Arsenal Settle For 3rd Place
![]() 2007/2008 Season Summary: Arsenal endured an eventful season in which they ended up finishing third in the Barclays Premier League, getting knocked out of the Champions League in the quarter final stage, loosing to Manchester United in the FA Cup fifth round and getting hammered by Tottenham in the League Cup semi finals. Fellow Premier League side Liverpool knocked out arsenal of the UEFA Champions League at the quarter final stage. The Gunners were defeated 4-2 by the Liverpool thanks to late goals by Fernando Torres and Ryan Babel. In the League Cup Arsenal made it all the way to the semi finals only to be thumped by rivals Tottenham Hotspur who ended up beating Chelsea in the final. Their FA Cup run also ended with a crushing 4-0 defeat to Manchester United in the fifth round. Arsenal started last season's Premier League campaign in style and rose to the top of the Premier League table. The Gunners were playing some terrific football at times which saw them earn plaudits all across the globe. Before the season football pundits questioned Arsenal's ability to last the whole season and win the league. They were right as from the end of February until May the Gunners season took a turn for the worst. Wenger didn't strengthen his squad during the January transfer window as he felt his bunch of players had enough quality and strength in depth to go the whole way. The wheels came off Arsenal's bandwagon at St. Andrews where 3 minutes into the game their young Croatian striker Eduardo suffered a horrific tackle by Birmingham defender Martin Taylor that left the striker with a broken leg. Taylor was sent off however the Blues managed to salvage a point from the game with a last minute penalty from James McFadden. Wenger launched an outrageous attack on Martin Taylor saying that he should never play football again. Wenger later retracted these comments. The same game say captain William Gallas sit in the middle of the field sulking as McFadden scored the spot kick to draw the game. Midfielder Tomáš Rosický was the next to suffer an injury as the Gunners' title hopes were surrendered to Manchester United who went on to overtake Arsenal and win the Premier League trophy. Chelsea finished in second place and Arsenal eventually settled for third place and Liverpool rounded off the top 4 by beating Everton to the last Champions League spot. |

Quote:
I'm hoping to get a defensive midfielder in (Touré) and let him sit deep and allow Fabregas and the wingers to attack but we'll see. |
