Transfer Targets

Jan Poortvliet has announced some certain players that he is lookg at on the official Southampton FC website, but he said those just aren't all the players he's looking at right now.

Irish international Stephen Kelly has been one of the players Jan Poortvliet is hoping to sign. The 24 year old currently plays for Birmingham City at the right back position and impressively he played every minute of Birmingham City's stay in the top flight last season. The fee that Birmingham City demand is around 700 K - 1 million pounds.

Agostino Garofalo from Serie B side Grosseto has been linked with a move to Southampton. Jan Poortvliet has described Garofalo as "undiscovered great talent", but if Garofalo makes the moves to the Saints we'll see if he is actually undiscovered talent. Agostino Garofalo plays at left back but can play at centre back as well.

Leeds United superstar Jermaine Beckford has been hinted to a move to Southampton. The 24 year old is a striker in league one, he's one of league one's best strikers and surely Beckford would be pleased to make the step up to the Championship.

Scottish international Steven Fletcher from Hibernian is one of the strikers that Jan Poortvliet has been looking at. The 21 year old striker has attracted the attentions of Real Madrid and he surely does have a bright future ahead of him with two Scotland caps.

16 year old wonderkid Jack Wilshere from Arsenal has been linked on a loan move to Southampton. He currently occupies at left midfield and he's scored against the likes of Stuttgart in pre-season friendlies, Wilshere also plays for the England under 19's and he's Arsenal's youngest player to make their debut in the Premiership.

Coca-Cola Championship
Match Day 1 Preview

Southampton
Vs
Derby County

Southampton line up:

Goalkeeper: Kelvin Davis
Left Back: Joseph Mills
Centre Back: Michael Svensson (C)
Centre Back: Chris Perry
Right Back: Llyod James
Left Midfield: Andrew Surman
Centre Midfield: Jason Euell
Centre Midfield: Paul Wotton
Right Midfield: Romain Gasmi
Striker: Stern John
Striker: Bradley Wright-Phillips

Formation: 4-4-2

Southampton Danger Man:

Andrew Surman

The left young midfielder Andrew Surman is the man to watch out for against Derby County. He's got a lot of paste and skill to cause trouble at the left back position and he's also got an eye for goal, Derby need to watch out for Surman as he's one of Southampton's best rated players. Surman has also been capped by the England Under 21 team so he's got some international experince as well.

Derby County Danger Man:

Giles Barnes

Giles Barnes is the man to watch out for against Southampton. The young man at 20 years old has been the Championship player of the month before which says a lot about a young man like him. Barnes had some Premiership experince and scoring in his first goal in the Premiership against Newcastle United, he's got an eye for goal as he's dangerous especially scoring 7 goals in 12 matches for the England Under 19 side.

Saints With a Comfortable Victory

http://www.visit-southampton.co.uk/xsdbimgs/Football%20stadium%20036.jpg

Venue: St Mary's Stadium
Result: Southampton 2 - 0 Derby County
First Half:
The first 15 minutes were in Southampton's posession but unfortunately couldn't get a real chance on goal as the Derby defence looked very solid. Derby had a chance after a mistake from Joseph Mills and had a counter attack but it was stopped at the last second by Michael Svensson. From the 25th minute to the 40th was pretty much in Derby's hands as they came close with three chances on goal, one of them was a header from Ellington but he was marked tightly but Chris Perry and he headered it over the bar. The second chance by Giles Barnes was just wide of the goal as it looked like he was trying to score a screamer from outside the box, then finally the last chance that Derby had of the first half was poor defending by Southampton. Nacer Barazite from Derby cut into the box running through Lloyd James' challenge but there was no choice for Kelvin Davis to come out and stop the attack, the ball rebounded off Davis but back to Barazite as he crossed it into the middle but it was cleared out of the box by Chris Perry. The last chance of the half was a great run by Roman Gasmi down on the right wing as he saw Bradley Wright-Phillips making a run down the flank he hit a through ball to Wright-Phillips, Wright-Phillips ran down the wing and cut into the box as he was being marked closely but with his strength he managed not to get tackled as Roy Carroll came out, Wright-Phillips smacked it over Roy Carroll's head and into the top left corner. Right on the half time whistle Bradley Wright-Phillips had made it 1 - 0 to the Saints.

