MATCH PREVIEW
TROPHEE DES CHAMPIONS

Lineups:

Lyon

Bench:
Vercoutre
Boumsong
Bodmer
Makoun
Ederson
Keita
Delgado

Marseille

Bench:
Riou
Erbate
M'Bami
Valbuena
Zenden
Grandin
Samassa

Players To Watch:

SIDNEY GOVOU
The Lyon winger has been impressive thus far in the pre-season, combining well with the central midfielders and carving out plenty of scoring opportunities for both himself and the front men. No doubt he will again play an important role in the Ligue 1 champion's attack today.

MAMADOU NIANG
The 29 year old Senegal international has done well at Marseille since arriving from RC Strasbourg in 2005, scoring over 40 goals in all competitions. He will be looking to get on the scoresheet again today, but this time against rival title contenders, Lyon.

ZAPATA SET FOR LYON MOVE?

Speculation is mounting that 22 year old Udinese centre back, Cristian Zapata, is set for a switch to Olympique Lyonnais, after he was spotted in the director's box at the Stade de Gerland ahead of the Trophee Des Champions fixture today. Claude Puel was quoted earlier this week as saying that he was interested in signing a new CB.

LYON VICTORIOUS IN
CLASH OF THE TITANS

http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x161/ferretking9/lyon/593343286zubar.jpg

Ronald Zubar shows his frustration...

Olympique Lyonnais ran out 1-0 winners over bitter rivals Marseille in a thrilling Trophee Des Champions encounter today.

The match had been billed as a tight affair, with both teams creating good attacking opportunities, and both goalkeepers rising up to the challenge.

The game started at a frantic pace, with Lyon being awarded a free kick in a promising position just 10 minutes after the start. Juninho stepped up to take the set piece, but his curling effort left a lot to be desired as the ball went soaring over the bar.

Marseille seemed to have the better of Lyon from then on in, with front man Mamadou Niang fluffing the best chance on 39 minutes after a clean break through on goal, much to the distress of his manager Eric Gerets.

The sides went in at half time with the scoreline remaining goalless, despite both teams playing exciting attacking football.

15 minutes later, the two sides ran out again, looking focused and re-energised. Marseille almost went ahead straight from the restart, after Kone went on a flamboyant dribble, only to finish the move with a milalalala shot which spiralled well wide of the target.

Marseille boss, Gerets, looked to mix things up in the 58th minute when he brought on M'Bami and Valbuena to replace the midfield pairing of Ziani and Cheyrou. This seemed likely to break the stalemate, as the substitutes dictated the play with their combination of passing and movement, until Marseille were rocked by a Lyon counterattack in the 62nd minute.

A good team move saw Sidney Govou sending Fred in on goal. Fred shaped up to blast the ball from just inside the area, but dummied, flicking the ball across to Karim Benzema who was gifted a simple tap in. Lyon now led the game by a goal to nil.

Lyon looked rejuvenated now, with Fred almost doubling their lead in soon after with a spectacular bicycle kick which left Mandanda rooted to the spot but went agonisingly wide of the target.

In the end, Lyon managed to hold on to their advantage to win their 8th Trophee Des Champions.

Yeah Benzema is the man of the moment, but that might change if things go my way in the transfer market...

3-0 I reckon. They don't seem strong enough to deal with Lyon.

SUPER SUB KEITA
SAVES THE DAY

Abdulkader Keita was awarded Man of the Match today, after coming off the bench to score the winning goal against FC Nantes in the 89th minute.

Lyon had gone a goal down initially, conceding to a Keseru strike in the 23rd minute, but the team continued to fight away, eventually equalising in the 62nd minute through Karim Benzema.

Things then went from bad to worse for FC Nantes, as central defender Pierre was sent off in the 65th minute, for a cynical foul on Kim Kallstrom who looked to be through on goal.

However, Juninho failed to convert from the free kick Lyon had been awarded and the draw seemed inevitable.

