Season Preview Part ONE

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Arsenal

-Do Not Write Off the Arsenal-

2007/2008: Coming to the End

Arsenal was definitely looking to raise the Barclays Premier League trophy last season but at the end of the campaign they could only finish third. There were some disappointments in their season. For instance that horrible exit out of the UEFA Champions League to Liverpool after some bad refereeing decisions. They were without Henry and this set of Gunners were looking to prove most people wrong that they could bring more silverware to the club now that the Frenchman has left. A Horrific injury to Eduardo in the away match to Birmingham might've put a dent in their confidence, as they could not hold their ground. This caused him to be out for approximately a year and he may return before the year ends. They had a poor run of form after sitting on top of the league table for the majority of the season. As the season drew nigh they had a 21 point lead over Manchester United, then this was eventually cut to 4 points. Then United eventually moved past them and went on to claim to retain the title. Wenger's side will hopefully get in some new faces to bond with the current team to produce something special for the new season. The young guns will definitely be lookign to repeat their awesome start last season and maintain it win their league after a 5-year drought.

Summer Activity

Again Wenger has brought in young unknowns. A few of these are Amaury Bischoff and Francis Coquelin. He is keeping faith in his youths and he hopes they will prove their worth and show their quality in the matches they okay. No one can predict who Wenger is going after. 'Le Prof' protects and safeguards his targets so well. He did however bring in an up and rising star, being Samir Nasri from Marseille, who is a threat on the wings. Nasri was brought in as a replacement for Hleb. Both have a similar style of play, that is good footwork, drible and technical ability. The young Frenchman shoots more than Hleb though when he has the chance. Buying Welsh talent Aaron Ramsey was definitely a boost as he is versatile in the middle. Ramsey is athletic and quick and has quality on the ball. He can even play that holding midfield role which Gilberto had done for some years.

Every year fans hear that the Gunners have risen to the occasion and they don't really need any new signings. Wenger has an eye for young raw talent and he brings them from the most obscure regions so he does not spend huge amounts. So expect a Young Gun to emerge this season whether it be Diaby, Song, Denilson or Bendtner remains to be seen.

Analysis

Arsene has said that some of the youth players such as Randall, Gibbs and Wilshere will be in the senior squad. From their pre-season Wilshere looked like a promising player. The Arsenal manager has over the years sort of neglected the English players and his team consists of over 85% foreigners. The signing of Wilshere will hopefully be helpful to the nation. His side is known for their beautiful or somewhat sexy football, and this could also help in their quest to be champions. However, the Arsenal got knocked over at times by their in-experience. This again could be their downfall. Nevertheless, there are several players with much experience, Gallas and Toure have both won League titles, Rosicky is a Bundesliga champion, Fabregas is a European championship winner, van Persie and Adebayor are starters on their national teams and Clichy has filled the space left at left-back since Ashley Cole's departure. Arsene has always stressed that if you are good enough you are old enough.

Arsenal's opening match is against Stoke City away at the Britannia Stadium. If they get off to a promising start then they could hold a position in the top 3 after ten games. The new comers will surely look to put up a good fight and hold their nerve. Thus if the gunners play as well as they do then they can look forward to a good season. The Emirates Stadium was somewhat of a holy ground last season with only West Ham United beating them there. So are Arsenal are a definite threat.

Manager:

The Professor is of course hoping his style and the young guns will bring success again to the club. The summer departure of others such as Flamini and Gilberto suggest all is not well.

Chop rating: 0/7

Key Player

Fabregas thrilled everyone during the first half of the season when he moved through the midfield like a midfield maestro but he was unimpressive after January. He will be looking to lead the attack this year and be bring consistency to his form.

Aston Villa

-Breaking Into the Top Four-

2007/2008: Coming to the End

After a shaky season, Villa was able to finish 6th and qualify for Europe and they were third overall in goals scored behind Manchester United and Arsenal. Villa finished behind Everton. O'Neill's side was unfortunate not to be ahead of the Toffess at the end of the 2007/2008 season. Their small squad influenced their form and their finish. Though they lacked the man-power, there were some classy performances by players such as Ashley Young and Gabriel Agbonlahor.

The Villans had a formidable start and were 3 points off United in December. They however did not take the chance to close the gap in the second half in the campaign. They did not manage to be consistent and thus this was their downfall. Twice they drew 4-4, at Spurs and Chelsea, showing they are strong and are capable of matching anyone if they manage to control the number of goals they concede. Martin O'Neill's side had a good run scoring 15 goals in 3 matches against relegation fighters Derby, Birmingham and Bolton. Then towards the end of the season they could only get 2 points from the last 3 games versus Wigan, Everton and West Ham United.

Aston Villa completed last season qithout a specialist right-back as Olof Mellberg was set to join Juventus and there wll be a huge gap to fill in their back line. Shockingly they let in 51 goals, same as Wigan, but they are hoping to reduce that number significantly this coming season.

Summer Activity

The Gareth Barry transfer saga sort of obstructed Aston Villa's plans for the summmer. Negotiations have been going on for sometime now and a price still cannot be agreed for the Villa skipper. Manager O'Neill expressed his willingness to keep the captain at the club. However, Liverpool's strong interest in the player has made him turn his attention to joining the Reds to play Champions League football. This desire to join the 18-time Champs has also disgruntled the Villa fans. He was booed on their pre-season debut at Walsall. Barry could be said to be their heart-beat last season and he may get worse treatment after the season begins. O'Neill has placed an £18M price tag on the 27-year old and he has said that Benitez has until the final day of the window to get Barry. On the other hand O'Neill did not waste time in getting replacements if Barry is to leave. There was the acquisition of Steve Sidwell from Chelsea for £5.5M. He could not secure a starting role for the Blues and he will be looking to bring the form he showed at Reading to Villa. Also Curtis Davies' move from West Bromich Albion has been made permanent and is thought to be around £9M.

Then another signing being Sidwell's ex-team mate was Nicky Shorey who was brought in as a backup to Wilfred Bouma. There was some vacancy at right=back because of Mellberg's departure to the Old Lady in Italy. He made a switch from the middle of the defence to a wing back last season. Well Luke Young's entrance should now fill all spaces at the back. Villa's backline is full of experience. Now O'Neill sought to decrease the number of goals his team concedes and he did buy two new keppers, both of the same first name but differ vastly in experience. First there is 37-year old Brad Freidel who has had four consecutive 38-game Premier League Seasons with Blackburn and should be a clever signing. His namesake now is Brad Guzan, signed from Chivas USA. The 23-year old was named the MLS Goalkeeper of the year last season. There should be a lot of competition to see who will go between the sticks.

Analysis

If the skipper is not available for selection then it will be difficult for O'Neill to emulate or better last season's performance. Villa had to use their money on some required signings and could not go about spending like some other clubs. There are just three strikers upfront, and could be certainly looking for a 4th for reliable backup. James Milner, a new buy, can play upclose behind the strikers but this idea may not be what O'Neill has in mind. Still he would bring more depth to the squad. Stilian Petrov finished strong last season and that season was probably his best. If Barry leaves for Anfield then he is expected to take charge of the goal-scoring and creativeness that Barry had at the club. Reo-Coker who has set the standard for consistency in the squad and was also the most lively will be given the captain's armband.

It looks inevitable that this team would be getting into the top four. If they hold on to their man then it could be possible. However, the squad is looking a bit small and this could have an effect on them by not having enough backup. Thus clubs such as Spurs and Manchester City could overtake them. Thus if they are determined they can fight in the top four.

Manager

O'Neill has had a tough summer bringing in a Chelsea reserve to replace Barry if he leaves. Moreover the task of holding on to the Villa captain is even more difficult. He hopes he can end the trophy drought for all these years after the owner has helped him build a good squad.

Chop rating: 1/6

Key Player

Ashley Young began last season sluggishly after his move from Watford which suggested he was not ready for the Premier League. Late on he found his feet and soon got his England call-up.

Default Season Preview Part TWO - Blackburn Rovers and Bolton Wanderers

Season Preview Part TWO

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Blackburn Rovers

-Back to Basics-

2007/2008: Coming to the End

Mark Hughes finished his spell with Rovers on a high note. Rovers placed 7th and were ready for the season looking to improve on their form. The stars of Blackburn were Roque Santa Cruz and the now departed David Bentley along with Brad Friedel now at Aston Villa and Stephen Warnock. Friedel was almost invincible in goal and his defence was just as good. Ryan Nelsen, the skipper, led his back four and aided them in being a strong unit. Morten Gamst Pedersen looked to have a poor and disappointing season, but it was Bentley who's fine form carried Rovers on and provided some sublime balls to Santa Cruz who can be said to be one of the best buys of last season. The team looked to have a strong base on which they can build but now that Hughes has left it seems their progress has been slowed down.

Summer Activity

Blackburn sought a new gaffer. Some possible names that the club were looking at were Sam Allardyce and Steve McClaren. However, unexpectedly after rumours of Paul Ince being involved he eventually got the job. Though he is relatively inexperienced Blackburn has a strong core and Ince should do well after his time with MK Dons. His appointment gave the fans mixed emotions, but the same was done with Hughes in 2004 so this decision seemed like a good one. Others questioned his lack of experience with top flight football.

Ince's next objective was to ensure his top striker Santa Cruz stayed at the club. However, the most influential player, Bentley was sold to Spurs plus South African striker Benni McCarthy s linked with Galatasary. Furthermore, their stalwart and shot-stopper Friedel departed to a somewhat better side. England kepper Paul Robinson was brought to replace him and he is sure to rediscover his form that made him one of the best keepers a few years back. If this goes as planned, they should not miss Friedel since he is in the twilight of his career.

There seems to be some dissatisfaction concerning Ince's manaement style and the arrival of veteran striker Robbie Fowler on trial has not calmed the fans. Carlos Villanueva, a yougn talent, looks like one for the future. He will take time to adapt to the Premier League is not expected to replace Bentley. Some other somewhat uninspiring transfers was the loan-deals of Danny Simpson of Manchester United, Santa Cruz's 18-year old brother and soem other deals are said to be up in the air. Ghanian midfielder, Anthony Annan is also linked with Rovers and is the only good pick of the bunch.

Analysis

Rovers as a relegation candidate seems a tad drastic. Santa Cruz and McCarthy are still expected to be spearheads in attack for Rovers. Their team is quite solid. Paul Robinson has always been categorized for for his form in goal with his poor decisions. Nevertheless, he is a good keeper without a doubt and just needs to be more consistent. Ooijer will be confident after captaining Holland after the Euros and skipper Ryan Nelsen has been underrated except by those who pay attention to what he does regularly. Star-back of last season's campaign Stephen Warnock will be looking to put back on a performance similar to last season's and of-course to improve. Gamst Pedersen who is most likely to continue on the left wing will have to improve his form after a fairly quiet season and put in more creativity in Blackburn's style of football. Maybe Villanueva will be used to add a bit of versatility in the middle.

Rovers' weakest link seems to be in the centre of the park. David Dunn has been named club vice-captain, so he is expected to start in the middle despite him not being a fan favourite. Steven Reid, who is quite average, Mokoena and Johann Vogel will all be contesting the role of partnering Dunn. Reid looks like the favourite to play this part after the ageing but talented Tu*** will be playing an auxiliary role. The astute acquisition of Manchester United starlet Danny Simpson will ensure Brett Emerton can be put in the right of midfield after Bentley's departure. This is rather shameful as he seemed right at home playing as a right-back. Bentley will surely be missed after thir seems to be a lack of creativity in the midfield. Ince should make a couple new signings to raise the quality of their midfield to produce a performance close to or better than the previous season.

Blackburn could be in for a rough season and Ince with his hardest managerial battle yet. Expectations will be high after last season's finish and anything less than a top half finish will not be enough for the fans for sure. Their rear and front both look strong but their midfield again is looking to be their downfall. When the 2007/2008 season was coming to a close their players began to look fatigue, thus new players will be needed. Two quality and influential players have been lost with one quality replacement being Robinson brought in. The teams still needs strengthening and if they get in quality additions then a long and frustrating season lies ahead.

Manager

The Guv'nor is only known for rescuing Macclesfield and helping the Dons to win the League Two title but he will surely be up for this new challenge and do not bet against him succeeding.

Chop rating: 5/6

Key Player

The Paraguayan's superb 19 Premier League goals in his first season kept the team alive and competitive. His main has left thus he hopes for the similar assistance to increase that number.

Bolton Wanderers

-Avoiding the Drop-

2007/2008: Coming to the End

Bolton were stuck in the relegation zone for most of the season. It was to some extent confusing and disappointing for Megson's side. Megson's predecessor, Sammy Lee, didn't have any success with the buys he made, as his former boss Sam Allardyce did. Lee couldn't make an impact and so he struggled as most assistants do when they are asked to make the step up to manager. The players he bought seemed to lack quality and few could even keep a starting place in the team. It didn't take long for his reign to end as the club found themselves wallowing below newcomers Derby County. The board got rid of him and brought in Gary Megson from Leicester City. His goal to keep the team up was made even harder as they lost Anelka to Chelsea in the January Transfer Window.

