After some scary moments under the Special One, where Mikel was in jeapordy of being offloaded, he has rebounded to be a sold substitute for the club, and is believed to be one of Chelsea's most promising young guns. After off the field issues, and repeated fines by the club, Jose Mourinho considered dropping the young player during the 2006-2007 season, but after improved behavior and effort, he found himself in the starting lineup for some crucial games.'

When Mikel was 18, it appeared that he was going to become a Red Devil, as three days after his eighteenth birthday, Manchester United announced that they had struck a deal with Lyn Oslo to sign the young player. Reports saw the player landing at Old Trafford in January of 2006, but those reports were later falsified, as Chelsea stated they had reached a prior agreement with Mikel and his agents -- a statement denied by Lyn Oslo. Mikel repeatedly told the media, that Chelsea was the club he genually wanted to sign for and play with in the future. It turned out that Chelsea agreed to pay their rivals £12 million and Lyn Oslo £4 million for the Nigerian midfielder.

Luis Felipe Scolari has looked very pleased with Mikel's performance in training, and friendlies, and said that he will give the twenty-one year old a chance to fight for a spot in his starting eleven. It is certain that if anything were to happen to Michael Essien, Mikel would undoubtedly be Scolari's first choice replacement, despite the youngster's inexperience.

His 2007/2008 campaign saw Mikel grow into the 'Makelele' role, and by the end of the season, it had seen him play more games than the old master of the position. There were hitches to his performance though. An unfortunate red card at Old Trafford, followed by another in a Carling Cup semi-final against Everton, his fourth since joining the club. International duties rendered the subsequent suspension irrelevant, and although it wasn't a remarkable performance for the Nigerians in the Cup of Nations, Mikel was their outstanding performer.

Mikel's height and great strength, allied to good ball control and an unusually wide range of passing, allows him not only to disrupt opposing attacks, but also to spread the play effectively. With the departure of Claude Makelele, Mikel is beginning to look like the future of Chelsea and finally displaying the potential which persuaded Chelsea to pay £16 million for him.
