Premier League Preview - Top 4
![]() As the new Barclays Premier League season draws ever closer, we take a look at how each of the Premier League giants are preparing for the new season. Arsenal FC: The Gunners will be aiming to win their first trophy since 2005 when they kick off their new Premier League campaign. Arsene Wenger has added Samir Nasri, Mikael Silvestre and Aaron Ramsey to his squad aswell as call Carlos Vela back from his loan spell. Arsenal suffered numerous injuries towards the end of last season and will be trying to avoid picking up too many injuries this season. The French manager claims his side are fitter and better than ever but will they have enough to last the long season? Last Season Finish: 3rd Manager: Arsene Wenger Players In: Samir Nasri (Marsaille), Aaron Ramsey (Cardiff), Mikael Silvestre (Manchester United) Title Odds: 8/1 -------------------- Manchester United: The Red Devils won the League and Champions League last season and have been quiet in the transfer market so far this summer with their sole recruit being Dimitar Berbatov who was signed from Tottenham Hotspur earlier this summer. Manager Sir Alex Ferguson is confident that his squad can make it 3 league titles in a row this season but many think that they will rely on Cristiano Ronaldo to get their goals and if the Portuguese leaves the Old Trafford based club this summer then who is going to provide them with 40 goals a season? Goalscoring aside, United look strong at the back with experienced players such as Edwin Van der Sar and Gary Neville. The fact that they have only signed Berbatov so far this summer puts them as outsiders for the League title. Last Season Finish: 1st Manager: Sir Alex Ferguson Players In: Dimitar Berbatov (Tottenham Hotspur) Title Odds: 6/1 -------------------- Chelsea FC: There is a new era about to begin at Stamford Bridge as Luiz Felipe Scolari is set to manage in the Premier League for the first time in his managerial career. Scolari has wasted no time in recruiting his former players with Brazilian born, Portuguese international Deco joining the club earlier this month. Also joining Chelsea was dynamic right back José Bosingwa. These aquisitions make the Blues favourites for the title this time around but many are wondering if Scolari will be able to handle life in the Premier League. According to players at Stamford Bridge, Scolari is making them play in a new fashion with a more attacking approach than last year. We could see more players joining Chelsea later this summer but even with the squad they have, Chelsea are looking like real title winners. Last Season Finish: 2nd Manager: Luiz Felipe Scolari Players In: Deco (Barcelona), José Bosingwa (Porto) Title Odds: 5/1 -------------------- Liverpool: Can Liverpool end an 18 year wait for a Premier League title? That's the main question surrounding Anfield as the Reds aim to end the long wait for a league title and the summer signing of Robbie Keane from Tottenham has boosted their hopes of delivering a league title. For them to win the league, they will need Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres performing at their peak but stability is the key to success and that's what Liverpool have lacked in recent years. This year is the Merseysiders' best chance of winning the league and under-fire manager Rafael Benitez knows that he must deliver of face the consequences. Last season Liverpool finished fourth and only just managed to hold off rivals Everton to claim the last Champions League spot and they must do better if they are to stake their claim for the league title. Last Season Finish: 4th Manager: Rafael Benitez Players In: Robbie Keane (Tottenham Hotspur), Andrea Dossena (Udinese), Albert Riera (Espanyol), Philipp Degen (Borussia Dortmund) Title Odds: 7/1 |

Arsenal FC Squad Analysis Goalkeepers: ![]() Name: Manuel Almunia Age: 31 Position: Goalkeeper Abilities: TBA Squad Number: 1 Overview: At 31 years of age, Almunia is one of the oldest heads in the current Arsenal squad and will be open to offers from other clubs after a bust up with manager Arsene Wenger. Almunia is a solid goalkeeper but his age means he will probably make way for a new goalkeeper. _______________ Name: Łukasz Fabiański Age: 23Position: Goalkeeper Abilities: TBA Squad Number: 21 Overview: The young Polish stopper is regarded as one of the hottest young keepers in the game. Fabiański will probably start most games on the bench this season but Wenger is likely to give him chances in Cup matches. _______________Name: Vito Mannone Age: 20 Position: Goalkeeper Abilities: TBA Squad Number: 24 Overview: Mannone is a young goalkeeper with huge potential. It is unlikely that Mannone will get many first team chances this season but he is definately a great prospect for the future. _______________ Defenders: ![]() Name: Bacary Sagna Age: 25 Position: Right Back Abilities: TBA Squad Number: 3 Overview: The dynamic right back is a great athlete who just loves to venture