Fans looked to be feeling distress after the team's UEFA Cup exit and then a loss to local rivals Wigan. Megson didn't seem to have the backing of the fans but he kept them alive. His signing Gary Cahill proved to be a good one as he was excellent at the back and his partnership with Andy O'Brien was oen of the keys to the team staying up.

As the season draw to a close it looked as though Bolton's future in the top flight could end as they faced Chelsea away on the final day of the season. Their luck had seem to be running out as they lost to Arsenal after being two nil up and received a 4 nil thrashing by Aston Villa. Relegation was staring them in the face but they somehow held on and worked to beat the drop. Wins against Middlesbrough, Wigan and Sunderland, and a draw with Tottenham enabled survival for the club in the Premiership. Relief for all at Bolton.

Summer Activity

The Bolton Board has decided to give out more and substantial funds to than they ever did with Sam Allardyce. The team suffered a huge loss of talent in the middle as Campo, Braaten, Diouf, Stelios and Adranik all left for other clubs. Plus Guthrie did not sign permanently. Most were not regulars but there will not be any cover for these that the've left behind.

Megson, however brought in someone new in Elmander. He didn't look like much inspiration in the European Championship playing on the right, but one shouldn't judge him on that as he would definitely be used as a striker. Manager Megson and the fans will surely be hoping that he settles in quickly and begins to bring in goals as soon as possible. More goals are what they will be goign for this year to improve their stature in the league. Another buy being Muamba might have cost a bit too much but he could surely make his presence felt and bring in some enlightening plays in the midfield area. Mustapha Riga, their third signing should and is expected to fill the void left by El-Hadji Diouf. Megson also did a complete of the back-room staff to make a move for a better season.

Analysis

Wanderers have already spent around £20M but it does not appear that they will be fighting to make it into Europe. Thus their aim could be to better their position of the previous season and once again it won't be easy. The newcomers from the Championship could however help them to reach a comfortable place in the table. Last season they had an awful start and they were often playing catchup. Of-course a decent start would be their aim.

The partnership of Andy O'Brien and Gary Cahill at the back was almost like a brick wall along with Steinsson who was impressive at right-back. J-Lloyd Samuel or Ricky Gardner could complete a strong back-line in-front of a valiant and athletic Jussi Jaasklainen. If the manager goes with the traditional 4-4-2, then Muamba will go in the centre allowign Kevin Nolan [captain] to give assistance to Elmander and Davies with goals and assists. Matty Taylor who took a while to settle, but did improve and helped them with a draw at against Chelsea on the final day, could play wide on the left and could cause damage with his trademark long-range strikes. Megson hopes Riga will also settle on the right but if he struggles then Gavin McCann can surely replace him when needed.

With only Elmander upfront, there is some concern. Not being in Europe will ease some pressure off the squad and a lack of depth could also be a major worry. The midfield department looks a bit exposed and the acquisition of a midfielder could solve this. If fans think their spending will get them back into the top ten then they should think again. A good start could help to a mid-table finish but if they do not then it could be alot like last season, a struggle.

Manager

Gary Megson's appointment last year was not one that was praised around the club last season. Still, surprisingly, they are in the Barclays Premier League and he hopes for a drastic change this year.

Chop rating: 4/6

Key Player

Nolan is one player at Bolton is planning to bring more inspiration to the club. As captain he is definitely one that the others to look up on and off the pitch. Well he knows they will need all the encouragement they can get to make an even bigger impact this season.

Default Season Preview Part THREE - Chelsea and Everton

Season Preview Part THREE

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chelsea

-The Team to Beat-

2007/2008: Coming to the End

The Blues' campaign last season would surely be a story for one to tell to those youngsters coming up as one actually saw the narrowness of the margin between success and failure. For Chelsea it was a season that was all about a generally disliked manager to take the team further than his adored predecessor had led them.

Of-course succeeding Jose Mourinho at the Bridge would always be a difficult task but Avram Grant took it on and was so close to treble glory. Beaten in extra time of the Carling Cup final, edged out by two points in the title race despite getting 85 points [first time a team gathered this much without winning the title]; and beaten in a penalty shoot-out after extra time in the Champions League final. He would've surely been a hero and praised for his feat. However, he failed and his reward after being doubted, insulted and condemned was the sack a few days after their UEFA Champions League final loss to Manchester United.

Under Grant Chelsea only lost 2 out of 32 games. These were away to Man United and Arsenal. However, in the reverse fixtures Chelsea did defeat both title rivals. They kept their title hopes alive until the final day of the league campaign, which showed their determination. The London club never gave up their pursuit of the Barclays Premier League title. They moved past Arsenal and almost did the same to the defending Champs but 2 points dropped at Wigan proved costly although United's significant goal difference was always worth an extra point if push had come to shove.

The Londoners did not play any attractive football compared to Manchester United and Arsenal. Their attacks lacked flair and did not seem organized. They scored the fewest goals among the top four and kept a surprising 21 clean sheets. Club owner, Roman Abramovich demanded comprehensive football after the 'Special One' but got the same somewhat dull and sensible football under Grant. He could not win over the fans it semmed. There was much speculation about his future after their Carling Cup defeat to London rivals Spurs and a humiliating FA Cup quarter-final loss to Barnsley.

Grant's team was emitting quality and resilience, mostly defensively but lacked the creativity in-front of goal. Their top strikers Drogba and Anelka only had a tally of 9 goals between them. One question was why Grant played Anelka out of position, that is, on the wing. The dynamic central midfielder Michael Essien had spent too much time as a right-back, and summer signing Florent Malouda could not replace produce anything special to help their attack. There seemed to be much dependence on midfielders such as Frank Lampard [who had his own injury problems last season] and Michael Ballack [who emerged as the Blues' most influential player in the final third of the campaign. Their energy and creative play brought goals and performances that almost saw Chelsea getting more silverware last season. Most may see their performances as desperate regardless of Grant's guidance. Thus this may be the reason for his sacking.

Summer Activity

So Grant's reign ended informally and next in line was Luis Philipe Scolari who was announced as their new manager his Euro 2008 campaign as Portugal Coach. He has a better record than Grant, and is more of a disciplinarian that gives him respect from his players.

He might be taking a risk with this job as he has not been with a football club for 7 years. Although he has been there and done it before it should not be such a tough task and he will more than welcome this new challenge. Having already been through the Brazilian media in his coaching of the national side, he wont find the English Press more uncomfortable.

So Scolari is the 4th Chelsea Manager since the Russian Revolution started at Stamford Bridge. The previous three were all sacked despite delivering what most clubs would pass for relative success. Thus he knows what the Owner needs his club to achieve; the Champions League and to retain the Premier League title. The other imperative is to get these prizes through an entertaining and almost exhilarating type of football. Not much but it's if he can adjust to club football quickly and effective enough to achieve what's required.

So his first task as most managers have to do during the summer is to keep their best players. Lampard and Drogbad who were linked with joining Mourinho at Inter Milan, are looking like they will stay until next season. Chelsea have already started spending this summer as they have acquired the services of tow young players who were under his reign at Portugal. These being Deco and Jose Bosingwa. The right-back Bosingwa is well-known by the new manager as to what he can bring to the team as well as Deco who is very creative in the middle.

Speculation persisted that Robinho would join them but he snubbed them for a better fee offered by Manchester City. He would've been the ideal signing to add to the attack but they are still searching. They are short of strikers as Andriy Shevchenko and Claudio Pizarro have both departed. Sheva has rejoined AC Milan and Pizarro left for Werder Bremen on a year-long loan. Shaun Wright-Phillips also has left to rejoin his former club Man City. Other departures saw Claude Makalele return home to France to join Paris Saint-Germain, Steve Sidwell to Aston Villa, Tal Ben Haim also to Man City and Khalid Boulahrouz to Stuttgart. Makalele would be missed as he was oen to watch in that holdign midfield role. This void will now have John Obi Mikel stepping up to produce similar or better performances than the Frenchman. Sidwell was rarely used and he won't be missed. All of these won't be considered as losses.

The team had a very good pre-season and Scolari now has an idea of his starting line-up for the league opener.

Analysis

Many will be interested in watching how the Brazilian Manager does in his return to club football. He will surely be compared to Mourinho and Grant on what they gained for the team and brought to the team. Bosingwa's addition should add more quality to the right side of their already fierce back-line in-front of arguably the best keeper in the world, Petr Cech who had a bad season. Thus it will be difficult to get on the score-sheet against them.

In the midfield of this team they have an abundance of talent. Essien will surely be back in the middle where he is phenomenal, and if Ballack can display the form he had at the latter stages of the season and in Euro 2008 then he will again be one to watch, the creativity of Deco, Lampard's eye for others and the goal, Mikel showing his strength and speed, Plus with Joe Cole and Malouda to provide pace and with on the flanks they are sure to be dangerous. The coach only has to find the right combination and balance out the best of the middle men.

Anelka has given a warning and Scolari may be looking to focus more towards working the ball through the middle and he will hope his best players can do this. Many have said that playing both Drogba and Anelka does not seem to work out as it didn't in the past season. However, one would expect Scolari to try and perfect this. Salomon Kalou was impressive last season but was not quick ay making good decisions when infront of goal. Expect better of him this time around.

Chelsea will certainly be working on being more consistent and will put up a stronger fight for the title. They have a very intense squad and a home record that doesn't seem like it will be broken. Therefore expect them in the top 3 for the majority of the latter stages in the upcoming season. They have everything to get another title; the right playing resources and the right manager to bring trophies to the Bridge again. Still, their chances to get both hands on the title will depend on the performances of Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal and how he and his team reacts to the 'Big Four' challenge.

Chelsea should againbe among the top challengers for the league title and they may even bring in another cup. Now Scolari is back in club football, The aim of getting the title after a three-year absence seems a bit far fetched.

Manager

He has bagged a top job . Of-course he is aiming to do better than trophy-winning Mourinho and finals-reaching Grant and to do it in style. It doesn't seem difficult as he already saw what the team is capable of.

Chop rating: 14/9

Key Player

It has taken him a while but finally Ballack is controlling the team's midfield and again has the look of one of the best players in Europe. If they only had more than one striker to aim for things may have been better. Thus if he and Deco can link well then they'll be no stopping these guys.

Everton

-The Fight is On-

2007/2008: Coming to the End

Moyes' Toffess finished 5th in the Premiership and on a high note as they almost edged out their merseryside rivals Liverpool for the 4th UEFA Champions League spot. However, they were only good enough for UEFA Cup qualification. Injuries took their toll and their goalscorign was not of their standards which all limited their chance of breaking into the top four again. Nevertheless, the team had some good performances with some well drilled defending and an organised midfield enabled them to do well enough. Some individuals who stood out were Yakubu with 21 goals, the form of Steven Pienaar, Tim Howard in goal and Joleon Lescott who helped with numerous goals from set pieces.

Loosing Yobo, Yakubu and Pienaar to the African Cup of Nations was minor blow to the team at a tiem where their services were essential. Moyes fought hard to retain Peinaar and his stay showed his benefits to the team.

There were some positives throughout the season for the club. They had a very good run in the UEFA Cup only to see themselves knocked out in the quarter-finals by Fiorentina after coming back from a 2-0 deficit. Everton displayed good form in the Carling Cup/League Cup making it to the semi-finals to face Chelsea. The latter came out victorious and was the strongest in both legs and this ended their dreams of their first cup final in 13 years.

Everton had an excellent season overall. They had two long cup runs and a 5th place finish which showed that Moyes is the man for the club.

Summer Activity

A solid back bone to the team and goals from all areas of the team helped to ensure that the fans would be happy with the team's progress and could give rise to quality signings this summer. After the European Championship several players were linked with several big clubs in Europe. Players such as Joao Moutinho of Sporting Lisbon was looking to be their new signing. He had a very good Euro 2008 Campaign with Portugal. Other players were also linked but these all dissolved. All the other premiership clubs made at-least one major signing, while Everton's only acquisitions were Pienaar from Dortmund and Marouane Fellaini from Belgium club Standard Liege.

The ageing popular defensive midfielder Lee Carsley ended his career at Everton by leaving as a free agent for Birmingham; Stefan Wessels was released; Vidarsson went to FC Twente also on free transfer; whilst Gravesen, Fernandes and Gardner all returned to their respective clubs after their loan spells were completed. Unfortunately, no permanent deal was made with Valencia to enable Manuel Fernandes to become a Toffee after he significantly improved towards the end of the season and he seemed to show his desire to stay at the club. This doesn't seem a likely deal after his form was so impressive of late.

Moyes has been unlucky in the transfer market with most of his targets going elsewhere. The Scotsman is confident in his current squad and working on the right players to bring to Goodison Park. Other rumours of players to be brought in is Alan Smith of Newcastle, Vagner Love from CSKA Moscow and Stephane M’bia from Rennes, but each of their club's released statements saying none of them will be leaving in the summer.