Second Half:
The second half was about Southampton with the great passing, Derby didn't really have much chances only about 2 chances on goal but Southampton showed their class. At the 57th minute Kazmierczak came on for Barazite as Barazite was not performing that well today. Euell hit a lob ball to Stern John but John held up the ball has he couldn't find a way pass the Derby defence as he passed it back to Paul Wotton, Wotton ran around Davis and Albrechtsten and took a shot outside the box but it just went over the crossbar but it looked like Roy Carroll had it saved. Green at the 60 minute mark. In the 74th minute Svensson won the ball back from a dangerous Derby attack and passed it to Jason Euell, Euell then hit a through ball to Wright-Phillips. Wright-Phillips used his pace to lose the defenders and he got away as he slotted the ball in the left bottom corner with a cool finilalalala was to Southampton with a cool finish from Bradley Wright-Phillips. There was a 74th minute substiution, Rudi Skacel on for Paul Wotton, Jan Poortvliet wanted to give Paul Wotton a rest as he was doing lots of hard work today. Another substitution 2 minutes later as it was Rob Hulse on for Giles Barnes. Romain Gasmi ran down the wing and passed it to Wright-Phillips, he cut back in just outside the box as he ignored the two players that ran past him but shot over the bar. 80th min substitution David McGoldrick on for Jason Euell but the formation switch to a 4-3-3 formation. Surman picked up the bad pass but Carroll pulls off a good save. Andrew Surman made a great run down the left wing and hit a through ball to McGoldrick, then McGoldrick layed it off to Stern John but John couldn't finilalalala. Villa picked up the bad pass from Joseph Mills and tried a long range shot but it just hit it past the post. Mills ran down the wing and a through ball to John but John was closed down by Roy Caroll. Full time whistle and Southampton with a comfortable 2 - 0 victory over Derby at home.

Man of the Match: Michael Svensson

Stephen Kelly Officialy a Saint

Irish international Stephen Kelly has been signed from Birmingham City of a sum roughly around £300,000. The 25 year old right back was put on the transfer list by Birmingham City manager Alex McLeis. It's been told by Jan Poortvliet that Stephen Kelly will most likely be the starting right back for Southampton and if that is true he will play against his former club in the next match.

Coca-Cola Championship
Match Day 2 Preview

Southampton
Vs
Birmingham City

Match day two of the Championship features Southampton taking on Birmingham City in an exciting counter. Stephen Kelly will take on his former club has he recently moved to Southampton and this is his debut match against his former club. Both clubs were victorious in their first games but Birmingham City are tipped to win this match but it won't be close as Stephen Kelly will be proving to Alex McLeish that selling him was a big mistake.

Southampton starting line up:

Players to watch:

Bradley Wright-Phillips

Son of Arsenal legend Ian Wright and younger brother of Shaun Wright-Phillips netted twice against Derby County last time. Bradley has an eye for goal and he's got a lot of pace just like his older brother. But can Bradley Wright-Phillips carry on his goal scoring form against Birmingham City, we'll see if he causes any trouble in the Birmingham defence.

Sebastian Larsson

This young Swedish international Sebastian Larsson has had Premiership experince with Birmingham City last season and Arsenal when he was trainning with the likes of Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp and Patrick Viera. He's well known for his dangerous freekicks as he scored beautiful freekicks in the Premiership last season, but he's also a good playmaker. We'll see if he can scare the Southampton defence with his great eye for goal.

Another Victory For the Super Saints

http://m.gmgrd.co.uk/res/158.$plit/C_71_article_1033908_image_list_image_list_item_0_ image.jpg

Venue: St Andrew's Stadium (Birmingham City)

First Half:
Early scares in the second minute Kevin Philips broke through the defence but Kelvin Davis pulled off a save for a corner. Straight from that corner Jerome had a header but the ball went wide. A few minutes later some good link up play by Stephen Kelly with the one two with Paul Wotton then a through ball to Wright-Phillips, but Wright-Phillips smacked it over the bar. Great passing by Southampton as the Birmingham defence couldn't cope with the passing as Wright-Phillips crossed it into the middle to Stern John but John couldn't finilalalala. At the 20th minute mark a lob pass walalalala over the Birmingham defence and a shot came from Surman but it hit his own player and went over the bar. Later on Kevin Phillips had a good chance on goal but his shot went straight at the keeper. A few minutes after Bradley Wright-Phillips broke through defence but Taylor pulled off a good save. Towards the end of the first half Wotton won the ball back in midfield and tried a long range shot but it was a comfortable save for Maik Taylor. Cameron Jerome had shot deflected and it was comfortably saved for Davis. In the 43rd minute a high cross into the middle from Birmingham looked like it was a threatning one, but there was no non-sense from Perry as he booted it out. Jerome took another header out powering the Southampton defenders but straight at Davis. Right at the dead lock a through ball to Wright-Phillips from Gasmi but he was double teamed. Birmingham City mostly dominated the first half but didn't take their chances.

