Default AS Roma - la Magica dell' Italia

AS Roma, Associazione Sporitva Roma, was founded in the Summer of 1927 when three clubs from the City of Rome: Roman, Alba-Audace and Fortitudo merged in an attempt to challenge the dominant Northern teams. The only team to avoid the merger was Lazioe, and the two teams have since had an intense rivalry. Roma is the fourth most supported club in Italy with 6% of Italians supporting the capital side.
Roma have won Serie A just three time, first in 1941-42 then again in 1982-83 and 2000-01. The giallorosi have also won nine Coppa Italia trophies, and on the European stage Roma have won an Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1960-61, and have come close to success as runners-up in both the European Cup in 1983 and the UEFA Cup in 1990-91.

THE MANAGER

Luciano Spalletti was a former player for Serie C teams such as Empoli and Spezia. His early career in management began at struggling Empoli, where he led the Tuscanian side to two consecutive promotions from Serie C1 to Serie A. However, it was at Udinese where he really began to make an impact as a manager. During the 2005-05 season, Spalletti guided Udinese to a fourth-placed finish in Serie A, exceeding expectations and securing a spot in the UEFA Champions League.
This success attracted the attention of AS Roma. The capital side had come off a disappointing season, and Spalletti was offered the task of attempting to bring order to the chaotic side. On 26 February 2006, Roma broke the Serie A record for consecutive wins (11) with a 2-0 victory over rivals SS Lazio. At the end of 2006, Spalletti was elected Serie A Coach of the Year, and, in the following months, led Roma until the Champions League quarter-final after a 2-0 victory over Lyon. In the quarter final, despite a promising 2-1 win in the first leg, Roma crumpled incredibly to a 7-1 annihilation at the hands of Sir Alex Ferguson's mighty Manchester United. They won the Coppa Italia against Inter Milan, with an aggregate result of 7-4. Roma again defeated Inter 1-0 in the 2007-08 Supercoppa Italiana final. Spalletti's Roma team became the first Italian team to defeat Real Madrid over two legs. His favourite formation is 4-2-3-1, with 2 centre-halves, 2 full-backs, 2 defensive-midfielders, 2 wingers, 1 attacking-midfielder, and 1 striker.

Cícero João de Cézare, nicknamed Cicinho (pronounced [siˈɲu] Si-sin-yo) (born June 24, 1980 in Pradópolis, São Paulo, Brazil), is a Brazilian footballer. In 2005 he won the Confederations Cup with the Brazilian National Team. Later that year, he won the Club World Cup, playing for São Paulo, attracting the attention of Real Madrid who he joined for a fee of €4m. In the 2006-07 season, Cicinho suffered an extensive injury to his ankle and sat out for over six months. In the 2007-08 pre-season, the full-back was pushed down the pecking order at former club Real Madrid under new coach Bernd Schuster, below Michel Salgado and Sergio Ramos. He therefore requested to the club hierarchy to move to Roma who had been following him for some time Despite interest from Sevilla and Chelsea Cicinho was adamant about moving to Rome, and he signed for the Roma in a deal reportedly worth 11 million euros. He made his official debut in a Roma jersey on the first matchday of Serie A against Palermo, coming on to substitute Ludovic Giuly in the second half. Roma ran out as 2-0 winners.

Juan Silveira dos Santos(born February 1, 1979) is a Brazilian defender. On June 21, 2007, he was bought by A.S. Roma for €6.3m. Prior to signing for Roma, he previously played five years for German club Bayer Leverkusen and for Flamengo in Brazil. Juan's first season at A.S. Roma immediately began with a challenge. He was signed to replace Christian Chivu who had left that very same summer for Inter Milan. Roma supporters doubted he would be able to perform as well as the Romanian captain had done for so many years. However, Juan immediately began surprising his new supporters with a string of impeccable performances. Soon, Roma supporters realized that the Brazilian international was no less reliable than the former Roma number 13. Juan became a true leader of Roma's defense after just the first few matches of the new 2007/2008 campaign. Juan's start with A.S. Roma was stunning. The third fixture of the 2007/2008 campaign saw A.S. Roma face Reggina in a tough away match. Juan broke the deadlock with an amazing backheel volley after Francesco Totti's cross. He is part of the Brazil national football team which he captained in the 2004 Copa América and the 2007 Copa América final, both of which Brazil won. He is widely considered to be one of the most consistent players on the Brazil national football team, with generally solid performances.