Analysis

Disappointment for most fans to see Andy Johnson leaving. He signed with Fulham for a fee of £10.5M. Players have more of a liking for Spurs and some appear to be fighting to sign for the club who finished below Everton in the league and didn't reach as far as Everton did in the UEFA Cup. Unlucky for the Toffess if no more new faces are added then the products of the Youth Academy will have to step up and get ready for a challenge. The likes of Victor Anichebe, James Vaughan, Jack Rodwell and Jose Baxter will definitely be more involved this season in their quest for Champions League Football. If God is on their side, Andy van der Meyde could make a quick return and show some of the quality he had at Ajax.

The Squad looks like it will be almost the same as last season thus the formation will be the same as the previous season sometimes playing 4-5-1 with Yakubu being alone upfront or Luis Saha or Vaughan or even Anichebe. Or the manager might opt for the 4-4-2 partnering any of the two mentioned above. Most times last season the 4-5-1 formation deemed unsuccessful and didn't work tactically for the team. Yakubu was often was anonymous when he went in search of the ball. Thus the manager used the 4-4-2 and it proved to be a very good decision.

A lot is expected from key players this season try to force their way into the top four again. They will look to avoid injuries and don't repeat the form they had in March which saw them lose out on fourth spot after some poor results. If they do better than last season the top four looks like their stature for the end of the season.

They will definitely have difficult times getting past teams outside the big four such as Tottenham and Aston Villa. Moyes will hope his teams learns from their mistakes and thus help them to a decent position in the league before Christmas. A news signing in January may also help Moyes' team.

Manager

Moyes is definitely worried over his teams chances this season as their chief executive resigned last season, their chairman agreeing to sell the club and there is hardly any new faces. Moyes is praying for something dramatic this year.

Chop rating: 1/6

Key Player

Yakubu needs to better his relationship with the manager after he was dropped his behaviour after the African Cup of Nations. He has a very good eye for goal and be in form for his team.

Default Season Preview Part FOUR - Fulham and Hull City

Season Preview Part FOUR

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fulham

-Form is Key-

2007/2008: Coming to the End

Fulham showed their determination last season and proved that they were a Premiership team. They avoided relegation and placed 17th with last minute goal in injury time in the final game of the season against Manchester City. Despite their spending spree in the 2007 Summer Transfer Window, they were once again disappointing. With most of their players only having Championship experience, they have a reputation to build. Lawrie Sanchez lasted just 17 matches after only managing 2 wins in his spell.

Ray Lewington took charge for a while until they found a permanent manager to help the club stay in the Premier League. His start as manager began with a 5-1 thrashing from Tottenham on Boxing Day which was followed by a 1-1 draw at Birmingham. Then the board brought in veteran manager Roy Hodgson and he helped them survive. Hodgson was promised a large sum of £1M to keep the club in the top flight: well enough, it was their win at Fratton Park versus Portsmouth which sealed their place for the following season. This was something none of the top four achieved.

In January, new gaffer Hodgson thought they needed some help and signed Brede Hangeland, Paul Stalteri, Leon Andreason, and Erik Nevland. All of these played a significant role in keeping the team up. Jimmy Bullard and Brian McBride returned and this gave everyone a boost. Plus they also did their part as well. The fans began to believe in their team and that staying up was possible. It looked as though they would be going down in February and March. When April arrived they began to get the results they needed.

Summer Activity

Another new season is about to start and Mohammed Al-Fayed has splashed out his cash. Roy Hodgson has now tried to bring in players that will help to balance his squad: the likes of Andy Johnson and Bobby Zamora upfront, Mark Schwarzer in goal, Stoor in defence and Kallio to help out too. Zolton Gera, formerly of new-comers West Brom should help out in the attacking midfield as well the defensive. Andranik should also play his part behind the offence. The manager expects this team to play his style, which is to play the ball well, and he is aiming for this through his new signings. It looks like they mean business this time around as they hope not to repeat last season.

Both the chairman and manager hope to have a good cup run or a good league position after their buys this summer. There has been alot of rumours surrounding Jimmy Bullard's future at Craven Cottage. He seems ready for a new contract but after Mohammed Al-Fayed has spent much on the past two seasons Hodgson has stated that he will not extend his contract til it is the near the time of completion. The fans hope he will stay despite interest from Wigan, Aston Villa and West Ham.

Hameur Bouazza and Lee Cook have both been sent on loan to gain more skills and experience. The Cottagers are trying to quit being a selling club and make the best out of their players.

Analysis

Their toughest challenges seems to be winning away; so the fans dont have to dread the away games. The manager will be hoping for a quick start out of the blocks and if new strikers Zamora and Johnson can link up well with Bullard shipping balls through they can be sure of a place above 12th. So then can Fulham make it to a UEFA Cup spot in 2 years? Or win the FA Cup to qualify? Lets see what they can do. They have done business in the transfer window to help their progress to make a top 10 finish at the end of the season. The fans should definitely be pleased with the way their pre-season has gone and the way the money has been spent. If they suffer away injuries they should have enough cover. They have now found the balance needed as they have a capable manager in Roy Hodgson. Success beckons now from the Fulham faithful.

Manager

Another manager master of the great escape and has been brought in to finally bring good form to the club. He has sold those who seems to be as they say deadwood, and if those who has been been brought aren't any different then they should be able to see another season of top flight football.

Chop rating: 4/6

Key Player

His return from a career threatening injury was, maybe, the main reason for Fulham's Premier League stay. He had a good pre-season and he looks dangerous with his midfield string pulling and wicked way with free-kicks will surely keep the fans warm in their seats.

Hull City

-Staying Up-

2007/2008: Coming to the End

Hull City had a pretty good season and they definitely did what was required to make it into the Premier League. Before their victory in the playoff, Hull City was the largest city in Europe to have never been in the top flight. The population of this city is just under 250 000. Well can the 7th largest city in England survive in their first year in the Barclays Premier League? We'll see.

There were many class acts in the team that assisted with their promotion. One who stands out is Dean Windass. Windass was the man for the Tigers' promotion. No one expected this local builder, at age 39 to get the goal that would see them playing in the world's most popular league. Well this man has always been in the news headlines. Whether its getting sent off, grabbing his opponents testicles or pushing his team up the table. There is even an online petition to have a street named after him.

Other classy performers were Michael Turner who was solid in defence, goalkeeper Boaz Myhill helped to keep the goals conceded below the other teams that were promoted, captain Ashbee's tough play in midfield and Frazier Campbell's scoring tally contributed greatly. Their energy and desire to get promoted came out of nothing it seemed but they gathered strength at the right time and put themselves through to the finish. Most did not see Hull as getting a chance at promotion but they made the right changes and succeeded.

Hull's fortunes have gone through a drastic change. In 5 years they have moved from the 4th tier of English football to the top flight. This was almost unheard of. Others such as Wycombe Wanderers were close but they couldn't make it past the second division.

This team most definitely will go all out this year to remain in the first tier. They should remember where they left off, focus on where they want to be, and ignore selling any of their best players in January just so they can secure the £30M payment when they get relegated. The Tigers should look those that battled with relegation and stayed up. However, they should get in a quality replacement for Frazier Campbell who returns to Manchester United after his loan spell ends.

Summer Activity

Well one of the most recognized names Jay Jat Okocha who aided the team to their first time in the top flight won't be in the Premier League again. The fan's know what this Nigerian is capable of and to lose him now, they are hoping that they could manage without him. Okocha has been limited to team play by fitness problems and he is a doubt.

Michael Bridges has also left due to some trivial injuries that has made it difficult for the former England Under-21 to get his career going. He managed 9 games for Sydney FC in the A-League, while on a 6-month loan deal and he has been shipped to Carlisle United this team for a year.

A third to leave was Pedersen who had 6 years with Bolton and would've surely helped with his PRemier League experience. The Dane moved back home due to family reasons and his own. He admitted that his heart was elsewhere and that he wasn't functioning well. David Livermore also left for Brighton.

Phil Brown is not looking to spend a whole lot in the summer and has looked at clubs that did spend much and the idea didn't work well for them. Brown got two good buys being Geovanni from Manchester City and Boateng from Middlesbrough. Firstly, Geovanni was brought in on a free transfer. The Brazilian had a good start in his first few games but couldn't keep a regular starting place for the Citizens. Thus a move to the Tigers will hopefully give him a boost but how he plays will be decided on how the manager uses him upfront. This attacking midfielder could be a threat as he can play anywhere across the front line. Boateng was also a free. The former Boro captain should do well now as he wont feel any pressures to lead the team and is seen at his best when he can focus on his game. Much experience has been brought in and Brown added to it by signing Peter Halmoisi, Tony Warner, Craig Fagan and Anthony Gardner.

Phil finally secured two strikers to bag some goals. One in Daniel Cousin from Rangers. The Frenchman is one to watch and should be able to prove their worth in the league. The other Marlon King. Once King has no injuries and doesn't go parties this season he should have a good spell. Brown was also eyeing the Peruvian striker Claudio Pizarro but he has left the Bridge on a loan deal to Werder Bremen. He could've been a good buy for them.

Analysis

Hull has had a woeful pre-season. It was not helpful as they had a 1-0 loss to Osasuna and a 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Crewe Alexandra. These will sureky put a dent in the teams' confidence but these lossed can also be used as motivation as the Premier League won't be a stroll in the park. So what tactics will he use in the top flight? He could be opted to use Bolton's long ball game as he hinted he may use it. This method could be very helpful to them as it is not just a quick way to get the ball out of the defence but if Windass plays he can get the ball to a swift winger or another forward. This could be effective. Its not beautiful football but playing this way it lessens the danger of getting trapped and humiliated as one tries to dribble out of defence, get tackled by the opponent who may eventually score.

Their style in the playoffs showed they can play good football. The Championship last year, was said to be oen of the most competitive in ages or maybe the standard was dropped. The Premier League may be too good for Hull and thus they could of-course struggle. No one would expect them to stay up.

Manager

The first too take Hull into the Premiership and he is a local hero until they falter. Brown hopes be the man at Hull for a long time and he doesn't want any likeness of his bad tenure at Derby to occur at Hull.

Chop rating: 4/6

Key Player

Geovanni looks to be a threat in the teams attack and he could be the one who supplies the team with goals. Having been with Barcelona already his experience in the teams attack as well as defence will be vital.

Default Season Preview Part FIVE - Liverpool and Manchester City

Season Preview Part FIVE

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Liverpool

Is This The Season?

2007/2008: Coming to the End

Many would say Rafael Benitez is lucky to still be Liverpool gaffer after another trophyless season and failing once again to put any aura of a fight for the title. Avram Grant's Chelsea, who almost succeeded at obtaining the treble, should really be considered very unlucky. However, It was his Blues which ended the Red's Champions League and Carling Cup campaign. They were knocked out at the semi-finals and quarter-finals respectively. But it was their FA Cup exit at the hands of Barnsley which many thought he should be sacked - plus his side almost lost the final Champions League spot to their Merseyside rivals Everton.

Benitez's tactics was questioned throughout the season by his employers. Tom Hicks and George Gillett, The club's American owners, went as far as interviewing now - Bayern Munich boss Jurgen Klinsman - this certainly caused things to stir in the boardroom and this disgruntled the Liverpool faithful. Hence, Liverpool were always in the papers for all the wrong reasons, as the co-owners sniped at each other through the media and tried to draw Benitez on their side.

Then despite all the bad news Fernando Torres gave some happy news which opposed the bad. Most might have predicted the Spaniard to be just like all the other strikers who came after Fowler. He was bought for £21m from Atletico Madrid and he was expected to have a tough time adapting to the Premier League because of his inconsistent finishing during his time in La Liga. Torres produced a stunning 33 goals in 46 matches and he shut up most of his critics. He has now established himself as one of the most dangerous forwards as the club was looking for someone of his class since Michael Owen left Anfield. The striker's importance has gone further than getting goals. His movement, cleverness and ability enabled the Euro 2008 winner to be used as a lone striker. This has helped to bring some exciting developments - in particular the partnershp formed with captain Steven Gerrard who played in a more attacking role.

Youngsters Ryan Babel and Lucas Leiva's emergence into the squad and the revitalisation of hitman Dirk Kuyt has given much to look forward to as the season draws nigh.

Summer Activity

The majority of the Red's summer was centered around three men: recently bought Robbie Keane, the yet to arrive Gareth Barry and the unlikely to depart Xabi Alonso. Their stories are all interesting and they could be significant prospects for the Mersyside club this season.

