Manager Mode for Dummies 09 Grammar Good grammar is key to a clear, concise Manager Mode. Responses that are well thought-out make an MM seem more organized, professional and realistic. Take this fictional example: Man utd sign Dutch striker Klaas-jan Huntelaar Manchester united boss Sir Alex Ferguson has announced today at a press conference that they have signed Ajax star Klaas-jan Huntelaar on a four year contract a happy Sir Alex said "I think that Huntelaar is class striker and quite versatile i think he will be a good and important addition to Uniteds strikeforce" And the revised, grammatically correct version: Man Utd sign Dutch striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar At a press conference today, Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson announced the signing of Ajax striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar on a four-year deal. Ferguson appeared excited by Huntelaar's move to the club, and spoke admirably of the striker: "Huntelaar is a class striker, and he's very versatile. I have no doubt that he will become a valuable asset to United." Detail A detailed opening post is probably the best start one can have to a Manager Mode. Details such as the club name, the manager name, kit colors, the squad list, honors and the home stadium are a must. Other details, such as club and player records, the club owner, the chairman, and the history of the club project a sense of a realism and dedication on the MM author's part. The drama unfolds You should always try to use a consistent style of match reporting, i.e. using minute-by-minute reports or sports journalism style articles. It's always good to experiment with the features and details of your reports, but the same basic layout should always be used. Make things clear When posting details mentioned above, clarity is a must. For example, if you are posting your team's starting lineup and decide to list player names vertically, you wouldn't go like this: Reina Carragher Hyppia Agger Aurelio Pennant Xabi Alonso Gerrard Riise Kuyt Torres Instead, you'd go like this: GK - Reina RB - Carragher RCB - Hyppia LCB - Agger LB - Aurelio RM - Pennant RCM - Xabi Alonso LCM - Gerrard LM - Riise RS - Kuyt LS - Torres Alternatively, you can always employ a diagram format with text, using the Align Center option to spread out player positions. ---Reina--- --Carragher--Hyppia--Agger--Aurelio-- --Pennant--Xabi Alonso--Gerrard--Riise-- --Kuyt---Torres-- There are still more options, such as this11.com, which allows the user to draw diagrams of formations and tactics. Keep it real The title says it all; keep it real. That means Robinho shouldn't go to Fulham, Cristiano Ronaldo shouldn't go to Chelsea, Sneijder shouldn't get arrested for robbing a restaurant while he's on vacation in Barcelona, and Avram Grant should never, ever, ever take up the position of manager at Wrexham. Of course, you can do all these things for fun, but it you want a realistic MM, don't try them. More realistic signings should be made; for instance, if you're the manager of Columbus Crew, you should sign Ricardo Clark instead of Jeremy Toulalan or Joao Moutinho. Listen to suggestions Nothing is more annoying than when someone won't follow your advice. So why should you ignore theirs? There obviously has to be a moment when you draw the line but not taking other people's advice has been the downfall of many an MM author. Listen to suggestions, open up the floor for constructive criticism, ask others what you're doing right and wrong. It will help you. Don't be a sycophant There's nothing wrong with praising other people's MMs because you genuinely like their style and format. But don't go running around from thread to thread saying "Good job mate", "Well done", "Excellent stuff" and the like just so you can rack up views on your own MM by having them stop by the thread. People know when they are being praised for the wrong reasons, and attempting to flatter them with hollow words will not go down well. Don't go over the top with advertising Another straightforward rule; don't spam the same message over and over in several threads so you can draw attention to your own. Work hard on your MM, make a few comments in the Manager Mode Chat Thread and eventually the others will notice your MM. Start a new thread only if you have to It's best to pick a team you like, put effort into your work, and shape it into a good MM. If you like it, stick with it. Some things are unavoidable - a corrupted file or an editing error, for instance - but if nothing's wrong with the game, stay with your MM for as long as you can. Vox populi Starting a poll asking "What team should I be?" doesn't mean much if you don't take the team with most votes; it's always best to listen to the people who have voted in the poll. They're (usually) willing to pick your MM team for you but if you vow to choose from a bunch of Championship teams, don't go off and sign with Manchester United. You will lose credibility quickly if you make empty promises. Don't throw a hissy fit... ...If no one reads your thread. It will make you seem like an attention-hungry kid who absolutely needs someone to read his thread. lalalalala yourself, see if you're doing anything wrong. If you're not, it could be a host of other things, including high traffic on the site or lack of interest in the MM. Those are two variables you can't easily control, but you can learn to tip them in your favor. Be unique! Be creative, use your imagination, and have fun doing it, whether you're Photoshopping a banner for your next league match, creating a new team, or using a new style of match reports. It's all up to you. Use Wikipedia at your own risk There is absolutely no problem with using Wiki for stats, information, history, etc. But you should never, ever, ever copy word for word from Wiki. It is akin to admitting you're completely unmotivated to do something original. It needs some elbow grease, and suchlike No Manager Mode is complete without the author putting sheer effort into his posts. Every article, match report and transfer update you write should be done with the utmost motivation and confidence that you can do a good job.