That is, until Puel made a tactical substitution, bringing on Keita for Govou in the 79th minute. At this point, Lyon were all over the Nantes back four, and the goal they deserved finally came in the dying moments of the game courtesy of 27 year old Keita.

Final Score: Nantes 1 - 2 Lyon

Claude Puel was rightfully delighted with his team's performance in a post match interview with Lyon.TV:

Claude, a close shave out there today against a team that many expected you to beat comfortably. Does that concern you?
Of course not! Expecting to walk over any team, regardless of their ability, is just plain suicidal. I think we were unlucky to concede early on, but the character of our team really showed today.

So you don't mind the poor defending from Cris and Mensah to concede the Nantes goal then?
Well we got the three points that we came here for so that is the main objective achieved. I realise that the defending from our back four to concede that goal was rather sloppy and that could have cost us the game, but it is still early in the season. We should not be so quick to fret, as the players we are talking about have already proved they are capable of winning silverware.

Abdulkader Keita scored another late winner for you today. Is there any chance that he could break into the starting eleven with this kind of performance?
Yes, I think he has been performing well above expectations so far and that it would only be fair to repay him with the chance he deserves.

Meanwhile, your new signing Cristian Zapata was present on the bench today. Will he be making his debut next week at Nancy?
Like I say, he may feature, he may not. Cris and Mensah weren't so good today, but we all know they are quality players on their day. I have spoken with Cristian and he accepts that he must be patient in order to break into the starting eleven.

Finally, Claude, any updates on potential transfers into the club?
I believe that the club will be holding a press conference to unveil a new signing shortly. However, this is not the end of our activity in the window, as I am still looking to sign one or two more players before it closes in three weeks time.

Claude, thank you for you time and congratulations on the winning start.
Thank you.

LYON REVEAL REYES
AS NEW MAN

Claude Puel today revealed Spaniard Jose Antonio Reyes as his latest signing at the Stade de Gerland. The 25 year old arrives from Atletico Madrid for a fee believed to be around the £5 million mark.

Reyes has previously played for Sevilla, Arsenal and Real Madrid, and was also being strongly linked with a move to Portugese outfit Benfica, but instead opted for a move to France.

Reyes, who arrived in France early this morning to complete a medical, has signed a four year deal with the club.

Lyon.TV was there at his unveiling earlier to ask the questions on everyone's lips...

So Claude, this is the new signing you mentioned in your interview after the Nantes game?
Correct.

Many of the fans seem suprised by such a high profile signing. Can you tell them how you pulled it off?
As you know, I have been looking for a left winger since the beginning of our pre-season tour in England. We had been keeping tabs on both Charles N'Zogbia and Adriano Correia Claro, but there were problems. We made a bid for Adriano but Sevilla would not sell. So when we heard that Reyes may be available, of course, we had to act quickly.

So where will Jose fit into your team? As a left winger?
First and foremost yes. However, he can also play in the centre or up front, so his presence within the team is invaluable to us. It is also good that our current left winger, Kim Kallstrom, now has some competition for a first team place. This kind of challenge will keep both players on their toes.

Jose, welcome to Lyon.
Thank you.

Can you explain to the fans why it is that you chose to come here?
I was unhappy at Atletico and asked for a move, but at first they would only allow me to go out on loan. I had several options, the best one was Benfica. Then I was told that Atletico had accepted a bid for me from Lyon and I told them that a permanent deal would be more suitable. I had seen their match against Manchester United and knew about their great success in France. I want to become a part of it and win some silverware here.

Do you believe that the team can win silverware this season?
Of course, that is why I chose to come here. Claude told me of his ambitions for the club and I was very impressed. I am looking forward to meeting my new team mates and hopefully playing some time soon.

Claude, how likely is Jose to feature in your upcoming match against Nancy?
I cannot really say right now. We will see how things go in training this week and I will leave it at that.

Claude, Jose, thankyou for your time.