Philippe Mexès was born on March 30, 1982 in Toulouse, France. He began his career with local club Toulouse FC. However, he left for AJ Auxerre's youth team when he was sixteen years old. He successfully participated in the Under-18 and Under-21 French national football teams, eventually winning a spot in the senior squad in August 2002. He was called up for France's friendly match against Bosnia-Herzegovina in August 2006. Mexès is currently one of the backbones of A.S. Roma after completing the vastly hyped transfer which cost Roma €7 million in 2004. The common feeling amongst Roma supporters is that this was money well spent. He officially signed his contract for the Roman club on September 1st 2004. After a difficult first season with the capitoline club, Mexès began the 2005-06 campaign on the bench, leaving the central defender spot to Sammy Kuffour. However, as Kuffour was on national team duty for Ghana, Mexès slowly gained playing time. He rapidly became a key player for Luciano Spalletti's squad. On "Sammy" Kuffour's return, Mexes forced the Ghana international to familiarize himself with the bench. As of the 2007-08 campaign, Mexes has established himself as an integral first team player for A.S. Roma. Fellow teammates have reported that he does not speak Italian, but "Roman." The Roma supporters now consider him one of their idols also because of his promise to tie himself to this club for the remaining years of his career, despite offers from Real Madrid, AC Milan and Internazionale. Mexes is a central defender of extraordinary technique, and is also gifted with great physical abilities. His height (1.87 m) has enabled him to score a number of headers throughout his career. Despite his young age, he is already an incredibly experienced player who transmits a great deal of serenity and assurance to the rest of his teammates, both on and off the field.

John Arne Semundseth Riise was born on 24 September 1980 in Ålesund, Norwiega. He began his career in his homeland with Aalesund. After just one season he moved abroad, and played the next few years of his professional career with French club Monaco. He was a regular member of the 1999-2000 Ligue 1 championship-winning side, but he fell out of favour with coach Claude Puel after admitting his desire to leave. Riise was then sold to Liverpool for £4 million in 2001. He made his début for Liverpool in the European Super Cup game against Bayern Munich on 24 August, and scored to win the game 3-2. He scored ten goals in his first season, including against teams such as Arsenal, Everton, Newcastle, and even the mighty Manchester United. He endured what were considered below-average seasons by most in the 2002-03 and 2003-04 seasons, but he rediscovered his form in 2004-05, winning a Champions League winner's medal, although his attempt in the penalty shoot-out against A.C. Milan was saved. In January 2006 Riise signed a new contract at Anfield to keep him at the club until 2009 and in February, he announced his desire to stay at Liverpool for the rest of his career. After a poor run of form in Liverpool's away games in the autumn of 2006. Riise reacted to comments made by team-mates Pepe Reina and Jamie Carragher that Liverpool could effectively write off their chances of winning the league, saying "We never give up. Cowards give up." Liverpool didn’t win the league. On 22 April 2008, in Liverpool's Champions League semi-final first leg against Chelsea at Anfield, Riise scored an own goal in the 95th minute to equalise. Liverpool went on to lose 3-2 in the away match and were eliminated from the tournament 4-3 on aggregate. On 18 June 2008 Riise signed a four-year contract with A.S. Roma. The club reportedly paid a fee of £4M, which could rise up to £5M, for him. Riise has expressed some concerns with being sunburnt while in Rome.

He has played over 300 Serie A games. Max Tonetto scored his first goal for A.S Roma during a match against Empoli in 2007-2008 season, by completing Totti's pass and scoring a wonderful goal. He spent several seasons playing for Juventus and Parma, before moving to Roma for a deal worth a reported €11,500,000. He’s played a total of 15 games for Roma, scoring one goal. Daniele De Rossi is an Italian footballer, born July 24, 1983. He was brought up through the AS Roma Youth Program. He is a defensive midfielder, well known for his vision on the ball, combative personality, and gentlemanly behavior. The most recent demonstration of this was when De Rossi admitted to Mauro Bergonzi that he had scored a goal with his hand. Bergonzi had allowed the goal, until Daniele admitted that he had pushed the ball in, not with his head, but with his hand. Another example was during the 2006 FIFA World Cup. In a group match against USA, De Rossi was shown a straight red for elbowing American, Brian McBride. After the game, Daniele apologized to McBride. Daniele De Rossi also has a knack for finding the net. He has scored 18 goals for Roma, including an incredible 40-yard goal against Sebastian Frey. De Rossi knocked the ball onto his right foot, before unleashing a shot which curved away from a shell-shocked Frey. Hopefully Daniele De Rossi can add to his tally this season.

He has since played over 120 games, scoring 21 fabulous goals. His performances for Roma earned him a call-up to Marcelo Lippi’s World Cup squad. He started in all of the Azzuri’s games, and was key to their success. Under Luciano Spalletti, he plays in the pocket behind the striker, as a CAM. Despite this, he can play practically anywhere in the midfield. He is known for his unlimited energy, fantastic tackling ability, and never-say-die attitude. Despite his age, he feels he can still improve, and has compared himself to win, in that “it only gets better as it gets older”. He will be pivotal in leading Roma to the Scudetto this season.

In the 2006-2007 season, he was expected to be one of the best players in the league. Yet a crippling injury resulted in few appearances that season. He has made a total of 96 appearances, scoring nine goals. These include two brilliant long range goals, scored in the first two matches of the 2007-2008 season. He is famed for both his long shots, and passing ability. He generally plays as a defensive midfielder, with team-mate Daniele De Rossi.

Serie A Team of the Season

Now let’s take one last look back at the 07/08 campaign before we move on to the next exciting Serie A season. Here I will be selecting my eleven best players based on last season’s Serie A. I have chosen to use a 4-3-3 system.