Alot is expected from the Irishman Keane after his £19m move from Spurs. He was given the fabled Number 7 jersey and was labelled as 'the new Kenny Danglish' by Liverpool Legend Ian Rush and many expect him to bring the sort of leadership, presence and consistency he had displayed during his tiem at White Hart Lane. The fans also hope he can form a distinctive partnership with Torres as he did with Berbatov at Tottenham. The 28 year-old's move to Anfield raised questions such as if Barry will complete his desired move from Villa. Liverpool are still hopeful of gettign the player and negotiations have not ceased as yet.

Xabi Alonso's proposed move to Turin to Juventus was fixed to be one that would provide the funds for the club to buy Barry. He seemed to have one hand on a Juventus jersye and the other on a Liverpool jersey prior the Euro 2008 Championship. However, Liverpool refused anything lower than £15m and talks ended in /July. The Spaniard looks set to stay.

The Pre-season gave Benitez the opportunity to integrate his new signings such as Dossena, Degen and Plesis into the squad. Daniel Pacheco has excited fans and new boy David N'Gog has been impressive in attack. Daniel Agger's gradual return is another plus as he missed almost the entire 2007/2008 season with a metatarsal injury.

The signing of Riera by Benitez has however put a shadow over the acquisition of Barry. It does not look to be on the cards but the England midfielder is still relishing Champions League football.

Analysis

Benitez this time will be pushing for a strong start as they have struggled to do for the past 4 years. So if Barry completes the move then he feature in the opening weeks and his presence will give more options especially if Alonso stays. Though Riera may be another player who can do exactly what Barry does for Aston Villa. They should then possess the kind of depth and flexibility in midfield that should at-least match or better their most feared rivals. They have always had quality in the middle but they have lacked suitable players to create space in their opponent's formation without causing any blunders.

Keane will have a similar task upfront. It remains to be seen if he will partner Torres or replace Babel or Kuyt regularly but either circumstance would provide a potentially powerful attack that was perhaps missing when Benayoun and Pennant were put to play on the wings last term. Keane, like Barry. will add another link to the leadership chain, and it would lessen the reliance on Captain Fantastic.

Spreading the load may be the key to Liverpool's title hopes. Statistically, the Red's shared their goals last season more than one would expect. They had the most players to reach double figures in all competitions but it was Gerrard and Torres who came through for the club during their trying times. Keane was that sort of player Spurs and Barry for Villa - if the latter should join and they both bring those match winning tendencies with them, then the 18 - time champs could be a force to be reckoned with.

Still they face a tough task of remaining the top four and claiming silverware this season, as Tottenham, Manchester City and Aston Villa are all eager ti play Champions League football, whilst at the top Chelsea are hoping to retain the title from Manchester United while Arsenal's Young Guns give them an edge of unpredictability.

Liverpool certainly have the motivation to deny the Red Devils their third straight title, as another title triumph would see them match their North West rivals' long standing record of eighteen league championships. Thus Benitez and his players must put a strong unique and challenge for Premier League honours - and the new signings along with the confidence of the Spanish contingent after the Euro 2008 success, could be the tools needed.

So expect them to go deep into Europe again and expect a good cup run but don't expect them to be out of the title race by January this time. They probably won't win it but would put up a decent fight.

Manager

The clever acquisition of Fernando Torres sort of directed attention towards him rather than to some of the gaffer's bizarre decisions last season. Benitez will surely be hoping to end the Red's 19-year drought without a league triumph. He hopes to go out with a different and better attitude towards obtaining the Barclays Premier League title.

Chop rating: 4/6

Key Player

No doubt the most in form striker in Europe was sort of an inspiration in his first season out of La Liga. Liverpool fans will be hoping he avoids having a second season dip and assuming Keane will do more than be a known threat, then he will cause havoc for defenses.

Manchester City

-Can Money Buy Success?-

2007/2008: Coming to the End

City fans were almost in disbelief when they were approaching the busy Christmas fixtures at the end of 2007. For the first three months the Citizens managed to remain in the top four, with convincing wins including one over town rivals Manchester United as they seemed destined to repay the immediate benefits from a revamped squad, a new manager and a new owner. City continued working towards bringing European football as the top four began to slip away their success was short-lived and as it seemed too good to be true, February saw the Citizens dropping down the table with an unexpected series of completely inferior and depressing performances which were climaxed by one of the Premier League's worst defeats to Boro on the final day of the season.

This all saw Sven-Göran Eriksson sacked. With his dismissal came a rather quick hiring of Mark Hughes who would now work to leading the team through its new era. Their lack of depth noticeably affected their declining results. This is something Mark Hughes will be looking to fix with the prospect of playing in the UEFA Cup and challenging for domestic trophies. Though, Brazilian Elano was on a high during the start of the season, adapting to the physical nature of the Premier League, his mid-season depression and him on-and-off the injury list did have an effect on the team's performance. So no Elano meant they wouldn't have any creativity or a creative leader in attack which also changed the balance of the team and they did not have many goal scoring opportunites. Hughes will need to have his playmaker fit for most of the season as he is sure to provide for the newer arrivals Jo, Benjani and Robinho.

Nevertheless, at the other end of the pitch Micah Richards' February injury exploited weak defensive cover with no true centre-bakc available to fill Richards' place. Captain Richard /dune was somewhat left alone to guide the young pair of Nedum Onuha and Javier Garrido to cover with Vedran Corluka and Michael Ball for the remainder of the season. Their lack of experience in the back showed when they lost 8-1 to Middlesbrough on the last day of the season, which saw a frustrated Dunne sent off.

Many of the City fans saw the potential felt the hype of the success in the early 2007/2008 season. The teams expectations will be higher as Hughes has been given a highly capable and highly skilled team. Some talent has been brought in and some unneeded weight was offloaded as the over-the-hill players were let go. The manager will now look to shape, develop and maintain his young and relatively successful managerial career and to also please a demanding and unsatisfied Thaksin Shinawatra, who wants success at City.

Summer Activity

Shinawatra's first task was to appoint a new manager in Welshman, Mark Hughes to aid in reconstructing a faltering side. He was given a greater amount of money and possibilities than he was afforded at Blackburn Rovers. This exciting young manager's first order of business was to secure the services of long time target Jo from CSKA Moscow, which broke the City transfer record at the time which was around £18m. The Budding Brazilian will be looking make a name for himself at the club and in the English Premier League. He is expected to be a threat to defences after some ravishing performances for his club and country.

The second signing was Tal Ben-Haim which could be a clever buy for the club. The defender's experience and versatility should be something that would benefit the team. The defender never found solid ground at Chelsea and playing time did not come available to him. City rescued him from Chelsea for £5m. So he moved and now Hughes could integrate him into the side to offer cover for Dunne and Richards and also even play at left-back with Javier Garrido and Michael Ball hoping for regular starting places. Another talented defender who was brought in with Ben-Haim was Argentine Pablo Zabaleta from Espanyol. The South American should add even more strength in the City back-line.

Now as the summer went on it was rumoured that Brazilian star Robinho was linked with Chelsea as he expressed his desire to play for Scolari once more. However, the former Real Madrid player snubbed Chelsea and signed for Manchester City for a record breaking fee of £32.5m. No one expected him to be a Citizen but it must've been something Hughes said to the Brazilian that brought him to the blue half of Manchester. Much is expected of him from the fans and he sure to make the City attack even more deadly.

The transfer into the club have been quality and should help make a promising season for them but more importantly maybe it was their departures that look to be more important. The manager and board had to rebuild the squad as they got rid of unwanted players and over-the-hill players which did not even make a single appearance in the first team over the last few years. Notable veterans Sun Jihai, Paul Dickov and Emile Mpenza have all been shown the door.

Shaun Wright-Phillips returned to the Eastlands after he could not secure a starting place at Chelsea. He hopes to bring back the same excitement he gave in his first spell at the club.

Some good news this summer was that both starting defenders Micah Richards and Richard Dunne also with midfielder Michael Johnson signed new long-term contracts. City are aiming to keep their stars and build for the future.

Analysis

The managerial appointment of Mark Hughes comes at a crucial time for the Citizens. Thaksin Shinawatra is demanding success in the domestic league and European Cup from the Welshman and without a doubt expects him to improve on the foundation left by last year's squad. The acquisition of Jo and Robinho will definitely add some more fire to the City attack. Ben-Haim will also add some experience at the back. The side already balanced and these additions could bring even more exciting football at the Eastlands. One aim for Hughes may be to keep his players fit as injuries to Elano and Richards last season sw them have a run of poor results; that ruined their good run for the season.

Further reduction in the squad numbers and pay-roll by laying-off a huge amount of dead weight which should make controlling the team a lot easier for Hughes as his tough training regiment and serious demeanour woke his squad up. Hughes means business.

If Sven-Göran Eriksson was Mr. Nice Guy Hughes is his nemesis as the former Blackburn boss wants no distractions and needs total dedication from the squad as he banned almost everything not related to football from the training ground.

Many hope Elano and Martin Petrov will continue to perform as well as the new recruits who will make their way into the side. Jo and Robinho may definitely be starters as they beat out veteran Darius Vassell and recently impressive Valeri Bojinov, youngster Ched Evans, as well as on-again-off-again Blue Rolando Bianchi for a starting birth upfront. Forward Nery Castillo will be also looking to get his loan spell on the right foot. Elano and Petrov will be hoping to continue their work in the middle and continue supplying balls for the strikers and also young Stephen Ireland looks to keep his good form. Michael Johnson, Gelson Fernandes and the experienced Dietmar Hamann along with the skill Shaun Wright-Phillips will make for a talented midfield which Dunne and Richards will look to link up with Ball, Zabaleya, Garrido and Ben-Haim and Onouha to complete the back four.

The 'keeper situations seems to be solved as Joe Hart was given the Number one shirt with Kasper Schemeichel as his competition. Hughes will be hoping he can help the team to perform in a way that may make them be feared and to help him appease the owner and fans in bringing back silverware to the blue half of the City.

Manager

Hughes turned Wales and Blackburn into contenders, but at City the stakes are higher and the penalty for failure is career death. Nothing has fazed this man as manager or player and his seriousness and motivation should help City to reach their aspirations for the season.

Chop rating: 4/6

Key Player

Former gaffer Eriksson he did something great which was to build the team around Dunne. Surely though he did not get quite get to do the same with Blackburn - he is sure to do it here and continue where Sven left off. A traditional center-half, he is superb in the tackle, awesome in the air, almost impossible to shake off, difficult to escape and he is a good guide for the team.

Default Season Preview Part SIX - Manchester United and Newcastle United

Season Preview Part SIX

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Manchester United

-Champions-

2007/2008: Coming to the End

Sir Alex Ferguson's side can revel in their hard fought position as the dominant team in Europe. The Double Champions were without a doubt the phenomenal team last season with their meanest defence and the most devastating attack on their way to lifting the Premier League title for the second consecutive year, whilst also setting a new Champions League record for the most successive home wins on the road to Moscow that eventually saw them crowned Champions of Europe for the third time in their history.

Spearheading this push to add to the overflowing Old Trafford trophy Cabinet stood the notable figure of Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese international netted a remarkable 42 goals as came out as the world's finest player. However, the first months into the season were miles away from the glory days in May. They had a disappointing 0-0 draw at home to Reading followed by another draw at Fratton Park versus Portsmouth. Then the first of two defeats to local rivals Manchester City. A 2-0 win over Avram Grant's Chelsea steadily turned this trend, before Wigan Athletic would visit the Champions at the start of October began a run of three consecutive 4-0 victories that might've touched off United's season.

Convincing results continued in the winter and spring before a final dash to the finish line which included victories at home to Arsenal and Liverpool, before a dull defeat at Stamford Bridge to Chelsea, their strongest title challengers. The Blues kept unbelievable pressure on the Red Devils all the way until the final day of the season.

A rainy day at the JJB seemed it would make a nice day fro the Red Devils, Ronaldo and Giggs gave the reigning Champs a 2-0 win and the league title versus the Latics before a thrilling Champions League match with Chelsea saw Edwin van der Sar as the hero as United defeated the Blues on penalties to be crowned European Champions.

These impressive trophy hauls showed what the Manchester United side of 2007/2008 was all about. Their dazzling attacking style helped to propel them up the scoring charts with the trio of Carlos Tevez, Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo almost proving too hot to handle for both the Premier League and the Champions League defences. However, it was the defensive foundation for these offensive players that made a significant contribution to their title triumph. Performances from Patrice Evra, Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand and Wes Brown were all impressive gaining clean sheets both hoem and away to Barcelona and AS Roma in the Champions League as well a only conceding a measly 22 goals in United's successful Premier League campiagn.

Summer Activity

This close season seems to haave been more about consolidation rather than glorious expansion. Just as Ronaldo stole the headlines for the Champions during the season this summer has also seen the name of the Portuguese dominate the back pages of the world's sporting press as there seemed to be coquetry between him and Real Madrid after he exrpessed his desire to play for them in the future. This was surely and enduring transfer saga.

The Los Merengues hierarchy spoke on a daily basis about him as well as Ronaldo himself giving compromising sound bites to the media, it seemed almost imminent that the deal would go through. However, just as speculation began to go grow of the player returning to Manchester, Ronaldo made it clear to the Portuguese media remain a United player for the coming season.