Second Half:
Yellow card for Stuart Parnaby in the 46th minute as he made a late challenge on Andrew Surman. Straight from the freekick which Kelly took, he hit a high ball into the box but it was cleared out but from then on Southampton were controlling the ball in their half for about 6 minutes running rings around Birmingham. A cross from Gasmi was headered away by Nafti and landed infront of Surman, Andrew Surman took a half volley on that but hit the crossbar! Very unlucky as it was a thunderous strike. Stern John off for David McGoldrick 55th minute. David McGoldrick 60th min sub from injury off for Simon Gillet. At the same time Joseph Mills was subbed off for Wayne Thomas. In the 71st minute the possesion was even but Stern John tried a screamed from far out but it was only to be inches away from the left top hand corner. 72nd minute double substition as Paranby makes way for Murphy and Johnson comes on for Nafti. 73rd minute as Stern John passes to Bradley Wright-Phillips there are two defenders on him, but Wright-Phillips uses his pace and runs through the middle of them! Wright-Phillips is one on one with the keeper but finishes it easily with a cool finish. Birmingham responded back with another Cameron Jerome header but it was saved very well by Kelvin Davis. 79th minute substition for Birmingham City as Lee Carsley comes off for Agustien. 85th minute scare for Southampton as Kevin Phillips beats the Southampton defence but great keeping from Davis as he closes him down straight away. Stephen Kelly picks up the bad pass and he runs down the right wing hard and fast, he cuts in and takes a shot but Taylor saves it but Wright-Phillips picks up the rebound and an easy tap in! 2 - 0 to the Saints as Wright-Phillips scores another. It so could've been Stephen Kelly's goal on his debut against his former club but Taylor kept him out.
Final score: Southampton 2 - 0 Birmingham City

Coca-Cola Championship
Matchday 3

Plymouth Argyle
Vs
Southampton

Venue: Home Park (Plymouth Argyle)

Both teams have had victories but Plymouth with only one as they lost their last game, while Southampton have had two victories out of two. Jan Poortvliet isn't risking all his top class players in this match as he says he is going to rotate quiet a few times during the season. Plymouth have the advantage in this one playing at home but the Saints won't be scared as they picked up a 2 - 0 victory over Birmingham City away.

Southampton Starting 11:

Players to Watch:

Romain Gasmi

The young French 21 year old Romain Gasmi is on loan from RC Strasbourg from France with an option to buy. Gasmi in his debut match assisted Bradley Wright-Phillips with a great through ball, at the same time he was causing trouble on the right hand side of Derby County. This young man has lots of pace as he can cause lots of trouble down the wings, as well as last match he was causing a little bit of chaos on the wing against Birmingham City. At the moment he looks impressive enough to get sign on a permanent deal but it's still early days, will Gasmi impress once again?

Emile Mpenza

The experinced Belgium international can use his experince to cause some trouble in the Southampton defence. A very experinced man as he's had 54 caps for Belgium with 17 internationa goals. Mpenza has also played for some high profile clubs inlcuding his recent club Manchester City, Hamburger and Schalke. Mpenza has also played in the 1998 World Cup but had to miss out on the 2002 one with an injury. Plymouth expect big things from this striker but will he get his first goal against the Saints?

Rotation Back Fired?
http://www.independent.co.uk/multimedia/archive/00016/southampton_16788t.jpg
Venue: Home Park
Result: Plymouth 3 - 0 Southampton

First Half:
The first few minutes were dominated by Southampton, it looked early on that Southampton were going to take this game by storm. But it all back fired with the continuous attacks by Southampton when Plymouth hit them on the counter attack from a corner, Gallagher ran with the ball and laid it off to Mpenza but unselfishly Mpenza made a through ball for Gallagher for him to finilalalala was to Plymouth Argyle with a Paul Gallagher goal in the 11th minute. Straight away from the goal Southampton were determined to get a goal back but they couldn't find a way through as shot after shot it wouldn't go in the net. Southampton had a very close chance on the 30 minute mark when Stern John headered the ball from a Romain Gasmi cross, but it was only to be the post that stopped Stern John from his first goal of the season. Towards the end of the first half Paul Gallagher had a close chance as he took on a volley from a Chris Clark cross. 1 - 0 it was to the home side at half time.