Goalkeeper – Sebastien Frey (Fiorentina)
As usual there have been some outstanding performances in the Italian top tier by some of the world’s greatest goalkeepers. There were three which stood out above the rest – Gigi Buffon, Julio Cesar and Sebastien Frey. The latter has been consistently better than the other two, as Fiorentina’s attacking style of play has meant he has had to always be on his game, always be ready. While Juve and Inter both had successful seasons, Frey didn’t have the same solid defence in front of him, and with some match-winning saves to push Fiorentina to a Champions League spot above AC Milan, their first since the late 90s.

Right-Back – Maicon (Internazionale)
This decision was just as difficult. The outsider was Christian Maggo, whose displays for Sampdoria have been consistently excellent, earning himself a transfer to Napoli this summer. Two players from Internazionale, Maicon and Javier Zannetti the captain have both had outstanding seasons, especially attacking. However Maicon has established himself as the first choice right-back for the champions while Zannetti has moved into a more central role. Therefore Maicon, as one of the best full-backs in the world, is my right-back.

Centre-Back – Philipe Mexes (AS Roma)
This one was without question. Mexes has proven himself as one of the world’s best, and arguably the strongest defender in
Italy last season, leading Roma to a second place finish closely behind Inter. He also has excellent technical skill, and has quietly developed into Roma’s rock following the departure of Christian Chivu last summer.

Centre-Back – Giorgio Chiellini (Juventus)
There were a lot of candidates for this position. Ivan Corboda at Inter looked to have secured his place in this team with solid performances until he was injured. Following his injury Inter kept just one clean sheet in their next eight games and almost threw away their 11 point lead over Roma. Then there was Paulo Cannavaro, younger brother of Fabio, whose defensive performances led Napoli to a top half finish and an Intertoto Cup spot. But Giorgio Chiellini has been magnificent since his switch to centre-back from left-back and has cemented his place in the national side. He is considered the next Fabio Cannavaro, and at only 23, is looking it.

Left-Back – Juan Manuel Vargas (Catania)
Chiellini could quite easily have fit into this position, but Vargas has had a terrific last season for Catania, especially going forward. His long-range strike is one of the best around, having scored five goals this season. Vargas has been compared by the club’s fans to Roberto Carlos for his rampaging runs down the left wing and a lethal left foot. A move to a big club is imminent.

Defensive-Midfielder – Daniele De Rossi (AS Roma)
Despite a poor disciplinary record, the 25 year-old has come into his own this season; his strong tackling, brilliant range of passing, and venomous long-range shot make him one of the best all-round midfielders around. He is playing for his hometown team and is one of the favourites to take over the captaincy from Francesco Totti. Despite his young age, he has already captained Italy in friendlies against South Africa and Portugal.

Defensive-Midfielder – Javier Zannetti (Internazionale)
While Cambiasso had another tireless season and held together the midfield, his partner Javier Zannetti was even better as captain. He was the most consistent player for Inter over the 07/08 season, and in fact his whole career, and Il Trattore remains a fans favourite. There is an element of class in everything he does both on and off the field, and he once again deserves his place in the team of the season.

Central-Midfielder – Marek Hamsik (Napoli)
At only 20 years of age, Marek Hamsik has had a breathtaking season, from which he has attracted the attention of most of Europe’s top clubs including Inter, Juve, Barcelona, Chelsea and Lyon. He has been a key player in Napoli’s rise up the table, finishing as top scorer for the side. He has been labelled the new Pavel Nedved who he idolises, and Napoli will have a tough time keeping hold of him this summer.

Forward – Alessandro Del Piero (Juventus)
In his best season since 1997/98, Alessandro Del Piero has once again proved the critics wrong by scoring 21 goals in 32 starts, finishing as top scorer in Serie A. The 33 year-old has also shown leadership and creativity as well has his goal-scoring instinct and he undoubtedly earns a place in this eleven.

Forward – Adrian Mutu (Fiorentina)
Sebastian Giovinco was a revelation on loan to Empoli, as was Alexandre Pato at Milan. Trezuguet and Ibrahimovic have both continued their phenomenal goalscoring form, but I have left them all out for Adrian Mutu. Following the departure of Luca Toni to Bayern Munich, Adrian Mutu has had to do it all on his own, spearheading the Fiorentina attack, and now spearheading this team’s attack. He has scored 17 goals in 26 games for La Viola in Serie A, and 6 in 8 in the UEFA Cup.

Forward – Antonio Di Natale (Udinese)
Keeping out Borreilio on loan to Genoa from AC Milan, Di Natale has captained Udinese to a UEFA Cup spot and scored 17 goals in the process. He is fast, brave, and imaginative, and has shown his versatility by playing both as a striker and on the wings, dropping deep and scoring freely. He is now a regular for the Azzuri, and the 30 year-old is no doubt going to play a big part in the near future of Italian football.

Final Team:

Nothing wrong with you doing Roma. Just means more competition
Why not do a different Italian team? Udinese and Sampodoria have great squads, and the potential to get a european place.

Well we've been planning it for a few days now and it's all starting to come together. But yeah we've put a lot of effort into it. OP up now - that's just the start. Lots more to come yet.
