great win mate! glad to see your doing well

Benzema is an outstanding player, when i was doing MM08 for Real i signed him and made him the lineup striker and giving him the number 5 Jersey he reminded me of zidan in a way so thats why i gave it to him

Keep up the good work.

MATCH PREVIEW

Lineups:

Lyon

Bench:
Vercoutre
Boumsong
Bodmer
Makoun
Ederson
Keita
Delgado

Newcastle

Bench:
Harper
Cacapa
Enrique
Geremi
Barton
Xisco
Viduka

Players To Watch:

KALLSTROM

After an impressive performance as a substitute in the game against Portsmouth, Kallstrom will be starting in today's match out on the left hand side.

If he can use his attacking presence to cause problems for Newcastle RB, Habib Beye, then there is a chance he could cement his place in the Lyon starting eleven.

MARTINS

The former Internazionale striker is an unbelievable athlete, with great attacking pace and a huge jump. No doubt the Newcastle wingers will be looking to supply this man with the ball as often as possible in order to break down the Lyon defence.

Any Predictions?

Great start so far mate, Lyon are a good side, i started a MM with them in 08. Govou and Cris were outstanding for me. And Bodmer (i think it is) he was very verstile and came in handy. hope you smash the Geordies

LYON COME OUT ON
TOP IN CLOSE ENCOUNTER

A man of the match performance from Newcastle defender was not enough to save his side from defeat, as the Mags succumbed to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Olympique Lyonnais. The match was in fact a tight affair, which could have gone either way according to manager Claude Puel.

Match Report:

1: Obafemi Martins lays the ball off to Michael Owen to get the game underway
3: Duff zips past three Lyon players in succession, but his cross fails to meet Martins who is lurking on the edge of the six yard box.
8: Newcastle continue to attack as a Jonas Gutierrez cross is well headed away by centre half Cris.
16: Striker Fred manages to break the Newcastle offside trap, but fails to connect with his left foot shot to the relief of keeper Shay Given.
21: Gutierrez dribbles into the box and tries to cut the ball back to Owen. However, Lloris pounces on it to prevent the danger.
27: Toulalan gets down the left wing and crosses only for defender Steven Taylor to clear.
36: Kallstrom makes a good run down the left hand side but Fred's through ball is intercepted by right back Habib Beye.
38: Gutierrez works his way to the byline and sends the ball into the area. Duff meets the cross with his head, but the effort is poor, as the ball loops well over the bar.
45: Kallstrom crosses the ball into Benzema, but Coloccini rises well to head it away from danger.

HALF-TIME: Newcastle 0 - Lyon 0

46: Lyon kick off to restart the game.
52: N'Zogbia brings down Benzema to the left of the area and is booked for the tackle.
53: Govou's free kick is a good one but Coloccini remains dominant in the air and clears once again.
57: Nicky Butt does well to close down a spectacular 25 yard effort from Juninho.
65: GOAL! Fred controls a long ball from Lloris on his chest and flicks it onto Benzema in one swift movement. Coloccini is neck and neck with the Lyon front man as he surges towards goal, but the Frenchman proves to be too strong as he squeezes his shot past Given and into the bottom right hand corner of the goal. 1-0 Lyon
SUB: Keita and Ederson come on to replace Govou and Kallstrom, whilst Newcastle bring on Geremi and Barton for Taylor and Butt.
71: Clerc runs with the ball down the right and squares it to Benzema, but Given is well positioned and bravely collects the ball from under his feet.
72: Given's long kick finds Martins in acres of space, with Owen supporting him to the right. Martins sprints down the left and aims for Owen, only for Cris to get back just in time and clear the ball away. The geordies are clearly disgusted at the waste of such a good opportunity, with some fans choosing to leave the ground early.
76: Juninho plays the ball into Fred, who uses his first touch to get away from Geremi and unleashes a strong effort goalwards. With Given rooted to the spot, the ball just shaves the top of the bar.
SUB: Bodmer comes on for Juninho.
82: Newcastle push forward in an attempt to snatch a late equaliser, but the Lyon defence hold strong and manage to keep the mags at bay.
SUB: Former Lyon skipper Claudio Cacapa comes on for Coloccini.

FULL TIME: Newcastle 0 - Lyon 1

(Sorry for not including the player ratings, I'm in a bit of a rush and don't have time! )

Giggs
Tevez

Lyon

Boumsong
Bodmer

Players To Watch:

CRISTIANO RONALDO
This player needs no introduction. After a record breaking season of success last year, the Portugese phenomenon will be looking to extend his legacy as United kick off their 2008/09 season against Lyon tonight.

KARIM BENZEMA
With four goals from two games so far in the pre-season, Benzema will be looking to lead on the front lines once again for Lyon tonight, as they look to cause an upset with a win at Old Trafford. If Benzema is in form again tonight, then Lyon could achieve a hat trick of victories here in England, the ideal start to their campaign.

Top quality work mate. KIU.

UNITED PAY THE PENALTY

Underdogs Olympique Lyonnais pulled an inspiring comeback out of the bag tonight, after going 1-0 down to Manchester United.

The Lyon side looked destined for defeat in the closing 20 minutes of the game, with United one nil up and confident in possession. However two late goals from skipper Juninho and super sub Keita were enough to turn the tables on the current champions of Europe and ensure a win for the french outfit.

Claude Puel went on record to say:

"This is only the beginning, we should not get too carried away just yet. There is a long way to go and a lot to be done if this team is to realise its true potential this season."