Second Half:
Already into the second half Plymouth had the attack straight away as Yoann Folly tried a shot from long range but it hit Chris Perry and deflected into the feet of Lloyd James, but James with a poor clearance hit Gallagher as Gallagher took it on and chipped it over Davis. 2 - 0 to Plymouth and James wasn't too pleased with his mistake. Plymouth dominated the next ten minutees as they came very close when Plymouth captain Karl Duguid had a header that just went over the bar. Another chance for Plymouth came when Paul Gallagher took a long range shot but he forced Kelvin Davis into a good save. There was a 58th minute substitution when Tomas Pekhart came off for Adam Lallana, while at the same time Plymouth a substitution making Mathias Kouo-Doumbe come off for Chris Barker. Southampton didn't give up when Adam Lallana made an impact straight away with a overhead kick from a corner but straight into the hands of the keeper. Another substitution was made for Southampton as Lee Holmes came off for Southampton star Andrew Surman. Surman made an impact as he took the Southampton freekick but the freekick just skimmed the top of the bar. There was a Plymouth corner in the 85th minute which saw Emile Mpenza score a header into the Southampton goal, he leaped up beating two Southampton defenders as Southampton hearts were shattered. 3 - 0 it was to the home side and the Southampton fans didn't look too please while the Plymouth fans were partying. Full time it was as it ended 3 - 0 to the home team.

Coca-Cola Championship
Matchday 4 Preview

Vs

Venue: St Mary's Stadium

So far the season has been looking promising for Southampton with just one lost and in 9th place. While Cardiff City are in the bottom half at 19th without a win but it's still early days. The Saints lost 3 - 0 last time out to Plymouth with a rotated starting eleven, Jan Poortvliet learnt his lesson from the rotation as now he's going to play his best team out, while Cardiff lost as well. Southampton are looking to bounce back from the heavy defeat while Cardiff are looking for their first win, the market predicts Southampton will edge out a victory over Cardiff.

Southampton Starting 11:

Players to Watch:

Stephen Kelly
Stephen Kelly who recently moved from Birmingham City to Southampton has been enjoying life at Southampton so far. Stephen Kelly showed in his debut his great defending, Kelly has great pace for a right back and is a strong tackler. The Irish international maybe proved Alex McLeish that selling him was a big mistake, but that was only for one game, the real answer will be found out once he plays some more games.

Joe Ledley
Joe Ledley is a young 21 year old that is playing at the senior level for Wales. The young man played in the FA Cup Final last year against Portsmouth, his great play have attracted Everton to make bids for him, but Cardiff have kept rejecting the offers from Everton. Not surprisingly also Championship side Wolverhampton made an offer for Joe Ledley which was also rejected, but that wasn't it, recently promoted side Stoke City made an offer for him but it got turned down too. Ledley is Cardiff's star man but he may also even attract the attention of Southampton manager Jan Poortvliet.

Good start here mate, nice team choice too

Only thing I would maybe suggest is that you space out the text in your match reports a little more to make it easier to read.

Keep up the good work though!

Saints Put Five Past Cardiff

Venue: St Mary's Stadium
First Half:
Southampton kicked it off as they attacked straight away as eventually early on Stern John made a run on the left wing cutting in but got tackled from behind by Pulse and it was a penalty early on! Pulse got a yellow card from the challenge and it was all up to Stern John to finish the penalty, John stepped up and confidently put it away in the right corner as Enckleman stood still. From then on Cardiff City were pushing hard and defending well, that paid off in the 18th minute when Eddie Johnson had a golden opportunity, Johnson received the great pass from McPhail but decided to go with the shot straight away which just missed the post. Again and again Cardiff kept pushing hard as in the 22nd minute Bothroyd had a chance for Cardiff again, but it was a poor shot which landed in the keepers hands. From then on the game started to even out a bit but Southampton from the 34th minute took in charge of the game as they really did wake up with a great chance from Wright-Phillips, Svensson crossed the ball into the middle which landed on Wright-Phillips’ head, but it was only to miss the post. A few minutes later Stern John had a chance from a through ball which went in between the gap of the two defenders, but Enckleman closed him down while the two Cardiff defenders closed him down quickly as well. Chris Perry was lucky to get away with no card as he made a dirty challenge on Eddie Johnson, he took out Johnson’s right leg as he just got a told off. It could have costed Southampton a goal as from the free kick which Eddie Johnson took, the ball went floating in the air as it found Davis, but Davis with a poor first touch could not take on the second touch. The counter attack happened straight away as Jason Euell ran down the field hard, running past three Cardiff players, as he reached the box he laid it off to John, only to find that John couldn’t get a good first touch but immediately he crossed it in, unfortunately it went over Andrew Surman’s head as the half time whistle blew.