The retention of Ronaldo certainly is a major boost for the hopes of continued success for the new season but Sir Alex was still looking to have a striker of strong physical presence upfront. Furthermore, he was able to achieve this as he signed Dimitar Berbatov for approximately £30m in a deal which also saw youngster Frazier Campbell going to White Hart Lane on a year long loan. Berbatov would surely be dangerous to opponent's defence with his remarkable skill on the ball. Louis Saha was earlier sold to Everton as his services were no longer needed as injuries has been plaguing the Frenchman's career.

A blow to the Manchester United staff was the departure of Assistant Manager Carlos Queiroz to the Portugal National side. Names such as Gus Poyet, Michael Laudrup and Paco Ayestaran were linked with the post. Furthermore, a successful tour to Nigeria and South Africa has brought results on the pitch. United travel to Boro on the opening day of the season. The Red Devil's prospect of beginning the season with dynamism is not beyond them and they could be looking at a third consecutive title which would equal Liverpool's league title record of 18.

Nevertheless, the loss of reserve players Gerrard Pique, Mikael Silvestre and Chris Eagles, United have been able to keep the same side that was so successful and impressive. The transfer window is still open and many still feel another face may be added to the team's roster and if another is added it may be bad news for those eagerly waiting a chance to make a regular place in the starting line-up.

Analysis

For a team that won both the Premier League and Champions League their summer transfer activity has been minimal as he secured the services of Dimitar Berbatov looked to be their main target. The announcement that Ronaldo will be staying for at-least another season at Old Trafford does still draw a line under oen of this summer's most tedious transfer sagas and will allow Sir Alex to plan for the club's opening matches for the season.

Plans include the goalkeeping department as it is expected to be as strong as any in the league with the Dutch veteran van der Sar being pushed by a now fully fit Ben Foster and Polish international Tomas Kuszczak who is also there to offer strong cover.

United still look fearful at the back with the return of center-back Jonny Evans providing more depth for the iron pair of Vidic and Ferdinand at the heart of the defence. On the flanks, Evra will be covered by John O'Shea, whilst Wes Brown can expect the right-back spot to be up for a fight as club captain Gary Neville returns from a injury plus the 'sensational' nature of young Brazilian Rafael Da Silva's pre-season performances also adds another option to this area.

In the middles Ferguson will be hoping that Owen Hargreaves can continue tje good run of both form and fitness that saw the ex-Bayern Munich player really came to the front at the end of last season when was needed, still also one to to watch is Anderson who can only improve after a year of Premier League experience is behind him. Nevertheless, the visible decline in the use of Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs last season will be a worry for all involved with the club as the cruel hands of time seem to have caught up with these majestic performers.

No worries for United in attack with Berbatov added to the trio of Tevez, Rooney and Ronaldo; the Red Devils will surely be one to be reckoned with. Youngster Danny Welbeck is also included in the side and so is Manucho after a work permit was successfully obtained. Berbatov will definitely add more to their guns upfront with his height he will surely be a factor in working those air-balls with his fellow strikers.

United's early season hopes hopes may be on track as they looked prepared. Sir Alex Ferguson can expect to be in the driving seat for the chase for Premier League and Champions League glory. Though the European Super Cup and World Club Championship may be unwanted distractions to these aims, it is absolutely not beyond them to repeat the success of last season and add further to their already abundant trophy hall of their legendary Scottish manager.

Manager

Long time gaffer Ferguson could hardly have done better last season but he will surely going for something special the year as his team will be going for the FIFA Club World Cup. Ferguson believes this his United team is the best and strongest he has managed. However, his aim this time may be to get his tenth league title as Manchester United boss and equal their North East rivals Liverpool's record of eighteen league titles.

Chop rating: 0/5

Key Player

The Portuguese star has decided to stay at Manchester for another year and perhaps we can just admire his feat last year of scoring 42 goals as he is not even an out-and-out striker. If he can even score over league 20 goals then he will surely help United a another league trophy. He is someone genuine and miraculous for the Red Devils.

Newcastle United

-Building Confidence-

2007/2008: Coming to the End

This was not a typical season for the Toon. They lacked much depth and were not expected to produce any special performances. Allardyce's departure did not provide any catalyst for the team to better their performance over the past seasons.

Is it the board members that cause the team to be so inconsistent? Many may point fingers there. Owner Mike Ashley should be making sensible long term decisions in the board room that could be helpful to the club.

Allardyce was brought in by former owner Freddy Shepherd and his sacking was sealed after Shepherd left the club. Many though Ashley would sack Big Sam when he took over, he instead made the fan's sit through a six month psychological turmoil as the club went through its unique motions.

Some of the fans blamed the former Bolton manager for their some examples dull football and unimpressive performances. The Newcastle manager's priority to these fans, was to please them rather than the board room. They expect them to provide a sweeping and superior type of football at the club.

Allardyce's exit was untimely and insignificant. They lacked quality in every department and it does not seem like there are any leaders in the team. Newcastle's worst enemy is itself.

Through the Christmas period the team struggled as they had a three game losing streak. They lost to Wigan, Chelsea and Manchester City without a fight. Then in the second week in January Sam Allardyce was sacked by Owner Mike Ashley.

After his sacking they were to travel to Old Trafford to face the Champions Manchester United. They were manager-less and assistant manger Chris Hughton took over as caretaker manager for this match. However, they had already contacted one of their most respected former managers Kevin Keegan to retake the post of Manager of the club, and he accepted. Still though it was good news they lost 6-0 at Old Trafford.

Keegan worked tirelessy with the squad but had to wait a 2 long months and 8 games for his side's first victory since returning as manager. However, he managed to keep the club in the top flight. Some confident results such as a 4-1 win over Spurs gave the Toon a boost in their quest to stay in the Premier League.

Fans surely hope there won't be any comical defending, absent midfield and any wage-absorbing centre-forwards who have trouble finding the net.

Summer Activity

Not much love going towards the Geordies as they found it difficult to recruit players. It looked as though players had a fear of joining the club after uninspiring performances for the past three seasons. They got rid of soem deadwood in the squad and there was some arrivals that did not really give the Newcastle faithful much hope for the new season. These were Danny Guthrie (Liverpool), Jonas Guitierrez (RCD Mallorca, Sebastien Bassong (Metz), Fabricio Coloccini (Deportivo) and Xisco who also hails from Deportivo.

The Toon's pre-season was even more woeful as they only secured one win out of five which was away to Hartlepool United. They then suffered losses to Doncaster Rovers, Hertha Berlin and Real Mallorca. Three straight matches against mediocre sides without scoring. Their last match was at home to PSV and the match ended as a 2-2 draw.

Nothing inspiring thus far and maybe Newcastle may be fighting to stay in the Premier League which means the possibility of relegation. Maybe this disappointing pre-season both on and off the pitch is what the club, administration, fans and players need as they could turn this around and use it as a way to give them a lift going into the new season. They will be going into the season without any expectations or ludicrous objectives such as breaking into the top four or getting into Europe. Such talks were going on in the early stages of last season which turned out to be utter nonsense given the lack of quality and depth in the squad and also how they play. One example was where Steven Carr was used as a left-back away to Aston villa.

A particular exit from the team did not seem to please Kevin Keegan. James Milner was allowed to leave for Villa and he was an influential player in Keegan's team. He will be missed in the middle as could often bring in some special performances for them as he did last season.

So perhaps this season they will earn points and integrity on the pitch rather than waiting for the transfer window where careless and irrevocable decisions seems to be always made by Newcastle gaffers.

Newcastle should aim to rebuild itself as a club this season both in terms of financial and administrative structure which Ashley seems to be working on. Ashley, Keegan and Wise should come together and assess the club to help bring back the kind of football which allowed them to be stationed in the top four.

Analysis

Kevin Keegan of-course hopes he can bring back the togetherness the club once had. Once he does this he knows things can be fantastic for the team. However, if the results do not appease Ashley's appetite then he will definitely be shown the door.

The manager has wheeled in two defenders in Coloccini and Bassong; and this shows the frustration and his displeasure with the defence has handled themselves last season. He hopes to get rid of those comical displays at the back that has plagued the team for some years now. If Bassong, Cacapa, Taylor and the rest can improve then they can hope for a better spot in the league.

Newcastle has had trouble getting a player to be a dictator in the middle of the pitch. Some years now the Toon has definitely lacked a dynamic midfield. They have lacked strength, cohesiveness, of providing plenty protection and running to help an often isolated back line, whilst also still producing a stable service for the attackers. The club's management should really focus on building this area of the team as the midfield is the engine-room of the football ship.

Danny Guthrie will surely play with passion for the club and it seemed to be in his nature, and the fans should take a liking to that, but he would not be able to add any pace to the team's attack. The ageing Nicky Butt should add some type of class into their weak midfield, while Geremi should deliver the odd quality cross or pass and set pieces can be lethal and vital in getting results for the side. Thereis also the return of Joey Barton who has insisted he plans to amend his ways on and off the pitch which could give the team a boost. Maybe a Barton can get back to the form which got him his first England cap while at Manchester City but Keegan is sure to be careful and won't gamble on his future.

Some centre-forwards were absent in the team's pre-season and all are hoping to be in great form for the upcoming season. The likes of Alan Smith, Shaola Ameobi and Mark Viduka are all working to be fit. Strikers Owen and Martins are fit and ready. Keegan is hoping the team's attack could be much more threatening and creative. Some of their players are struggling with some niggling injuries but the manager believes they should be ready for the new season. Nonetheless, the transfer window is still open and he can add to his attackign options to improve the team's goal tally. So King Kev's to do list could be avoiding relegation, bringing silverware and more goals.

The club has had a tough time this summer in their pre-season preparation and obtaining players in the summer transfer window to add something extra to the team. The club should be focused on their football this season rather than the future direction of the club's ownership. They would not have much expectations but a top ten finish may be their main priority.

Manager

The former 'messiah' has returned and hope he can turn things around for Newcastle. He has a tougher task and now is the real test for the king.

Owen started 17 games last season and thus it shows his match fitness is solid. He also finished as the clubs top scorer. Fans are hoping he can get back into that goalscoring form that he had Liverpool and that his partner Martins will help him bring in the goals.

Default Season Preview Part SEVEN - Portsmouth and Stoke City

Season Preview Part SEVEN

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Portsmouth

-Aiming Higher-

2007/2008: Coming to the End

For some time now Harry Redknapp has been rebuilding his squad and has rejected offers from Newcastle United and several other Premiership clubs in his quest to guide his South Coast side above their best finish of 9th, achieved last season. The momentum brought by Redknapp has seen them grow from a persistent struggler in their first season in the English Premier League since progressing to the top flight from the championship in 2003 to one of the league's most improved teams.

Many would think it was Redknapp's tactics that allowed the team such success but it would be hard to look beyond owner and multi-millionaire, Alexandre ***damak. As much is owed to him for his help in getting the Fratton Park outfit to reach the higher ranks of English football's top league. Such financial depth has given the opportunity to the manager to buy quality players such as Jermain Defoe, Niko Kranjcar and Lassana Diarra, which definitely played a part in the club gaining it's first FA Cup since 1931 last season and this gave them a UEFA Cup spot.

Nevertheless, their did cup adventure did cost the team some vital points in their hope of challenging for the much coveted fifth spot. They only won two of their final eight league games but these assertions would be better suited to other sides, as any Pompey fan would surely be pleased with the silverware and eighth place.

Well for this season the question that plagues the Pompey faithful is can they improve on their for, last season or will they be able to do it again? The club;s peef form during the first half of the 2007/2008 season suggested to the fans that they are lucky to come through with a first half finish. Much publicized allegations which involved the arrests and court orders of Redknapp and Chief Executive Peter Storie plus the end of the season rewards makes the new season for Portsmouth even more interesting.

The club's downfall in the league for the latter half of the season may be due to the amount of goals conceded away from home as they let in 26 compared to the 14 they managed to score at Fratton Park. For this upcoming season, matches away from their enclosed and intimidating home turf will remain a worry for the club's loyal supporters.

Summer Activity

Perhaps the most damaging move of the summer was the move of Sulley Muntari from the Blue of the South coast to the Blue of Inter Milan. His career at Fratton Park was short-lived but he made a big impact. He was influential in the club's successful FA Cup run as he took the spot kick to knock out league champions Manchester United in the 6th round and he also added sorm goals to help the team move up the league. The stunning goals he scored against Aston Villa will surely be remembered by the Pompey fans and his iron performances in midfield were worth more than the £12.75m given to the club by the Nerazzuri for the Ghanian.