Nevertheless, the win will no doubt have made the journey more than worthwhile to all of the delighted travelling OL fans.

Match Report:

1: Both sets of fans applaud as United kick off the game.
4: Early danger for Lyon, as Cristiano Ronaldo cuts inside and launches a shot goalwards. Lloris can only reply by tipping the ball wide for a corner.
5: Toulalan rises above Dimitar Berbatov to clear the lines.
7: Lyon seem to be in big trouble again, as Wayne Rooney latches onto a long ball and lobs it over the head of Lloris. Fortunately for the French side, his effort is somehow kept out by the crossbar.
13: Man Utd are on the attack again, with Berbatov being caught just offside in a promising position.
16: With Lyon unable to find any clear cut chances so far, captain Juninho opts for a long range strike which goes flying over the bar.
20: Olympique Lyonnais are gaining some momentum now, as a Fred shot is blocked by Rio Ferdinand and goes out for the corner. Juninho floats the ball over to the back post where it is cleared, only for it to land at the feet of Jean Makoun whose left foot piledriver beats Van Der Sar and also the post.
24: GOAL! Benzema plays Fred in, who applies a cool finish to send the away fans wild. However the linesman's flag is up and the goal is disallowed! (GOAL DISALLOWED)
31: Nani crosses the ball into the area from the left and Berbatov heads it goalwards, but Lloris saves well and holds the ball.
35: Benzema is clear through after a lovely one-two with Fred, but he can only rattle the woodwork with his vicious effort much to the disbelief of the fans.
45: GOAL! Patrice Evra bombs down the left hand side and sends the ball over to team mate Ronaldo, who ellagantly kills the ball on his chest before smashing home a glorious scissor kick! 1-0 Man Utd (RONALDO)

HALF-TIME: 1-0 Man Utd

46: Lyon kick off.
50: Juninho lobs the ball over the Red Devils' defence to meet the run of Fred, who wins his battle with Vidic and blasts the ball at Van Der Sar, who can only turn the strike around the post for a corner.
51: Juninho's corner is cleared by Vidic, but the ball falls to Govou who has a pop and narrowly misses the target.
64: Lyon continue to press United for an equaliser, as Juninho and Benzema link up well. Van Der Sar is equal to Benzema's effort however and Lyon remain a goal behind.
SUB: Neville and Nani jog off, as Brown and Anderson come on to replace them.
78: PENALTY! Alex Ferguson can't believe it! A mad lunge by Wes Brown on Karim Benzema has given the referee no choice but to point to the spot.
Lyon skipper Juninho steps up to take it and sends Van Der Sar the wrong way! GOAL! 1-1 (JUNINHO)
SUB: Juninho receives a standing ovation from the away fans as he comes off for Jean Makoun. Govou also makes way for Abdul Keita.
82: Paul Scholes almost regains the lead for United after a great effort from 35 yards which goes just wide.
85: Fred plays the ball into the feet of Benzema, who finds half a yard and unleashes a furious strike at goal that Van Der Sar can only parry. Fred goes for the follow up but Vidic reacts well and slides the ball out for a corner.
86: Van Der Sar comes off his line to punch Grosso's corner clear but the ball lands to Cris, who smacks it first time from miles out and comes very close to hitting the back of the net.
90+: GOAL! And there is the winner! Keita gets behind the United back four and smashes it low at Van Der Sar, who blocks the ball but cannot pounce on the rebound, as Keita slots it home in stoppage time! The Lyon fans erupt as the ball hits the back of the net! 2-1 Lyon (KEITA)

PUEL LOOKING FOR LONG TERM INVESTMENTS

According to sources in France, Lyon boss Claude Puel is closing in on three transfer deals ahead of the Trophee Des Champions match against Marseille.

It is believed that Puel is looking to bring in young players who have the potential to develop rather than splashing the cash on established superstars.

Lyon.TV caught up with Puel to find out more...

Claude, well done on your successful pre-season tour of England.
Thank you.

Every Lyon fan is wondering right now - what are your intentions for this transfer window?
Well it is simple really, to improve the squad we currently have. That may mean bringing in experienced players or it may mean looking for those players who have not reached their peak yet. In our case, we are looking to bring in the latter type of player.

So should the Lyon fans not be expecting any big name signings this window then?
What I will say is that we are swaying more towards signing the younger players who still have the hunger to win and the desire to improve. For me, it's all about doing the right deal. Say, for example, we have a choice between a good 29 year old or a promising 21 year old. If this is the case then I of course would want to choose the younger player.

Okay, and could you tell us what areas of the team you are looking to improve?
Well we can improve everywhere, of course. If a chance arises to sign a player who is of a higher standard than those we already possess, we will consider it.
However, I can say that we are interested in buying a central defender, central midfielder and also a striker.

Can you give us any names?
I would rather not. To be honest, if you speak out like that then there is a chance that another team will come in for the player. I can reassure all of the Lyon fans though, that we are active in the market.

Is there any chance of a new signing before the match against Marseille this weekend?
I doubt it. As I have said, we are working on some deals and keeping tabs on certain players, but we are only in the market to do the right deals, not to buy for the sake of it.

Finally, Claude, how confident are you ahead of the big game against Marseille? Has your pre-season given a boost to the team?
All I will say on that matter is that we are more than prepared for Marseille. I obviously hope and believe that we can win this match and continue with our good start to the campaign.