Second Half:
Straight from the break Cardiff took the kick off and tried to show the same determination for a goal in the first half. The determination showed a chance that was from Bothroyd, he got through into the box as he took a shot which Davis saved, the rebound which was cleared but not well, Johnson took a header but Davis dived low to save it. Davis threw it out to Perry but Rae headered it on as Comminges took the cross which Johnson headered it on into the hands of Davis. Cardiff City really showed that they were dying to get the equalizer as they dominated the first five minutes. In the 56th minute Cardiff brought off Bothroyd and brought on McCormack. Wright-Phillips had a good chance before he got subbed off as he had a shot that was just whisker wide from the goal, that was his last chance of the game as he got taken off for young boy Jamie White, while at the same time Andrew Surman got taken off for Rudi Skacel. Stephen Kelly was really desperate for his first goal for Southampton as he took a shot from far out which landed in Enckleman’s hands. The last substitution was made for Southampton as Joseph Mills came off for Imudia. In the 76th minute, 18 year old Jamie White made his presence felt coming off the bench setting up Stern John, White could’ve ran all the way but he made a through ball to Stern John, John took Enckleman to one side and finished it comfortably in the left corner. Cardiff City subbed off Pulse and Gyepes came on. Again in the 84th minute the 18 year old substitute, Jamie White, made another great assist to Stern John for his hat trick. Jamie White received the throw in and ran around the two defenders surrounding him, White made a great cut in pass to the middle which Stern John put away. 3 – 0 it was to Southampton as it looked all wrapped up. Two minutes later Southampton made it 4 – 0! Again the young man Jamie White made a great run on the right wing showing his pace against the defenders, he ran into the box as the two defenders weren’t sure what to do, White made a pass into the box to John and Stern John sent Enckleman the wrong way, John had his fourth goal of the match! It just wasn’t over yet as Jamie White wanted a goal from all his assists, it finally paid off as White got a goal in the 90th minute. Rudi Skacel made a slick pass into the middle for John to get the ball in the net, but McNaughton gets back and tried to clear it but it hit Enckleman but then it floated into the air! The ball drop to the feet of Jamie White as he volleyed it from the edge of the box into the top right hand corner!

Final Score: Southampton 5 - 0 Cardiff City
Goal Scoreres: John 4', 76', 84', 86' and White 90'.

Interview With Jan Poortvliet

Mr. Poortvliet, how did you feel on your 5 – 0 thumping over Cardiff City?
Well of course I felt very happy about the result, but in my view the performance is very important. I thought the team had a good performance but not particularly in the first half, I thought in the first half we were lacking the eye for goal. In the second half it really did make me happy, I thought the boys worked very hard and with these types of performances I’m sure we can win promotion.

Well as you see the performance as a great one, what did you think about Stern John’s performance?
Well first of all I thought Stern had a great game, four goals in one game, that is something special and especially at high standards. I hope Stern can carry on with these performances because if he does, I’m sure he’ll be the top scorer of the Championship.

In some newspapers there were rumours that you were selling Stern John, is that true?
That’s rubbish. I never had any intentions to sell Stern John, especially with a performance like that. In no way I’m not selling Stern John.

Interesting, so what did you feel about eighteen year old Jamie White’s performance?
Well of course I thought it was spectacular. He only just came off the bench and only played about fifteen minutes. In that fifteen minutes he assisted Stern John twice and grabbed a goal for himself, maybe if it wasn’t for Jamie, Stern may have not got his four goals. It’s great to see stuff like that from a young man, but you can never say he’ll be amazing when he’s older from that performance. Some people may think he’s the next big thing but in order to do that he has to work hard in training and give 100% in everything, things just don’t happen you have to make it happen.

Jan, we’ve heard that you still have some transfer targets on your list, is there any new news on them coming to Southampton?
Well, I still have a few targets on my list and I’m still investing in the transfer market. So yes I’m still chasing after talent to bring into Southampton.

Can you name the targets?
Well I like to keep them as secrets, but I can assure you that I might bring in two or three more players.

Just one last question, are there any players that you are going to sell?
Maybe, I might sell a few players or loan out some of the young lads. But I’m not quite sure if any are going to move on permanent deals, but you can expect some of the players going out on loan.

Thanks for talking to us on Sky Sports.
Any time, it’s a pleasure.