Harry Redknapp sought Liverpool striker Peter Crouch from the beginning of the transfer window and he got his man for £11m and this shows the backing he had from owner. The capture of Crouch raised a few eyebrows because of the cash spent by the club. The lanky 27-year old was always criticised about is his height more than his ability on the pitch. Crouch has scored one goal in every other game for England and his goalscoring record for starting matches is impressive for both Southampton and his former team Liverpool. It remains to be seen if the England striker can net 20 plus goals. The fact Benjani Mwaruwari still ended the season as top scorer despite moveing to Manchester City in January tells another story.

Crouch should link up with Defoe in Pompey's attack and both players could motivate each other. Some have suggested that Defoe could be the side's regular goal scorer, though he has scored in patches, and his best return to the Premier League is 18 goals in 49 appearances for Spurs in the 2006/2207 season. It will be the perfrect example of a little and large partnership, nonetheless, fans would expect them to bag around 15 goals each, complimented by the goals of Niko Kranjcar and John Utaka et al.

Redknapp also made the return to Stamford Bridge to secure the signing of Ben Sahar on loan, as the youngster was hoping to impress new Chelsea gaffer Luiz Felipe Scolari enough to earn a regular spot in the Blues squad. The 19-year old looked impressive in the team's pre-season scoring 3 goals in 7 appearances, and the fans should be pleased with their attack after watching the squandering Milan Baros in the closing stages of the season.

Glen Johnson's loan deal was made permanent after the former Chelsea right-back eradicated the indiscipline that sort of halted a promising career with immoralities such as wall punching - succeeded by a consistency not seen since his time at West Ham United.

Pompey's already strong back four was strengthened with the capture of Younes Kaboul from Tottenham Hotspur, and Redknapp managed to beat Sunderland and Aston Villa for the signature of the impressive France U21 captain. The former Auxerre youth made some blunders last season but the more confident players in the team should aid him. He will have the experience and appropriateness of Harry Redknapp and team-mate Sol Campbell to guide, protect him and nurture his talents when necessary, it looks like he will do well at Portsmouth. Another signing to maintain cover in the back four was that of Nadir Belhadj from RC Lens on a year loan. Two more signings were Glen Little on a free transfer from Reading and Omar Alieu Koroma. N****wo Kanu decided to extend his tiem at the South Coast side. These are all teh the transfer thus far.

Analysis

The manager's biggest task will be to balance their UEFA Cup campaign with their growing aspirations in the league. If Pompey progress in the competition , the 61-year old may consider sacrificing his FA Cup and Carling Cup pursuit and take elimination for the convenience of rest for the players. Domestic cup success can be a boost of energy for a club, and end a long wait for such silverware but in the bigger scheme of things it is a good position in the league and European success that can fuel a club's ambitions.

The partnership of Campbell and 2007/2008 Players' player of the year Sylvain Distin should once again fabricate the back bone of the team's season. The duo is over 30 but Redknapp is hoping that they can pass on their knowledge to Kaboul, who the manager also knows can play out of position before beating some members fro a starting role as the season goes on.

One cannot leave out the ever enigmatic and equivocal keeper David James as the veteran had arguably his best ever season in 2007/2008 season. James plays much of a role off-field in building a close bond within the squad as he does on it when he is diving to deny a goal from an opponent. The experience professionals such as James, Distin and Campbell will be used to breed young defenders and it will be strength or depth that makes or brakes the club's season.

The point made above is the more crucial when compared with the clubs that will also be aiming for a top-six finish. Spurs and Juande Ramos have brought in some quality signings such as David Bentley, Luka Modric and Giovanni Dos Santos which adds even more class to the already remarkable squad but Pompey fans should not be jealous. Manchester City who has continued their spending spree from last summer has brought in a new manager in Mark Hughes, Brazilian forwards Jo and Robinho and Tal Ben-Haim. Their transfer ventures does not look finished as yet. Another team is Everton has had a rough time in the transfer window have seen a notable prospect leave in Andy Johnson joining Fulham for £10.5m. Aston Villa has made some key signings to keep the team en route to achieving their expectations. There is not much to suggest that Portsmouth can make a similar or even better move up the league as they did last term.

The manager has a decision to make to which may influence the team's success in the top flight. The easier option would be to rest on the success of last season and work on repeating their top-ten finish. Or he could go for the chance if European success and use it to attract more quality players and make a move upward in the league and qualify for again. The UEFA Cup will certainly test his abundant belief in his own abilities. He may even put put a reserve team so don't be surprised and a sort of quiet summer proposes that he believes he has almost the right squad to help the team to a dream finish in the league.

The Englishman is most definitely frustrated at spending so much time on the bench at Anfield last season, but he scored when goals were needed. He did not want to leave Anfield but he figured that he was no longer needed by Benitez and he felt he should go to a team that will get him more time on the pitch and take pleasure in a team that will be built around him and his striker partner Defoe.

Stoke City

-Doing What Needs To Be Done-

2007/2008: Coming to the End

Stoke City has finally come back into the top flight after being absent for 23 years. They advanced to the Premier League after finishing second in the Championship in May and they hope now they can make their first appearance in the English Premier League to remember as they look to stay up.

The Potters got promotion on the final day of the season as they drew 0-0 with Leicester City. It was just enough to keep them in second place on 70 points, 2 points behind Champions West brom and four ahead of 3rd place Hull City. This allowed the, to get automatic promotion while also while alos causing Leicester to be relegated to League one for the first time in their football history.

It is estimated that promotion will earn Stoke City £35m for the new season. If they retain their place in the Premier League they could get a minimum of £60m over the next 3 seasons. The only thing the squad and Pulis is worried about is remaining in the top flight as this is their biggest challenge.

The Potter's style of play and physicality somewhat too small in proportion and it may turn out too ineffectual at this higher level, where the higher rated teams will stretch them and show the newcomer's weakness. Set Pieces were very effective in their run for promotion. A raft of six foot players which offered strong physical presence (Cresswell, Fuller, Sidibe, Cort). However, dependence on set pieces to get them onto the scoresheet may not be enough.

Stoke got off quite slow last season in their time in the Championship, as they only won 3 of their first 9 matches (losing only one), and now they are in the top tier victories will be more difficult to get if they don't gather some early momentum to give them a good run in the Barclays Premier League. They finished strong coming to the end of last season losing only one in their final ten games.

Summer Activity

As a newly promoted club, one of their main priorities this summer is to add strength and depth in areas where weaknesses may be revealed against sides in the first tier. Pulis will be aiming to do this to stay in the Premier League.

Pulid has sort of endured a difficult summer in the transfer market. For Stoek only Dave Kitson, Seyi Olofinjana, Amdy Faye, Andrew Davies, Abdoulaye Faye and Thomas Sorensen have turned up at the Britannia Stadium, while Marlon Bromes has departed. The manager us also hypothetical about players rejecting offers to join the club.

So unless the Stoke manager convinces some quality players to sign for them as they go into the new season which starts at home to Arsenal, very good test for them as they make an appearance after a 23 year absence from the top flight. The Premier League will only prove tough for Pulis' side if they do not prepare well for this exciting new challenge.

Many expect Stoke to make a quick return to the Championship but Pulis has reiterated that he is focused on keeping Stoke in the Premier League and is brushing aside sceptics. He also said if they sign players who are ideal for our entrance into the Premier League then we can move up a level. However, we need to sign these players. Pulis claims that Stoke was very close to capturing Scottish Player of the Year Carlos Cuellar from Rangers before he made the decision to join Aston Villa. A signing like that would've been a major buy coming close is the same as coming nowhere in terms of transfers.

The Potters angled their attention to Valencia's Serbia striker Nikola Zigic and they are hoping to him on a season long loan. Another Stoke target, is striker Jon Walters who plays for Ipswich Town and the Suffolk club has asked the Premier League side to increase their bid for the player or forget about the player as a possible buy.

More frustration for Pulis came about just a week before the league started when Jamaican Rudolph Austin was denied a work permit on appeal. The 22-year old was set to join international team mate Ricardo Fuller at Stoke fro a fee of around £1m, which was agreed with Portmore United in Jamaica. Austin was supposed to be a Stoke City player since 2007 but was refused a work permit because he had not played in 75% of Jamaica's international matches for the previous 2 years. Austin had played the required the number of required matches for his country, but the problem that had arised was that the Reggae Boyz have dropped below 75th in FIFA's top-ranked nations which is another requirement in getting a work permit.

Some positives from the summer is that new signing Dave Kitson has scored his first goal fro the Potters just two minutes into their 3-2 victory away at Southampton. Kitson, 28, became the club's record signing at £5.5m and he will expected to bring in goals as many have discovered in earlier seasons that the inability to score sufficient goals in the Premier League is one of the main reasons why teams are relegated.

At the end of their pre-season campaign Stoke managed 2-2 home draw to help give them a boost going into the 2008/2009 season.

Analysis

Transfer activity at the Britannia Stadium way not be over yet but currently Stoke hope they can rely on their players who helped the club with promotion to make their stay in the Premier League longer than one season.

Pulis made sure the team is going to do well this season as he said to media that they won't do a Derby. They should do better than the Rams as they would have to be hopeless and downtrodden to perform the way Derby did .

Many people think that the way Stoke play would be easily picked up and countered by teams and their managers. The manager has said if the current style does not work in the English Premiership that is bring in rewards such as goals and clean-sheets then fans will probably begin asking for another strategy for winning. Tony Pulis deserves much credit in gettign Stoke back into the top tier of English football but he is in a tight spot in getting the necessary resources to help the team avoid relegation. Many would expect them to struggle this season as they aim for survival. However, they may not fulfil and that objective looks a bit far-fetched. They may just fall short.

Manager

This stubborn old pro has had a bitter career as a manager so far which included sackings for offensive misconduct and failing to get the best out of the transfer market. He could be at his peak in helping Stoke to get Premier League football but survival in the league would be much greater than this.

Chop rating: 2/5

He is a fan favourite and is the basis for the teams' creativity. This Manchester United supporter impressively scored 14 goals from the wing last season and his pin point crosses and cool dribbling skills might just give the Premier League supporters something special to watch from the newcomers.

-Keeping It Simple-

2007/2008: Coming to the End

There have certainly been coaches who have taken to the demands of the Premier League with more self-confidence than Roy Keane. Many of the Black Cats faithful will be relieved that they are now a top flight club, who before
Derby County's woeful display last season, had endured the most shameful exits in the history of their competition in their last two visits and they did not even register 40 points in total. Difficulties were facing Roy Keane when he decided to become the club's gaffer as it was further highlighted by the team's position at the bottom of the Championship as he took his place in the Sunderland dugout.

The Manchester United legend did a fantastic job in his first season as he got the club promoted from such position. Even more satisfying for the club was the accomplishment of successfully remaining in the Premier League.

Their return to the Premier League saw them spend a total of £40m in their pre-season. They signed players such as Kenwyne Jones, Kieran Richardson, lalalalalaon Etuhu, Craig Gordon, Danny Higginbotham and Michael Chopra who was the hero on opening day as as his last minute strike went past Tottenham 'keeper Paul Robinson and gave the Mackems a great start to their league campaign.

Such sweet victories did not prove as much as they were just immature. The North East side struggled to stay on their feet in the top flight with the more challenging and unpredictable teams they faced weekly.

The difficulty and magnitude of Keane's task was shown through defeats such as a 3-0 demolition by Wigan and a weak 3-1 loss away to the Hammers before the low point of their season was in November, when they were given a 7-1 thrashing at the hands of Everton. Score-lines such as the aforementioned could have sent most teams into a fatal slump in form but the admirable will to win and the pride that distinguished Keane to carry the Black Cats through the season and achieve survival. Significant triumps over relegation rivals such as Bolton, Derby County and Birmingham City helped to accomplish their aim of ensuring Premier League football will be played at the Stadium of Light in the following season.

Summer Activity

Keane is appreciable honest abler out his faults as anybody else in the football community today, and and could expect Keane to keep his team working hard when the 2007/2008 season was finished. The Black Cats only managed 39 points a total that would normally see them relegated. However, Roy Keane has asked for additional funds from the aspiring chairman Naill Quinn to make sure the team push upward in the table for the new season.

The main supplier for this summer's transfer window has been Tottenham Hotspur as right-back Pascal Chimbonda, left-winger Steed Malbranque and central midfielder Teem Tainio have all joined the North-East outfit.

Temperamental winger El-Hadji Diouf, goalkeeper Nigel Colgan from republic of Ireland, West Ham United's Anton Ferdinand and Celtic's David Meyler have all been added to increase the depth of the squad and help to be strong competitors in the Premier League. These players are of good quality and there should be much improvement in certain areas in the squad once the players are out in the right places by the manager. Chimbonda and Ferdinand will improve the backline that was rather porous throughout the previous campaign, whilst Malbranque and Diouf who have been two of the league's best attacking midfielders should also be vital in the team's strife for success on the top tier.

The club has surprisingly obtained a loan deal for former Liverpool forward Djibril Cisse who can surely be a great finisher for the club and increase the number of wins for them this year. The striker did not have a successful spell in the Barclays Premiership with the Reds and will be hoping for the tides to turn in his favour this time. He hopes he will be capable of doing good things for Sunderland on the pitch.

