VS http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/a9/Tottenham_Hotspur_Badge.png Middlesbrough have been disappointing thus far, and will hope to get off the mark against a very strong tottenham side. Boro make two changes, new signing Capdevila in for Pogatetz at Left back, and the suspended Wheater is replaced at center half by Chris Riggott. Boro 11: Schwarzer Young Riggott Huth Capdevila Kafes Boateng Arca Downing Alves Tuncay Subs: O' Neil Rochemback Mcmahon Mido Aliadiere Spurs 11: Robinson Hutton Woodgate King Bale Lennon Jenas Zokora Malbranque Berbatov Keane KICK OFF 1' Almost a perfect Boro start as a quick break is capped off by a stinging effort from Alves, which is well saved by Robinson. Corner. 3' Tottenham break on the counter but Lennon can't beat Mark Schwarzer. Corner. 6' GOAL! Boro get a penalty after an awful Woodgate tackle on Tuncay in the box. Alves converts. 1-0 Boro. 10' Tuncay shoots on the turn and Robinson saves. Corner. 12' Spurs force a great save from Schwarzer. Capdevila clears. 15' Keane can't beat the Boro keeper. Corner. 16' A shot from 22 yards from the corner still doesn't go in. Another corner. 17' GOAL! Keane finally breaks down the door to equalise with a header. 1-1. 27' Tuncay forces a save from Robinson. 29' Capdevila almost lives up to his long shot reputation with a screamer that whistle's narrowly over. 40' Tuncay heads narrowly wide. 45' Downing's effort is well saved. Corner. 45' Tuncay's header forces a fine save from Robinson. Corner. 45+3 GOAL! A great cross from Kafes is headed home by Tuncay. 2-1. HALF TIME Middlesbrough lead 2-1 thanks to Alves and Tuncay. Spurs have been generally poor. Can Boro hold on? SECOND HALF 54' Alves wins a corner after a good shot is parried by Robbo (Robinson). Corner. 60' Alvelalalalas the bar with a strong header. 69' GOAL! Kafes scores his first Boro goal after Alves' shot was saved and Kafes followed up smartly. Spurs respond by bringing on Huddlestone for Zokora. 82' Changes abound for both sides as Chimbonda and Bent replace Hutton and Berbatov as Spurs look for two goals from somewhere. Meanwhile, Boro bring on Mido and O' Neil for Alves and the excellent Pantelis Kafes. 87' GOAL! Hope for Spurs as Jenas scores a stunning free kick. FULL TIME Boro win in a thrilling game. MOM according to the game: Tuncay My MOM: Pantelis Kafes |

Gareth Southgate aiming for Europe
Earlier today I interviewed Southgate on whether his side can finish in a strong position. He had this to say: I: Firstly Gareth, how did you rate your side's win over Spurs? GS: I thought we were very good, we could have won by 3 or 4, but 3-2 is a good result and I can't wait for the match with Villa. I: How happy have you been by your summer aquisitions: GS: I thought Pantelis (Kafes) was outstanding yesterday, he scored one and set up another, and for a right winger I can't ask for much more. And Joan (Capdevila) was very solid at left back, and he almost scored of course. So yes, very happy. I: And the rumours of your departure should you fail to meet the standards set by the board? GS: Thats just what they are: rumours. I: What are your season ambitions? GS: I know it sounds crazy, but I'm going for the Champions League. It will be tough, but in January I will strengthen further, and maybe we can do it. Of course, the UEFA Cup will hardly be a disappointment if we miss out. I: Thanks Gareth, good luck with Villa. GS: Thanks. |

Middlesbrough Under-18's beaten 16-0
An absolute horror for the youngsters as Reading's youth team beat them in the opening game of the Under 18's season. Young striker Tom Brighton scored 11 as the Royals ran riot over Boro. The other goals were scored by Andy Peters (2), Tom Smith, defender Richard Barker, and a bizarre goal from goalkeeper John Miller as his goal kick sailed in past Jason Steele. ![]() Middlesbrough defender Jimmy Edwards fruitlessly chases Brighton as he moves towards the goal again. |