down the wings. Sagna has been criticised for his poor defensive abilities but his pace and skill can penetrate defences. Sagna will be the first choice right back at the Emirates this season. _______________ Name: Emmanuel Eboué Age: 25 Position: Right Back/Right Midfield Abilities: TBA Squad Number: 37 Overview: Eboué will probably be playing second fiddle to Sagna for the right back position but should Sagna pick up an injury or get called up for international duty, Eboué will slot perfectly into the side. Wenger may consider selling Eboué to raise funds and decrase wages but that is unlikely. _______________ Name: Kolo Touré Age: 27 Position: Centre Back Abilities: TBA Squad Number: 5 Overview: Touré is currently vice-captain at Arsenal and could be given the captain's armband should Wenger decide that William Gallas is unworthy of captaining the side. The Nigerial is a rock in the centre of defence and is a player Wenger should be able to rely on to put in the performances on a weekly basis. _______________ Name: William Gallas Age: 31 Position: Centre Back Abilities: TBA Squad Number: 10 Overview: The captain of the current Arsenal side. Gallas has been heavily criticised for his lack of leadership and errors as a defender. There has been a big debate over who should be captaining the Arsenal side with many favouring a switch of captaincy to either Kolo Touré or Cesc Fabregas. Gallas has however provided the Gunners with important match saving goals but will that be enough for him to retain his role at the Emirates? _______________ Name: Mikaël Silvestre Age: 31 Position: Centre Back Abilities: TBA Squad Number: 18 Overview: Silvestre was signed from rivals Manchester United earlier this summer which came as a surprise and disappointment to many Arsenal fans who didn't rate Silvestre during his time at Manchester United. The French defender will have to prove he can push for a first team spot this season or face the consequences of sitting on the bench for yet another season. _______________ Name: Johan Djourou Age: 21 Position: Centre Back Abilities: TBA Squad Number: 20 Overview:The young Swiss defender is another one of Wenger's players for the future. At just 21 years of age, Djourou is displaying fine form for Arsenal which could see him feature more regularly in the Arsenal side. He could be loaned out to another club in order to gain more first team experience. _______________ Name: Gaël Clichy Age: 23 Position: Left Back Abilities: TBA Squad Number: 22 Overview: Clichy is regarded as one of the best left backs in the Premier League. Since his move from Cannes to Arsenal in 2003, Clichy has shone in the left side of defence. Wenger is expecting several clubs to come calling for the young Frenchman's services but insists that Clichy will not be leaving the club this summer. _______________ Midfielders: ![]() Name: Theo Walcott Age: 19 Position: Left Wing Midfield/Striker Abilities: TBA Squad Number: 14 Overview: Walcott's electric pace makes him so dangerous when attacking defences. He has the speed and ability to terrorise defences on his day. Frustrated at the lack of first team oppertunities last season, Walcott is sure to get plenty of chances to shine this season. The young England winger or striker will be a huge asset to Arsene Wenger this season and is sure to play in integral part in the Gunners' title challenge. _______________ Name: Tomáš Rosický Age: 27 Position: Winger/Attacking Midfielder Abilities: TBA Squad Number: 7 Overview: Rosický had an outstanding season last year only for injury to put him out of the rest of last season. The Cech Republic captain's place could be under threat from Theo Walcott this season so he will have to work hard to secure a first team place. _______________ Name: Samir Nasri Age: 21 Position: Winger/Attacking Midfielder Abilities: TBA Squad Number: 8 Overview: After sealing his transfer from Marseille earlier this summer, Nasri will be looking to make an immediate impact in the Premier League. The young midfielder is already a French international and is regarded as one of the best young wingers in Europe. Nasri has been compared to Arsenal legend Robert Pires by manager Arsene Wenger so we know what to expect from the young midfielder! _______________ Name: Denílson Age: 20 Position: Centre Midfield Abilities: TBA Squad Number: 15 Overview: Denílson Pereira Neves, commonly known as just Denílson, is a highly rated central midfielder and could partner Cesc Fabregas in the centre of the park this season. Denílson impressed at the Gunners last season and this season could be his big chance. Wenger will be going all out to keep him in the squad and will try and mould the young Brazilian into a great midfielder. _______________ Name:Alexandre Song Age: 21 Position: Centre Defensive Midfield Abilities: TBA Squad Number: 17 Overview: Song is not likely to see much first team action this term but will be given a chance in some less important games. Wenger is considering