This time around it is definitely important that teh summer's new signings be much more effective than those of last year, with £5.5m winger Kieran Richardson who spent most of the season the Sunderland treatment table than on the field, the £5m fee paid for Michael Chopra only rewarded the Mackems a measly 5 goals and £9m record signing Craig Gordon had a tough campaign which went up and down and the Scottish International was dropped for a short time after the team's humiliating defeat to Everton.

The failure to bring in top performances by those signed last summer means Keane will have to invest carefully in influential players to give Sunderland the boost they need in the English Premier League.

Analysis

Now Keane will be looking to strengthen his squad even more after they were flirting with relegation last season, he hopes this season they will enjoy a more settled second Premier League campaign.

Republic of Ireland international Nigel Colgan's addition has added more experience to the goalkeeping department. He He brings more competition for a starting place and gives more cover and support to Craig Gordon who will be desperate to improve his form, and skills this term.

In the backline new signing Pascal Chimbonda will add the necessary qualities which saw them struggle last season with the competitiveness of the top flight. However, the return of Jonny Evans to Manchester United left a hole in the Sunderland squad but that was patched up by more investment in the transfer market with Anton Ferdinand added to improve the integrity of the backline, as Danny Higginbotham, Nyron Nosworthy and Paul McShane all failed to impress when on the pitch.

The acquisitions of Teemu Tainio, Steed Malbranque and El-Hadji Diouf have completely transformed the options available to Keane in midfield. Malbranque and Diouf in particular should add the kind of technical ability to the Black Cat's squad that is needed to break down the tight defenders of the Premier League. The club captain Dean Whithead has returned to his favourite role n the middle of the pack where he could team up with Tainio to make an effective pairing due to the signing of Chimbonda. Wingers Kieran Richardson and Carlos Edwards must work hard to keep their names off the club's injury list so that their dangerous pace can be fully used.

Keane hopes his loan signing Cisse will make the Black Cats more dangerous upfront and bring in more goals of-course. Cisse should form a solid partnership with Trinidad and Tobago international Kenwyne Jones. Though he was out for most of last season through injury the ex-Southampton man will also be working to remain fit this season and add more fire to Sunderland's attack. The manager can also is Diouf in a supporting role behind the strikers or even upfront as he will also add more in the team's attack. Michael Chopra has been in good form for some time and Keane cannot afford to rely on him with his extensive misfiring. Neither can he put too much responsibility on youngster Martyn Waghorn. Sunderland need to be more threatening infront of goal if they too want to move up the table.

Teams such as Middlesbrough, West Ham and Blackburn Rovers have all been struggling this summer to add more players to their squad. Keane will be lookign to take advantage of the experiences he gained in his first season as manager in the top flight. This should go alogn fine and one can predict an even brighter season this time for the loyal fans of Sunderland.

-The European Dream

2007/2008: Coming to the End

Spurs manager Juande Ramos must work towards getting in the type of performances and lifting the club to the heights they were tipped to reach last year. The former Sevilla manager began his reign at Tottenham at the close of October 2007, where he had to pick up the club from a disappointing league position from his predecessor Martin Jol which sort of put a dent in any dreams of the was hoping to achieve that season. Ramos helped the London club to move out of the drop zone to finish at the head of the bottom half of the table in 11th.

The Spaniard did well to add stability and discipline to a side that looked to have lost its way under Jol. After the Carling Cup final victory over Chelsea in March, Spurs' form faded for almost tow months. After winning their first piece of silverware in 9 years, surprisingly Spurs began to drop points as they appeared to be cruising. However, they secured a UEFA Cup place and the 40 points needed to ensure they will be in the Premier League for another season.

Ramos may have won over the fans but he will quickly be forgotten should the Lilywhites fail to go on to another chapter for the club and fix what was a generally bitter season. The Tottenham Hotspur board have also proven themselves to be tough in managers in the past, and Ramos should be aware of this.

Summer Activity

Juande Ramos wasted no time in rebuilding the Spurs team, as he secured the services of Croatian midfielder Luka Modric, before the window even opened. He was not well known by fans in Britain despite him helpign his country to knock England out of the Euro 2008 qualifiers. Modric had a sort of power of control in the midfield of the Croatian team in the tournament and Spurs' fans were very much delighted with performances of their new signing. He showed in their pre-season that he is strong on the ball and it is quite difficult to take the ball from him. He looks more than capable of doing well in the Spurs midfield and his creativity and passing may outshine team-mate Jermaine Jenas.

Maybe one of the most surprising signings was that of young Barcelona sensation Giovani dos Santos. The impressive Mexican international who is just 19 years was made available by the Catalan Giants and some of the top European clubs tried to persuade this teenager to be apart of their club, before reaching an agreement with Spurs. Giovani is without a doubt a natural and talented who many of the club's supporters would consider to be a common Tottenham player; full of skill and flair he is capable of changing a game in only seconds. There have been questions over his attitude in the past but it will be interesting to see if he can cope with losing his spot to a change in formation having come here for first team football. Another promising acquisition is David Bentley who was quoted saying he was "Sticking it" to former club Arsenal by several papers, so he could make his fidelity known. His début performance and goal versus Celtic showed how eager is to impress the manager and the Tottenham fans. Everyone will be hoping he can reproduce last season's form for Rovers which forced Spurs to shell out a hefty price for the winger. The Lilywhites now have a right-sided midfielder who can send in quality crosses, which is not a strong atttribute that Aaron Lennon has.

The most unexpected transfer activity that involved Spurs was not a player coming but one leaving. Captain Robbie Keane left Spurs to join the club he supported as a boy. Chairman Daniel Levy slammed Benitez's transfer strategy in luring the Irishman to Liverpool. Nonetheless, the £20m sum for Robbie Keane may have ended some of the tension. Benitez was not the only criticized for the way he obtained his player as Sir Alex Ferguson strategy to attract Dimitar Berbatov to Manchester United was also under scrutiny. The Bulgarian barely featured in pre-season matches and he expressed his want for trophies as he was getting on in age. Sir Alex captured the classy striker for a fee of £30m and a loan deal which saw young Frazier Campbell going to White Hart Lane for a year. Spurs had lined up several replacements and they may have gotten someone to really fit the void left by Berbatov. Spurs bough Russian striker Roman Pavlyuchenko who was in top form for his country in the Euro 2008 campaign. Pavlyuchenko formerly of Spartak Moscow was a clinical striker in-front of goal for the Russian side. He is a good finisher and may help fans to forget about Berbatov. Spurs seem still to be eyeing other players though they have another striker in Darren Bent, but adding the likes of David Villa and Andrei Arshavin definitely would not hurt the club.

Analysis

The Tottenham Hotspur squad has been reconstructed this summer. Not have players been brought in but a handful has left including 'keeper Paul Robinson, who went the opposite way to Bentley and joined Blackburn Rovers and Pascal Chimbonda, Teemu Tainio and Steed Malbranque all left for Roy Keane's Sunderland.

Ramos has strengthened his midfield in the attacking sense but it kind of alarming that he has not brought in enough defensive players to prevent them from allowing the high number of goals like they conceded last season. Nevertheless, the return of Ledley King and Gareth Bale from injury has given the back four a relatively new look, and Ramos will be hoping the experience of King may be crucial for the side if he lasts for the entire season.

Ramos' addition of Huerelho Gomes will instil a new sense of confidence in the team's defence. Unlike Robinson the former PSV 'keeper is fearless in goal and his presence is imposing. Didier Zokora, Tom Huddlestone and Jamie O'Hara look to battle it out role of defensive midfielder in a formation of either 4-5-1 or 4-3-3.

One must not forget forward Darren Bent who can be considered as the forgotten striker and last season's Premier League flop. However, he has scored ten goals in pre-season and appears to be in top form. Pavlyuchenko and Bent should form a solid partnership if they play as a pair upfront. Both strikers are quite unpredictable and could help bag even more goals for the club this season.

For the past years, Tottenham have always been considered as the club to most likely break into the Premier League's 'Big Four' and every season they have failed to so so and to even put up a good fight for a top four spot. This year they have really stepped up the quality that may have been lacking and perhaps they can make into the top six again. If Spurs are to get to this position in the table then the new players will have to gel quickly with the old, whilst they some to terms with a new management system. If they can leave last season behind them, then they might be able to reach their goal of playing Champions League football.

Manager

http://i288.photobucket.com/albums/ll198/d1j/jRamos.jpg

Ramos did not arrive in good fashion but his hard work and dedication to the club helped them to finish a good position in the league after horrible start and to be winners of the Carling Cup. He has been working hard to keep his team fit and if he can help the new players to settle in quickly then they may be untouchable in the league.

Tottenham's middle man could have a very good season if he remains calm and plays the right passes. Jenas could lead the team to a successful league run if he aims to be the dictator in the Spurs midfield. Though he has some new players around Jenas will hope they can quickly adapt to the Premier League and play good football for them to reach closer to the top.

Default Season Preview Part NINE - West Bromich Albion and West Ham United

Season Preview Part NINE

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

West Bromich Albion

-Staying Where We Belong-

2007/2008: Coming to the End

West Brom are back where they belong according to the homepage of the club's website, after returning to the to flight thanks to winning the Coca-Cola Championship last season. Before the 2007/2008 season many felt Albion would move away from other league contenders but it was not so.

Through the season it always seemed as though the Baggies' rich style of play would would see them through to the next level and leave the others behind, but whenever there was a good result a bad one often followed. They could not be consistent with any good results and thankfully nor could the rest of the Championship teams. Stoke City and Bristol city were the main culprits; They reached the crowning point of the division and then were sort of knocked off of their feet.

Despite their lack of consistency they all but sealed promotion with one game to go when they drew 1-1 with Southampton, giving them a 3 point lead over their title rivals and a notably superior goal difference. West Brom then booked their place in the Barclays Premiership by defeating Queens Park Rangers on the final day of the season, giving the London side a 2-0 thus claiming a Premier League spot and finishing as Champions, raising their first piece of silverware in 40 years.

Moreover they had quite an impressive run in the FA Cup, which surely exceeded the fans and the club's expectations. Joylessly they were beaten by Portsmouth in the semi-finals of the FA Cup even though they played better football and was the better side. Their repeated curse for all their downfalls was not being able score goals when given the opportunity.

Summer Activity

For past seasons the Baggies club could be blamed for not giving their all in the off-season towards helping stay in the Premier League. However, this tiem they are certainly looking towards making the Premier League their home as they spent around £13.5m on new signings. Well none of this would matter if these sort of expensive signings are not of good quality but so far manager Tony Mowbray appears to have been very clever in the transfer market.

Albion was wounded by some serious defensive weaknesses last season and manager was quickly tried to improve the quality of the back four. A replacement was most certainly needed as start centre-back Curtis Davies completed his move to Aston Villa after spending the season on-loan at Birmingham.

Mowbray began working to improve his squad and he did so with the impressive signing of Gianni Zuiverloon, the Dutch U21 international who ws named in the 2007 UEFA European U21 Football Championship "Team of the Tournament. Zuiverloon is a proficient right-back who is not affraid of pushing forward to aid the team's attack he had much attention from clubs around Europe after his performance in said tournament but he chose Albion because of their style of football.

On the left side of the back four Albion's manager has signed Slovakian international Marek Cech from FC Porto who should bring his invaluable Champions League experience to the Hawthorns. Primarily, he plays an attcking left-wing-back so he, like Zuiverloon, will push forward every chance they get when his team attacks.

Their third signing who was probably their main transfer target for most of the summer was Abdoulaye Meite. One good thing about this player is that he has played in the Premiership for the last two seasons and he was involved in Bolton's relegation battle last term so he has the experience and awareness of what it takes to fight and remain in the top flight.

Behind the new defence will be new goalkeeper Scott Carson brought from Liverpool on a four-year deal. The front has also been boosted by the signing of striker Luke Moore from Aston Villa who moved due to much limited playing time.

There was also some key losses along with the new arrivals. Kevin Phillips who scored 22 league goals last season on the road to promotion, still there were numerous questions of whether he could bring that sort of form to the Premier League. Phillips has rejected a new contract with the club and has signed for Birmingham City. Another departure that may definitely hurt the Baggies is that of midfielder Zolton Gera who was probably one of the best and most effective players at West Brom for the last few years. Gera has made a move to Premier League side Fulham as he hopes to be an even better prospect for the Cottagers.

Analysis

Albion have tried to rebuild their squad and fix some of their problems but regardless of the collection of the defensive signings the still look a bit susceptible in the back-line. With the new right-back and left-back Zuiverloon and Cech goign on the attack when they have the chance and even times when they don't then their defence will be stretched.

