When it looked like Steve Bruce would be appointed the new Wigan manager after Jewell left for Derby, the Wigan Athletic board of directors decided they wanted somebody already at the club, therefore youth team manager Elliott Darbyshire rose to the challenge of keeping Wigan up. With a budget of 10.05m pounds, and Joan's Sauce providing money for the club, Darbyshire is keen to bring in some new talent. Here are his thoughts on the squad "I'm reasonably happy with the squad, but there are a few little weak points we need to strengthen. We have great options in attack, but maybe a few players from other positions could do the trick. Being the youth team coach a few days ago, we will be investing in young players mainly."

Jim: So what kind of result do you expect?
Elliott: 2-1 victory. Admittedly, they have the stronger squad and bigger budget but we have lots of determination and have the home side advantage.
Jim: Is there any players that we should be observing throughout the match?
Elliott: Emile has picked up his scoring techniques in training recently, and also Luis Antonio Valencia can really hit a ball.
Jim: Have you been making offers with other clubs?
Elliott: Yes, all I'll tell you is that we are linked with a Swiss club and a top club in the Premiership, also Barca but it looks like there squad is too small to let him go.