selling or loaning out the youngster but he could yet stay at Arsenal. Song played very well for his country in the African Cup of Nations earlier this year and will be keen to impress Wenger and push for a first team place. _______________ Name: Aaron Ramsey Age: 17 Position: Right Wing Midfield Abilities: TBA Squad Number: 16 Overview: Signed from Cardiff during the summer, Ramsey is a much sought after winger but Wenger insists that his future lies at the Emirates Stadium. Ramsey is known for his great technical ability, speed and excellent vision but he may not be able to convince Arsene Wenger that he is capable of cutting it in the Premier League and therefore be loaned out to a Championship side. _______________ Name: Cesc Fabregas Age: 21 Position: Centre Midfield Abilities: TBA Squad Number: 4 Overview: Goals, pace, skill, technical ability...you name it, Fabregas displayed to many different aspects of his game last season that saw him nearly claim Player Of The Season only to be beaten to the award by Cristiano Ronaldo. The young Spaniard has developed into a truly great player in the last couple of years and will be looking to make this season another to remember. _______________ Name: Abou Diaby Age: 22 Position: Left Midfield/Centre Midfield Abilities: TBA Squad Number: 2 Overview: Diaby is a player who is unlikely to see too much of the playing field this season but has proved to be a perfectly capable replacement when called upon to fill in last season. He may be sold of loaned out in order to reduce the squad size and cut wages. _______________ Name: Jack Wilshere Age: 16 Position: Attacking Midfield Abilities: TBA Squad Number: 19 Overview: This year will be a developing year for Wilshere. It is highly unlikely that the young midfielder will see any of the pitch this season but he could be loaned out in order to get more playing time at another club. _______________ Name: Amuary Bischoff Age: 21 Position: Centre Midfield Abilities: TBA Squad Number: 28 Overview: The young midfielder is very talented but also very injury prone. He was signed from Werder Bremen earlier this summer and could partner Cesc Fabregas in the centre of midfielder this season if he proves himself to be good enough to hold down a regular first team spot. _______________ Name: Kieran Gibbs Age: 18 Position: Left Wing Midfield Abilities: TBA Squad Number: 40 Overview: Gibbs is an exciting prospect for Arsenal and is expected to take part in a lot of the Gunners' Cup games this season and maybe break into the first team towards the end of this season and the start of the 2009/2010 season. Gibbs can also operate at full back but loves to attack down the wings. _______________ Forwards: ![]() Name: Robin Van Persie Age: 25 Position: Striker Abilities: TBA Squad Number: 11 Overview: Van Persie is getting a reputation for being injury prone but that doesn't stop him from being a top class striker. The Dutchman can bang in the goals when he get's the slightest chance to do so. He only made 15 league appearances last season due to injury but he is now back fit and ready to start banging in the goals once again. Van Persie is an expert at free kicks and will be hoping to go through an injury free season this time around. _______________ Name: Eduard da Silva Age: 25 Position: Striker Abilities: TBA Squad Number: 9 Overview: The talented Croatian attacker suffered a horrible compound fracture on his left fibula and a dislocated ankle at St. Andrews in February but he is now back fit again and should be a real asset to Arsenal this season. Eduardo is renowned for his pace and skill but will have a tough time trying to secure a regular starting 11 place with stiff competition from 4 other strikers in the Arsenal squad. _______________ Name: Carlos Vela Age: 19 Position: Striker Abilities: TBA Squad Number: 12 Overview: Vela spent the whole of last season on loan but after impressing Arsene Wenger in pre season training he has been allowed to stay at the club for the coming season and battle for a first team spot. Vela is a huge talent and could become a great player at the Gunners. _______________ Name: Emmanuel Adebayor Age: 24 Position: Striker Abilities: TBA Squad Number: 25 Overview: Adebayor is expected to partner Robin Van Persie in the regular Arsenal lineup this season but manager Arsene Wenger will be trying hard to keep the Togo international at the club as a number of top clubs have stated their interest in signing the 24 year old. Adebayor scored a total of 30 goals in 49 appearances in all competitions last seasons and with more first team experience he could better that record this season. _______________ Name: Nicklas Bendtner Age: 20 Position: Striker Abilities: TBA Squad Number: 26 Overview: The Danish striker is regarded as one of the hottest young talents at Arsenal and will be considering offers from other clubs during the transfer window but Wenger will be going all out to keep Bendtner at the club for at least another season.