New signing Meite is often liable to some stupid mistakes and at this level these mistakes will be punished on a regular basis. Overshadowing the back-line will be 'keeper Scott Carson, who will of-course has his work cut out for him as he will have plenty shots to stop this coming season but it could be said that he is one of the best goalkeepers in the league. West Brom will be depending a whole lot on him to keep them in games and they expect Carson's shot stopping capabilities to do that.

One serious problem for Mowbray's side is that they have not yet found a replacement for Zolton Gera who always gave 100% on the pitch and finding a player of that nature is not easy. Even worse, Gera has left for fellow relegation stragglers Fulham and will give the West London club an edge over them. Now Gera has left much responsibility has been placed on the shoulders of Captain Jonathan Greening who is capable of making a pass of high accuracy.

In their attack Bednar and Moore should cause problems for defences. Moore's outstanding pace will leave some defenders easting his dust and he may even give those flat-footed defenders more problems. The manager believes his true potential will show this season as he hopes Moore will score much more often than he usually does, however he has not been able to live up to his youth days at Aston Villa.

Once again expect the Baggies to be fighting for survival at the foot of the table as there are still some areas in their squad that are very weak despite them digging for players in the transfer market. Such weakness may have a major impact on their season and could cause them to be relegated again, still Albion will no doubt stay close to their opponents as they intend to work hard to stay out of the bottom three until the final game of the season. If Mowbray opts for a 4-5-1 formation then there may be little hope but in their last pre-season friendly against Mallorca he changed to 4-4-2 at the half which helped them to play better football and get the equalizing goal. The 4-5-1 formation has been the cause for the club's decline in form for the past seasons and he should learn from the past manager's mistakes.

Manager

A nonsense player in his days and he has been able to teach the players at West Brom to play good football and how to appreciate the game. If he can fill the areas in the team that need strengthening then the Baggies can be sure to cause some upsets and stay in the league.

Chop rating: 2/5

Key Player

An old-school winger who would try to replace the departed Gera and bring similar or even better quality crosses and passes to the forwards to help get a good result. For sure he will try to tease. torment and tickle every defender he faces in the top flight.

West Ham United

-Working Our Way Up-

2007/2008: Coming to the End

West Ham United got off to a fine start in the 2007/2008 season and it was filled with much pressure but as the season took its course the treatment room became really overcrowded and the club became stuck at the middle of the table far too early in the season.

Relegation never really was a threat and they never did stand a chance of obtaining any silverware. Their cup runs did not bring any inspiration and joy to the players as they were losers to Everton in the quarter-final of the Carling Cup before being knocked out of the FA Cup by Manchester City.

Curbishley and his squad deserve credit for finishing a firm tenth place despite the majority of the squad being injured but they ere literally stuck there and it must've felt like almost an eternity to the fans. For most of the season they had nothing to play for and it showed as the season came to a close.

Nevertheless, their 2007/2008 league campaign had some positives as they continued their winning streak over Manchester United as they beat them 2-1 at home and they also beat Liverpool at the Boleyn Ground. Derby County and Reading were both given a thrashing and the emergence of Freddie Sears gave hope to those at the club. The end of the season came and they only one two of their last ten games as their league campaign died out without even a cry.

Their season was unimpressive on the pitch but it was bitter off it as the medical staff worked overtime at Upton Park. Manager Curbishley was not able to field his strongest eleven all season as Kieran Dyer, Dean Ashton, Craig Bellamy, Julian Faubert and Scott Parker amongst others all had long spells on the sidelines.

For sure it was a frustrating season for everyone at Upton Park as the injuries sustained off the pitch, really defined their season.

Summer Activity

Sort of a bitter summer at Upton Park as Curbishley said there would be no big name players brought in. Rumours are spreading around aying the club is having a difficult time financially and that they are willing to release several players to improve on their current state. Some players have already left the club: Bobby Zamora and John Pantsil both departed to Fulham and Freddie Ljunberg has reportedly enjoyed a £6m pay-off regardless of him still having three years left on his contract. Aonton Ferdinand also left the club to join Sunderland after the West Ham board allowed Roy Keane to speak with him. Goalkeeper Robert Green has aired his discontentment with his current contract and some big earners in the squad have been linked moves away from the club.

One concern for the London club is the future of striker Dean Ashton as it is believed that clubs such as Tottenham, Fulham and Wigan are keen on offering bids for the player.

For the new signings their main focus seemd to be on Lazio midfileder Valon Behrami. They got their man for a fee £5m and he should be a good addition to their midfield. The manager has also brought in a veteran goalkeeper in Jan Lastvuka as a cover for Green. He also signed Balint Bajner from Liberty Salonta in Romania. Curbishley managed to get a loan deal for David Di Michele from Torino to add more cover in their attack.

However, Curbishley has spent most of the summer working with his medical staff to get and keep players fit for the new season. Bellamy has returned from injury for the new term and the manager hails the Welsh international for his hard work. Anothe boost is for the club also Kieran Dyer is back after breaking his leg over a year ago.

Analysis

The Hammers have an exceptionally good, if fragile squad and a strong start may see them have a much better season. Players such as Ashton, Bellamy, Dyer Faubert, Parker, Green and Upson have all shown their quality, however when it comes to staying fit, none of them have a good record and this seems to something that the manager forgets when his side can't get any good results.

The manager hope to get a good start as their first game is a derby match for Tottenham. Then their opponents for the next four games are Portsmouth, West Brom, Wigan and then Liverpool.

Ashton and Bellamy should surely bring in the goals and they have looked in good form during their pre-season preparation. Loan signing Di Michele should definitely add more cover in upfront with the inconsistent Carlton Cole and shining prospect Freddie Sears ready to play as he is just 18 years of age.

The midfield is loaded with Parker and Noble who are solid and Faubert, Dyer, Etherington, Mullins and Boa Morte offer much to make the West Ham midfield a dynamic force. New signing Behrami can play wide or as a full back and the London side's defence don't have much problems either.

Green is a clever Premier League 'keeper and there is sufficient quality in the back four as there is Upson, Neill Gabbidon and McCartney to keep the defence strong matches. However, Anton Ferdinand will be missed as his experience and composure really did help the club last season. His transfer to Sunderland seemed to have upset the manager as the board allowed the player to leave.

The key to success at Upton Park is to keep the injury lost as short as possible because if this does continue from last term then they will definitely struggle. Curbishley prays he has a lot more luck this season. So if the club manages to keep key players fit then they could in for a top ten finish and they challenging for a UEFA Cup spot.

There seems to be much trouble at the Hammers as rumours of financial problems will not end and Bobby Zamora and Gren has already belittled the club. Moreover, Alan Curbishley is the bookies favourite to be the first manager to be sacked. A bad start may leave him uneasy.

West Ham are facing more problems as their Premier League opponents have strengthened their squads considerably. Clubs such as Tottenham, Portsmouth and Manchester City are looking to go all out this season. However, the return of many players who hardly played last season is a lift and they add more depth this year.

So should Ashton and Curbishley leave the club then they may be in all sorts of problems. Still, the squad is not too good to go down. They may finish mid-table again. The squad does not appear to have the quality to match the likes of Everton, Aston Villa, Spurs, Portsmouth and Manchester City but may be suited to struggling with the likes of Newcastle, Blackburn and Middlesbrough. Fans hope for a better season and one very few injuries. Hope is all they have that Ashton stays and Curbishley is not sacked early into the season.

Manager

He spent most last season moaning about his long injury list. If there is another huge list of players injured then he cannot go on moaning anymore and he will have to hope his squad brings in some good results. He is the bookies favourite to get sacked and whether he can get the club up the table remains to be seen.

Chop rating: 4/5

Key Player

The alert and energetic French winger had tough season last term as he spent most of his time on the sidelines getting treatment. However, he is now back to full fitness and an inspiring pre-season suggests he may show the fans his worth in the new season.

Default Season Preview Part TEN - Wigan Athletic

Season Preview Part TEN

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wigan Athletic

-Forward On-

2007/2008: Coming to the End

Wigan's season turned along with Chelsea's on 14th April this year, when Emile Heskey managed got a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge which made the host lose out on a Premier title by placing second. He also helped to make sure that there will be Premier League football at the JJB stadium next season.

Steve Bruce took charge of Wigan in November 2007 and he has proven himself to be worth the £3m that Dave Whelan paid to Birmingham City for compensation. Bruce wanted to leave the club to take the managerial role at the JJB, which was questioned at that time. The Latics were in dire straits and on a seven-match losing streak and were falling down the league.

The previous campaign began with former manager Chris Hutchings as Wigan topped the table in the early stages of the 2007/2008 season. Antoine Sibierski was on the score-sheet for the first 3 league games. However, their attack turned sour with the injury of their predominant striker Emile Heskey in October. Heskey's good form in the early parts of the season saw him earn a recall to Steve McClaren's England squad, where he partnered former Liverpool team-mate Michael Owen, and he complimented the striker. So there was no Heskey and no goals were coming so they could not win or draw and Hutchings left his post.

Steadily, the former Manchester United defender Bruce instill his ideas on the team, only after suffering a humiliating 4-1 reverse against Bolton by bringing Wilson Palacios and Erik Edman among others during the January window. The side eventually got some decent results, managing a 1-1 draw at Anfield and a doing exceptionally well in a 5-3 win over Blackburn.

There were often alot of complaints about the state of the pitch during last year which Bruce described as a cabbage patch after Chelsea knocked the, out of the FA Cup. The dull atmosphere of the fans at the JJB was also criticised but after chairman Dave Whelan's huge price drop, Wigan are sure to have very good attendances as season tickets were being offered for as low as £13.

So overall the Lancashire club had a successful season. A 14th place finish was surely a an improvement on the 16th of the season before. After the end of the season Bruce stated that Wigan would have a fourth successive Premier League campaign.

Summer Activity

The Wigan manager has done well to keep the team's main attractions and rumours of forthcoming offers for players this summer. Luis Antonio Valencia and Wilson Palacios were rumoured to have caught the attention of Manchester United, no less but they are still at the JJB. Both Palacios and Scharner have signed a contract extension at the club. The only departures from the club are the relative benhcwarmer striker David Cotterill, who returns to Championship side Sheffield United and Andreas Granqvist who left for FC Groningen.

It could be said that Bruce was one of the cleverest operators in this sumer's window. The budget at the JJB is very tight and some important and impressive acquisitions have been added for relatively miniscule prices.

First and foremost, the Latics have captured the world's best striker. Amr Zaki, poised away from his home of Egypt and former club Zamalek, is head of the FIFA list for the most-inform strikers in the world. He joined on a one year loan deal, with the option of making his move permanent for the next season. For the services of the two-time African Cup of Nations champion, Bruce has paid an initial £1.8m - small money in a world where Marlon King cost £4m.

Bruce brought some players from his former club Birmingham City. He signed Daniel De Ridder and Oliver Kapo. The Dutchman has yet to emulate anything close to the dazzling form that catapulted him into international notability during the 2006 Under-21 European Championship for the Netherlands. Nevertheless, after taking the player form Ajax (via loan-club Celta Vigo) to Birmingham, Bruce will work to get the best out of the winger for a second time around. De Ridder will aim to stay off the club's injury list this season. Kapo could be a gem in the Wigan crown just like Cristophe Dugarry proved to be at St. Andrews fours season ago. The long-leg Frenchman has blistering pace and is a composed finisher who does take his chances.

To the JJb also comes highly-rated midfielder Lee Cattermole from Middlesbrough. While at his home town club, Cattermole found it very hard ot break into the first team as he was blocked by the likes of Doriva, George Boateng and Fabio Rochemback. Now the 20-year old has the chance to be a dominant force for Wigan and is aggressive nature and efficient usage should provide Bruce with a holding midfielder which he has been anxious for.

Maynor Figueroa has signed on for another season long loan from Deportivo Olimpia in Honduras and wil provide conversation for Wilson Palacios. Figueroa impressed on his only Wigan start last season when marked Cristiano Ronaldo quite admirably on the last day of the season.

Analysis

If Bruce's new signings work well together, and Titus Bramble maintains his concentration for 90 minutes at a time, then the Latics could be capable of pushing themselves further away from the relegation zone.

Valencia and Palcios are still on board and the exciting signing of Zaki, Wigan should be much stronger opponents than teams such as Hull City, Bolton and Stoke City.

Though they finished 14th place last season, we could expect them to be in the lower mid-table position this season. It appears Wigan are strengthening the team gradually, as there was no hurry to do business in the transfer market. Veterans such as Kevin Kilbane and club captain Mario Melchiot should aid Bruce with helping the new players to settle at the club and adapting to the Premier League. They has made very good progress as they now have 13 full international players.

Manager

He cost the club £3m in compensation to Brimingham City and he got some of the underachievers from Birmingham he more than repaid them by keeping the club in the Premier League. Again he will work to keep them up and to try to push for a top ten finish.

Key Player

Valencia was great form last term for Wigan and he did his part to help them stay up. His performances caught the eyes of clubs such as Manchester United. Now he is staying he will look to have an even better season and help the club to achieve their ambitions for this new season.
