham won 2-0 with Defoe adn Malbranque goals, and secure there place in the Semi-Final.

Semi-Final Victories ensued for Tottenham Before the FInal Between Tottenham and Chelsea, It was the first League Cup Final to be played at the new Wembley Stadium, and the first to be played in England since the old Wembley was demolished in 2000. The defending champions were Chelsea, who beat Arsenal in the 2007 Final at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium. The final was contested by Tottenham Hotspur, who beat Arsenal 6–2 on aggregate in the semi-final, and Chelsea, who beat Everton 3–1 on aggregate. Tottenham Hotspur defeated Chelsea 2-1, after extra time, winning their first trophy for 9 years.
Chelsea took the lead in the 37th minute through a Didier Drogba free kick. This goal made Drogba the first player to score in three League Cup Finals, having also done so in 2005 and 2007. A Wayne Bridge handball gave Tottenham a 68th-minute penalty, and Bulgarian Dimitar Berbatov converted from the spot. Three minutes into extra time, Jonathan Woodgate headed a Jermaine Jenas free kick onto Petr Cech, who in turn pushed it straight back onto Woodgate's head to score the winning goal.

You must have cos in your review it says "The final was contested by Tottenham Hotspur, who beat Arsenal 6–2 on aggregate in the semi-final, and Chelsea, who beat Everton 3–1 on aggregate.[4] Tottenham Hotspur defeated Chelsea 2-1, after extra time, winning their first trophy for 9 years." and that [4] is a hyperlink to wikepedia
